Ed Dunlop Stable Tour
03 Jun 2021

ED DUNLOP has been no stranger to Group 1 success in over 25 years with a trainer's license but even he could be excused for believing in fairytales if John Leeper can achieve the possibly unimaginable and lift the Cazoo Derby at Epsom on Saturday.

The Frankel colt is out of the unforgettable Snow Fairy, who provided Dunlop with some halcyon days in her career - lifting both the Oaks and the Irish Oaks and then signing off her glittering career with a victory from Nathaniel and St Nicholas Abbey in the 2012 Irish Champion Stakes.

The colt is named after his late father, and former trainer John Dunlop, who also left racegoers with a multitude of fond memories during his illustrious training career and John Leeper has been making rapid strides as he heads to his most testing day at Epsom.

His maiden win at Newcastle in April had plenty of tongues wagging in admiration and, in a race run at a muddling pace, he soon stamped his authority on proceedings when landing the Listed Fairway Stakes at Newmarket as his preparation for the Derby.

John Leeper is clearly the star of the show at La Grange Stables, Newmarket; and Dunlop gave Tony Elves of attheraces.com the latest news on his Derby contender and the rest of his squad here.

Winner of six of his 37 starts and currently rated 89. Made a winning reappearance at Leicester (1m 4f) in April off a mark of 87.
He won first time out for us at Leicester and didn't appear to handle conditions at Epsom next time out. He is an old man but has done very well for us and is a fun horse and creeping down the handicap as a result of his age. He could run in a handicap on June 10 in a mile and six at Goodwood.

Winner of nine of his 46 starts and currently rated 105. Best effort this term when finishing fourth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Gifts of Gold in a very valuable handicap at Riyadh (1m 7f) in February.
He is as Ancient as you and I but has won over £700,000 in prize money now. He ran very well when fourth in Saudi Arabia and I took him to France where he won last year but unfortunately it rained all day long and it was bottomless ground over two miles and he simply didn't stay or handle it. He is in the Hardwicke Stakes, the Curragh Cup and those sort of Group 3s and he still seems to have a good turn of foot and he has been a great servant to us all.

He did very well for us last year and finished third in the Silver Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. To be honest he has been disappointing this year. He is six and loves bottomless ground and won at Haydock twice. He is a nice horse but we are back to the drawing board with him but he has good owners and we might give him a holiday and bring him back later in the year.

He is another old family friend who has been for us awhile and wins a race for us every year. He ran very well from a bad draw when giving the outside to no one on the All-Weather and seems to have taken it well. We are keen to go on the grass before it gets too firm and he is in good form but the handicapper knows more about him than you or I do.

Winner of five of her 37 starts and currently rated 58. Runner-up, beaten half a length, to Thomas Lanfiere at Yarmouth (1m) last week off a mark of 57.
She won five for us last year and the handicapper obviously got her. She had a holiday and was slightly disappointing in the first part but I was thrilled with the way she ran at Yarmouth when second the other day. She ran really well and hopefully she can win again for her partnership of great people.

Winner of six of his 42 starts and currently rated 79 (AW) and 68 (Turf). Came closest to victory this year when third, beaten half a length, to Enough Already at Lingfield (1m 2f) in February off a mark of 79.
He has been a right little star and won five races on the All-Weather last year and is probably a bit high on the All-Weather now and has a much lower rating on the turf. He wants fast ground and has an entry in a 0-70 over a mile and a quarter at Goodwood on Sunday. He will run there if conditions are right - he is in very good form and has had a holiday after his All-Weather campaign.

He has won two this year and is son of a filly of ours who won the Albany Stakes and by Shamardal and looks a miler. He likes fast ground and is a fine, good-looking horse. I don't know why he ran so badly at Leicester the other day.

He is horse we bought off Ed Walker last year and he did very well for Ed. He ran very well first time for us but he has had a few issues since. He is ready to go again now and could have his first run back at Chelmsford this week. He hasn't run particularly well at Chelmsford but there are few AW options for him at the moment and he is ok.

Winner of two of his 11 starts and currently rated 92. Gained his last success at Newmarket (1m 2f) in May when awarded the race after being bumped and carried right by Good Birthday when failing by a short head off a mark of 88. Finished runner-up, beaten eight and a half lengths, to Quickthorn in a handicap at Haydock (1m 4f) on Saturday off a mark of 92.
We ran him first time at a mile and a half at Haydock on Saturday and I don't think that Mark Crehan, who did very well on him when getting the race in the Stewards’ Room at Newmarket, would mind me saying that the horse did too much in front. He jumped the boxes and was a bit keen in front but having said that we would never have beaten the winner of Hughie Morrison's. He is a fun handicapper and ground is probably relevant and he doesn't want it too firm. He is adaptable between ten furlongs and twelve and there are no targets and hopefully he can continue being a fun horse.

