Andrew Balding Stable Tour
17 Apr 2021

ANDREW BALDING, once again, has a squad of horses that would be the envy of most trainers and the Kingclere-based handler will be short odds to top the £2 million in prize money barrier for a fifth season in succession; with 25 winners and £322,955 in the bag already.

Last year, Balding ended his campaign with 106 winners and £2,107,156 in the bank and victory for Alcohol Free in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket had him dreaming of another Classic victory this season.

Alcohol Free takes her chance in the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Fred Darling Stakes) at Newbury on Sunday afternoon as connections look towards the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 2 and the week has already proved successful as Balding provided Her Majesty, The Queen with a poignant success at Newmarket earlier in the week when landing the Listed Free Handicap.

Bangkok has been a major money spinner once more with £72,136 in the coffers already and rising staying prospect Ranch Hand weighing in with £50,946 and we have yet to get to the end of April.

All in all, there look to be plenty of lucrative days ahead for Balding and his team and he kindly spoke to Tony Elves for attheraces.com about those he hopes can improve for what is an improving trainer.

8 gr g Kendargent - Moranda
Winner of seven of his 25 starts and currently rated 109. Best effort last season when runner-up, beaten a length, to Alignak in a listed event at Chester (1m 4 ½f) in September.
Morando was entered in the John Porter but we need it to rain and we bypassed that contest. We will look at the Ormonde Stakes and the Yorkshire Cup. He is eight-years-old now and he is what he is but he still has a lot of enthusiasm and there is still a nice race in him.

Winner of four of his 20 starts and currently rated 108. Best effort last season when runner-up, beaten two and a half lengths, to Fanny Logan in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot (1m 4f) in June.
He has been gelded through the Winter and I am really pleased with him. He is not quite ready to run yet but he I'm pleased with the way he is working and the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at the Royal meeting would be his main aim.

5 b h Australia - Tanaghum
Winner of five of his 20 starts and currently rated 111. Landed the Easter Classic at Lingfield (1m 2f) in April by a neck from Palavecino on his latest start.
Bangkok has had a busy winter and done exceptionally well and earned a lot of prize money which is great. He is thriving on it at the moment and he will need a break at some stage but as long as the ground is fast, we will be heading to the Huxley Stakes at Chester.

Winner of two of his nine starts and currently rated 103. Scored by a neck from Ouzo on his reappearance at Newmarket (1m) in June off a mark of 98.
He's had a good winter holiday and is still a little behind in his coat but he will probably be going for the nine-furlong handicap at the Guineas meeting at Newmarket.

Winner of two of his nine starts and currently rated 112. Runner-up, beaten a length and a half to Aspetar in the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes at York (1m 2½f) in July and also runner-up, beaten a length, to Extra Elusive in the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor (1m 2f) in August.
He will be looking for a later start in the season. He had an injury after Ayr last year which was probably the only poor performance of his whole career and that was explained when he came back with an injury. He should be a high-class horse from mid-Summer onwards particularly with some give in the ground.

Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently rated 104. Best effort last season when fifth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Extra Elusive in a Group 3 at Haydock (1m 2f) in August.
Fox Tal is a bit of an enigma - he has his own ideas on racing. When he is right, he is very decent and we would be looking towards the Wolferton at Royal Ascot.

Winner of three of his 18 starts and currently rated 86. Came closest to victory last season when finishing third, beaten a length and a half, to Omnivega at Kempton (1m 3f) in September off a mark of 90.
He is a useful older handicapper over a mile and a quarter. He is in good shape and has a few entries coming up. I think he is on the right side of the handicapper and should win nice races.

5 gr h Dark Angel - Tamarisk
Winner of seven of his 19 starts and currently rated 115. Scored by a length and a half from Pogo when winning the Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket (7f) in October.
Happy Power is a tough horse to place obviously carrying a Group 2 penalty from last year for the first half of the season. Seven furlongs is his ideal trip but there are very few options for him at seven so we will probably go to Sandown over a mile and then the Lockinge at Newbury and we will take stock after that.

