Francis-Henri Graffard Stable Tour
15 Apr 2021

Despite lockdown, Francis-Henri Graffard enjoyed a tremendous 2020 season, notching up four Group 1 victories with the likes of In Swoop, Watch Me, Wooded and The Revenant.

Interestingly, only Wooded provided him with a French Group 1 victory and the Chantilly-based handler said: “It was a great season, and all of the victories stand out in their own right, but it is very hard for a Frenchman to win the Abbaye, so that was amazing.

The whole season though was very strong. The stats were good, and we also had a second in the Arc with In Swoop, so we have put the bar very high for this year. It will be hard to do as well as last year.”

With the backing of some of the most important owner/breeders, the bar might be high, but there are a number of horses, especially of the older generation, that should allow him to enjoy more success at the highest level.

Here, he talks to Liz Price for about horses he is planning on sending to run in the UK, Germany and in the French classics.

Older Horses
Silver Quartz
6 gr g Frankel - Rosamixa
Very consistent miler who enjoys most of his success on the all-weather where he won two races this season before finishing fourth in the all-weather mile championship at Lingfield behind Khuzaam.
Unfortunately, he had a very bad journey over to England. He was stuck at the border for six hours, which didn’t help. And then we had a bad draw. He finished nicely but I probably should have run him in the 10-furlong race as the pace in the mile was probably too quick. He has come out of it very well and we will try to pick up some black type with him. But he needs good ground. There is also a big handicap at Ascot, so maybe we come back for that.
The Revenant
Hazel Lavery
6 che g Dubawi - Hazel Lavery
Winner of the Group 1 QEII Stakes at Ascot at the end of the season, he finished third on his seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Prix Edmond Blanc.
I was very pleased with his seasonal comeback. Everything was against him on that day. The ground was good, he had to carry a penalty and he was running against horses that had already won this year and were in top form. I expected to be beaten by the horses that did beat him. He ran a very good race and is in great form. He is entered in the Prix du Muguet and in the Lockinge Stakes. We will see. It’s not easy, as he would have to carry a penalty in the Prix du Muguet but if the ground is soft, we might be tempted to run there. He can carry the penalty in soft ground. But I would like to go to England with him, yet that depends on how the travel situation will develop. I don’t want him to spend ten hours in a horsebox, like Silver Quartz had to. Obviously, we are working on the travelling situation and if everything is fine, we will go to the Lockinge Stakes. I hope that jockeys will be able to go too at that time.
T'as D'beaux Yeux
5 b g Showcasing - T'as D'beaux Yeux
Consistent miler who won Class 2 races on the all-weather at Chantilly before finishing sixth in a Class 1 race at Lyon over nine furlongs.
He is great, but his handicap mark is very high. I have very few options for him. He is just below Listed level. He is a great soldier but difficult to place.
Big Five
4 bay g Frankel - Louvain
Unbeaten in five starts over 12f to 1m7f. Lifted a Listed race at Chantilly on his last start.
He is a very late maturing horse who had issues as a two and also as a three-year-old. He came into himself really late but he hasn’t done anything wrong yet and he is a horse that we have been looking after. Physically, he has never stopped improving. He has proven he is a top-class stayer in the making. He is entered in a Group 3 on the 2nd of May. He is a gelding and a stayer, so he has plenty of opportunities. The big question is, will we go for the Gold Cup at Ascot this year or will we look after him for another year to give him more experience. We shall see how we go next month. But he is definitely a horse that has the ability of running in the Gold Cup. He is a stayer, but he has that quality of being able to quicken, which is great.
Bois D'argent
Madonna Lily
4 gre g Toronado - Madonna Lily
Won his maiden on his first start last year and made a successful reappearance in a Class 2 race over 10f at Fontainebleau.
He has always been a nice horse. But last year he always had little niggles, which was very frustrating. He ran only twice. I’m very pleased with the way he won the other day and he will be a nice horse over 10 furlongs. He is allowed to run in condition races and now that he is a gelding, we will make him into a good horse, step by step. He will run at Saint-Cloud on the 24 or 26th of April.
Count Rostov
Oasis Dream
4 gr g Oasis Dream - Rosamixa
Winner of two handicaps on the all-weather at Chantilly this season, but was well beaten off the same mark last time out.
He is a nice horse. Last time it didn’t work out. He had a bad draw and the handicapper has also been quite hard on him. He is going to run in a big handicap at Longchamp in mid-May.
4 bay g Muhaarar - Prudenzia
Has had two starts this season on the all-weather at Chantilly and won a Class 3 race over the mile last time out.
