Six To Follow - Racing League Week 2
04 Aug 2021

TENAYA CANYON

17.42 - William Hill Build Your Odds Racing League Race Seven

The opening race on Thursday’s Doncaster fixture on week two is perhaps the most interesting of the night; with familiar faces such as Copper Knight and Saaheq meeting a couple of three-year-olds who remain with potential at this level, including favourite Ballintoy Harbour, a winner at Newmarket three weeks ago.

It’s another three-year-old I hope will take all the beating in the shape of Ed Walker’s Tenaya Canyon, who is now confirming the promise of her impressive Newcastle maiden win last season after a slightly slow start to the campaign.

She gained her first win of the year at Haydock on her penultimate start, turning over odds-on shot Ventura Express, who had bolted up by four lengths at Pontefract earlier that week.

She improved again to finish a length second to Mid Winster over this course and distance last month. Tenaya Canyon gave 4lbs away to the winner on that occasion, and in hindsight, the winner was clearly a well-handicapped horse, having winner having placed in Listed company and in a good handicap at York’s DanteFestival earlier in the season.

Tenaya Canyon was raised a 1lb to 86 for that effort, but replacement of the now-retired Eddy Greatrex in the saddle by useful 5lb claimer Saffie Osborne means she’s actually lower in the weights than when producing a career-best effort last time out. Osborne was flying in the early part of the summer, and has ridden winners at Lingfield on Tuesday and Bath on Wednesday after returning from a spell on the sidelines.

The best price of 6-1 available at time of writing for Tenaya Canyon to win this represents values, and I’d be hopeful she’ll be able to continue her fine run of recent form.

JONAH JONES

18.13 - William Hill Extra Place Races Racing League Race Eight

Saffie Osborne scored 41 points from her full book of rides on the opening week of the Racing League, but I hope she’ll only need two mounts to surpass that this Thursday.

She teams up with Ed Walker again to take the ride on top-weight Jonah Jones, who has admittedly become slightly frustrating but is a better horse than his rating of 88 suggests when he brings his A-game.

Jonah Jones finished front-rank in a number of competitive handicaps throughout last season, most notably when third at Ascot last September, clearly shaping like the best horse in the race after suffering a horrific passage throughout.

He split respective Stewards’ Cup seventh and fourth Desert Safari and Total Commitment when runner-up on his seasonal reappearance at Kempton in April. He was nowhere near as good at Ascot on his only other start of the year, but we know he’s better than he was able to show on that occasion and was generally consistent in 2020.

He’s typically a slow starter and blinkers will go on for the first time at Doncaster, but the 5lb Osborne takes off his back makes him stand out at the weights and it looks a fine opportunity for Jonah Jones to finally get his head back in front at a decent price of 6-1.

DILAWARA

18.48- William Hill Lengthen Your Odds Racing League Race Nine

Team Ireland had a slow evening at Newcastle last week, failing to have a runner reach the placings on the night. They look to have a couple of good chances to improve on that at Doncaster this week, and the best of those may come in the shape of the Joseph O’Brien-trained Dilawara.

The ex-Aga Khan filly won by eight lengths at Longchamp last October, and was sent off favourite for a Listed event at Fontainebleau on her final start for Mikel Delzangles.

She made a satisfactory debut for Joseph O’Brien in a Premier Fillies’ Handicap at the Curragh in July, shaping with some promise despite the race panning out against her. Dilawara left with nowhere to go when the moves were being made and she stayed on into a never-nearer seventh once in the clear, certainly giving the impression that she’d be capable of competing from her opening mark of 88.

Dylan Browne McMonagle comes in for the ride and takes 3lbs off, I’d be hopeful that Dilawara can make it second time lucky for her new yard.

Last week’s winner Echo Beach could be the main danger under a penalty, but has a 6lb penalty in a stronger event and jockey Laura Pearson’s claim has been reduced from 5lb to 3lb, so he’ll have to show an improved performance if he’s to make it back-to-back Racing League successes.

DALANIJUJO

19.20 - William Hill Play Responsibly Racing League Race 10

Bake could prove to be absolute thrown in on his handicap debut from a mark 82; he was a nine-length winner at Yarmouth on his only start this season and showed good form at two when third in a hot Sandown maiden won by Yibir.

He’s the likeliest in the field to produce a dominant performance, but the consistent Dalanijujo looks slightly overpriced from an each-way perspective.

Mick Channon’s filly was consistent without winning in four starts at three last season, the last of which came when third behind Angel Power and Virgin Snow when racing from out of the handicap in a red-hot event at York’s Ebor Festival; that pair finished the season finishing first and third respectively in the Group 3 Pride Stakes at Newmarket.

Dalanijujo confirmed her improvement by winning at Yarmouth on her seasonal comeback and was perhaps unlucky not to finish closer when sixth in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot, having to switch widest of the main group to get any run inside the final two furlongs.

On paper, her fifth in the Pipalong Stakes at Pontefract next time out was a regression, but that was an absurd race with the winner completely stringing the field out and her more recent Newbury third behind another smart filly in Declared Interest is a more accurate reflection of her ability. Serenading, a head in front of her in second on that occasion, reopposes here.

She might not have entirely as much wiggle-room from her mark as the likes of Bake, but she’s proven more than capable of running good races from a mid-to-low 80s rating and I’d have her shorter than the current best price of 9-1.

CORBULO

19.53 - William Hill Pick Your Places Racing League Race Eleven

This is Corbulo’s first foray into a race of this strength, but Brian Meehan’s three-year-old has been steadily progressive this campaign and makes appeal from a feather-weight mark in this event.

The son of Belardo has climbed 18lbs in the ratings since making a winning handicap debut at Bath in April, finishing inside the placings on all five starts this season. His two defeats have come at the hands of clearly well handicapped horses; Kalma, who edged him by a nose at Nottingham, scored again at Wolverhampton and is now rated 8lbs higher than when meeting Corbulo, whilst his Doncaster third surely having come in one of the strongest Class 5s of the season, with the winner, Boltaway, also winning his next two starts and the second Bague D’Or having been an impressive winner at Yarmouth on his prior start..

Corbulo's wins this season look like strong form the level too; his second victory at Bath came at the expense of Commonsensical, who has won twice since, whilst his most recent success at Chester was far cosier than the half-length winning distance suggested.

The 2lb rise given to him by the handicapper looks lenient, though it should be noted that the 3lb claimed by regular pilot George Buckell is absent as Martin Dwyer takes over to ride for Team ODDSbible. He still gets upwards of 6lbs from all of his rivals, though, and this thriving three-year-old has earned the right to make his mark felt in better company.

MOON DAISY

20.25 - William Hill Double Your Odds Racing League Race Twelve

Donnacha O’Brien clearly took care of Moon Daisy as a two-year-old, the daughter of Australia consistently shaping like a longer-term prospect. It’s been more of the same so far at three, and the gradual progress Moon Daisy has made means she’s the pick to now break her maiden at the tenth attempt here.

She was an eyecatcher when finishing midfield in a handicap won by Sir Lamorak on her seasonal reappearance, given an easy time of things once push to came to shove and the penny has seemingly started to drop on her most recent starts, only beaten a nose in first-time blinkers at Leopardstown three weeks ago before performing with credit again upped to 1m6f when third at Galway last week.

She doesn’t do anything quickly and will probably be capable of showing similar form over two miles if asked, but I think this looks one of the weaker races on the card and Moon Daisy has been steadily improving this season. A mark of 71 is workable, and I’d hope she’ll have enough to cope with the drop back down in trip.
