Michael Bell Stable Tour
20 May 2021

MICHAEL BELL suffered a blow when The Lir Jet wasn't quite right to contest last Sunday's French 2000 Guineas but that may prove a blessing in disguise as the stable's top three-year-old resets his sites on sprinting goals.

The Prince of Lir colt provided the Fitzroy House team with a Royal Ascot winner in 2020 when beating the Wesley Ward-trained Golden Pal in the Norfolk Stakes and is set head to Haydock this weekend for a crack at the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes over six furlongs.

The Lir Jet made an admirable reappearance in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury in April when third, beaten half a length, to Chindit and his appreciation of the Ascot slopes is not lost on the vastly experienced Bell who has farmed plenty of Group 1 success during his 32 years in Newmarket.

A good performance on Saturday would secure a return trip to Ascot for the Commonwealth Cup and success for his likeable trainer would be nothing more than he deserves.

Bell looks likely to rest on his team of two-year-olds this season, with Dairerin and Spring Is Sprung already looking above average among plenty of choicely bred sorts that could well provide Bell and his team with future glories at a high level.

Michael kindly spoke to Tony Elves for about those he hopes can do well for him during the course of this season and beyond.

Older Horses
Lethal Lunch
Pin Cushion
Lethal Force
6 gr g Lethal Force - Pin Cushion
Winner of six of his 26 starts and currently rated 92. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Dazzling Dan in a handicap at Yarmouth (7f) in April off his current mark.
Lethal Lunch has been a real fun horse since he was bought in October for Middleham Park and he has already won on a Saturday afternoon and he may have another nice day in the sun. Something like the Bunbury Cup at the July meeting could be a good target for him.
Platform Nineteen
Susan Stroman
5 ch g Australia - Susan Stroman
Winner of four of his nine starts and currently rated 85. Was completing a four-timer when beating Forewarning three quarters of a length in a handicap at York (2m ½f) in September 2019 off a mark of 79.
He is back in training after missing the whole of last year and is doing routine canters now. He looked a very progressive stayer as a three-year-old and, hopefully, he can continue his upward curve when he gets back on the track.
Maxi Boy
Lavender And Lace
Oasis Dream
4 b c Oasis Dream - Lavender And Lace
Winner of one of his seven starts and currently rated 94. Finished ninth, beaten 13 lengths, to Ametist in a handicap at Newmarket (7f) on Saturday.
Hopefully he will run in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot. He has had a few issues in the past but he seems on song now and ran well for a long way at Newmarket on Saturday. He was very sick last year and it's a question of whether we can get him back to his best.
Stone Circle
Candlehill Girl
No Nay Never
4 ch g No Nay Never - Candlehill Girl
Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 85. Unplaced in both his starts this season at Newmarket (6f) and Ascot (6f) in May.
He has been a fun horse and normally takes a couple of races to get fit and it looks like the same is happening this year. He is entered this week and I don't think he is far away from being on a winning mark.
Three Year Olds
Big Kitty
Bobby's Kitten
3 b f Bobby's Kitten - Bipartisan
No wins from three starts and currently rated 67. Finished fifth, beaten five and a quarter lengths, to Bakr at Kempton (7f) in January.
She has been a tad unlucky and we are going to drop back to six furlongs at Nottingham on Tuesday. She has been working extremely well and hopefully she can get her head in front sooner rather than later.
3 b g Kodiac - Allegation
No wins from four starts and currently rated 69. Finished sixth, beaten 17 lengths, to Arthur's Angel on his reappearance at Lingfield (1m 2f) this month off his current mark.
Copake ran well for a long way on his seasonal debut at Lingfield the other day. He is likely to get a couple of pounds relief so hopefully will go close next time. He has some talent.
Coconut Kreek
Oasis Dream
3 b g Oasis Dream - Coconut Kreek
Winner of one of his four starts and currently rated 76. Finished fifth, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Maison De York at Redcar (1m) in April off a mark of 77.