Winner of seven of his 16 starts and currently rated 106. Has won both of his starts on the All-Weather this year and confirmed earlier placings when beating Rock Eagle a length and a half in the All-Weather Marathon Championships Conditions Stakes at Lingfield (2m) on Good Friday.
He has obviously had a good start to the year and won the Marathon Final. He will hopefully go for the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot at the end of this month.

Winner of three of his 18 starts and currently rated 102. Finished fourth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Summerghand in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket (6f) on Thursday.
He ran ok in the Abernant on Friday and I'm still not sure if six or seven furlongs is his best trip. He is a very handy horse on his day and we will try and find a little race for him somewhere.

5 b h Noble Mission - Limonar
Winner of five of his 15 starts and currently rated 110. Finished fifth, beaten nine-and three-quarter lengths, to Subjectivist in the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan (2m) in March.
Spanish Mission we are hoping is going to develop into an Ascot Gold Cup horse. He won the Doncaster Cup last year and I don't think the two and a half miles at Ascot will be a problem for him. He's very useful and a lovely horse to have in the yard. He will probably run in the Yorkshire Cup as a prep for Ascot. He wants fast ground though and that will be a deciding factor as to where he goes.

Unfortunately, he has had a few niggles. He ran very well in Qatar and hopefully it is nothing too serious but we are just dealing with it at the moment. He will be right for mid-Summer.

Winner of two of her seven starts and currently rated 107. Finished fifth, beaten two-and-three-quarter lengths, to Top Rank in the Listed Doncaster Mile at Doncaster (1m) in March.
She probably needed the run at Doncaster last month and her main aim would be the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at the Royal meeting. Hopefully, she will run in the Fillies Listed at Goodwood on May 1 which will be her next start. She is effective over seven furlongs or a mile.

He is a decent horse who has low mileage. He needs some cut in the ground so we are just going to wait and he has no fixed targets at the moment. He is a horse to keep an eye on.

He was gelded over the winter and I am pleased with the way he is working. He might run in the City & Suburban Handicap at Epsom. He wouldn't want the ground too fast but he is in good shape.

I thought he ran alright in the Lincoln - he didn’t get the best of runs and it was a really tough race. He is a useful handicapper and the Hunt Cup is his main objective but he will probably go to Chester for the seven-and-a-half-furlong handicap first.

Winner of one of his 10 starts and currently rated 102. Finished runner-up, beaten three-and three-quarter lengths, to Double Or Bubble in a handicap at Newmarket (7f) on Tuesday.
That was a good effort off a mark of 102 in a handicap at Newmarket on Tuesday. He has Group form anyway and he is slightly better on slower ground. He could be one for the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Winner of two of her three starts and currently rated 112. Scored by half a length from Miss Amulet when ending her first season with victory in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket (6f) in September.
She is obviously a Group 1 winner and the aim is to go in the Fred Darling on Sunday as a prep for the 1000 Guineas. She is still quite a bit behind in her coat but her work has been good and that would put her spot on. I think she is quite a useful filly and we look forward to getting her started.

I was very pleased with the way she won at Kempton at the end of last year. She has done really well physically and her work has been good. She is a really nice filly and she will probably go for a conditions race at Ascot at the end of the month and then we will take it from there.

His work has been pretty good and I think he's better with a bit of cut in the ground. He is a fair horse, is well handicapped and effective at seven furlongs and a mile.

He is another who is suited by some give in the ground and we are just waiting with him. He will stay a mile and a half and could make up into a nice three-year-old handicapper.

Winner of one of his four starts and currently rated 110. Best effort when runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length to Alkumait in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury (6f) in September.
He has some smart form from last year. He was a bit disappointing in the Dewhurst but the ground had gone and I think he wasn't quite at his best that day. He is as good a colt as we have got but he had a setback in the winter. He is back in and on the go now but we will probably not run him before Royal Ascot and he will go for the Commonwealth Cup.

King Vega was disappointing when beaten at Newcastle but I think he bumped into a good horse and he didn't run up to his best of his form. He has been gelded and he is a horse we rated very highly but obviously for whatever reason he didn't achieve what he should have done at Newcastle but it's a long season and he's a high-class horse.

He had smart form as a two-year-old and there is plenty of speed in the pedigree but he stayed well enough in the Craven Stakes on his reappearance. Fast ground is not a problem and he can prove effective over seven furlongs and a mile.
