James Ferguson Stable Tour
02 Sep 2021

JAMES FERGUSON raised the bar just a little bit higher at Goodwood last weekend when Mise En Scene provided the ambitious young Newmarket trainer with his first Group 3 victory when coming out on top in thrilling finish to the Prestige Stakes and it put the icing on the cake of what has already been a successful season.

The Saville House trainer enjoyed a more than satisfactory first full season with a trainer's license in 2020 when his 18 winners included a Listed success in St Hugh's Stakes with Zoetic but a double at Goodwood completed by Snowalot took him onto the 21 mark and his prize money tally has more than doubled from last year with £223,165 in the coffers already.

James said: "We are absolutely delighted - the team works so hard and the horse's look fantastic. They say happy yard, happy horses and I couldn't be more proud of my team and let’s hope we can keep it going."

There could well be more cake to be eaten in the closing months of the season and James kindly spoke to Tony Elves for about those under his care.

Older Horses
Arabian King
New Approach
5 ch g New Approach - Barshiba
Winner of four of his 16 starts and currently rated 75. Returned to winning form at Chelmsford (2m) last month when beating Doublethetrouble a length off a mark of 72.
He was my first winner so he is obviously a yard favourite. He just lost his way slightly but we are getting him back on track now and he won nicely at Chelmsford last time. I would like to run him on the grass, I've only ever run him on the All-Weather, and he is in at York and whether I run him there or not hasn't been decided.
Rectory Road
Paco Boy
5 b g Paco Boy - Caerlonore
Winner of five of his 35 starts and currently rated 68. Scored by a length and a quarter from Far From A Ruby at Bath (1m) last month off a mark of 65 on only his second start for the stable.
He was bought by the parents of my young apprentice Alice Bond for her to ride. He did a very good job and he gave her a great ride to win at Bath a couple of weeks ago. She run at Salisbury today and she would have a good chance.
Bella Nouf
Pour Moi
4 b g Pour Moi - Bella Nouf
Winner of one of his 15 starts and currently rated 79. Has finished runner-up on five occasions this season and failed by only a neck behind Red October on latest outing at Lingfield (1m 4f) in August off a mark of 77.
Cozone is a very consistent horse and he hasn't been out of the first three since he joined us but unfortunately he is still looking for his first elusive win which no doubt will come. He is a lovely horse to have in the yard and is very straightforward and he can run over a mile and two or a mile and a half. He can go on the All-Weather or turf but I think he is probably better suited to good ground rather than the All-Weather. We have no real plans and we are waiting for a bit of rain.
Bright Snow
4 b g Camelot - Bright Snow
Winner of two of his seven starts and currently rated 85. Scored by a length and a quarter from Ravens Ark at Goodwood (1m 6f) on Saturday.
Snowalot ran a blinder to win at Goodwood last Saturday to give us a double on the day and he is more than likely to be aimed towards a big handicap at the end of the year. He has come out of his race well and he is very versatile and I think he could take a step up in trip as it just looked like he got going in the closing stages at Goodwood. He could be aimed at something like the Cesarewitch but we will see how he is.
Three Year Olds
Across The Nile
Meeting Waters
3 b f Iffraaj - Meeting Waters
No wins from five starts and currently rated 64. Finished runner-up, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Thunderclap at Kempton (1m) last month off a mark of 63.
She showed a lot last year and she was back to what I thought of her when she ran second last time out at Kempton. I would say she is an All-Weather horse and she should win shortly.
3 b f Mehmas - Dominatrix
Winner of two of her seven starts and currently rated 79. Finished fourth, beaten three quarters of a length, to Marks Bear at Lingfield (6f) in August off her current mark.
Copinet has won this season and I think she is better than her mark. She ran in the Racing League the other day and ran very well and is very consistent. We have no real plans for her yet but we might send her to Lingfield. She is more of an All-Weather horse at the moment but she hasn't had a chance to prove it on the turf. I think she will be a nice filly next year.
Currency Exchange
Mon Bijou
Night Of Thunder
3 ch g Night Of Thunder - Mon Bijou
Winner of one of his 11 starts and currently rated 74. Best most recent effort when finishing fourth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Wink Of An Eye at Sandown (1m 2f) in July off a mark of 78.
Currency Exchange is a bit like Cozone and has been ultra-consistent for us and would have finished a bit closer at Windsor if he hadn't run into a bit of traffic. I would say he is a mile and a quarter horse and he is no doubt a winner in the making.
First Folio
Lilian Baylis
Dark Angel
3 gr g Dark Angel - Lilian Baylis
Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently rated 97. Gained his most important success in a valuable Heritage Handicap at York (6f) in June when beating Blackrod a length and a quarter off a mark of 90.
First Folio obviously won the big handicap up at York then disappointed at Goodwood. I wanted to run at Goodwood and see if we could get away with the soft ground but we didn't and I got that wrong. He came out none the worse for that run and we came out at Newmarket and ran well and it was probably slightly quicker than I would have liked after a hard race at Goodwood. He has been freshened up and is going to run on Sunday at York in the 0-95 at York and he needs good to firm ground. He has won there before, knows where he is and I can see him running well.
Red Genesis
President's Seal
3 ch g Camacho - President's Seal
No wins from three starts and currently rated 78. Finished third, beaten a length and a half, to Undertheboardwalk in a novice event at Salisbury (7f) in August on his latest start.
