Tom Dascombe Stable Tour
03 May 2021

TOM DASCOMBE looks forward to his local at meeting at Chester with relish every season. This year even more so at Manor House Stables, Cheshire, after the meeting was called off 12 months ago due to Covid.

The Dascombe team had to wait for the final day of the 2019 meeting to hit the scoreboard but there was plenty of celebration in the camp when Sha La La La Lee took the Grosvenor Handicap under Jane Elliott and then a double was completed by the same jockey when She Can Boogie blazed the trail in the White Oaks Conditions Stakes.

The two-year-old division would appear to be the best chance of a strike at this year's meeting with Devious Angel primed for Wednesday's Lily Agnes Stakes and Russellinthebushes looking a lively contender for the Chester British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes on Thursday but Tom could easily have a joker in his pack with one of his older handicap contenders.

Very much in affable mood ahead of the Chester Festival, Tom kindly took the time to speak to Tony Elves about many of his main hopes for the season.

Older Horses
Charlie D
Animal Kingdom
6 b g Animal Kingdom - Ocicat
Winner of eight of his 33 starts and currently rated 88. Finished third, beaten eight and a quarter lengths, to Tynecastle Park at Southwell (2m 2½f) last week off his current mark.
He has been a bony little boy and only cost £1500 and has won over £66,000 in prize money. We love him here and he's almost like a pet. He just needs real firm ground or the All-Weather. He ran over two miles and two at Southwell but didn't really come up to expectations but there will be another day for him.
Lincoln Park
Twilight Pearl
5 b g Kyllachy - Twilight Pearl
Winner of four of his 29 starts and currently rated 84 on the turf and 90 (AW). Having his fourth run for the stable when beating Lord Oberon three lengths at Southwell (6f) in March off a mark of 83.
He came to us and won nicely a few weeks ago at Southwell. He is going to head to the Chester May Festival and we obviously haven't had him that long but he is a good old boy.
Pink Moon
5 b g Zoffany - Pink Moon
Winner of four of his 17 starts and currently rated 91. Returned to winning form at Ripon (2m) in April when beating Notation a head off a mark of 90.
He had a very unlucky time in 2020 in that he didn't manage to win but ran some real good races. He just got his head in front at Ripon the other day and he is in the Chester Cup which he may run in but I think he is possibly more of an oval rather than circular galloping track will suit him better. We will have a think about where he runs next but he's a quality horse.
Brad The Brief
Dutch Art
4 b g Dutch Art - Kenzadargent
Winner of six of his 12 starts and currently rated 107. Was scoring for the third time last season when beating Coeur De Pierre a length and three quarters in a Group 3 at Chantilly (6f) in October.
Brad is absolutely 100 per cent a heavy ground horse. We have been twisted and turned into running him and we were told the ground was yielding to soft in Ireland the other day but when we turned up it was good to firm. He is probably going to have a break in a minute and then bring him back in the autumn. He is a good horse given the right conditions.
He's A Keeper
Silver Grey
Brazen Beau
4 gr g Brazen Beau - Silver Grey
Winner of four of his 15 starts and currently rated 89. Made a winning reappearance at Wolverhampton (1m 4f) in April when beating Harmonious three and a quarter lengths off a mark of 84.
I am thrilled with him and we gave him his name as when I sold him as a yearling I told the owners that he was a horse that would only get better with time. He won really nicely at Wolverhampton the other day on his first start as a four-year-old and he is showing he is very much that he's a keeper. He is going to give us a lot more fun in the next couple of years.
Misty Grey
Chinese White
Dark Angel
4 gr g Dark Angel - Chinese White
Winner of four of his 16 starts and currently rated 104. Form has been revitalised since joining the stable and completed a hat trick in handicap at Wolverhampton when short heading Tranchee over seven furlongs on Boxing Day off a mark of 99. Highly creditable effort when third, beaten half a length, to Exalted Angel in a listed event at Lingfield (6f) in February.
He came to us from Mr Johnston where he had done really well and was slightly regressive. He came to us and won his first three starts and then ran really well at Lingfield in a Listed event. He has had a little niggle and if we just look after him, we can reap the benefits in the next few years.