Crane has entries coming up and looks a very talented horse in the mornings. He won his handicap well and the end of last year and it was a messy race he ran in at Redcar. He probably wasn't on the best bit of the track or in the best position and the race ran away from him. Hopefully, he can put that experience to use and go close next time.
Cream Of The Crop
I'm So Glad
3 b f Shalaa - I'm So Glad
Winner of one of her five starts and currently rated 74. Finished fifth, beaten three lengths, to Fizzy Feet at Windsor (6f) last week.
She ran a pleasing race on her reappearance at Yarmouth and then got buffeted about at Windsor. She will probably get a couple of pounds relief from the handicapper and I will be very disappointed if she doesn't go close next time.
Crystal Guard
Crystal Melody
Lope De Vega
3 b c Lope De Vega - Crystal Melody
Promise in both starts at two and finished third, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Fairmac at Ayr (7f) in September when last seen out.
Crystal Guard is on the cusp of making his seasonal reappearance. He cut himself quite badly when he got loose in the spring but he is in full work now and looked quite promising in two runs last year. He should be a quite nice middle to high handicapper with a bit of luck.
Holy Bee
Scarlet Honey
Declaration Of War
3 ch f Declaration Of War - Scarlet Honey
Holy Bee is about to have her first start. She is a filly with a nice pedigree and she has just had a few niggling issues that have kept her off the track. She is in full work now and should run later this month or June at the latest. She will start off in a seven furlong or a mile fillies maiden.
3 b f Camelot - Forthefirstime
No wins from four starts and currently rated 72. Finished third, beaten three lengths, to Save A Forest at Windsor (1m 2f) in April off her current mark.
Horsefly was an eyecatcher on her reappearance at Windsor and has always looked good in the mornings. I hope she is one of those fillies that can just keep improving as the season develops.
Sand Vixen
Dark Angel
3 b g Dark Angel - Sand Vixen
Winner of one of his five starts and currently rated 85. Finished sixth, beaten seven lengths, to Tawleed on his reappearance at Newmarket (7f) in May.
Inveigle pulled too hard for his own good at Newmarket on his seasonal return. We are going to send him on a round track and there are a couple of options on the All-Weather. He looks an extremely talented horse in the mornings and hopefully he can get it together like he did when winning his maiden last year and find some consistency on the track.
Fast Company
3 b f Fast Company - Locharia
Winner of one of her nine starts and currently rated 63. Scored by eight and a half lengths from Captain St Lucifer in a 0-55 Classified Stakes at Yarmouth (1m 2f) in April.
Lochanthem spreadeagled a weak field at Yarmouth and the handicapper hit her pretty hard. I then ran her back quickly at Windsor as she was well in under her penalty but the race probably came too soon. She is due to run again shortly and should be up to getting her head in front again.
Reliable Man
3 ch g Reliable Man - Quenching
He makes his debut this week and he is a well-bred horse whose full brother Master Brewer was a good earner for us and went onto be sold to Hong Kong. He is a nice horse and I am quite excited about seeing him run. He is going to start over seven furlong or a mile but could end up over a mile and a quarter.
Olympic Theatre
Madame Vestris
3 b g Mayson - Madame Vestris
One win from eight starts and currently rated 70. Off the mark with a length and a quarter success at Windsor (1m 3 ½f).
He has been fun horse and he had a lot of podium finishes without getting the gold medal but he put that right at Windsor last night and hopefully can go on from here.
Silver Mirage
3 b g Camelot - Silver Mirage
Winner of one of his five starts and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Greystoke off a mark of 74 at Redcar (1m 2f) in April.
He started off the season on a very good mark and unfortunately has already gone up 13lb for winning one £2,322 race which is a poor reflection of racing's current climate. Hopefully, he is a progressive stayer in the making and he can definitely win again before too long.
Tall Order
3 b c Muhaarar - Fate
Finished fourth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Belloccio on his debut at Salisbury (1m) in October.
Tall Order ran well on his only start last year and unfortunately had a little setback at the end of February. He is back cantering now and the form of his maiden is some of the best around. Given his pedigree, his looks and how promisingly he ran we are really looking forward to getting him on the track. As he has only started cantering, he probably won't be ready to run for a couple of months but he will be worth waiting for.