Red Genesis is a horse I have always thought a lot of. He probably just needed the experience when he ran at Salisbury last time. I thought he would go pretty close and he is a winner in the making.
Smooth Spirit
Charm Spirit
3 b g Charm Spirit - Valonia
Winner of two of his seven starts and currently rated 73. Finished runner-up, beaten a neck, to Clegane on his latest start at Lingfield (7f) this month off a mark of 72.
He is another consistent performer and just needed the run after a bit of a layoff at Nottingham and then he won at Lingfield over seven and then finished second where he came to win his race and then got caught on the line. I would say we were a little unlucky and he runs at Newcastle on Thursday and would have quite a good chance.
3 b g Siyouni - Dalamar
No wins from three starts and currently rated 67. Finished fourth, beaten 13 lengths, to Poet Of Life on his stable debut at Doncaster (1m 2f) in July.
Theyazin is a three-year-old who was been gelded since he was John Gosden and came to mine. He is a nice horse and shaped with promise for me at Doncaster first time. A step up in trip will help his case in handicap company.
3 bay f Kodiac - Zallerina
Winner of two of her eight starts and currently rated 97. Better effort this season when third, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Judicial in a listed event at Chester (6f) in August.
She ran in a Group 3 in France on Sunday and didn't turn up that day. I wouldn't have any plans as yet but she is a very good filly and has already won black type in a Listed race at Chester. She ran a blinder at Chester on her first run of the season and she will benefit from softer ground.
Two Year Olds
2 b c Adaay - Salome
Winner of two of his four starts and currently rated 80. Gained his latest success in a Nursery at Nottingham (6f) in August when beating International Boy by three and three quarter lengths off a mark of 71.
I am delighted with him and he obviously won first time out. The ground was too quick for him at Redcar and then he went and won impressively at Nottingham. He probably wants some cut in the ground and we ran at York because we were 4lb well in. The race at Nottingham probably took more out of him than we thought and they probably went too quick for him on the quicker ground at York. He needs the rain to come and I would say he is going to be a nicer horse next year. Six or seven furlongs I don't think is a problem.
Battle Of The Nile
Gertrude Versed
Havana Gold
2 b c Havana Gold - Gertrude Versed
Winner of one his four starts and currently rated 75. Off the mark with a length victory from Sagittarius in a nursery at Wolverhampton (6f) last month off a mark of 70.
Battle Of The Nile is a nice horse and I have always thought a lot of him. He hadn't shown signs of coltishness at home but when he got to the racecourse he showed that. He has definitely benefitted from being gelded and showed that when winning with a bit in hand at Wolverhampton. Hopefully he can step up and I have penciled him in to go to Carlisle on September in a 0-75 nursery. Hopefully, he can continue to improve and win again.
El Bodegon
Al Andalyya
2 b c Kodiac - Al Andalyya
Winner of one of his two starts. Off the mark with a two-length win from Velazquez at Sandown (7f) in July.
El Bodegon has a lot of talent and he is horse with class. He has a very good pedigree being a full brother to Best Solution. He is going to run over seven furlongs in the Group Prix La Rochette at Longchamp on Sunday and I can, hopefully, see him going there and running well and I could see him being a miler at the end of the year.
Jen's Gift
2 b f Territories - Satsuma
No wins from four starts and currently rated 70. Finished fifth, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Mereside Angel at Ripon (5f) on Tuesday.
She ran at Ripon on Tuesday and was probably unsuited by the track. She is off a mark of 70 and I would like to see her take a step forward now. I will run her on the AW in the next couple of weeks and I have no doubt she will win before the end of the year.
Mise En Scene
2 b f Siyouni - Gadfly
Winner of both of his starts and currently rated 102. Impressive four length victor from Ribaldry at Haydock (7f) in July and followed up with a neck success in the Grade 3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood (7f) in August.
Mise En Scene absolutely delighted us with her performance at Goodwood when winning the Prestige Stakes. She obviously has a lot of class and the first thing Oisin Murphy said when he got off was to step her up to a mile. You can just see that she took a little bit of time to get going and I was very taken with how professional she was for one with so little experience on the racecourse. On only her second start she chased down the leader very impressively and learned a lot. I would say with an extra furlong she would have been very impressive. She has a lot of big entries towards the end of the season and the Fillies’ Mile and Prix Marcel Boussac are obviously under consideration but I am in no rush to get her back out and she is very much a filly for next year. I will discuss with the team before we make any decisions.
Love Street
Invincible Spirit
2 b c Invincible Spirit - Love Street
Unplaced, beaten 12½ lengths, to Hafit on his debut at Newmarket (7f) last month.
He runs at Salisbury on Thursday and has a nice introductory run. I would like to see some progression. He is very much a horse for next year.
Battle Of The Nile
Looked a different proposition since being gelded when winning at Wolverhampton last time and can soon add to that success.
El Bodegon
Lovely improving type who head to Longchamp on Sunday.
First Folio
One of the stable stars and returns to York, scene of his greatest triumph, this weekend.
Mise En Scene
Looks a real find and cracking effort to win the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood last weekend. Can find further improvement with experience and the step up to a mile.
Red Genesis
Still looked on the green side when qualifying for handicaps last time and can take a major leap forward.
Gave the impression he could make further inroads in the staying division when successful at Goodwood last weekend.
