Godolphin in France Stable Tour
22 Apr 2021

In 2020, for the third consecutive year, thanks to the likes of Classic winner Victor Ludorum, Prix d’Ispahan victor Persian King and the very consistent Earthlight, Godolphin was crowned Champion Owner in France, a feat that the boys in blue are hoping to repeat again in 2021.

The now four-year-old Victor Ludorum will once again be flying the flag for Godolphin and could have his first start in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet in two weeks’ time.

“We are very excited to have Victor Ludorum,” Lisa-Jane Graffard, Godolphin’s racing manager in France said. “I think he didn’t get the credit that he deserved for his win in the French Guineas last year and I think he is a horse with a very good turn of foot.

“If he retains the ability he showed at two and three and he appreciates the step back to a mile as we feel he will, then he will be an exciting horse to follow for the rest of the year.”

The 1st of May might be Victor Ludorum’s starting point, but May is obviously also the month of the first Classics and Godolphin could be well represented in the Poule d’Essai des Poulins with Parchemin and maybe even Pimento, while Philomene could prepare her Prix de Diane bid with a start in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.

Here Lisa-Jane Graffard, kindly tells Liz Price of about this year’s main hopes.

Older Horses
New Approach
6 che g New Approach - Violante
Very lightly raced, principally over the mile. A Group 3 winner two years ago, could make no impression on his seasonal reappearance in a Listed at Saint-Cloud.
He is a bit of an enigma to us. We have been a bit disappointed with him. He has ability, but mentally he is a bit delicate. We would like him to get his confidence back.
Magny Cours
Indy Five Hundred
Medaglia d'Oro
6 bay g Medaglia d'Oro - Indy Five Hundred
Very lightly raced, he produced a brilliant performance when finishing third in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup.
He ran so well in Dubai and we are so proud of him. He is such a brave horse, and he is also very, very lightly raced. It’s no secret to say that he is quite a fragile horse. His run in Dubai really showed his ability and his courage. We were so thrilled with him and when he got down, William Buick said that André should consider bringing him back next year. We try not to think too far into the future with Magny Cours. The main thing is that he is well and happy and that he came back sound from Dubai. Hopefully he will get a chance again to run at Group 1 level again in France and if he remains sound, then there is no reason why he couldn’t go back next year. He has an entry in the Prix Ganay, but we will go day by day and he certainly won’t be pushed. He is in good form at the moment, which is all the more pleasing, considering he could have had a hard time travelling to Dubai and running such a big race, but he appears to be very happy in himself.
Be Fabulous
5 bay g Shamardal - Be Fabulous
Unbeaten this season in two starts, including a 1 ½ m Listed at ParisLongchamp.
He improved again from four to five. He is a very straight forward horse who has now won two races on the bounce, which is great as his confidence last year took a bit of a hit in the Prix du Cadran. He quickly decided that it wasn’t a race for him, which was wise as it seems to have been a race that left its mark on a lot of runners. He came back tired, despite the fact he downed tools early! He has done really well over the winter, mentally and physically. He is improving and there are plenty of options from ten furlongs onwards. It’s not impossible that he could return to the longer distances, but he shows a good turn of foot over the shorter trips and so he has many options.
4 che c Shamardal - Antara
Won a 1 ½ m Listed at Saint-Cloud on his last start in 2020 and tailed in last in the Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt on his seasonal reappearance.
Algiers is a horse that was very progressive last year. He is a big, heavy horse, who probably will need a couple of races to really get wound up for fitness. He was obviously disappointing in the Prix d’Harcourt, but so far nothing sinister has come to light and maybe a drop in class before being brought along in the same progressive manner again like last year is the way forward. He definitely has the physical scope, and we believe he has the ability to be a good horse, but he probably just needs some time. 1 ½ m looks like being his trip.
Be Fabulous
4 che f Shamardal - Be Fabulous
Never ran until this year when she won a Class 3 race over 1m5f at Fontainebleau.
She is a sister to Sublimis. She won at Fontainebleau and she has been handled very patiently by her trainer and we hope that she can pay back that patience. Now that she has been given the time that she needed, she is a straightforward filly with a good temperament, good attitude and she is also good-looking. We hope that she can add to her family’s black type record.
Nemean Lion
Golden Horn
4 bay c Golden Horn - Ninfea
A winner of a 1 ½ m handicap, he was the runner-up in the Group 2 Prix Chaudenay over 1m7f.
He has had a minor setback and we are in no rush with him. He will have a programme of staying races in the second half of the year.
Victor Ludorum
4 bay c Shamardal - Antiquities
Won the French 2,000 Guineas last year and was last seen finishing fifth behind stable companion Persian King in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.
Victor Ludorum is in good form. He did really well for his break in Newmarket. The goal is really to get another top-level win into him this year. He’ll probably stay over a mile and with this in mind he could start in the Prix du Muguet. It could come a bit soon for him, but if Andre feels he is well, he could run and that could be a steppingstone to the rest of the season. We will take one race at the time, but the long-term aim is to get him to the summer Group 1 races over a mile.
Three Year Olds
Ages Of Man
New Approach
3 che c New Approach - Antiquities
Full brother to Victor Ludorum. Fourth on debut at Cholet on Wednesday,
