Mick Appleby Stable Tour
20 Oct 2021

Rutland trainer Mick Appleby is the undisputed King of the Sand. He has won the All-Weather trainers’ championship five times and finished runner-up in the other three but is mindful that a new era is dawning as he begins his quest for a fifth straight title.

“I’m going to give it my best shot but it’s going to be tougher than ever this season,” warns Appleby, who without headline performers edged out Mark Johnston last season by just six winners, registering a best-ever tally of 59.

“It’s always been hard to compete against those bigger yards and with better opportunities on offer this winter, and the change of surface at Southwell, races are going to be even harder to win.”

He has assembled another strong team in his quest to out-perform the powerhouses of Johnston, John and Thady Gosden and Richard Fahey and will add to it at the forthcoming sales but is under no illusion about the task ahead.

Much of the Yorkshireman’s success has centred around his dominance on the Fibresand circuit at Southwell that proved a launchpad for his training career a decade ago. He saddled more than 200 winners on that surface, but the more modern Tapeta will have replaced it by the time the Nottinghamshire track re-opens on 7th December.

“A lot of my horses acted better on Fibresand than any other surface,” adds Appleby, who has about 70 horses for the winter season. “Year after year we bought horses specifically to race on it but the biggest challenge now is to find those that will be just as effective on the Tapeta there.”

Appleby, who will also send a team to Dubai in the new year including Ayr Harbour, Edraak and King Of Stars, will add a new approach to his already successful formula this winter. “I’ll also be training them on grass for the first time, as well as the All-Weather, after acquiring some wonderful old turf gallops near to my yard at Oakham that drain well all year round.”

He will be without stable jockey Ali Rawlinson for much of the season, however. He is still recovering from a bad fall at Windsor in the summer that left him with a shattered ankle, but Appleby intends to utilise the claims of his apprentices Theo Ladd, Fred Larson and Erika Parkinson to gain another vital edge.

Here, the champion trainer nominates 10 horses to follow to Simon Mapletoft of attheraces.com.

This gelding has been running consistently since coming to me from Simon Crisford last winter. He got off to the perfect start, winning at Chelmsford, and has run well there since. He remains well handicapped in All-Weather terms and will head back to Chelmsford for 7f handicaps. That’s his trip, but he’s versatile. I also think he’ll enjoy that stiff 6f at Newcastle and would also get an easy mile.

He’s up to a mark of 90 for the start of the season and can keep on progressing. He’s had a light campaign in readiness for the winter and really likes Lingfield. Mohareb’s been a real stalwart for us and has won three times there so might be a candidate for the new All-Weather Vase sprint come Good Friday.

Bought for just 9,000 gns at the August sales at Tattersalls, he has already proven a shrewd purchase. He was second on his first start for me over 1m at Newcastle and then went on to beat a big field over 7f at Redcar the other day. Even after being re-assessed he’s only on a mark of 64 and there’s a fair bit of improvement left in him.

She won in France as a three-year-old then completely lost her way but has put on a lot of condition since arriving in the summer and is looking much better in herself now. She’s been going nicely so I’ll be looking for races at around 1m for her. The form of her maiden win at Saint-Cloud worked out well so I’m happy to be starting off with a rating of just 57.

This four-year-old could be my best horse this winter. He progressed 10lb in the ratings after coming to me from Aidan O’Brien last year, winning good handicaps at Newcastle and Chelmsford. I gelded him in the summer as he was still showing signs of being colty, and he will come back to the All-Weather fresh after a few runs on turf. I was pleased with his recent run at Nottingham and will aim him at the better races over 1m and 10f.

This sprint filly came to me only recently from Ollie Pears so we are still learning about her. She won her final start for Ollie over 6f at Catterick in August and also won on the Fibresand at Southwell. She’s got an ideal profile for the All-Weather and looks open to improvement off her opening mark of 67.

The gelding arrived in the summer from Brian Meehan and won first time out for me at Brighton in August. After that he was disappointing in a couple of runs but was bursting blood vessels. We seem to have solved that issue now so I’m looking forward to getting back on track at around 1m with a well handicapped horse. Lingfield, Kempton and possibly the new surface at Southwell could be ideal destinations.

I’m giving Larado a little break to freshen him up for the winter, as I think he can do well at around 1m. He bolted up at Epsom in September by six lengths and ran very well at Nottingham at the start of October, finishing third in a big field even though he had to race on the wrong side of the track. He’s only ever raced on the All-Weather twice – once for his previous trainer Joseph O’Brien at Dundalk – and looks competitive off 84.

He began life with Roger Teal but didn’t get to the track due to a few issues. I know the family well as I trained his half-sisters Be Royale and Queen’s Royale and they were late developers as well. He’s almost ready to make a start and looks a nice horse in the making. I’ll probably run him over 7f or 1m at Newcastle as the straight, stiff track there should be ideal.

The Horse Watchers bought this gelding for 18,000 gns at the August sales at Tattersalls and I’m very happy with him. Still only a 3yo, he won three times on turf for Nigel Tinkler, and looks a nice sprinting prospect for the winter. He’s never raced on the All-Weather so will begin his campaign completely unexposed.