Three Year Olds
Adaay Dream
3 b c Adaay - Virtuality
Winner of one of his three starts and currently rated 83. Made a winning debut in a novice event at Newcastle (6f) in June of last year when beating High Peak two and a quarter lengths.
He won really nicely at Newcastle first time out then sadly injured himself in the Sales race at York in August. He is on the way back and he has been one of the best patients I have ever had to deal with. His attitude has been perfect and he won't be too long in running. He should make a nice three-year-old.
Andronicus Beau
Bella Ophelia
3 b g Gutaifan - Bella Ophelia
Winner of one of his seven starts and currently rated 81. Finished fourth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Bravado on his reappearance at Lingfield (6f) in January off a mark of 81.
He took a long time to win with and he has had a good break. I look forward to running him shortly.
Dubai Bounty
Oasis Dream
3 b c Oasis Dream - Dubai Bounty
No wins from four starts and currently rated 89. Finished seventh, beaten seven and three quarter lengths, to Diligent Harry in a conditions event at Lingfield (6f) in April.
The owner was very keen to run him in the AW Championships and now we are going to give him the best opportunity we can find to win a race. He wants a straight six or a bend over seven furlongs and he is not well handicapped so maybe we should go for a novice or something. He will be fine.
Critical Path
Bated Breath
3 b g Bated Breath - Critical Path
Winner of one of his six starts and currently rated 75. Off the mark with a two-length victory from Serious Intention off a mark of 70 at Pontefract (1m) in April.
He won at Pontefract the other day having shown us a lot as a two-year-old but not delivering on the track. It looks like he just needed a bit of time and I couldn't have been happier with his win the other day. He could have more in the tank.
First Lott
Don't Tell Mary
Harbour Watch
3 b f Harbour Watch - Don't Tell Mary
Winner of one of her five starts and currently rated 77. Off the mark with a length and a half success from Bella Notte in a nursery at Leicester (6f) in September off a mark of 72.
I was disappointed with her effort at Newbury and I think she might need a little bit of cut in the ground. She is not a superstar but she is going to win races.
Fools Rush In
3 br g Mehmas - Faddwa
Winner of two of his 11 starts and currently rated 79. Scored by half a length from Toussarat off a mark of 77 when last seen out in a handicap at Kempton (7f) in November.
He is another off these three-year-olds we have given a break to and he is on his way back. He is a solid horse, consistent and should be having a few visits to the Racecourse this year.
Harmony Lil
Lil's Joy
Kodi Bear
3 b f Kodi Bear - Lil's Joy
Winner of two of his eight starts and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length to Tees Spirit at Ripon (6f) in April off a mark of 76.
She made a pleasing reappearance at Ripon and I am sure that she is going to give her owners a lot of fun as the season progresses. She probably wants a bit more cut in the ground but she should be effective at six or seven furlongs. She is totally genuine and tries her heart out and that makes my life easy.
Laxton Ladd
Morning Frost
3 gr g Iffraaj - Morning Frost
No wins from eight starts and currently rated 69. Came closest to victory when runner-up, beaten half a length, to Royal Advice at Newcastle (7f) last month off his current mark.
He has always promised to deliver but hasn't but he ran a really nice race when second at Newcastle. He is a better horse than he has shown on the racecourse.
Paws For Thought
Kitty Softpaws
3 b g Requinto - Kitty Softpaws
Winner of two of his seven starts and currently rated 87. Finished fourth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Conservatoire off a mark of 89 in a nursery at Doncaster (7f) last October when last seen out.
He is a lovely little horse by a really undervalued stallion in Requinto. He is as game as a pebble and does everything he can. We are saving him as the owners are local and are desperate for a runner at Chester. He will go to the Chester May Festival and he is fit and ready to go.
Scots Gold
Duchess Andorra
Dark Angel
3 gr g Dark Angel - Duchess Andorra
No wins from five starts and currently rated 67. Finished creditable fourth, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Kalma on his reappearance at Nottingham (1m 2f) in April off his current mark.