Expectations are very different to his brother, as he is still unraced. He finished fourth at Cholet racecourse on the 21st of April, but whilst he is entered in a few Group 1 races, he isn’t going to run in them. Hopefully, we will be able to learn a bit more about him after Cholet, but obviously, he hasn’t shown the same speed and precocity as his brother.
Autumn Lily
Golden Horn
3 bay c Golden Horn - Autumn Lily
Runner-up behind the Mark Johnston trained Gear Up in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on his last start in 2020.
He has had a minor setback. He is a nice horse with hopefully decent prospects over middle distances, but probably more towards the back end of the season. It’s unlikely that he will get to the Prix du Jockey Club in time, but hopefully he can come out in June, with maybe the Grand Prix de Paris as a target. We definitely think that he is a nice horse. He has a good attitude and hopefully he can go forward now with no more setbacks.
Sant Elena
Oasis Dream
3 bay c Oasis Dream - Sant Elena
Winner of a 7f listed last season, he made a promising seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Prix La Force over 9 furlongs.
We were absolutely delighted with his run in the Prix La Force, but we learnt that he probably needs to be dropped back to seven or eight furlongs. So he’ll probably follow a programme along these lines. We haven’t mentioned the Poule d’Essai for him, he might go for a seven-furlong race next, as there are plenty of options over this trip in May and June.
Ideal Beauty
Invincible Spirit
3 bay f Invincible Spirit - Discernable
Has run three times already this season over 5 ½ twice and 6 furlongs and was twice the runner-up, including in a Listed at Chantilly.
She is a very straight forward filly with plenty of speed and the minimum trip suits her. Should opportunities allow, she has the potential to be competitive in Listed/Group races against her own age.
Sea The Moon
3 che c Sea The Moon - Maricel
Won his maiden on his second start last year on the all-weather at Chantilly.
Mond is another horse with an interesting profile and another one we considered a horse with ambitions for this season, but he missed a couple of days training in early April and while this doesn’t change much as he was pretty fit, it just means that his seasonal debut will be pushed back to early May. He is a quality horse, and we hope he can be a Stakes performer over ten to twelve furlongs.
Hint Of Pink
Lope De Vega
3 che c Lope De Vega - Hint Of Pink
A listed winner last season, he was the well beaten favourite on his seasonal reappearance in the Prix de Fontainebleau.
Andre Fabre wasn’t completely dissatisfied with his last race. He possibly had a few excuses. It was a trial race after all. He has come out of the race in good form and all going well, he will line up in the French Guineas. Andre has a slight suspicion that he might be better on softer ground but equally we know that he’ll face other proven soft-ground performers at Longchamp in May.
3 bay f Dubawi - Prudenzia
Unbeaten in two starts, she lifted the Group 3 Prix Penelope in great style.
She is such a beautiful filly who has bags of class and she was ear-marked by her trainer as a potential Prix de Diane filly very early on. Andre said that he would like to run her in the French Guineas en route to the Diane, which is not an illogical route to take. He quite often does that with his better horses to use the Guineas as a trial for the Prix du Jockey Club or the Prix de Diane. She is obviously very lightly raced and very inexperienced, but she does have lots of class. Andre feels she could be anything.
Chili Dip
3 bay c Iffraaj - Chili Dip
A winner on the all-weather, he was only just beaten in the Group 3 Prix Djebel over seven furlongs.
He is great, very straight forward. He has improved every race he has run. At the moment it is not inconceivable that he will run in the French Guineas, but a decision hasn’t been made yet. He could be more of a horse for the Prix Jean Prat later in the season.
Star Garland
Blue Bunting
Sea The Stars
3 bay f Sea The Stars - Blue Bunting
Just beaten a nose by the Pascal Bary trained Serpent’s Tooth on her debut over 9 furlongs in a conditions race in April.
She finished second first time out and our first reaction was that we were a little disappointed that she got beaten, because we think quite a bit of her. But it does look like quite a decent race and she was beaten by another good filly who is held in very high regards. We think she could be a stakes filly over the middle distance, over ten or twelve furlongs.
Urgent Appeal
3 che c Showcasing - Zayanida
Has won his last three starts on the all-weather and was last seen lifting a Listed over 6 ½ f at Chantilly.
He is a lovely horse, very straight forward with a great temperament. He has a fantastic attitude. He was a bit under the weather for a couple of days last week so unfortunately, he is not running in the Group race at Chantilly this week. He has plenty of speed and hopefully, he will come back to run in the Prix Texanita at Chantilly in May.
Victorian Beauty
New Approach
3 che g New Approach - Victorian Beauty
Has run three times already this season. Following a success over 9 ½ f on the all-weather at Chantilly, he was then placed fifth in a Listed over 9 furlongs, again on the all-weather at Chantilly.
He improved from two to three, both mentally and physically. He was quite a difficult horse last year, which is why he was gelded. And that has been the making of him. There were only eleven days between his win at Chantilly and the listed race. It just took a bit out of him, but Andre believes that he will be a stakes horse later in the year.
Unexposed colt who can make his mark in 1 ½ m races.
Classy filly who could climb all the way to the top.
Star Garland
Sure to improve from that first run, she is one to follow over the middle distance.
In the form of his life, his winning streak looks far from over and even a step back up in distance might work out for him.
Victor Ludorum
Class horse who could surprise now that he will be dropped back in trip.
