Chris Wall Stable Tour
23 Sep 2021

Chris Wall has quite rightly established himself as one of the most astute of Newmarket trainers with entries rarely wasted and his results reflecting the shrewdness of his Induna Stable operation.

Wall has notched up 20 winners already from his 120 runs so far this term and his prize money of £218,647 has already dwarfed last year's total of £138,263 from 21 winners.

The star of the season for him so far has been the progressive mare Double Or Bubble who landed the listed Highfield Farm Flying Fillies' Stakes at Pontefract in August and was only narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster this month.

Wall is always one to exploit an opportunity and there have been multiple victories from Kingmania, Bague D'Or, Goldie Hawk, Glen Esk and Castana Dia to maintain standards.

Chris said: "The horses have been going along nicely but we have had a frustrating three weeks with a lot of seconds. Out of eight horses we have five finished second which is annoying but the horses have been running well and consistently. We have just over 30 horses in the yard, and we have done well with a good few winners and a lot winning at a decent level."

With a busy weekend ahead, Chris kindly talked to Tony Elves of about his successful string.

Hi Ho Silver
Silver Spell
7 gr g Camacho - Silver Spell
Winner of four of his 29 starts and currently rated 57. Scored by a head from Mostallim in an apprentice handicap at Leicester on Monday.
He runs in Carol's (Wall) colours and we have kept him for the apprentices to ride. Both Seb Woods and Kaiya Fraser have won on him. Kaiya won on him at Leicester on Monday, and he is a good ride for an inexperienced rider. He needs seven furlongs on a sound surface, and he is a funny old stick in that on some days he's not terribly interested in racing and on other days, like Monday, he will stick his neck out and want to win. He is a bit of Jekyll and Hyde character but a good horse for the purpose he was bought for, and he might run again. There is seven-furlong handicap early in October and he might run there.
Oh It's Saucepot
Oh So Saucy
Sir Percy
7 b m Sir Percy - Oh So Saucy
Winner of five of her 28 starts and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Lawn Ranger on her latest start at Windsor (1m 2f) in August off a mark of 79.
She injured herself on the gallops a couple of week ago - nothing nasty - but she won't run again this season. Up to then she had been second and third and had been running well and a mile and half and a sound surface she is capable on. The race we had in mind for her was the mile and a half handicap at Yarmouth last week. I know she is getting on a bit, but she will staying training another year.
Han Solo Berger
Lord Shanakill
6 b g Lord Shanakill - Dreamaway
Winner of seven of his 45 starts and currently rated 85 (AW) and 78 turf. Finished unplaced, beaten eight and three quarter lengths, to Araifjan on his latest start at Yarmouth (5f) this month off a mark of 80.
He had a successful time last year winning three times and came close to winning a race this year, but he hasn't quite connected. His last two runs have been a bit of a disaster so what he probably wants is a nice holiday. He will come back into training next year. If we can revive his spirits. I would like to think if he rekindles his enthusiasm for the sport he will come back on a good mark.
5 b g Pivotal - Masarah
Winner of three of his 17 starts and currently rated 81. Gained his last success at Newmarket (1m) in May when beating Jean Baptiste a length and a half off a mark of 77.
He is very much a horse who wants a strong run race over a mile so you can get him settled early and then he finishes his race very well. He doesn't mind the ground too much but a sound-ish surface probably suits him better. He is in the nine-furlong handicap at Newmarket on Friday and I thought we might get more than ten runners to guarantee a gallop for him. We will just have to hope that they go a nice pace in front of him. I would have thought that something like a nine-furlong race could be right up his street.
Soldier Hollow
4 b g Soldier Hollow - Batya
Winner of one of his 11 starts and currently rated 78. Finished fifth, beaten five and a quarter lengths, to Farasi Lane at Sandown (1m) in August off a mark of 79.
He is a horse we bought out of Ed Walker's at the Horses-In-Training Sales last autumn and he won decisively making all at Pontefract back in May. He is a horse who likes a bit of cut in the ground and trying to find slower ground and the right race hasn't been easy. We are going to run him at Newmarket on Thursday and see how he goes. As he won decisively, he went up quite a bit and it has made life difficult for him but he remains in good heart and we will hope we can get another run into him before the end of the season.
Double Or Bubble
Mango Lady
Exceed and Excel
4 b f Exceed and Excel - Mango Lady
Winner of four of her 8 starts and currently rated 107. Finished runner-up, beaten a head, to Just Beautiful in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes on her latest outing at Doncaster (7f) this month.