He is an interesting horse - I had an argument over him and I think that the handicapper knows more about it than I do and I apologise. I think he will be absolutely fine now but you do get frustrated. All of our horses are trying and they do something like finishing second and going up without running. It drives you nuts.
Solent Gateway
Aoife Alainn
3 b g Awtaad - Aoife Alainn
No wins from seven starts and currently rated 80. Finished runner-up for a third time when beaten a length and a half by Final Voyage at Wolverhampton (1m ½f) on Boxing Day off a mark of 76.
He is a nice horse and we have just been struggling with the trip with him. I think we will see improvement as a three-year-old and in time. Nothing has fallen right for us and we are rated 80.
Two Year Olds
Amor Vincit Omnia
2 b c Caravaggio - Dress Rehearsal
He's ready to run but he doesn't want five furlongs. He is the type of horse we would be preparing to run in the middle of May to give us the option of running two week later if we need it before Royal Ascot. He's doesn't do anything flash but is just a really nice horse and just puts his head down and gets on with it.
Box To Box
2 b c Kodiac - Alyaafel
He's huge and a Kodiac who is probably going to want a big of dig in the ground. He's not far off a run but I can’t run him.
Cei Connah
Areyaam Rose
El Kabeir
2 b c El Kabeir - Areyaam Rose
He probably wants quick ground and is not far from running but, again, he not a five-furlong horse. They have done a lot of cantering and they are fit but there's no point in getting a seven-furlong horse ready when there's only five-furlong races available. We are almost putting on the handbrake as physically and mentally he is ready.
Costa Adeje
Penny Rouge
Cotai Glory
2 b c Cotai Glory - Penny Rouge
No wins from two starts. Finished third, beaten eight and three quarter lengths to Bellarena Lady on his latest start at Leicester (5f) in April.
He wants six or seven furlongs but mentally he's so sharp we ran him at Newmarket where he ran really well and we ran him at Leicester the other day which means when we get a bit of cut over six furlongs he will go out and win. He's come back with a sore shin as I've asked him to do something he can't do. He will spend the next two weeks swimming and he is qualified for any maiden over six and he will win.
Dawn Riser
2 b f Profitable - Up At Dawn
She is going to take a little bit of time and she is only a small filly and doesn't really want this firm ground at the moment.
2 b f Dandy Man - Imelda Mayhem
She is a beautiful filly and just looks fast. As £30k fillies go she is big and may need a little more time. She could be one I would be thinking of a race in May, hopefully win and then look at Queen Mary or Albany for her.
Devious Angel
Angel Meadow
Cotai Glory
2 b f Cotai Glory - Angel Meadow
Winner of one of her two starts. Off the mark at Southwell (5f) in April when scoring by five and a half lengths from Sahara Spear.
She bolted up at Southwell last week and she will be our Lily Agnes representative this week. She is just all speed and we like her.
Ever Given
2 b c Kodi Bear - Lil's Joy
He will be out in the next couple of weeks. He is a full brother to Harmony Lil and he probably wants six but is mentally sharp enough for five to learn his job.
Flaming Rib
2 b c Ribchester - Suddenly
Finished third, beaten five and a quarter lengths, to Khunah at Ripon (5f) in April.
He is one of the colts who I thought was on the button and if we were going to have a first time out two-year-old winner I thought it would be him or So Smart. They were mentally sharp but when they got to the races, they just got stage fright. He ran below expectation but that doesn't mean the expectation isn't still there.
Glittering Choice
Adorable Choice
Havana Gold
2 b f Havana Gold - Adorable Choice
I had the pleasure of training her dam and John Brown and Diane his wife have done a job of breeding horses at a lower level. She is still backward and I wouldn't be sure when you would see her.
He's A Gentleman
Cut No Ice
Dark Angel
2 b c Dark Angel - Cut No Ice
We had the half-brother Frozen Angel and he did really well. I just liked the horse at the Sales and he looks exactly like him. When Frozen Angel won first time out at Newmarket, I just told everybody he would win and he finished last and then I ran him a week later at Ascot in a conditions race and he bolted up. I get the feeling this horse might be quite similar and we are going to run him at Ascot and the reason being that's where his next race will be at Royal Ascot - he is a proper two-year-old.
