Northern Angle: Qatar Goodwood Festival

COCKALORUM

1.50 Unibet ‘You’re On’ Chesterfield Cup Handicap (1m2f)

Cockalorum has taken his form to a new level this year and arrives on the back of a career best effort over a similar trip at York, when he was edged out by the re-opposing Johnny Drama. Roger Fell’s gelding is ideally drawn for a front-runner and is 1lb better off with his victor despite a 4lb rise. With winning form at Ripon and Pontefract, he promises to act just as well on this undulating track and won’t mind the soft ground either.

LORD RIDDIFORD

4.10 Back To Goodwood Handicap (5f)

John Quinn also runs the likeable top weight El Astronaute but his trailblazing grey is undeniably well handicapped on turf. Smart enough to take a Listed prize on sand in the winter, he is back to the mark he won off over course and distance at the Goodwood Festival in 2018. His close fifth in the Epsom Dash confirmed his ability to make his mark in this sphere and find top gear on an easy surface. In fact, only last autumn the son of Zebedee hit the frame in soft ground handicaps at York and Doncaster and has another big run in his locker off a light weight.

Wednesday

FEARBY

3.00 Group 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes (5f)

Ed Bethell was planning to wait for the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York next month after his progressive colt made a huge impression in winning the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown. However, the in-form young trainer tells me the speedy bay has been so well at home that a crack at this 5f dash couldn’t be overlooked. The son of Havana Gold is top rated and it’s worth noting that his five-length demolition of the re-opposing Mojomaker at the Esher track was achieved on rain-softened ground.

ILLUSTRATING

4.10 British Stallion Studs Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes (5f)

Karl Burke holds this filly in high regard, even though she was unable to confirm her promise in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, when she lost a shoe and wasn’t as well drawn as those who fought out the finish. Dropping into calmer waters can help her get back in the winning groove and justify a likely crack at the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York in August. It’s worth noting, too, that her classy dam Maids Causeway won the Group 2 Rockfel on soft ground.

Thursday

PERFECT POWER

2.25 Group 2 Unibet Richmond Stakes (6f)

Richard Fahey resisted the option of running his expensive Norfolk Stakes winner in the July Stakes and can be justifiably confident of another huge performance here following a nice break from the track. The Royal Ascot form has worked out well, with runner-up Go Bears Go taking the Group 2 Railway Stakes at The Curragh. This step up to 6f should see the son of Ardad in an even better light and he can defy a 3lb penalty in a strong renewal.

HIGHLAND PREMIERE

4.10 Goodwood Racecourse Patrons Nursery Handicap (7f)

Mark Johnston’s substantial son of Highland Reel is improving with every run and despite winning his last two starts looks well treated off a mark of 81. He has proven what a well-balanced individual he is with front-running wins at Hamilton and Catterick and looks well equipped for this step up in grade. The going was officially soft when he dominated his handicap debut up in North Yorkshire three weeks ago and although this demands more, he has the credentials to make his mark.

Friday

RAJINSKY

1.50 Unibet 3 Boosts A Day Goodwood Handicap (2m4.5f)

A compelling case can be made for Tom Dascombe’s admirable stayer, who gets into this marathon off a mark just 2lb higher than the one he won off over 2m at Ripon in April. Since then he has finished a staying on third in the Northumberland Plate and ran better than the placings suggest in a 1m6f heritage handicap at Newmarket last time. The five-year-old was running on with purpose in the final furlong over a trip short of his best and on ground that was lively enough for him. His record shows he is more effective with give underfoot and he’s weighted to be in the thick of things over an extreme trip that looks within reach.

ARTISTIC RIFLES

3.00 Unibet Golden Mile Handicap (1m)

This smart gelding has thrived in the care of young Ed Bethell since arriving from Italy last summer and is a live outsider in a race that demands all the attributes he possesses. A strong traveller who is tactically adaptable and tough in a finish, he promises to thrive on this downhill track. Artistic Rifles battled back to win the Spring Mile at Doncaster before gliding over the ridges to slam a recent winner at Ripon. More was clearly expected of him in the Hambleton Handicap at York in May but he ran well below expectations, pulling off a shoe in the process. Bethell has freshened him up since then and he can prove that a mark of 96 is not beyond him.

Saturday

BICKERSTAFFE

1.55 Unibet Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (6f)

Karl Burke’s son of mud-loving Mayson is improving at the right time as he demonstrated when beating older, more experienced rivals in a Class 3 Ascot handicap on good to soft ground earlier this month. He was well backed that day on the evidence of a promising effort in a red hot 3yo handicap at York and has swerved a premier handicap at The Curragh in favour of this assignment. With a 5lb weight for age allowance in his favour, this exciting colt can make it four wins from just eight starts for his excellent trainer.

ZARZYNI

3.40 Unibet Stewards’ Cup (6f)

The 6lb penalty Zarzyni incurred for a cosy success at Redcar earlier this month should secure him a place in the big sprint feature. David Barron’s gelding has done little wrong since joining his Thirsk yard from Mick Halford in Ireland last autumn, and may have won the valuable Scottish Sprint Cup over the minimum trip at Musselburgh, but for meeting interference at a critical stage. Even so, he still finished in front of subsequent Group 3 winner Come From The Dark and looks ideally suited by this fast-run 6f.
