Donnacha O'Brien Stable Tour
26 Mar 2021

At the age of just 22 Donnacha O’Brien has already accumulated a substantial CV in racing. His time as a jockey was always going to be restricted due to the weight issues associated with his tall frame, but in a career that lasted just over five years he put together a list of achievements that would be the envy of most.

Crowned Champion Apprentice in 2016 and Champion Jockey in 2018 and 2019 in Ireland, he rode over 400 winners that included 10 individual Group 1 successes. Four of those top-level victories came in Classics, winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saxon Warrior and Magna Grecia, the Oaks at Epsom on Forever Together and the Irish Derby on Latrobe. He announced his retirement from race riding in November 2019.

Training was always likely to be the next step for Donnacha and during his last year as a jockey he took charge of a string of horses in Longfield where David Wachman used to train. While he sent out winners from Longfield under Aidan O’Brien’s name in 2019, his first winner after he received his trainer’s licence came when Flower Garland won a maiden at Dundalk on February 21st 2020.

Donnacha wasn’t no time making his mark, saddling Fancy Blue to win the Prix de Diane at Chantilly and the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and Shale to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh to give him a sensational first full season with a licence.

Having set out his stall in no uncertain terms, Donnacha sat down with Kevin Blake from attheraces.com to discuss his Flat team for the campaign ahead.

Rated 102, he ran well without winning last year, most notably finishing second in a Listed race at Navan in August.
He had some very good form last year. He twice finished second to horses that went on to win Group 1 races in Princess Zoe and Galileo Chrome. He’ll be one for staying trips this year and we’ll be open to trying him at two miles. We’ll look to start him off in the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan and hopefully he can find some more improvement this season.

Rated 85, she made it third-time lucky when winning a maiden at Tipperary and subsequently ran well in a Listed race at Naas in October.
She’s a fine, big mare with plenty of scope. She was probably still a bit on the weak side last year and I think she’ll improve this season. She’s big, but she moves like a good-ground filly. The hope with a well-bred filly like her will always be to earn black type, so we’ll give her the chance to do that and hopefully she’ll prove up to it.

She is a very big filly that was probably on the weak side last year. She hasn’t given us a clear sign of her ideal trip yet, but the goal is to try and secure black type for her this year. She should be fine on any ground bar on the firm side.

Out of a top-class racemare that won the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Irish Oaks, she ran below expectations in her only start last year.
She’s a filly that I thought plenty of last year, but she disappointed us in her only start. I’d be very hopeful that she’ll leave that form behind when she runs over longer trips this year. I think she’ll be capable of winning a maiden over a mile-and-a-quarter or further and hopefully kick on from there. She’ll handle an ease in the ground.

Rated 92, she won a maiden at Navan in August.
She’s a lovely filly. She won her maiden at Navan, then finished behind a filly she had beaten there when they re-opposed in a Listed race at the Curragh. I think she might just have been caught out for fitness that day, as I backed off her after she won her maiden and probably overdid it. We’ll start her back in an Oaks trial and we’ll have a better idea of where we stand with her after that. I think she’ll get a mile-and-a-half in due course.

He was a bit unlucky not to win a maiden last year, as he bumped into a few smart prospects. I think he should be well up to winning a maiden over a mile or a mile-and-a-quarter. The hope is that he’ll be a stakes horse. He will handle an ease in the ground.

Rated 98, he was a maiden at Leopardstown and finished fourth in the KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes on Irish Champions Weekend.
He’s a horse we’ve always liked, but he probably did more than we expected him to last season. He was always likely to be at his best over middle distances as a three-year-old, so for him to do as much as he did last season is very encouraging for his future. We’ll start him off in a Derby trial. He doesn’t want the ground too soft, so we’ll wait for a bit of nice ground for him. We are hoping that he’ll acquit himself well in the trials and could be one to end up in a Derby or a St Leger.

Rated 89, she made it fourth-time lucky with winning a maiden at Dundalk in November.
She’s a filly that has always worked very well. She was a little bit disappointing in a couple of maidens, but eventually got her head in front at Dundalk in November. She beat Joan Of Arc that day and she has won since and is well regarded. The plan is to start her off in the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and possibly go on to the Irish 1,000 Guineas from there. She might not want any further than a mile and should be fine on any ground bar extremes.

Shaped with promise on her debut prior to running below expectations on her second start.
We thought a lot of her last year and she ran a nice race on her debut despite greenness, but she was a bit disappointing on her second start and was probably just a bit weak to do herself justice. She’s going very well at the minute and I’d be very hopeful that she’ll win a maiden over a mile-and-a-quarter or a mile-and-a-half. She works like a stakes filly at home, but she has to go and deliver on the track now.

Rated 94, she made a winning debut at Leopardstown in July and ran well in her only other start in the Flame Of Tara Stakes at the Curragh.
We have always thought a lot of her. She made a winning debut at Leopardstown and ran well enough in a Group 3 in her only start after that, but she was probably a little bit too backward to do herself justice. We pulled up with her after that, as I wanted to give her a long break to strengthen up and she put on about 40kg over the winter. It has taken time to work her back to fitness, but she’s getting there. I think she’s an Oaks type and we’ll give her the chance to show herself to be up to that in a trial. A little bit of ease in the ground will be no harm for her.

He’s a nice horse and won what was a weak maiden at Gowran Park in October. He’ll handle soft ground and is probably going to be best at six or seven furlongs. His mark is high enough based on his form, but sure hopefully he can improve with racing and be competitive in handicaps. He’ll be ready to run in a couple of weeks.

Rated 113, she won the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown and the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last season.
She was a brilliant filly for us last year and has wintered really well. She’s coming through all her work very nicely and her weight is right where I want it to be. All the signs are good. I know she probably looked a bit small compared to Pretty Gorgeous last season, but most fillies would look a bit small stood in against Pretty Gorgeous! Her mother Homecoming Queen was a small filly and that didn’t stop her winning the 1000 Guineas. Shale is a bit bigger than she was. We are thinking about starting her back in the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial, but she’ll just be ready to start back there and the hope would be for that to put her spot on for either the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket or the Irish 1,000 Guineas. I think she’ll have a good chance of staying a mile-and-a-quarter. While she has won on testing ground, she moves like a good-ground filly and I think decent ground will be ideal for her.

He’s a horse that always showed a lot of class at home. He showed a useful level of form on the track last year, but didn’t really match the level he was showing at home. We chanced running him in the Patton Stakes at Dundalk as it looked a weak race, but he just wasn’t fit enough on the day. He’ll improve a lot from that, and we might look to run him in a handicap at Cork next week. We’ll stick the blinkers back on him and I think he’ll win more races.

He shows plenty of pace at home and I felt he was ready to start off at the Curragh last week. I thought I had him fit enough to do himself justice, then I saw some of the other horses in the parade ring and realised that he probably wasn’t as fit as I thought! He just got a bit tired on the ground. He shows plenty of ability at home and should improve a lot on better ground.

An unraced colt from the family of North Light, he realised 210,00gns as a yearling.
He’s a very nice horse that is working well. He’s the only Churchill I have, and I like him a lot. He should be ready to start off over six furlongs before going up to seven furlongs.
