Karl Burke Stable Tour
01 Apr 2021

Karl Burke has a busy weekend ahead of him with Exalted Angel spearheading his challenge in the All-Weather Sprint Championship at Lingfield on Good Friday and his bright start to the year with 16 winners already under the belt looks sure to blossom further.

The Middleham trainer has built up the likeable habit of picking up star material from his flurries at the sales and the success in recent years with Group 1 performers like Laurens, Odeliz, Unfortunately, Havana Grey and Quiet Reflection confirm that anything is possible from his historic Spigot Lodge Stables.

Exalted Angel has already notched a Listed race success this year and all eyes will be on Dandalla when she re-emerges in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury this month. The daughter of Dandy Man hacked up in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and followed up in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket in July and her performance in Berkshire will determine whether a 1000 Guineas bid is on the agenda.

Born To Be Alive could also make the trip to Newbury for the Spring Cup after his Lincoln bid was thwarted by drying ground and there look plenty of other likely sorts in the stable that can take Karl and his team forward again.

Karl kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hopes can shine for him this season.

Winner of eight of his 25 starts and currently rated 105. Best effort in two starts last season when runner-up, beaten half a length, to Funny Kid in a conditions event at Deauville (1m 4 1/2f) in February of last year.
He is another coming back from an injury and he won't be able to run for at least a couple of months - he should be ready to run at the end of May/beginning of June. He picked up an injury at the back end of last year and we have given him plenty of time to get over it but he has been another lovely horse for us. He has been around since he was a yearling, and I am sure there is another big race in him somewhere.

Winner of three of his 16 starts and currently rated 104. Winner of two of his 3 starts this year and scored by half a length from On A Session in the Lincoln Trial Handicap at Wolverhampton (1m 1/2f) in March off a mark of 102.
We pulled him out of the Lincoln last Saturday as the ground was just that bit too quick really. It was a shame as it had been the plan all winter but he's had a history of leg problems, so I didn't want to risk him on what I thought wasn't particularly nice ground. If he hadn't had a leg problem, then would have been no problem letting him go and we did run four or five soft ground horses through the two days, and they came back ok but I just couldn't risk him. He will probably go for the Spring Mile at Newbury now in two weeks’ time and I think he is up to winning a mile listed race somewhere - if not in this country then somewhere abroad. He is that sort of class and is a lovely big horse

Winner of five of his 22 starts and currently rated 82. Has run well in four starts at Southwell this year and gained his last success when beating Excessible a length and a quarter over six furlongs off a mark of 76 in February.
He has had a good winter and won twice and just missed out on the hat trick. He will continue on the grass and like a lot of Maysons he must have soft ground. There is a race for him at Redcar on Monday and he will go there if the ground is suitable.

Winner of five of his 17 starts and currently rated 88. Finished 12th, beaten six lengths, to Gunmetal in a handicap at Doncaster (6f) on Sunday off a mark of 88.
He ran a Doncaster on Sunday and, again, we thought the ground was too quick for him, but we felt it was safe enough. Hopefully, the handicapper will relent a little bit which will allow him into the next class down. He is capable of winning on the turf again as long as there's a bit of cut in the ground.

Winner of four of his 15 starts and currently rated 105. Returned to winning form in a listed contest at Lingfield (6f) in February when scoring by a neck from Fizzy Feet.
He goes to Lingfield on Friday for All-Weather Finals Day. He has been a real boom horse through the winter and he gave the impression that the step up to six furlongs suited him really well in the listed race at Lingfield last time. He should be very competitive, and I think the draw will play a big part again over six like it always does but he's in good order. Hopefully, he can pick up some nice prize money.

Winner of three of her 9 starts and currently rated 106. Finished fourth, beaten a length and a half, to Wooded in the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp at Longchamp (5f) last October on her final start.
She is the highest rated off all our older horses at 106 and we felt she was the best horse on the day in the Abbaye last autumn but was given too much to do after a tardy start and ended eight lengths out the back. She was beaten a length and a half staying on and she's a filly who wants to be ridden handy. It was a bit frustrating but again she needs cut in the ground although she would handle goodish ground. She probably goes for a listed race at Bath for a prep run before she goes for a Group 3 in France in May.

Winner of five of his 23 starts and currently rated 95. Finished ninth, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Gunmetal at Doncaster (6f) on Sunday off his current mark.
He ran in the same race as Astro Jakk at Doncaster on Sunday, and he is another Mayson who wants a bit of cut in the ground. He ran quite well but hopefully the handicapper will relent a pound or two. He has had a good winter and he will run through the spring until the ground dries up if it does dry up. He will then have a break before another autumn and winter campaign.

Winner of four of his 11 starts and currently rated 99. Finished eighth, beaten nine and a half lengths, to Royal Commando in a listed event at Doncaster (6f) on Saturday.
He is a very good sprinter and another Mayson who wants soft ground. He really does want soft ground and I think on heavy ground he is almost Group class, but he is going to be very restricted on where he can go and do that. He will probably end up in Ireland or France for his next run as there are limited listed opportunities for him here and he is definitely listed class.