We gelded him and this has really helped him. He is a very strong horse and should turn into a Stakes horse in the future. We have plenty of time now to look after him. There is no rush, but he is definitely a nice horse who is suited by the mile.
Extreme Fast
Extreme Green
Le Havre
4 bay f Le Havre - Extreme Green
Won a 1m2½f Listed at ParisLongchamp on her third start and finished the season with a fourth place in a 12f Listed race at Saint-Cloud.
She is running this Sunday against the colts, but she will need that run. I think she can turn into a Group filly this year and hopefully she comes back well on Sunday so that we can start planning. She is a nice filly.
In Swoop
4 bay c Adlerflug - Iota
German Derby winner and runner-up in the 2020 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
He stayed in the yard during the whole winter. Physically, he has done really well, he is much more mature and ready to go again. He will make his seasonal comeback this Sunday at Longchamp in a 12-furlong Listed race. He will be a nice horse in the 12f Group 1 races. The main goal is to win another Group 1 with him. In the spring, he could run in the Coronation Cup or the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, depending on how the travel situation will develop with Covid. And obviously, in the autumn, the Arc will be his main target. He can go in any ground. He doesn’t mind soft ground.
Three Year Olds
Es La Vida
Exotic Rose
Soldier Hollow
3 bay f Soldier Hollow - Exotic Rose
A winner on her debut in November last year, she was fourth in a mile Class 2 at Saint-Cloud in March.
She is a good filly, I have always liked her. She was sick when she came back last time from Saint-Cloud and will now run in a conditions race at Saint-Cloud again. I’m sure she is a Stakes filly. I hope she won’t disappoint me. There were excuses for her last performance.
Sea The Stars
3 bay c Sea The Stars - Roxelana
A runner-up in a Group 3 last season over the mile, he ran in the Saudi Derby in Riyadh in February where he only beat one home.
Unfortunately, he injured himself in Saudi. Nothing major, but he didn’t come back right. He is back at the yard and he is going to be a nice horse over a mile to ten furlongs. It’s a shame that we will miss the spring, but that’s life. We will have him back for the second half of the season.
Le Nomade
3 che c Mastercraftsman - Zeva
Has run twice on the all-weather at Chantilly, was the runner-up in a 9½f maiden.
He is quite a heavy horse. He will win a maiden and he can improve, but I think I might have to geld him to turn him into a nice horse. His form is not that strong so I need to see him again.
Martial Eagle
3 che c Adlerflug - Montezuma
Runner-up in a 10f maiden on his debut last season. Then he won his maiden over 12f at Saint-Cloud in April.
I always liked him. He disappointed me a bit at Fontainebleau, but I think he was not ready. The other day at Saint-Cloud he proved that he has a lot of ability. He is entered in the German Derby. He is definitely a nice prospect for the 12f races this year. His main targets will be either the German Derby or the Grand Prix de Paris. In between we will go for a Stakes race.
War Command
3 bay c War Command - Winografa
Winner on both of his starts this season on the all-weather. Won a handicap over 1m2½f at Chantilly.
He needs a mile and a half. I think he can be a stakes horse in the future over a mile and a half.
Sweet Lady
High Heel Sneakers
Lope De Vega
3 bay f Lope De Vega - High Heel Sneakers
Finished sixth in an extremely tight finish in the Group 1 Criterium at the end of last season and won a Listed over the mile on her reappearance at Saint-Cloud in March.
She is a lovely filly. I have always liked her. She ran over ten furlongs last year in the Criterium but I don’t think she stays. She wintered well and she showed some ability in a Listed race. She runs this Sunday in the Prix la Grotte, the Guineas trial. She is in top form and I hope that she can prove that she is a classic prospect.
Western Soldier
Soldier Hollow
3 bay c Soldier Hollow - Wamika
Has run in two maidens over the mile and finished third last time out at Saint-Cloud.
I always liked him. He is gorgeous but he is very immature. Physically and mentally. Physically he is very heavy and I told his owner that we need to run him to get him fit because at home he doesn’t do enough. I thought last time that he was going to win, but he disappointed me. He stayed on but didn’t quicken. I hope racing will improve him. He should improve with time. Physically there is certainly a lot of improvement in him.
Two Year Olds
3-y-o b f Le Havre – Reggane
She is going to run this Sunday in the Prix de Chaillot. She needs to run. Physically, she is a late developer, but if all goes well, she will improve all year. I think she has an engine. I would be surprised if she won first time out, but she will improve.
Big Five
A stayer in the making, who is still very much on an upward curve.
Es La Vida
Promising filly with plenty more to come.
In Swoop
Went from strength-to-strength last season and there is no indication why he shouldn’t improve further.
Martial Eagle
Comes from a good German family with lots of stamina and should play a major role in three-year-old 12f races this season.
The Revenant
Hugely consistent miler who is among Europe’s best in soft ground.