She has had a good year and got off the mark for the year first time out at the Craven meeting and won well there. We then had a frustrating time with her as we got her on the go early to have a crack at the Chartwell Stakes at Lingfield but on the day that came up very soft and she is a fast ground filly so was a non-runner. We tried her over a mile at Royal Ascot but that was too far and since then she has done well. She was second, narrowly beaten, in a listed race at Chelmsford and followed that up with a win in over six furlongs at Pontefract in the Flying Fillies. She then had two very good runs in Group company to finish second at Goodwood and then was narrowly beaten at Doncaster. I think we can interchange between six and seven furlongs with her, and she is very much a summer ground filly. Whether we run her again this season or not is entirely weather dependent and we may make an entry for her in the Bengough Stakes at Ascot next weekend. Though if it rains and the ground goes that really will be her season run. At present the plan is for her to stay in training next year.
Flying Standard
Snow Scene
4 ch g Starspangledbanner - Snow Scene
Winner of two of his 16 starts and currently rated 58. Has finished runner-up in four of his 8 starts this season and beaten only three quarters of a length by Robeam latest at Wolverhampton (2m 1/2f) this month off a mark of 57.
He on the whole he has quite a good year. He is a thorough stayer, and he has had a couple of near misses, but we have still to win with him this year. He takes his race well and for a horse that stays a trip he has run quite often. On the turf he wants a sound surface, and he is equally effective on the AW. He may run again - we have a couple of more options to run through later September and early October and hope he can get his head in front. He is still handicapped to be competitive.
Glen Esk
Ski Slope
4 b g Kyllachy - Ski Slope
Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 70. Gained his last success when completing a hat-trick when beating Photograph a neck at Windsor (1m 2f) in August off a mark of 69.
He got his hat-trick up through the summer and won twice at Windsor and at Haydock. He gave his owners a lot of fun and he wants a mile and a quarter and some cut in the ground. He is a big horse and fast ground is no good to him as he hits the ground too hard. We have him in the nine-furlong handicap at Newmarket on Friday but we will have to monitor the ground for him for that. Having won three, he has gone up a bit and it looked as though the handicapper has got him last time. Though he's a horse who I'm sure will stay in training next year and could improve again. He may have done his winning for this year, but you must never say never.
Goldie Hawk
Always Remembered
Golden Horn
4 b f Golden Horn - Always Remembered
Winner of five of her 12 starts and currently rated 89. Gained her last success at Haydock (1m 3 1/2f) in August when scoring by half a length from Whitehaven off a mark of 82.
She has had a busy season and has won two and been placed a few times. She was running ok on quicker ground earlier in the year but in lesser company and then on softer ground at Haydock she won very well. She is a filly with a pedigree so having got her rating up to nearly 90 we thought we should have a crack at some black type. She ran in the Galtres Stakes where it was too firm and then at Yarmouth last time it was only a mile and a quarter and they didn't go a strong enough gallop but she ran respectably. I think she will stay in training next year very much with a view to getting some black type. Whether we run again this year is debatable - I only have a couple of options for her but if we don't get some ease in the ground, we will pop her away for the winter.
Molly Shaw
Paradise Isle
4 b f Helmet - Paradise Isle
Winner of three of her 12 starts and currently rated 64. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Papa Stour at Yarmouth (6f) this month off her current mark.
She was awarded a race at Yarmouth when she was carried a long way across the track, and I think she may have used up a bit of luck doing that but she has ran well since. She is another we have had a bit of a frustrating season with in that she is a fast ground filly and there are a few occasions where the ground has gone against her, and we have had to take her out. There are some more options on the turf if the ground stays fast but if not, there are some options on the AW. Six furlongs is her thing, and she likes to bowl along and be handy. She is probably about on her mark but where she is she will always be competitive.
Three Year Olds
Bague D'or
3 ch g Belardo - Ravensburg
Winner of two of his 7 starts and currently rated 81. Comfortable two and a three quarter length victory from Saligo Bay at Newmarket (1m 4f) in August off a mark of 77 when coming back from a break but disappointing favourite at Newbury (1m 4f) last weekend when only sixth, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Frontispiece.
He is a nice progressive staying type who won his first race at Yarmouth at the start of the season and won well. He was second next time in a falsely run race and got shuffled back and then didn't quite catch the front runner that day. He thing had a bad dose of ringworm which kept him off the track for quite a long time, but he came back and won well at Newmarket. I wasn't quite sure what he beat there but he did it pretty comfortably. He went to Newbury last week where we thought he could follow up on that, but he was a bit disappointing and finished sixth. I don't think he really liked that very sticky ground and he couldn't get going on it. I think he remains open to further improvement and a mile and a half on a sound surface suits him well.
