Charlie Fellowes Stable Tour
23 Jun 2021

Charlie Fellowes hit the crossbar at Royal Ascot last week but will be hoping that he has chances of making it a double strike at the Northumberland Plate Festival at Newcastle this weekend, live on Sky Sports Racing

The Bedford House Stables trainer only sent a handful of runners to the Royal meeting but was narrowly denied the Copper Horse Handicap when Dubious Affair failed by a head and there were performances that augur well from the future from Vadream, who finished third in the Jersey Stakes and from Chiefofchiefs, who was beaten only a length and a half by Rohaan when finishing fourth in the Wokingham.

Dubious Affair has been raised 4lb for her gallant effort in the Copper Horse and gets the opportunity to raise off her Ascot mark of 100 in the Northumberland Plate and Fellowes is hoping for some back up in the big events at Gosforth Park from possibly Blow Your Horn and Byron Hill.

The Newmarket trainer finished runner-up in the Plate with Prince of Arran in 2018 and took the Vase the following year with the recently retired Carnwennan.

Fellowes said: "I was very pleased with our runners at Ascot last week with three of six making the frame and the others running well. We were a bit unlucky with Dubious Affair and she gets the chance to run off the same mark in the Plate. I don't anyone has won both the Plate and the Vase in the same year, and we will give it a shot."

Charlie has Vadream and Onassis set for some Group action shortly and kindy spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about their prospects and several other interesting sorts from Bedford House Stables.

Winner of six of his 35 starts and currently rated 99. Finished fourth, beaten a length and a half, to Rohaan in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot (6f) last Saturday off his current mark.
Chiefofchiefs ran a great race in the Wokingham the other day to finish fourth to Rohaan. I have an inkling that he wants quicker ground. He does go on anything, but I would love to get him in a big handicap over six furlongs on quick ground. He hasn't had that, and it rained before the Victoria Cup and before the Wokingham. On very quick ground at the beginning of the year he cruised through the race, and I would love to see him on quick ground in a big race. He could go to the Stewards' Cup next.

Prince of Arran was going to go for the Northumberland Plate but had a little setback a few weeks. It's only minor but we decided to take our time. He will get an entry in the Melbourne Cup, and we will see how we are going between now and then. He will go for the September Stakes which is always his prep race before the Melbourne Cup and depending how he goes there it will tell us whether we think he is in good enough form to go through the rigmarole to get out to Australia.

He has just been turned out and is having a little holiday. He will have two weeks in a paddock just to freshen him up and then he too will be aimed at the Racing League race through August. His mark fits it perfectly for the turf and he could be a useful horse to have in very valuable races.

He made a really nice seasonal return at Thirsk and then the rain went against him at Ascot the other day. I have to spread his races out as he doesn't like being over raced. We will look for something August time and a mile and a half and decent ground suit him well. He can pick up a nice race.

Winner of five of his 8 starts and currently rated 101. Withdrawn due to unsuitable ground at Royal Ascot last week (heavy) but had scored by a neck from Midnights Legacy when last seen out at Lingfield (1m 4f) in January off a mark of 96.
He sadly couldn't run at Royal Ascot as the ground went complete against him. He has to have a sound surface. He has only won on the AW for me but has won previously on the turf for another trainer and I have no doubt he could be just as good granted quick going. I have entered him in a listed race at Newmarket at the end of this week which looks quite hot. We could well wait for the Old Newton Cup at Haydock provided the ground is quick. His half-brother Dandino was just as good if not better on turf and I have no doubt he can continue on the upgrade and have a good Summer.

Winner of four of her 16 starts and currently rated 104. Finished runner-up, beaten a head, to Amtiyaz on her reappearance in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot (1m 6f) last week off 100.
She was very unlucky the other day in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot where she just got stopped in her run a furlong out and she was only beaten a head. Considering she had a long time of the track that was a very good performance in a very competitive race, and she can only improve for it. She is able to run off the same mark in the Northumberland Plate and is officially 4lb well in there. I think the step up to two miles will suit her, a big field will suit her and hopefully she will be one for black type further down the line. She will be entered in the Lily Langtry at Goodwood.

Winner of two of his 13 starts and currently rated 97. Finished third, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Ascension on his latest start at Newbury (1m) in May off a mark of 97.
King Ottokar had a setback before Ascot so wouldn't have run in the Hunt Cup even if the ground had come up soft. He is just going to need a little bit of time to get over that. His race is the Balmoral Handicap on soft ground at Ascot at the end of the year and we will work back from that. He has to have cut in the ground and would have the speed for seven if the ground was really soft. He can pick up a nice race this year.

