James Tate Stable Tour
25 Mar 2021

JAMES TATE had to an endure a frustrating 2020 with his potentially top-class Far Above suffering an injury which forced his retirement after landing the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket in June. Tate’s final figure of 28 winner for the season failed to continue the upswing in fortunes of a very much upwardly mobile trainer previously.

The early signs are that Tate is back on the right road with seven winners from 46 winners so far and the prospects looking bright that he can head toward his personal best of 72 in 2019 which netted the Jamesfield Place outfit £926,098.

The appropriately-named Top Rank kicks off his new season in the Listed Unibet Doncaster Mile on Saturday and the winner of a Group 3 event at Haydock last September looks just the sort that Tate can eke out further improvement from.

Tate will also have Shimmering Dawn and Victory Heights in action at Lingfield on Good Friday on All-Weather Finals Day and there are plenty other emerging talents in his team that will be testing their mettle shortly, too.

James kindly spoke to Tony Elves for about those inmates he hopes can carry him forward this season.

Older Horses
Shimmering Dawn
Subtle Shimmer
5 b m Morpheus - Subtle Shimmer
Winner of six of her 18 starts and currently rated 95. Gained her last success when beating Amber Island three quarters of a length in a conditions event at Chelmsford (7f) in February.
She goes for the AW Finals on April 2. She's very effective over six and seven furlongs on the All-Weather and following that she will probably be targeted for a seven-furlong Fillies Listed race at Chelmsford in July and we will find something in between. She struggled a little bit last time in a Listed at Wolverhampton against the colts but it was quite a strong race and for some reason they weren't coming from behind that day - there was a bit of a tail wind up the straight so I wouldn't worry about that run. I think she would have a good chance at Lingfield on Good Friday.
Top Rank
Countess Ferrama
Dark Angel
5 gr h Dark Angel - Countess Ferrama
Winner of five of his seven starts and currently rated 111. Gained his last victory when scoring by a length and a half from My Oberon in a Group 3 contest at Haydock (1m) in September.
He goes for the Listed Doncaster Mile on Saturday. The entries look warm enough but he is in very good form. The ground is good to soft (good) with the chance of rain at the end of the week and he is a horse who goes on very soft ground and therefore we probably wouldn't want to run him on real fast ground. He is a Group 3 winner from last year and he needs to take a step up in form to be talking of a run Lockinge and things like that but he has improved every year so far. We will just take it one step at a time and if he was to win on Saturday it would be a good performance as he does have to carry a 5lb penalty for his Group 3 win as well.
Back In The Frame
Dark Angel
5 gr g Dark Angel - Back In The Frame
Winner of two of his 13 starts and currently rated 90. Came closest to victory last season (trained by Ian Williams) when runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Tempus in a handicap at Ascot (1m) last September off a mark of 91.
He is a new horse to the stable and he joined us in the winter. He is currently rated 90 and he seems to be effective at seven furlongs and a mile. He is going nicely and we will probably start him off in the middle of April.
Wise Words
5 b f Sepoy - Akhmatova
Winner of three of her 11 starts and currently rated 96. Best effort in two starts last season when fourth, beaten a length and three quarters, to Tarboosh in the listed Scarbrough Stakes at Doncaster (5f) on her reappearance in September.
She's a grand big filly and she had a nightmare year last year. She was ready in the spring when racing was off as result of Covid and when racing started, she had a temperature and a bad foot abscess and we had to rush her back to get her to a Listed at Doncaster. She was a very unlucky fourth and then we backed her up at Newbury a few days later and that didn't work - she just bounced and found the race coming too quick. That was it as she doesn't really go on the All-Weather. She has had a long break since then and is pretty good form and going better than ever. I would like to think she can pick up a black type race this season over five furlongs and her starting point is the Listed five furlong fillies at Bath on April 16.
Sky Commander
Queen Of Skies
War Command
4 b c War Command - Queen Of Skies
Winner of one of his four starts and currently rated 91. Finished runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length, to Going Places in a handicap at Lingfield (7f) this month off a mark of 90.
He has always had a bit of talent and we have found out after his first few runs that he only really goes on the All-Weather and doesn't go on the turf at all. In terms of AW runs he was a seven-length winner at Kempton then was off for a long time and was second last week just hands and heels after meeting a bit of traffic. I would think he should be hard to beat next time and his next possible race is at Chelmsford on April 2.
Three Year Olds
Final Voyage
3 b c Camacho - Shamayel
Winner of five of his eight starts and currently rated 93. Has won his last four starts and carried on the sequence with a half-length defeat of Mystery Angel at Wolverhampton (1m½f) off a mark of 92.
He is better on the All-Weather and he has a sequence of four on that type of surface. His next run will be at the beginning of April most likely the Listed Burradon Stakes at Newcastle although there is a valuable conditions race at Chelmsford the day before and quite a valuable conditions race at Kempton a couple of days later all over a mile. We will choose from one of those races nearer the time and long term I could see him progressing and getting a mile and a quarter one day too.
Hit The Heights
I'm Yours
3 b c Iffraaj - I'm Yours
Winner of his only start in a novice event at Lingfield (7f) in November when short heading Smart Start.
He has done nothing wrong so far and won his only start over seven furlongs. I can see him getting a mile in time and he is one that should progress with racing. There's no specific start for him we will just find a novice race in April.
Join Forces
Lethal Force
3 gr f Lethal Force - Enrol
Placed in both starts in January and finished runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Invincible Swing latest outing at Kempton (7f).