Lady Caroline
2 gr f Teofilo - Blanc de Chine
She is a really nice filly and Teofilo's tend to want a bit of time so I won't rush her. She is quality.
Lady Valentine
2yo b f No Nay Never - Mais Si
I loved this filly at the Sales and just had to have her. She is enormous and is a work in progress but a lovely, lovely horse.
2 gr c Dark Angel - Plagiarism
He is a cheeky little horse and bit of a playboy but I do like him. He is well named as he is always larking around and he has ability and just needs to grow up. He will definitely need a race to grow up.
2 b c El Kabeir - Lady Marita
He is much more forward than I expected him to have been at this stage and really, he probably wants six furlongs on fast ground now. I am very happy with his progress.
Prince Of Lir
2 b c Prince Of Lir - Conjuring
Finished runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Vaunted on his debut at Bath (5f) in April.
I was very pleased with his first run at Bath and he will be representing us in the maiden at Chester. If he moves forward a little bit for that run then he wouldn't be too far away with a good draw.
Miss Britain
2 b f Dandy Man - Britain's Pride
She is a lovely filly I would have expected to be running by now but she is just not quite there. She will come good very soon and I really like her. She is a really pretty filly and if she was a woman, I would ask her to marry me!
2 b c Australia - Spontaneous
He was a funny horse I bought for £10k and I had £70K-£80k to buy him. As soon as I bought him, I thought what have I missed but the reality is that he was a weak looking pony who in the last six months has developed into a really lovely horse.
Red Power
2 b c Acclamation - Duchess Power
He will be in the second wave of horses to come after the Chester May Festival. We will get through that and then start to enter them up. He's a lovely horse.
2 b c Requinto - Mattinata
He is another in the mold of Red Power and Sir Lelo and will be ready to run after Chester. He is fit and ready to run but I've just backed off him a bit and wait until we get through the five-furlong early two-year-old races and then all these other horses who are probably not out and out sprinters will be ready to go.
Princess Banu
Bungle Inthejungle
2 ch f Bungle Inthejungle - Princess Banu
Finished runner-up, beaten a head, to Instinction at Redcar (5f) in April.
She is a lovely filly and out of all our horses in the yard she probably ran the best first time out. If she gets any reasonable draw in the maiden at Chester she will win. As long as she's fine eight days later she will be in the Marygate at York.
Sam Maximus
2 b c Showcasing - Daring Day
Sam Maximus has had just little issues, nothing serious at all and he will be fit to run very soon. He is a Showcasing colt who wants five or six furlongs but is quite a big lad. Whether he wins his maiden in May, June, July or August it doesn't really matter as he has shown the ability to win. All we have to do is give him whatever time he needs and put him in the right race.
Sir Lelo
2 b c Dark Angel - Swiss Dream
He is the same as Red Power and we will start and enter him up after Chester. He is another a like a lot and look forward to getting started.
2 b c Starspangledbanner - Jaquino
He was just gorgeous but I may have just pushed him too hard to be a five-furlong two-year-old. He is a big horse and he is cantering and not working but we do really like that two-year-old.
Taa Laa
Kirrin Island
2 b f Heeraat - Kirrin Island
No wins from two starts. Finished third, beaten five and a half lengths, to Vintage Clarets at Ayr (5f) last week.
She ran clueless at Wolverhampton and then at Ayr where she finished third. The only reason for running her was to try and win if we could but to get a place and when there's rain and six and seven furlong races around, she will be the first one in the race now she's placed, won't be balloted out, and we can choose the race we want to run in. She is very genuine and she should be winning her next start.
Fancied to build on a winning return at Pontefract and steps up in trip today at Bath, May 3rd.
Devious Angel
Showed plenty of dash when hacking up at Southwell and could improve on that effort at Chester.
He's A Gentleman
Has been giving Dascombe all the right signals at home and his debut could be worth waiting for.
He's A Keeper
Very much living up to his name and one to keep on the right side of.
Has developed into an impressive physical specimen since joining the yard and this son of Australia could well make his mark when unleashed.
Narrowly beaten on her debut at Redcar and could go one better this week.