Winner of two of his 13 starts and currently rated 80. Finished fifth, beaten four lengths, to The Lamplighter on his latest start at Goodwood (6f) in June off a mark of 82.
The ground got too quick for him at Goodwood the other day and he is very much a soft ground performer. I have my eye on the new Racing League races for him - he's got the perfect profile, they are £50,000 races, he's rated 80 and we have a team in the racing league. He's a very straightforward horse and probably best on a sharp track and he's normally pretty quick out of the gate. I think he's a very good horse to have in our team for those races and he will be freshened up for those races in August.

Winner of three of his 12 starts and currently rated 81. Narrowly failed to complete a hat-trick when runner-up, beaten half a length, to Dalanijujo at Yarmouth (1m) in May off a mark of 78.
He has been declared to run in the Carlisle Bell on Wednesday. He has been a star for us considering we only paid £10,000 for him and he was a little unlucky last time when he got a little too much daylight. He still managed to be beaten only half a length and he's still ahead of his mark and I think he will go well at Carlisle.

Winner of two of his 9 starts and currently rated 87. Winner of his last two starts on the AW scoring by a length and three quarters from Top Fox at Newcastle (1m 4 1/2f) in April off a mark of 77 and following up with a length and a quarter victory from Pearl Beach at Chelmsford (1m 6f) in May off a mark of 83. Finished only eighth, beaten 14 lengths, to Uber Cool on the turf at Chester (1m 5 1/2f) later in May off a mark of 88.
Blow Your Horn found the easier ground at Chester not to his liking and he's by Golden Horn and very much wants a quicker surface and is good on the AW. He is entered in the Northumberland Plate this weekend and I don't think he will get into the big race, but he will get into Vase and he will be very competitive in the Vase.

He won at Yarmouth very nicely and he is a really big boy and still quite an immature horse even though he is four-years-old. He is only going to get better and better. He is also entered in the Northumberland Plate and it is going to be touch and go whether he gets into the Consolation race. She won nicely at Newbury with cut in the ground then I ran her in a three-race at Haydock and the ground was rattling quick. She came back really jarred up from that and it's the last time she will ever run on quick ground. We have given her a pretty easy time to get over that race as she was pretty sore, and we will aim to give her an Autumn campaign when the ground comes in her favour. She looked fantastic this year and, again, is ahead of her mark.

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 89. Off the mark with a two and a half length victory from Crossing The Bar in a novice event at Bath (1m 3 1/2f) in May.
He is a lovely big staying type who won nicely at Bath and then had to run again giving a stack load of weight to three-year-olds. He beat all of them bar one and the one he didn't beat had previously beaten the second in the Derby (Mojo Star). We were really up against it giving the weight away and he had three races in quick succession and so I am in no rush to get him back to the track and I think he will be better with some ease in the ground. We will probably look at a nice Autumn campaign with him and he should be back on track in the middle of July.

Winner of four of her 14 starts and currently rated 107. Finished 10th, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Indie Angle in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes on her reappearance at Royal Ascot (1m) last week.
I was very pleased with her run at Royal Ascot where she travelled like the winner and just found nothing off the bridle. I have always said a mile stretches her even though she won over course and distance at Royal Ascot last year but that was off a mark of 82 and taking on Fillies in a Group 2 is a different kettle of fish. She has come out of the race really well and I think we could drop back to six or seven furlongs if we wanted too. There is the Summer Stakes at York which is a Group 3 Fillies over six and there is the Oak Tree at Goodwood. Those are the two races which spring to mind going forward. She is a quick filly and has definitely got a Group race in her this year.

He stays ten furlongs and I think he will stay further than that and he was due to run at Windsor on Monday, but the meeting was abandoned. George Scott seems to suggest he likes the AW more than the turf and ran much better at Chelmsford the other day when he finished third. I think a track like Wolverhampton or Kempton would suit him a lot better and I it shouldn't be long in winning. He is a very straightforward horse and hopefully we can get his head in front soon.

Gleneaglet has been a bit of a surprise package this year. Her last couple of runs have been nice - she was second in a maiden at Bath and then backed that up when finishing second at Nottingham where the ground was too quick. She is a filly who wants cut in the ground and I hope will really thrive this Autumn. She should be up to winning races over ten furlongs and maybe even further.

