Henry Candy Stable Tour
02 Jul 2021

Henry Candy's enthusiasm for his chosen career never fails to wain and the search for the next big winner still figures high on his list of priorities despite having held a trainer’s licence since the end of 1973.

The likes of Time Charter, Master Willie and Kyllachy have established Candy as a well-respected figure and in recent years the exploits of Twilight Son and Limato have reconfirmed that given the right tools he is a man that can get the job done.

This season's leading light at Kingstone Warren is the progressive mare La Lune who has won both of her starts this season and gained her first Group 3 success in the Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock in May. La Lune heads back up the M6 this weekend in search of greater glories in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks as Candy looks to end a quiet spell in recent weeks.

Henry kindly spokes to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about La Lune and several other interesting members of his team in Wantage.

Winner of six of his 29 starts and currently rated 99. Best effort when third, beaten three quarters of a length, to Dulas at Goodwood (7f) in May off a mark of 100.
He is a wonderful old servant, and I don't know what happened at Salisbury the other day and it was a very disappointing run. He doesn't normally put in that sort of effort and he's very game and loves it all. Hopefully, we can put a line through that performance, but he is very high for a ten-year-old on 99. That's a bit of struggle and he does want soft ground, but he retains all of his old ability. We will see but if we get it right, I am sure he will strike somewhere.

Winner of three of his 19 starts and currently rated 88. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Strawberry Rock in a handicap at Windsor (1m 3 1/2f) last week off a mark of 87.
He is getting better and better and ran a cracking race at Windsor. The ground was soft enough for him as he likes to bounce off the top of the ground really, but he made up a huge amount of ground and has gone up 1lb for his efforts. If we get some summer ground, he will definitely get a mile and a half and we tried a mile and three and a half at Windsor as the next stage. If he gets a mile and a half that will open up a few more possibilities. He is a very game little horse and definitely heading the right way.

Winner of three of her 9 starts and currently rated 104. Has won her two starts this season scoring by a neck from Freyja in a Listed race at Nottingham (1m 2f) in April and following up with a length and three quarter success from Cabaletta in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock (1m 4f) in May.
She seems in very good shape at the moment and the Lancashire Oaks is the plan. I am surprised there aren't more three-year-olds in the race, but I am delighted with that. She has had it very much her own way against the older brigade so far but it is a pretty tough race obviously with Sir Mark Prescott's Alpinista in there and it would be nice if we could get a place. I think she ought to run well and she is improving with age. She was a very small filly as a yearling which is why she didn't go through the sales ring and she has just taken time to mature. I wish I had a few more five-year-olds as they cope a lot better.

He is a lovely horse and a big, big boy now. He taken all this while to mature, and I was tempted to run him at Windsor the other day but the ground turned soft after a lot of rain. He is pretty headstrong, but he will settle in front and has a huge stride on him and takes some catching when he is on form. We will just find a nice mile and a quarter handicap for him and work from there.

Winner of one of her 9 starts and currently rated 82. Finished third, beaten two lengths, to Lovely Breeze in a handicap at Newmarket (6f) last Friday night off a mark of 83.
She is a frustrating filly - she looked impressive when she won her maiden having looked as if she was going to be tailed off and showed a good turn of foot. She seems to be a bit hard to win with and I will stick with these handicaps at the moment. The ground wasn't to her liking at Newmarket, and I think she can definitely do with some cut in the ground. We might try seven furlongs with her, but she did win so well over six we will probably stick to that.

Winner of one of her 6 starts and currently rated 79. Off the mark with a length and a quarter success from Zuba in handicap at Goodwood (1m 4f) in May off a mark of 70 and produced another solid effort at Newmarket (1m 4f) last Saturday when runner-up, beaten a length, to Sayyida off a mark of 75.
She ran well at Newmarket at the weekend, and I think she probably bumped into one and they were a long way clear of the others. She is definitely going the right way, gets a mile and a half well and is a very big, tall leggy filly. She has taken this long to get half mature so I would hope she can carry on improving.

Winner of two of her 13 starts and currently rated 100. Best effort this term on latest start in a listed event at Musselburgh (7f) in June when runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Just Beautiful.
She is improving all the time and a big strong animal now. Graham Lee rode her at Musselburgh and she was a little bit unlucky but I don't think she would have ever have beaten the winner. She didn't corner very well, and Musselburgh is a very unique sort of track. Graham thought it would be worth trying a mile and it is very experimental but we are off to Pontefract next week which is one of the stiffer miles and it may be a disaster but it is worth trying.

She looked very promising when she ran a really good race when finishing runner-up on the AW at Kempton last October. She hasn't quite done it on the turf, but she is working quite nicely again now and hopefully can get her head in front soon. She is a nice filly and wants seven furlongs or a mile.

Finished seventh, beaten seven lengths, to Seattle Rock on her only start in a novice at Newbury (1m).
She works nicely and looks like a nice filly but she just needs to settle. Her full brother Cape Merano was a listed race winner in France. He wasn't the easiest and the mare has bred a few slightly tricky characters. I feel this filly is just a little nervous and needs a bit more practice, but I think she will come good in the second half of the season.

He has taken a bit of working out - he's a great big rangy horse who doesn't look like a sprinter but it seems from his performances that six furlongs would be enough. He ran just ok the other day at Lingfield in pretty horrible ground and he will be running somewhere next week. He seems in good form, and I would be surprised if he doesn't win soon.

Winner of one of his 5 starts and currently rated 87. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Imperial Yellow at Leicester (6f) at the end of May off his current mark.
He's a nice horse and I think he will be a good horse in time. He is a bit immature at the moment and I was slightly disappointed when he got beat on his last start at Leicester, but it was a small field, and he is one of those horses that needs plenty of cover and delivering late. He is in good form, and he will be running in a fortnight's time, but I haven't decided where.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 75. Probably best effort on second start at Goodwood (1m 2f) in May when third, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Via Sistina.
She is a late maturing filly, big and tall, and hopefully coming to herself now. I haven't really worked out her trip - she is going a mile and a quarter on Saturday at Leicester. She didn't get a mile and a half at Chepstow the other day and it wouldn't surprise me if she came back to a mile. There is a bit of a mixture with Fastnet Rock and a Sadler's Wells mare, but she is a filly I like a lot and she has plenty of scope.

Finished runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Super Over on his only start in a novice auction event at Kempton (7f) in May.
He has had a little bit of a back problem and is away doing some water treadmill work. I think he will be nice and it was a very promising first run. He would be a seven-furlong or a mile horse and I am looking forward to having him back. Hopefully, we will have a good autumn with him.

We don't know where we are with most of the two-year-olds at the moment, but she is a filly of Cheveley Park's who is doing a bit of work and going nicely and should be out on the track in three or four weeks’ time.

Unsuited by a small field when beaten at odds-on last time and can show his true colours in more conventional sprint handicaps.
