Henry de Bromhead Stable Tour
21 Apr 2021

Henry de Bromhead has held a trainer’s license for just over 20 years and has steadily grown into one of the leading National Hunt trainers in Ireland.

The last five seasons in particular have seen him accelerate his progress up the ranks, with him consistently raising his personal bar with regard to winners and prize money. Those performances have seen him emerge from the pack as a serious pursuer of Willie Mullins and there is no sign of his progress levelling out.

All of Henry’s work culminated with the most incredible Cheltenham Festival in 2021, with him becoming the first trainer in history to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup at the same meeting.

If that wasn’t enough, he saddled a 1-2 in the Gold Cup, with Minella Indo beating A Plus Tard. Not only that, the dream continued just a few weeks later at Aintree with him saddling a truly remarkable 1-2 in the Grand National with Minella Times leading home Balko Des Flos.

With the unbeaten Honeysuckle as his stable star and a strong supporting cast of Grade 1 horses such as Bob Olinger, Minella Indo, Envoi Allen and Quilixios, de Bromhead looks to have a fine team of horses for the upcoming Punchestown Festival.

He sat down with Kevin Blake of attheraces.com to go through his squad.

A 175-rated chaser, he has won four of his eight starts over fences and most recently won the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.
He’s in great order. He’s so laid back that when we backed off him for a few days after the Gold Cup, he started getting chubby straight away, so we weren’t too long getting back to work with him. He was on the beach this morning and he loved that. Our intention is to run him in the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup. The one concern we’d have is that he has been quite busy this season. It had been our intention to keep him busier this season, but it’s natural to be slightly worried when you get to the end of such a campaign. In fairness to him though, he is giving all the right signs and seems in great form. Jack Kennedy will ride him if he’s available.

A 162-rated chaser, he has won five of his 10 starts over fences including two Grade 1 contests last season.
He disappointed us at Aintree and subsequently scoped poorly, so he has gone home for his summer holidays and won’t be running at the Punchestown Festival.

A 164-rated chaser, he is unbeaten in a point-to-point, four starts in bumpers, four starts over hurdles and three completed starts over fences. He fell at the fourth fence when a short-price favourite for the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
The plan is to run him in the Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase on the Tuesday. He worked really well at the Curragh the other day and we are very happy with him. It was obviously unfortunate what happened at Cheltenham, it was just a novicey mistake, but he was fine after it. We’ve got to know him better since Cheltenham and he seems much more settled now. He schooled really well last week, and he seems in great order. It hasn’t been confirmed who will ride him yet.

A 165-rated hurdler, she has won all 11 of her starts over hurdles including seven Grade 1 contests. Her most recent win was in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
She seems in really good form since Cheltenham. We didn’t run her again after Cheltenham last year, but she seems really well, and we are really excited about seeing her in the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival. It was at the Punchestown Festival Sale that we bought her three years ago, so it would be brilliant to go back there with her and win the Punchestown Champion Hurdle.

A 158-rated hurdler, he won a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Naas last year and the Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Fairyhouse in February.
He seems in mighty form and could well run in the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle at Punchestown. What happened at Aintree was a bit frustrating, but it’s all part of the game. He came back safe and sound, so we couldn’t complain too much.

A 142-rated hurdler, she has won three of her seven starts over hurdles including a Grade 3 mares’ novice hurdle at Fairyhouse last year.
She’s been a bit disappointing in her last couple of runs, but she seems in particularly good form now and we’ll probably let her take her chance at Punchestown. She has a couple of entries and we might well try to keep herself and Telmesomethinggirl apart.

She’s savage! For her to do what she did in the Queen Mother Champion Chase was just unbelievable. She is entered in the William Hill Champion Chase at Punchestown, but the plan is to run in the Celebration Chase at Sandown on Saturday instead. She obviously seems to have a real liking for Cheltenham, so it will be interesting to see how she performs around Sandown. She seems in great form.

He’s pretty impressive! He was brilliant at Cheltenham and came back from there in great form. The intention is to run him in the Alanna Homes Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown. We always get a bit nervous coming towards the end of a long season with all our horses, but he was on the beach this morning and seems really well, so hopefully we’ll see more of the same from him at Punchestown.

A 153-rated chaser, he won a maiden chase at Punchestown in December and most recently finished third in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival.
He’s in mighty form. He won a beginner’s chase at Punchestown and we are looking forward to getting him back there for the Ryanair Novice Chase. He was just too keen at Cheltenham and I don’t think we saw the best of him. Himself and Allmankind just went too quick and it was probably my fault as I had said to Rachael that if we committed to leading from the outset, I didn’t think anyone would take us on, but Allmankind did and that didn’t help either of them. He’s better than he showed there.

He’s in mighty form and looks really well. He ran great in the Champion Hurdle and was a bit let down by his jumping at the second-last hurdle. He galloped all the way to the line and is a hardy customer. He’ll run in the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle at Punchestown.

He was very good at Cheltenham and looks amazing at the minute. We are really happy with him. He has a high cruising speed and jumps well. The plan is to run in the Ballymore Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle at Punchestown. He weighs over 500kg and looking at his technique over a hurdle, you’d be very hopeful that he’ll be good over a fence in time. He’s very exciting for the future.