Has finished third in both his starts in May - beaten six and three quarter lengths by Derab at Newmarket (1m) and a length and a quarter by Noble Crusade when odds-on at Carlisle (1m 1f).
He is a really nice raw colt who has been declared to run at Nottingham on Thursday. He made a lovely debut at Newmarket before getting turned over at odds-on at Carlisle. A wide draw and greenness went against him, and it was nothing to do with his ability he just was still very much learning. He goes to Nottingham with a great chance and hopefully he can get his head in front. He will want a bit of cut in the ground and he should be a really nice horse this Autumn.

Ivynator has been a bit frustrating this year. I thought he was going to be a nice handicapper when he won at Newcastle on his third start. A few things have gone against him and there were little excuses on every run. I think he wants further, and I think he wants to be ridden more patiently. I haven't given up on him and he can win off his mark.

Well beaten when unplaced to Pomelo on her only start at Wolverhampton (1m 1/2f) in November.
She ran a lot better than her finishing position suggested on her debut at Wolverhampton last year. She had a setback in the Spring that prevented her from making the track and she is a big girl with a nice pedigree and a very attractive filly. I think she has quickened up through the Winter and is definitely one to follow. She is a little while away from the racetrack and is probably one for the Autumn.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 77. Best effort when fourth, beaten six and three quarter lengths, to Glen Savage on her reappearance at Newbury (1m 3f) in April.
She has disappointed us a little and when she ran at Kempton at the backend of last year, we thought she was going to be a proper filly. Her run at Newbury was good but last time out at Kempton was very disappointing. We have given her a bit of time to get over that race and she is entered to run at Doncaster on Friday. I think she will love the track and she is stepping up to a mile and six. She will stay all day and her brother ran in the Ascot Stakes on the first day of Royal Ascot and finished fourth. I think she is going to be a nice filly in time she is an out and out stayer and hopefully will run better on Friday.

He is a frustrating horse and was a Breeze-Up and still think's he's a Breeze-Up as he wants to go flat out everywhere. He has to be ridden cold so he switches off early and if he does that, he will be competitive but at the moment he is proving difficult through the first half of the race. He runs at Newcastle on Thursday, and I think the track will suit him.

Winner of one of her 3 starts and currently rated 73. Off the mark with a length and a quarter success from Rabat in a maiden at Yarmouth (7f) this month.
She surprised me recently at Yarmouth when winning at 33-1. She had shown promise on her debut and then Lingfield was the right track to run her at. She's got ability but also has a lot of temperament. If her head continues in the right direction, she could be a useful filly this year but she is going to be needed to be treated with kid gloves.

No wins from 5 starts and currently rated 63. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Merry Secret at Nottingham (6f) this month off her current mark.
She ran much better the other day when finishing second at Nottingham despite getting very unbalanced on the track. Six furlongs on quick ground is her trip and she took a long time to come to herself and had her Winter coat until recently. I am hoping that she is blossoming now and that a mark of 63 underestimates her. She should be winning handicaps.

Winner of one of her four starts and currently rated 103. Highly creditable third, beaten two lengths, to Creative Force in the Group 3 Jersery Stakes at Royal Ascot (7f) last week.
Vadream ran an absolute blinder in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last week when finishing third. I think it was really good Jersey against some seriously good colts. I think we ran on the worst ground too and you can upgrade her run. She is a very talented filly and I think seven furlongs is her maximum and she could run anywhere. The Oak Tree is the obvious race for her and we will keep her and Onassis apart. You have races like the Maurice de Gheest and the Prix de la Foret is she proves up to it. She was running against more experienced rivals at Ascot (It was only her fourth start and I think that was a pretty impressive performance from her.

Winner of one of her 3 starts. Off the mark with a length and a half success from Sophie's Star at Lingfield (5f) in May. Creditable effort when unplaced, beaten six and three quarter lengths, to Sandrine in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot (6f) last week.
She wanted rain but not as much as we got in the Albany last week. and she got bogged down in the mud. She is a very talented filly, and I would like to think she is well up to black type this year and is hopefully running in some nice races through the second half of the season. We may drop her back to a novice and give her a confidence booster then aim at something nice - something like the Lowther springs to mind.

He hasn't made the racecourse yet and is a really big staying type. He is a really good-looking horse but has had a few niggles and hasn't made the track as yet. That's more due to his size than anything else and I think he's going to make a nice stayer in time.

She ran a lovely race at Lingfield when finishing third. She just half missed the break and ran a little green on a track where you need to be switched on. Her work had been decent, and I think she is another nice filly.

I wasn't disappointed with his debut. He ran at Haydock and got behind on a track where it is difficult to come from behind. He will stay a mile and further no problem and could go to Epsom in a couple of weeks’ time. I would like to think he will take a big step forward from his debut.
