Hugo Palmer Stable Tour
29 Apr 2021

HUGO PALMER has notched a respectable ten winners from only 51 runners so far this year but as the turf season gets into full swing, you can expect the Kremlin Cottage Stable trainer's name to continue among the winners.

Palmer has plenty of potential in his team this time around with the three-year-old fillies looking a particularly interesting bunch and the likes of Chocoya, Liberated Lady, Lovely Breeze, Ocean Road and Quenelle D'or all looking types that could well make inroads into the black type division.

The three-year-old colts also look a nice bunch with The Rosstafarian, Set Point, Irish Legend and Golden Pass looking set for successful seasons too.

Power Of States has already made his contribution but could have more to come on his return from a break and Caravan Of Hope could well bid for a second success in the Northumberland Plate.

The two-year-olds are just starting to come into full flow and it looks like another highly productive season for Palmer and his team.

Hugo kindly spoke to Tony Elves for attheraces.com about those he will be looking to carry his fortunes forward in the coming months.

5 b g Nathaniel - Caravan of Dreams
Winner of three of his nine starts and currently rated 98. Last seen out when beating Australis, a length and a half in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m ½f) in June off a mark of 89.
He needs cut in the ground or the All-Weather and we kept him for the Ebor after he won the Northumberland Plate last year and he missed the cut for the Ebor. He was ready to run again at the backend and he knocked himself. That took a little time to get over but he's back cantering and he looks like he has done well from four to five. Hopefully, we will be able to get him back for the Northumberland Plate and that is likely to be his first run. We want to get him back for the big Staying handicaps this season.

Winner of six of his 21 starts and currently rated 101. Finished fourth, beaten three lengths, to Forest Of Dean in the Group 3 Winter Derby at Lingfield (1m 2f) in February.
Power Of States had a very busy winter and did very well for us and when we discovered after two goes that Lingfield was his cup of tea we thought we would take stock and let him freshen up. He has had a bit of time in the field but is back cantering now and he hasn't shown much form to date on the turf but I have a feeling that's because his trainer has been running him over the wrong trip. We have been running him over a mile and a half on turf. The plan is to bring him back and a stiff track and a mile in the Royal Hunt Cup might be ideal for him.

Winner of three of his 11 starts and currently rated 87. Gained his last win at Chelmsford (1m 2f) last August when beating Big Country half a length off his current mark.
He won a couple of times last year and at the backend he didn't run so well. We gave him a bit of a break and he has come back looking in good shape. Hopefully, he can do well this year - he's back to a winning mark and there should be races to be won with him.

4 b g Night Of Thunder - Blameless
Winner of two of his seven starts and currently rated 92. Finished runner-up, beaten a neck, to Artistic Rifles in the Spring Mile on his reappearance at Doncaster in March off a mark of 86.
It was frustrating to get touched off in the Spring Mile at Doncaster but after two very disappointing efforts last Summer it was good to have the horse back on track. He definitely needs a bit of cut in the ground and probably not any softer than genuine good ground but as we know, apart from Sandown, there hasn't been anything close to good ground in April. He will probably get an entry for the Thirsk Hunt Cup but I would think he is likely to be staying in his box unless the forecast changes. It is a long year and he could be the sort of horse that could run a big race in the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot on Champions Day.

Winner of two of his 11 starts and currently rated 76. Finished fourth, beaten eight and a half lengths, to Mr Coco Bean at Haydock (1m 2½f) on Saturday.
Things didn't go right for him at Haydock on Saturday. He walked out the stalls but I think there is scope for him to win races on grass. He did well on the All-Weather during the winter and we would like to get him winning on turf.

4 b f Golden Horn - Lovely Pass
Winner of three of her five starts and currently rated 92. Scored by three quarters of a length from Throne Hall in a handicap at Ripon (1m 4f) on her reappearance in April off a mark of 88.
I was delighted with her comeback at Ripon and she has a beautiful pedigree and she has real breeding potential for her owner/breeder. She is a lovely filly and we found last year we had to space her races a lot. She tries really hard and that leaves its mark a little bit we haven't actually had her ridden since she won and we will get her going again probably next week. Obviously black type is going to be important for her and races like the Aphrodite or the Chalice at the July course or the Lyric Stakes at York would come under consideration. If she won one of those then we could think of something like the Lily Langtry or the Park Hill but that would be Stage 2 and Stage 1 would be to try and get some black type.

Winner of two of her nine starts and currently rated 87. Gained her last success at Chelmsford (1m 5 ½f) this month when beating Galahad Threepwood a length and a quarter off a mark of 82.
She found the ground too quick at Doncaster at the weekend and she was also heavily in season having been covered the night before. She has been covered again and hopefully will be in foal this time and that can often improve them a little bit. She stays very well and is very genuine. She wouldn't want the ground as firm as it was the other night and she could easily develop into a black type filly over a staying trip.

Winner of one of his nine starts and currently rated 77. Off the mark with a five-length victory from Lopes Dancer on his reappearance at Newcastle (1m 4½f) in January off a mark of 65.
He is a tricky horse in that things need to go right for him. When he's relaxed and they do go right form him he has lots of talent. He got a bit crowded at Doncaster and we think on turf we might come back to ten furlongs. There's no reason he shouldn't go and win on top of the ground.

