Frederic Rossi Stable Tour
29 Apr 2021

Frederic Rossi enjoyed the best season of his career in 2020 when he celebrated not only his first Classic victory with Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Dream And Do, but also enjoyed a memorable Arc weekend when Sealiway literally ran away with the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and Alkuin only just missed out on adding the Prix du Cadran to his growing record.

“Yes, it was a brilliant season,” confirms Frederic Rossi, who is based at the training centre of Calas, not far from Marseille. “And in many ways, it was due to Covid. I firmly believe that the Classic races arrive far too early in the calendar and last year, when we went into lockdown, we could finally give our horses that extra bit of time that they need when they come out of the winter. “Not having to run your two-year-olds and three-year-olds in March has a definite advantage.”

This year the French Guineas are run at their usual time in May and Sealiway is very much on course for another success. Here, his trainer kindly tells Liz Price of attheraces.com about his hopes for his three-year-olds and older horses in 2021.

Runner-up in the Gr 1 Prix du Cadran last year, he was the runner-up to the Francis-Henri Graffard trained Big Five in the 1m7f Listed Prix Right Royal on his second start this season.
He runs this Sunday in the Prix de Barbeville. His main target this year is obviously the Prix du Cadran. He likes heavy ground and loves Longchamp. That’s his garden. I will try and keep him ticking over this season. He runs now and then he will probably have a long break, come back in Deauville and then go to the Prix du Cadran.

He is a good horse. He ran well for me last time out and I will now run him in in the Prix du Gros Chene or in the Prix de St Georges. He was trained by Andrea Marcialis and ran in the Prix de l’Abbaye. He is a horse to follow over the shorter trips.

Has been running in Class 2 handicaps over 1 ½ m and after winning at Saint-Cloud, he was the runner-up on his last start in a similar race at Lyon.
He is an older horse who should win his listed race before the end of the year. Last time out he ran well when he was second behind a very good horse. He will probably run in the Grand Prix de Lyon.

Has tried to compete at the highest level with the best milers last year. Has already run four times this season and was last seen winning a nine-furlong Listed at ParisLongchamp giving weight away.
He is a great horse, he is just such a consistent performer, which is rather unusual at that level. There is a Group 2 race in Rome that he could run in, but we haven’t made any definite plans for him. He is also a horse that could go to America. He needs good ground. I do have the suspicion that he runs better right-handed than left-handed, as all his good performances were right-handed, but I would still give it a try. But he is definitely a horse that will win again.

Only joined the yard in November and after a long break produced a good run to finish second behind stable companion Kenway in the 9f Listed Prix Jacques Laffitte.
This is a great horse. He is a very good horse and will win a very good race this year. He is improving all the time. He will run in a Listed and then a Group race. He is also a horse that could run in America or in a handicap at Royal Ascot, but we shall see. I really like this horse.

Runner-up on his first start for his new trainer behind promising Aga Khan owned unbeaten classic hope Saiydabad.
Unfortunately, he got knocked and so he can’t run this weekend. It is not the ideal preparation for the Grand Prix de Paris, but that’s life. The horse that beat him by the way is Rouget’s horse for the Prix du Jockey Club. I was going to run Areen in a Class 2 race and then go straight to the Grand Prix de Paris, but as I said, we shall see now where he runs next. In any case, he is a good colt.

I think he is my best three-year-old. Unfortunately, he is a gelding. Well, I say unfortunately, but fact is he wouldn’t be the horse he is if he hadn’t been gelded. He will run in the Prix Hocquart and seeing that he is a gelding we will travel with him. But for me, he is the standout colt in the yard. He is very easy to train, he is magnificent, he does everything so easy.

Still a maiden who finished fourth on her first start for Rossi over 9 furlongs at Marseille.
She has a funny name, hasn’t she? She ran well the other day when she ran for the first time for me. I will run her over further next time and I could see her winning a handicap.

After winning on her seasonal reappearance in a 6f race at Toulouse, she was not far beaten when third in the 7 f Group 3 Prix Imprudence.
She is a good filly over six furlongs. She was beaten in the Prix Imprudence and won’t run in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. She will run in the Prix Texanita, which is a Group 3 race over six furlongs. She should run well.

Winner on her debut of a conditions race over nine furlongs at Marseille Borely, but then finished fifth when stretched to 10 furlongs.
She won well on her debut and then she disappointed me a bit in the Class 2 race the other day. Maybe the trip was too long for her. I don’t think she is a champion, but she should be able to get some black type this season.

Last year’s Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner who made a pleasing seasonal reappearance in the Gr 3 Prix de Fontainebleau where he was the runner-up to Policy Of Truth.
He enjoyed a big season last year and I’m sure he will enjoy another big one this year. For me, his seasonal reappearance was satisfying. I think the horse that beat him was just that little bit fitter. Anyway, that’s what I’m hoping. I hope that there is still lots of improvement. He hasn’t changed much physically but mentally he is in top form. His jockey Christophe Soumillon in any case is confident enough that he thinks we will beat him in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains. His target after that will be the Prix du Jockey Club. I actually believe that the further the distance the better for him.

A winner over the mile at two, he won a Class 1 race over 1 ¼ m at Marseille on his last start.
He won nicely the other day and should win a Listed race soon. I will run him over further now in the Group 3 Prix du Lys and then we shall see. I haven’t ruled out a start in the Grand Prix de Paris, but that is still a while off. Unfortunately, he needs soft ground, so if the ground is good, he won’t run.

Won his maiden on his fifth attempt and won a Class 2 race on his last start over 1 ¼ m at Fontainebleau where, as the only colt in a conditions race, he gave away three kilos.
He is great. He is going to run in the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe even though he has just run. I’m doing it the English way, run my horse twice in seven days. As I have a satellite yard in Chantilly, I kept him there and that allows me to run him again. He is a tough horse, who is just coming into his own. His dam is a champion and while it is maybe a bit of a dare to run him in the Group 2, I think he deserves his chance.

Has been very consistent over the mile but disappointed in a handicap at Chantilly on his last start.
I was very disappointed with his last start and still don’t know what happened. He is a horse that must surely be able to win his Quinte. He ran well in a Class 2 at Saint-Cloud and so I couldn’t understand what happened last time out. But I still think he will win his handicap.