Winner of two of her 4 starts and currently rated 85. Made a promising reappearance when runner-up, beaten half a length, to Made In Italy in a fillies handicap at Newcastle (1m) in March off a mark of 84.
She is a nice filly who just got collared on her reappearance a fortnight ago. I am hoping that she can make up into a black type filly and she has French premiums so I am sure she will end up in France at some stage. That was only her fourth run and she is progressive. She is one that wouldn't want soft ground.

He has been slightly disappointing, but he did win one at Pontefract last year. He had a prep run at Wolverhampton the other day and he will go back to Pontefract in three weeks. Again, he is another Mayson and is another who might want decent ground. He's won on good ground, but he wouldn't want it firm.

He goes to Pontefract on Tuesday and he seems a nice horse but whether he is well handicapped off 88 I am not sure. Six furlongs should be his trip and he could even stay seven, but he looks capable of winning a handicap.

She won at Royal Ascot and then won the Duchess of Cambridge at Newmarket. She heads to what was the Fred Darling at Newbury over seven furlongs and I am sure she will get the seven but whether she will get a mile that will tell us. He was second at Wolverhampton a couple of Saturdays ago and he will probably go back to Wolverhampton for a seven-furlong handicap. He is a progressive horse and how high he will go I don't know, but he's off 80 now and I think he can win off 80 but how much higher we will see.

She has just joined us from Richard Fahey's and I don't know a lot about her as she's only been here a couple of weeks. She is a strapping filly, and I would say she did very well to win first time out as a two-year-old. I think she could only get a bit better as she goes.

She is a filly who ran well when winning at Lingfield a couple of weeks ago and should win again. She ran a bit too free at Lingfield last time and didn't get home and finished fourth - she needs to be ridden with a bit of restraint or being dropped back to six furlongs.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 78. Best effort on final start at Newmarket (7f) in October when runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length, to Beau Jardine.
He finished runner-up to a Godolphin horse at Newmarket and is a half-brother to Dubai Station who finished third in the Norfolk. He wouldn't have his speed but over a mile he can certainly win races.

Winner of one of her 5 starts and currently rated 87. Off the mark with a three and three quarter length success from Mashmoom in a novice event at Ripon (6f) in July.
She is a nicely filly who did well last year and finished on 87. She is owned by Cheveley Park and did well to do what she did at two as she was only a frame of a filly. Hopefully, she can step up on what she did last year and will be ready to run by the end of April.

Winner of one of her 5 starts and currently rated 92. Off the mark with a half length defeat of Isle of May at Newmarket (6f) last July on second start.
She finished fourth in Lowther and was sold in the winter to stay in the yard for some new Japanese owners so I hope she can do well for them. I would say she is going to be more a sprint filly than not, and she will probably go to Chelmsford for the listed three-year-old fillies at the end of April.

Winner of one of his 9 starts and currently rated 91. Off the mark when beating Yazaman three quarters of a length in a conditions event at Newcastle (6f) in October.
He has been a bit of an enigma and was second a lot last year but finally got his head in front at Newcastle with a decent performance. We were probably riding him wrong, and he didn't handle Lingfield last time and was beaten four lengths in what looked like a hot race to me. The idea was to go to Good Friday, but we decided not too as we didn't think the track played to his strengths. A nice straight galloping tracks suits him well and he could go for one of the three-year-old handicaps now over the next few weeks - maybe one at Newmarket.

No wins from 4 starts and currently rated 99. Best effort when runner-up, beaten half a length, to Gear Up in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York (7f) in August.
He was second and just beaten in the Acomb by a horse of Mark Johnston's that won two Group 1s. We were gutted he got beat then and when he got beat first time when he fell out of the stalls at Redcar. He will go for the novice at Pontefract on Tuesday.

Winner of one of his 2 starts. Off the mark with a length and a quarter victory from Cuban Dancer at Wolverhampton (7f) on Monday.
He shaped well when runner-up on his debut at Wolverhampton and stepped up on that effort when going one better on Monday. He is progressing nicely and should win more races.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 72. Finished third, beaten a length and a half, to Mashkoorah on her final start at Newcastle (7f) in September.
She is a nice scopey filly by Awtaad. She disappointed a little last year but was very weak and wasn't finishing her races. She has strengthened and is still a novice so hopefully she can win a novice and go on to better things after that.

Finished runner-up, beaten a short head, to Le Cheval Rapide, in a novice event at Redcar (7f) last November on his only start.
He is a lovely Dutch Art colt who finished second and just got beat on his only run at Redcar last year. He will probably go for a novice at Redcar next week or at Newmarket the week after - probably Newmarket.

She is a lovely filly by Cable Bay from a stout family and she will probably end up wanting at least a mile and a quarter or even a mile and a half. She has been backward and will probably go to Haydock for her first run in three weeks’ time.

We haven't done a lot with the two-year-olds but we run what we think is a nice filly at Newcastle on Friday in Pink Storm. I am sure she will progress, and she is our first juvenile runner of the year and it is her first day at school but she has shown some ability

Had to miss the Lincoln due to the drying ground but should find a decent mile handicap on the grass when conditions allow.

- Her run in the Dubai Duty Free will decide her campaign for the season but plenty more good races in her.