The Lir Jet
Paper Dreams
Prince Of Lir
3 b c Prince Of Lir - Paper Dreams
Winner of two of his seven starts and currently rated 108.
Hopefully he runs in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock as long as the ground is not desperate either way. He is being targeted at the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and he is in good order. He loves Ascot and it will be good to see how he gets on. Last year's Queen Mary winner is coming over from America and these Group 1s are never given to you on a plate.
True Courage
Pearly Steph
Le Havre
3 br g Le Havre - Pearly Steph
No wins from four starts and currently rated 65. Finished eighth, beaten 14 lengths, to Bobby Kennedy at Bath (1m 3 ½f) this month on his reappearance.
He ran ok on his seasonal return and while not being in our A Team can hopefully get his act together as he matures and works his way up the ladder. He is a very laidback horse and I don't think the penny has dropped yet.
Twilight Heir
Twilight Son
3 b g Twilight Son - Xtrasensory
Winner of three of his seven starts and currently rated 85. Has won both his start this season scoring by a head from Charlie Fellowes at Lingfield (6f) in February off a mark of 80 and following up with a neck defeat of Elusive Treat at Chelmsford (6f) in March off a mark of 83.
He has had a very good year thus far and his principal aim is the Palace Of Holyrood House Handicap at Royal Ascot. He probably needs to go up a few more pounds so we are looking to run him on May 25 or 29 and have him all singing and dancing for Royal Ascot. He is a smart sprinter.
Two Year Olds
2 b c New Bay - Levanto
He is a New Bay colt we bought inexpensively but the mare was highly rated. She has already bred a winner and his full brother is very promising.
Baltimore Boy
2 b c Starspangledbanner - Biaraafa
Baltimore Boy looks a nice colt. I trained his mother Biaraafa who was a dual winner and wasn't a star herself but was from a good family. I was very taken with this colt at the sales and he is going nicely. We are looking forward to him in the second half of the year.
Between The Sheets
Shena's Dream
El Kabeir
2 gr f El Kabeir - Shena's Dream
Finished fifth, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Get Ahead on her debut at Ascot (5f) in May.
She is a half-sister to Miss Amulet who won the Lowther and was Group 1-placed in the Cheveley Park and the Breeders’ Cup Fillies Mile. She made a pleasing debut at Ascot and looks a readymade winner. Hopefully, she will make up into a pattern performer like her sister.
Weekend Getaway
Free Eagle
2 b c Free Eagle - Weekend Getaway
She looks extremely well bought and is owned by a good sportsman in Michael Buckley. It is his first horse here and I am really looking forward to seeing him run. He is a horse we like.
Spill The Beans
2 b c Spill The Beans - Sakhya
Winner of one of his two starts. Scored by a neck from Showtime Mahomes at Ripon (5f) this month and beaten only a nose by Dukebox in a conditions event at Newbury (6f) on Saturday.
He won on his debut at Ripon and was bought relatively inexpensively by my son Nick for a new owner Peter Trainor. He ran another cracker at Newbury on Saturday and he looks to have a bright future.
2 b c Camelot - Debdebdeb
He is out of Debdebdeb who won on the Flat over a mile before switching to hurdles and got three miles. In theory this colt could be a big slow bugger but he is not and I really like him. There is some speed in the family and I think he is a smashing horse. He has a good temperament and is a good mover and we like what we see. He should be out in August/September.
Great Max
2 b c Wootton Bassett -Teeslemee
He is out of a sister to Suits You who won the Chesham Stakes and I am trying to get Great Max to the Chesham. He looks a high-class horse in the mornings and he is due to run at the end of the month. If all goes according to plan he will head to Royal Ascot.
2 b c Muhaarar - Interchange
He is a good mover and will be out in the second half of the season. He is a nice horse in the making.
Heatherdown Hero
2 b c Sea The Moon - Mariee
He is a colt who is owned by whole load of guys who went to the same school as myself 100 years ago! It would be very nice if this horse worked out - he looks very promising in the mornings and the Heatherdown lot have had a couple with me who have been pretty ordinary so I am hoping this is third time lucky.
