Alain de Royer Dupre Stable Tour
14 Jul 2021

Alain de Royer Dupre, who has been the training for HH the Aga Khan for nearly 40 years and who became the first French trainer to win the Melbourne Cup in 2010, was going to retire at the end of last season.

However, a complicated and highly unusual year due to Covid-19 meant that he is still at his yard at Chantilly and is still enjoying winning races for his most faithful employer.

“Yes, I wanted to retire, in fact, I still want to retire at some point,” he says with a smile. “But not only could I see some good horses coming through, but it was such a broken-up season last year that I didn’t want to end it on such a weird year.”

Although he has reduced the number of horses in his private yard, he is still very busy with HH the Aga Khan-owned horses.

Here, he tells Liz Price of attheraces.com about his ambitions for the summer, which could, if circumstances become easier, even see a runner or two in England.

Very lightly raced handicapper who has just won a Class 3 handicap over 1 ½ m at Saint-Cloud.
He is in my private yard. He is a handicapper and I’m sure he can win a big handicap. He had a little setback last year and had a bit of a break, but he is fine now and in good form. He went up I think three pounds since his last victory, which is normal and which won’t change much.

He was unbeaten in two starts when stepped up to a Class 1 at ParisLongchamp where he finished fourth.
He ran very well last time. He is a horse that I am really looking forward to seeing again. He was extremely backwards, and I was forced to run him the other day in a better race than I ideally would have wanted for him, but I didn’t want to take him to the provinces. He is going to run another Class 1 race at Deauville and then we shall see if we step him up. He has a really nice turn of foot and seems to be suited by a mile and a quarter.

A Group 2 winner over 1 ¼ and the extended 1 ½ m. Runner-up in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud where she finished a length behind the winner Broome.
There is a slight possibility that she could run in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, but it looks very complicated. I would like to run her there, but with the staff issues and travelling issues, it seems complicated. Hence, she might just go for the Prix Jean Romanet. Obviously, she could possibly run in both. She didn’t have a tough race last time. The jockey never used his stick and she is in great form. She is a good filly and I prefer the mile and a quarter trip for her.

Runner-up of the 1m 3 ½ f Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak, she was the runner-up on her seasonal reappearance in the Group 2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier. Clear from the rest of the field, she couldn’t catch the winner Skazino, who already had a run under his belt this season.
She is running this Wednesday in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil. She ran well last time out and there is a chance she might reverse the result this time, provided that it doesn’t rain too much. And then I will bring her back to races over a mile and a half and for fillies and mares only. She can run over the longer trips, but it depends on the programme and if I can keep her from running against the colts that would be ideal. She is entered in the Yorkshire Oaks, as she has lots of stamina, which you need at York, but again, with the travelling issues, she might just go to Deauville, even though I don’t think it’s ideal.

Lightly raced filly, who is still a maiden in three starts over the mile.
She didn’t run badly at Saint-Cloud. She will probably run at Deauville. She was injured when she ran on her debut and after her last start, for the first time she came home in fine order. She could be interesting to follow at Deauville. She will run over 7 furlongs or the mile.

Runner-up on his debut this May at Chantilly, he finished sixth in a 1m3f maidan at Lyon Parilly.
He has only run twice. He is a very impressive specimen, so he is taking his time. But he is coming on now. He could easily run at Deauville this summer.

Has run twice. Was the runner-up on her second start in a mile listed at ParisLongchamp.
She didn’t run that well last time out. We noticed afterwards that she had suffered a little problem and so I don’t think we will see her at Deauville, but rather when ParisLongchamp opens again. But she is a very good filly.

The team had great hopes for her in the Prix de Diane Longines where she didn’t get into the race and eventually was more or less pulled up by her jockey Christophe Soumillon.
She runs on Wednesday in the Prix de Malleret at ParisLongchamp. I’m a little bit anxious about the weather as she is not built to go in heavy ground. So I will make a last minute decision. As to the Diane, well she didn’t run, so she is not tired. She is a filly for the autumn, for the fillies’ races. I have to see where she runs, as there is also Valia, but I’m hoping she has a good race on Wednesday and then everything will become clearer.

Very lightly raced. Won his last start at Compiegne over 1 ½ m in soft ground.
He has won two races and we are going to give him another go at a Class 1 race. He is improving from one race to the next. He has a lot of stamina and has a nice temperament. He is very consistent. We shall see if we can step him up in class. He is a bit of a late developer.

Winner of a 1 ¼ m maiden and was then stepped up to listed in the Prix Ridgway where he was a bit unlucky in the final yards. Won at Le Lion-d’Angers on Tuesday.
He is a very late developer who needs to run to become stronger. He was a bit unlucky on his penultimate start, but we are not looking for excuses.

Still a maiden after three starts.
I like this horse. He ran well the other day, and he certainly has some ability. I think he is a horse that loves soft ground and who would be ideal for Deauville. He is not overly big or heavy and Deauville will suit him.