He has been a little bit of a disappointing horse. He won a handicap first time impressively but has frustrated us. He ran very well in an apprentice race here at Newmarket and it took him to Catterick for the ground on Saturday and he was fourth. He hasn't the speed for a quick six furlongs and he wants a stiff six or easy seven and no fast ground. I feel he should have done better than he has.

No wins from six starts and currently rated 75. Better effort this term on his reappearance in a novice event at Lingfield (7f) in April when third, beaten a length and a half, to Adelita.
He has some very good maiden form and has been disappointing. He ran very well at Ascot first time out last year and we are probably going to drop him back in trip as there is a sprinting pedigree on his dam's side. He has some talent but he has been frustrating so far.

He did well the other day and it was probably trainer cock up in the past as he looked like a horse who wanted a mile and a quarter but there is actually speed on his dam's side - he's out of an Anabaa mare. He battled on well with a short price horse back in third and he has taken the race well. He wouldn't want to run on firm ground so we will have to be careful there and he will stay at a mile.

He won his handicap on the All-Weather at Wolverhampton and had his first run on the turf at Windsor the other day but didn't come up to expectations. He is a fun handicapper and no star. He didn't like the fast ground at Windsor and we will have to go back on the All-Weather with him. He wasn't the same horse as he was on an artificial surface and he won't run on the turf again.

Winner of two of his three starts and currently rated 106. Off the mark in impressive style at Newcastle (1m 2f) in April when beating Moktasaab four lengths and followed up in similar style when scoring by a length and three quarters from Tasman Bay in a Listed event at Newmarket (1m 2f) in May.
John Leeper has created lots of excitement concerning the Derby this weekend. It is his first time at a mile and a half but you would like to hope he would stay a mile and a half being out of an Oaks winner and being by Frankel whose progeny appear to stay well. His maiden win was impressive and time will tell what he beat - I know a winner or two have come out of the race already. The Derby Trial that he won was a very strange race as they went so slow but I thought he did well to win considering. With regards to the Derby, he needs to improve with the main principals and I can see why there has been some interest in him but he is very much a horse to look forward to and hopefully he can do well on Saturday. He was very relaxed and well behaved on his visit to Epsom and enjoyed himself and took everything in his side. The ground was on the soft side and he didn't seem to mind that and he is a good moving horse so I think good ground would be fine for him. Fingers crossed all goes well up to the race and we have had no problems with him. Whether he is an experienced enough horse to do it we don't know and we will have to see how we go.

He has come out of the race very fresh and I question what he did in the race. We may have to put some headgear on him but he was very ordinary the other day and we don't know why.

No wins from four runs and currently rated 75. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Mejthaam in a maiden at Wolverhampton (6f) last week on his latest start.
She has been placed twice and was second the other day in a six-furlong maiden. She is no star but should win a little maiden and maybe a handicap. She tries very hard and six or seven furlongs suit.

Winner of two of her four starts. Off the mark with a two and a quarter lengths victory from Night Arc in a novice at Leicester (5f) in April and scored by two and a half lengths from Tardis in a novice event at Yarmouth (5f) on Tuesday evening.
There was obviously something wrong with her when she disappointed us in the Listed Marygate Stakes at York and we don't know why she ran so poorly but she bounced back to form at Yarmouth on Tuesday and I was very impressed with her. Royal Ascot has to come under consideration.

Unraced.
She is an intended runner at Doncaster on Saturday and she is a nice filly who we like.

Finished fourth, beaten a length and a quarter, to Miss Houdini in a novice at Redcar (6f) in May.
He ran well from a bad draw at Redcar and I think he would have gone close to winning first time out if he had been drawn with them which is unusual for us to have a winner first time out. He is a strong powerful horse who will get six and seven furlongs and maybe up to a mile. He is a nice horse who will be winning races soon.

Finished fourth, beaten eight and a half lengths, to Gisburn on his debut at Newbury (6f) in May.
He is a nice horse who ran very well at Newbury on bad ground when finishing fourth to an impressive winner of Richard Hannon's who I think is fancied for Ascot. He will stay further but he has plenty of speed on his dam's side and is a horse we like and is above average. I hope he can be very competitive in his next start.

Finished fifth, beaten a length and a half, to Ammolite in a maiden at Lingfield (7f) on Tuesday.
I was very happy with her debut and she came right up the middle and probably wasn't on the favoured ground on her debut at Lingfield on Tuesday. She was only beaten a length and a half and should improve. She should be a nice filly to go forward with.

Showed a pleasing attitude when getting off the mark at Ripon and can build on that success.

Bounced back from a disappointing run at York at Yarmouth on Tuesday night and this speedster can win plenty more over the minimum trip.

Takes a giant step up in class in the Derby on Saturday but if ever a horse was bred for Epsom victory he is one.

Put in his place by a well handicapped rival at Haydock last weekend but that won't always be the case and has further successes in him.

Very pleasing debut at Lingfield on Tuesday and can soon make her mark.