2 b f Iffraaj - Set To Music
She is another filly of Her Majesty, The Queen's and she is out of Set To Music who was a good filly for us. She is a full sister to Eightsome Reel who was a good horse and all the riders on her are very sweet on her.
John O'Groats
2 b c Dabirsim - Ecume du Jour
He is out of dam that won and he goes well. He looks quite a nice horse and we like him. He is qualified for the lowest grade of races and he will get his head in front.
King Eagle
2 b c Frankel - The Lark
He is still at Malcolm Bastard's but he is coming on very well and he is due to come to us in the next couple of weeks. With that pedigree he is one to look forward to.
King Of The Kippax
2 b c El Mansour - Timepecker
For those who don't know Colin Bell was called King Of The Kippax at Maine Road and he is owned by Middleham Park. He moves well and the dam was a stakes winner. He is a very bonny horse with a good attitude who shouldn't be too long in gracing the track with his presence.
2 ch c Recorder - Daring Aim
I don't imagine Recorder has a very big crop but I think he would have been a very good horse. He won the Acomb at York and then went wrong and being by Galileo out of Memory he could have a future as a stallion. This is a good advertisement for his stock and he won't be too long in coming to hand.
Miss Harmony
2 ch f Tamayuz - Muaamara
Her brother Showalong won at the Chester May meeting for Tim Easterby and is rated 92. She is a nice filly and a little bit buzzy but goes well. She will be out in June or July.
2 b f No Nay Never - Hidden Charms
She was bought at the Breeze-Ups and looks quite sharp and is on the cusp of making her debut. Hopefully she will be competitive wherever she runs.
One Morning
2 b f Gleneagles - All's Forgotten
She is owned and bred by Lady Bamford which makes her a three-quarter brother to Shantaram, Forever Now and To Eternity who were all Stakes winners. She looks a good, strong-bodied filly and I would be hopeful for her - she looks nice.
Present Moment
2 b f No Nay Never - Danehill's Dream
She is a sister to a Stakes winner Yesterday Once More and she is a nice filly. She is a May foal but she doesn't look it and we like what we see.
Pub Crawl
2 b c Noble Mission - Waterhole
He is a bay colt foaled in January and he had a little bit of a setback at the beginning of May which stopped me from getting on with him too soon but he will be a very nice horse for September onwards.
2 b c Invincible Spirit - Sariska
He is out of one of our favourite ever racemares, Sariska. It has to be said she has been a disappointing broodmare but this colt looks much more precocious and forward than she has had, and hopefully he can gives us all some fun days in the sun.
Spring Is Sprung
Oasis Dream
2 b c Oasis Dream - Kinematic
Winner of one of his two starts. Off the mark at Windsor (5f) in April when beating Fair And Square a length and a half.
He won nicely at Windsor and he could go for the National Stakes or go straight to Royal Ascot. He is a smart two-year-old and the form is working out well.
2 b f Time Test - Twizzle
She was bought at the Breeze-Ups recently and looks quite sharp and is pretty well ready to go.
2 ch f Lope De Vega - Bristol Bay
She is a sister to Bay Of Poets and should be a nice filly for the second half of the year.
2 b f Sir Percy - Mambo Gold
She is from a good family and Mambo Gold is a half-sister to Ocean Silk and goes back to Divine Proportions. She was inexpensively bought and I think we could work our way up the ladder with her.
2 b f Galileo - Lightning Thunder
She is out of a mare that was runner-up in two 1000 Guineas and she is not named yet. She is not ready to come in yet but with that breeding she would be one to look forward to.
User Kindly
2 b c Golden Horn - Round Midnight
He comes from a good Gredley family and looks a pretty nice horse. He is a big strong good mover and one for later on.
Cream Of The Crop
Messed about last time at Windsor and could well be on a winning mark next time.
Gutsy performance when beaten a nose at Newbury on Saturday and has plenty of more wins in him.
Plenty to like about her Windsor reappearance and can step up on that effort soon.
Brother to Master Brewer who did so well for the stable and his debut is eagerly awaited.
Spring Is Sprung
Likeable sort who could soon be adding to his Windsor novice success.
The Lir Jet
Turns his attentions back to sprinting at Haydock this weekend and last year's Norfolk Stakes winner could well book his return to Royal Ascot.