He was very disappointing last week as he had been working very well and I thought he would win. He seems a little bit quiet since and the ground was a bit firm for him. I think he may not quite have been on his "A" game. We will regroup with him and I think he should make his presence felt over six or seven furlongs later in the season.

Winner of two of her eight starts and currently rated 96. Finished fourth, beaten four lengths, to Sacred in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket (7f) in April.
She has had two good runs this year finishing second in a Listed race in France and then she ran very well in the Nell Gwyn. I think she stayed the seven furlongs in the Nell Gwyn; she was just beaten by three better fillies. She will run this week at Chelmsford in a six-furlong Listed fillies race and I think she will go very well again. I would imagine she would be among the more fancied runners in the field and we will go from there.

No wins from two starts. Finished third, beaten two lengths, to Onesmoothoperator in a novice at Newcastle (1m 2f) in March.
Countessa has been really unlucky. Her second run was frozen off at Chelmsford and her third run the starter let the field go before she was in the stalls which was pretty annoying. Her fourth time at the racecourse she got struck into behind and we are due to ride her again at the end of the week. She's just been lunging for the last ten days and she has grown and filled out. It's quite frustrating that here we are here in May and a filly who should have had three runs and won a handicap by now has only had two runs. She was progressing and I am sure will win races.

She has to be the biggest horse I have trained and it's staggering that she managed to win at two albeit it on New Year's Eve and only ten hours before she turned three. She ran well up in trip on her third start and we were determined to get that run into her so that she has a handicap mark. We gave her a break after that but I think she is going to be a progressive staying filly. She is not galloping yet but we should see her towards the end of the May. Looking at her I would be surprised if she didn't want a bit of cut in the ground.

Winner of two of his three starts and currently rated 88. Disappointing reappearance in the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown (1m 2f) last Friday when last of ten, beaten 27 lengths, to Alenquer.
He is a horse we like a lot and he won both his starts at two and did very well over the winter. He was very disappointing at Sandown on Friday but scoped dirty in the stables afterwards. Hopefully we can put a line through that and it's difficult where to go with him next but we will plot our way and see how we go.

We liked her a lot and she did very well last year and was just below her best in the Fred Darling. I am sure she will be up to black type form later in the season. We had a look early to see if she was a Classic filly but that's not what she is and we will regroup and take a more sedate pace. If she comes right in the next couple of months she could be a Sandringham filly.

She has done very well over the winter and we are very happy with her work. He ran a very good race at Windsor on Monday where the winner had the run of the race. He didn't do a lot before that run and I am sure he will win more races. He can win over a mile and a quarter and I think he will stay a mile and a half as well. He could well be a King George V Handicap horse.

Winner of one of her three starts and currently rated 80. Off the mark with a two-length success from Moselle Valley on her reappearance in a maiden at Kempton (1m 3f) this month.
Quenelle D'Or did very well to win her maiden the other day. She stays very well and the next step with her is to try and get some black type. She could very well go to Chester or Lingfield next week and we will see where we get to from there. There is a lot of black type around for three-year-old fillies at this time of year and I think she is up to that. If she was to win one then we could think about Epsom but that's a big step up.

Winner of one of his three starts and currently rated 87. Finished fifth, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Hurricane Lane in a conditions event at Newbury (1m 2f) this month.
Set Point ran well at Newbury but the ground was a bit quick and I think he is looking for a mile and a half. He may well go to Chester next week a mile and a half handicap for three-year-olds there. He could be a King George V Handicap horse.

Winner of one of his eight starts and currently rated 80. Finished fifth, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to A Boy Named Ivy in a handicap at Redcar (1m) this month off a mark of 81.
He is a typical tough little Kodiac and he has had a run, and I think will improve for it. I am sure there are races to be won with him through the season and I think he's perfectly handicapped at about 80. He probably doesn't have enough in hand to suggest he is going to be winning these early season three-year-old handicaps.

Winner of one of his three starts and currently rated 97. Finished fifth, beaten six and a quarter lengths, to Master Of The Seas in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket (1m) on his reappearance this month.
He met all sorts of trouble in running in the Craven and was a big eyecatcher. Mentally, he is still an immature horse and will get there in time. I think at this stage he is a Britannia horse and I think he needs to run again so that he can take in a race like the Britannia. I would expect he will run again towards the middle to the end of next month. We will probably go for a handicap and then wait for Ascot with him. We can go from there but there are races like the Sir Henry Cecil at Newmarket, the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury or the Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood.

He ran very well at Windsor and I would expect him to go very close next time. Dig Two just sat back when the gates opened and missed the break and was very green at Windsor.

The Dubawi brother to Ahlawi and Golden Pass has been working nicely and he could well be a six-furlong horse to start the year. He has been showing plenty of speed.

He ran well at Newmarket and finished hard held after meeting trouble in running. He should soon be winning.

He is a half-brother to Summerghand and has been showing plenty of speed. I think we have a good bunch of two-year-olds but most of them are second half of the season type horses.
