Joseph Parr Stable Tour
20 Oct 2021

Young Joe Parr only began training last year following the retirement of his grandfather, the legendary Alan Bailey, but has made an instant impact with an enviable strike rate on the All-Weather.

The 34-year-old’s win percentage at Wolverhampton stands at a remarkable 30 per cent at the start of Season 9. He went into the new campaign with nine winners from just 30 runners on the Tapeta surface.

Parr is also matching some of the more established trainers at Kempton Park, where he has sent out four winners from only 16 runners on the Polytrack including a quickfire October double with the improving Queen Of Burgundy.

“The type of races they put on at those tracks suit the calibre of horses I’ve got,” says Parr. “I’ve always been brought up to understand the importance of keeping them in the grade they can win in and not to over face them.”

Lessons learned during a seven-year apprenticeship as assistant trainer to the ever-shrewd Bailey, who numbered two Chester Cups, the Ayr Gold Cup and numerous successful ‘touches’ during a 50-year career. Parr’s father Stewart was a trainer himself in the noughties, whilst mother Lorraine was racing secretary to Bailey.

“My grandad and my parents are a great support when I need their advice,” adds Parr, a former equine science graduate who sent out his first winner Clem A at Wolverhampton just before lockdown brought racing to a sudden halt.

“The pandemic couldn’t have hit at a worse time. Training and running a small business without the support of big owners can be tough at the best of times but we turned the horses out and somehow got through it,” he recalls.

Parr has certainly made up for lost time and is looking forward to building on his solid if protracted start with a successful winter on the sand. “I don’t set myself any targets,” he adds. “I don’t have any grandiose plans to have 100 horses but am committed to trying to improve my stock. It’s important to get those Saturday horses that do attract bigger owners and make you more relevant.”

Here, Parr nominates 10 horses to follow to attheraces.com's Simon Mapletoft.

He likes the All-Weather and won over 1m at Kempton last November. I haven’t run him on the synthetics since as he’s done well on turf this year, winning again at Pontefract in September. Taking him back to Kempton would be an obvious move but Newcastle’s stiff track will also suit him. He’ll have another run or two before having a freshen up in readiness for the new year.

She may go to the mares sale in December on the back of two successive wins at Kempton, first over 6f and then over 7f, but could continue to pay her way before then as she’s still well handicapped on her old form. She’d shown promise before that but had excuses. The ground was too fast at Nottingham on her first start for me and she banged her head on the stalls at Chelmsford.

Like a few of mine, he’s been given a well-earned rest after winning four times this year. He’s won over 1m4f and 1m6f at Wolverhampton and stepped up to 2m to get the job done again at Nottingham. I probably should have won a couple more with him if I’m honest but he can carry on where he left off in those staying handicaps in the new year as a mark of 70 is well within is capabilities.

This big, strong filly is in the autumn sales but I own a share in her and would be happy to keep her for the All-Weather. She had a shoulder injury earlier in the year and it’s been a long road back but she’s sound and happy now so it would be nice to make up for lost time. A daughter of Mastercraftsman, she was second for the third time in a row on her handicap debut at Kempton the other day and enjoyed the step up to 1m3f. I think she’ll get further, in fact.

I had a good summer with this filly, who won at Epsom and Wolverhampton over 7f. She’s got a very smart turn of foot and will get 1m now she’s learning how to race properly. This daughter of Buratino had a tendency to be too keen but has more to offer off her mark of 73 and will be back to hopefully prove me right in December.

This lovely filly has improved since winning at Windsor in September. She followed up off a 6lb higher mark over 6f at Wolverhampton just before the new season started, thanks to a great ride by Rossa Ryan, and I’ll keep her going in those sprint handicaps. The flatter tracks suit her best so we’ll hopefully be back at Wolverhampton, but she’s very uncomplicated.

Though this filly holds an entry in the horses in training sale, I’d very much like to keep her in the yard as she’s shown a lot of promise in just four starts and there’s plenty of untapped potential. She won a 7f maiden at Chelmsford on her second start and hasn’t been out of the first three. She travels well, which is so important on the All-Weather, and tries hard and off 66 can definitely win again.

This Garswood 3yo is still a big baby but he’s now been gelded and is handicapped for a winter campaign. He was beaten less than a length on his handicap debut over 1m at Kempton in mid-October, which I was delighted about as he isn’t really streetwise yet. He’s learning on the job and can continue to progress on tracks where he has a long straight to run at. I’m excited by him and would say he could be my dark horse this winter.

He’s been pretty disappointing but has had excuses and I still think he could be my best horse in the long run. The ground was too firm for him at Haydock Park and he was poorly drawn at Nottingham. I’ll probably give him a break before bringing him back to the All-Weather for 6f and 7f handicaps. He’s dropped in the weights and is unexposed on sand as he’s only run on it once.

This Mehmas gelding hasn’t won this year but works well and will have benefitted from being gelded towards the end of the summer. He probably made life hard for himself by winning on debut at Wolverhampton last year but showed what a nice horse he is when only just failing at Newmarket in July. He’s versatile enough to run over 6f or 7f and has the ability to qualify for one of the nice Good Friday races.