She is a big tall filly and whatever she is doing at this stage of her career I am sure she will improve on it as the season goes on or even next year. She was very green when third at Lingfield and then was unlucky at Kempton with the way the race panned out. She broke slow and then was rushed to the front and just got nailed near the line. I think she is one to follow.
One Over Par
3 b c Gleneagles - Cherrington
Winner of one of his three starts and currently rated 79. Off the mark with a short head success from Batraan at Newcastle (6f) in October.
He was a shell of a horse last year and very unfurnished and weak looking. I think he did quite well to win at the third attempt at Newcastle over six furlongs. He will probably start off over the same trip in April but there's a chance he might get a little bit further.
Penny Post
3 b f Camelot - Penny Post
No wins from a pair of starts. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Epic Pass at Wolverhampton (1m½f) in December on second start.
She is a great big Camelot filly. Her pedigree is a blend of speed and stamina but I think she will turn into a middle-distance filly. She was second in a colt's race over a mile on her second start and she will be out in April and I think she should progress with time and distance on the grass this year.
Raise The Roof
Free Eagle
3 b f Free Eagle - Starletina
Winner of one of her two starts. Off the mark second time of asking when beating Greystoke three quarter of a length in a novice event at Wolverhampton (1m 1½f) in February.
She is a great big Free Eagle filly and she was unlucky (clipped heels) on debut at Wolverhampton in January and then won on her second visit. We gave her a little break after that but she should be back in April and could be the sort of filly to progress all year.
State Of Play
3 b c Dark Angel - Ambiguous
He is a monster of a physical specimen and is an unraced three-year-old. He is a Dark Angel out of a Kheleyf sister to a L'Abbaye and a Nunthorpe winner so it is a very fast family. He is going nicely at home and he is going to start off over five furlongs at Newcastle on April 2. I am sure he will progress as he is a big heavy horse and he won't be at his peak on debut by any means but I think he will be better on the grass too. All being well he will be one to follow.
Twilight Secret
Twilight Son
3 b c Twilight Son - Crinkle
Finished runner-up, beaten three and a half lengths, to Dragon Symbol on his debut at Wolverhampton (6f) this month.
He is a nice big Twilight Son colt who ran a nice race first time out at Wolverhampton. The winner has won again since and the Clive Cox horse that finished third has won and he was green and did pretty well to run second. He will probably run a straight six on the grass in April and he could be a half decent horse.
Victory Heights
3 b c Siyouni - Zibeling
Winner of three of his seven starts and currently rated 97. Scored by a nose from Mighty Gurkha in conditions race at Wolverhampton (6f) latest start.
He is another for the All-Weather Finals at Lingfield on Good Friday. He won the fast-track qualifier at Wolverhampton back in December and is in good form. He goes there and then we will take the rest of the season as it comes after that.
Ninas Rainbow
3 b c Iffraaj - Ninas Rainbow
No wins from two starts. Finished third, beaten six and a half lengths, to Jacinth at Lingfield (7f) in October when last seen out.
He is a lovely big Iffraaj colt from a German family. He showed promise in both of his runs at Sandown and then on the All-Weather - both times finding seven furlongs too sharp and too short. He is going nicely and has matured really well over the winter. He will probably start over a straight mile at something like Redcar on April 5.
Two Year Olds
High Velocity
Reflect Alexander
2 gr c Gutaifan - Reflect Alexander
He is a two-year-old but looks like a three-year-old and is a massive big strong powerful colt. He is bred for speed and is Gutaifan out of a Kodiac mare out of a Red Clubs mare. He is going nicely and will probably start off in the middle of April in a five-furlong novice.
Miss Shirley
b f Dandy Man - Shirley
She doesn't have the best pedigree but she is a strong attractive filly who is showing up well at the moment. We will start her off over five or six and I am sure she will be out early.
Ocean Wave
ch f Le Havre - Gold Sands
She is an unraced Le Havre filly out of a Cape Cross mare we trained, Gold Sands. She is a lovely big filly with a lovely big stride and she will start off in seven or mile novices in April and I hope she is half decent.
Stylish Icon
2 b f Starspangledbanner - Refreshed
She is a big strong filly who was bought from the December Sales so the others have a bit of a head start on her but has caught them up well and looks pretty fast so hopefully should be good.
b f Invincible Spirit - Blhadawa
She is out of Blhadawa who won a Listed race for us at Haydock over six furlongs. She reminds me very much of her dam and she is going really well. I am looking forward to run her and could start in a fillies’ maiden at the Craven meeting.
b c Kingman - Lamar
This is another out of a dam we trained and he is a big strong Kingman colt. The dam was a Listed winner for us and he started a little bit late but has caught them up already and goes really well. He will probably start over six furlongs in May.
b f Dark Angel - Roseraie
She is a full sister to Dark Rose Angel who finished second in the May Hill and she is strong and goes well. She is showing plenty of speed but I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up over seven furlongs or a mile later in the year.
b f Shamardal - Samdaniya
She is a half-sister to Dhabyah that won the Fred Darling. She has shown plenty of speed and I don't know if she will start off over five or six.
Join Forces
Came up against a tartar on his last start at Kempton in January and can soon go one better.
Raise The Roof
After a luckless debut, had few problems going one better at Wolverhampton and can carry on improving.
Sky Commander
Ran a blinder when runner-up on his reappearance and confidently expected to go one better next time.
Top Rank
Has to carry a 5lb penalty at Doncaster on Saturday but has been going great guns in his work at home.
New recruit who can be nurtured back to winning form for his stable.
Wise Words
Didn't have much luck last season but can make up for lost time this time around in sprint contests.