Castana Dia
Day By Day
Dandy Man
3 ch f Dandy Man - Day By Day
Winner of two of her 8 starts and currently rated 79. Gained her last success at Yarmouth in July when scoring by a neck from Spirited Guest off a mark of 73.
She hasn't been out of the first two in all her starts and I think we bumped into one at Yarmouth last week. She didn't get the clearest of runs but when you are beaten four lengths, I don't think that made a lot of difference. We could give her one more run and she could run over seven furlongs at Newmarket next week. She gives the impression she might stay a bit further, and it will be nice to find out. She stays in training next year and if she stays seven it may open up a few options for her.
Greek Goddess
3 b f Kingman - Greek Goddess
Winner of three of her 6 starts and currently rated 86. Winner of her first two starts this season gaining her latest success at Doncaster (7f) in June when scoring by a length and three quarters from Apres Dark off a mark of 80.
She is another nice progressive filly who won over seven furlongs earlier in the season. When she ran in her last start in a nice fillies' handicap at the July meeting she hung across the track and it was probably firm enough for her. She was a bit jarred and sore after that and things weren't quite right. As she is a nice filly and well-bred she has gone back to the farm and will have a long holiday. We will try again next year. I think she will stay a mile and she is a filly we would like to get black type for as she is an owner/breeder.
Mango Boy
Mango Lady
New Bay
3 gr g New Bay - Mango Lady
No wins from 4 starts and currently rated 77. Came closest to victory in a maiden at Ripon (1m 2f) in August when runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Pride of Priory.
I think he is still a work in progress - the last couple of times things haven't gone right for him. He has run well in three of his maidens and he didn't handle the track at Ripon he didn't handle the track and got unbalanced. On his first run in a handicap at Yarmouth last time he was drawn on the outside, couldn't get any cover and was far too keen and didn't run his race. There is an engine there and we just have to put everything together.
3 br g Territories - Mejala
Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 72. Finished fourth, beaten six and a quarter length, to Atheeb when favourite for a handicap at Newmarket (1m 2f) in August off his current mark.
He is a funny horse and not the fastest of starters for whatever reason which puts him on the back foot. He has shown his best form with some cut in ground and wants a mile and a quarter and possibly a mile and a half. If we can find the right race and the right conditions and we might even run on the AW somewhere. He will run again before the season's out and you would like to think there's a race or two to be won with him.
Posh Girl
3 gr f Outstrip - Sauvage
No wins from 6 starts and currently rated 60. Finished fourth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Fauvetter at Yarmouth (6f) this month off a mark of 62.
I think she is still learning her job and she ran well the last twice at Yarmouth. I sort of got the impression she didn't quite get home over seven having travelled strong in the race. Then at Yarmouth last time she was travelling well and when the eventual winner came up on our outside we just got a bit tight and she just got a bit put off and hesitated for a bit. She still ran fourth and she still has a bit to learn about racing but off her mark she is capable of doing something. Six furlongs on the grass or seven furlongs on the AW.
The Thunderer
Purple Sage
3 b g Gleneagles - Purple Sage
Winner of one of his 9 starts and currently rated 77. Off the mark in a maiden handicap at Yarmouth (1m 2f) in July when beating Jebel Dukhan two and a quarter lengths off a mark of 71.
He is not too bad, and he won at Newmarket earlier in the year where they went a real strong pace in front of him. That suited him and he picked up nicely and stayed on well. He then misfired back at Yarmouth and we ran him on the AW the other night where he was just forced wide around the home turn but although he finished fifth he was only beaten three lengths. I feel if things go his way, staying is his game, and he just needs a bit of luck in running.
Bague D'or
Sticky ground at Newbury was his undoing last weekend and much better than he showed on that occasion.
Suited by a mile on soft ground and could find conditions to his liking before the season's end.
Double Or Bubble
Stable star who has already earned her winter corn, but the continuation of the Indian Summer could see her sign her season off in style in the Bengough Stakes at Ascot on Saturday week.
Flying Standard
Has been thoroughly consistent without getting his head in front but his turn can still come.
The right ground and conditions can see him get his head in front before the end of the campaign.
Returns to Newmarket on Friday and could have been found a decent opportunity to get his head in front again.
