Joseph O'Brien Stable Tour
25 Mar 2021

Joseph O’Brien has achieved more in racing at the age of 28 that most could dream of achieving in a lifetime, yet the remarkable thing is that he is only just getting started.

As a jockey he rode 31 Group 1 winners including two renewals of the Derby at Epsom before the inevitable day came where his lengthy frame made it impractical for him to make the weight required to ride on the Flat. While he was still just 22 years old when that day came, he had already been playing a major role as a trainer under his father Aidan O’Brien’s name on the family farm in Owning, with him being given all the credit for the success of Ivanovich Gorbatov in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2016.

Having been granted his own license to train in June 2016, O’Brien has already trained multiple Group 1 winners on the Flat and Grade 1 winners over jumps. In just his second full Flat season in 2018 he finished second in the Irish trainers’ championship and became the first Irish trainer other than Aidan O’Brien to train 100 domestic winners on the Flat in a calendar year since 1994, a feat he repeated in 2019 and 2020.

With a particularly strong team of older horses and some exciting three-year-olds, 2021 looks set to be another big season for O’Brien. He sat down with Kevin Blake from to discuss his Flat team for the upcoming season.

Older Horses
Twilight Payment
Dream On Buddy
8 b g Teofilo - Dream On Buddy
Rated 117, he won the Vintage Crop Stakes, the Curragh Cup and the Melbourne Cup last year.
He had an incredible season last year and his win in the Melbourne Cup was very special. He had a break when he came home and looks great. We’re looking forward to what will hopefully be another good season for him. The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot will be considered along the way. We’ll take it race by race with him.
Master Of Reality
6 b g Frankel - L'Ancresse
Rated 113, he finished in the frame in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in 2019 and won a Listed race at Down Royal last season.
He had another good season last year. The ground was probably just too firm for him in the Melbourne Cup. We’ll give him a similar sort of campaign this year and the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot will come into considerations for sure.
Speak In Colours
Maglietta Fina
6 g h Excelebration - Maglietta Fina
Rated 110, he won the Greenlands Stakes Stakes at the Curragh and the Ballycorus Stakes at Fairyhouse last year.
He’s out in Dubai and will run in the Al Quoz Sprint on Saturday. He had a nice prep race at Dundalk and will hopefully run well out there. When he arrives home, we’ll give him a similar sort of campaign to last year. He’s won Stakes races for us every year since he joined us and has been a wonderful horse for us. Hopefully he’ll have another good season.
Dance Jupiter
5 br g Kingsbarns - Mascara
Rated 101, he progressed into a smart handicapper after joining O’Brien last year, winning at Naas on his final start of the season.
We are pleased with how he wintered. He finished off last season well and we are hopeful that he’ll continue to improve. We’ll start him off in handicaps, but we think he’ll end up in stakes company. He likes an ease and wouldn’t want it too firm. He is unexposed at a mile-and-a-quarter and that trip should suit him well.
Delicate Charm
Holy Roman Emperor
5 b g Holy Roman Emperor - Delicate Charm
Rated 111, he won the Devoy Stakes at Naas and acquitted himself very well without winning in Group company last season.
He had another strong season this year and looked better than ever in his last couple of runs. I’d say we’ll give him a similar campaign this year. A mile-and-a-quarter suits him well, but we might try a mile-and-a-half with him again. He’s entered in the Devoy Stakes at Naas on Sunday, but we haven’t decided whether he’ll run yet.
Patrick Sarsfield
Ultra Appeal
5 b g Australia - Ultra Appeal
Rated 114, he showed substantial improvement last season to win the Meld Stakes at Leopardstown and finish in the frame in Group 1 and Group 2 company.
He had a brilliant season for us last year and showed that he’s not far off being a Group 1 horse. We’ll be hoping to squeeze a little bit more improvement out of him. A mile-and-a-quarter looks a good trip for him. An ease in the ground will always be a help to him.
Sea The Moon
5 b g Sea The Moon - Diablerette
Rated 107, he won a Listed race at Roscommon and finished second in two Grade 3 handicaps in Australia last season.
Pondus was unlucky not to win down in Australia last year. He had a good break after that and has come back in great shape. He’ll probably have a similar campaign to last year and it would be great to get him back to Australia, as I don’t think they’ve seen the very best of him down there yet.
Dress Rehearsal
Invincible Spirit
5 b f Invincible Spirit - Dress Rehearsal
Rated 104, she improved throughout last season culminating in a victory in a Listed race at Bath in October.
She progressed very well up through the ranks last season and ended up winning a Listed race at Bath. We’ll be hopeful that she can improve again this season and winning a Group race will be the goal. She likes an ease in the ground.
Baron Samedi
Dame Shirley
Harbour Watch
4 b g Harbour Watch - Dame Shirley
Rated 112, he won five races in a row last year culminating in the Prix du Conseil de Paris at Longchamp in October.
He was a great improver last year. He benefited from being gelded and just seemed to improve with racing. We might start him off at around a mile-and-a-quarter, but I think we’ll end up exploring longer trips with him. He relaxes very well, so he’ll give himself a great chance to stay well. He’s quite versatile with ground, but wouldn’t want it overly firm.
Never Forgotten
4 b f Galileo - Ishvana
Rated 89, she won a maiden at Gowran Park last July.
She had a setback after winning a maiden last year, but we always thought she could be a Stakes filly. Her work has been good since she’s come back in this year. She’s entered in the Park Express Stakes at Naas on Sunday, but we won’t make a decision on that until a bit closer to the time. She should stay a mile-and-a-quarter and I’m hopeful she’ll get black type.
American Pharoah
4 bay f American Pharoah - Mohini
Rated 113, she won the Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes at Doncaster and finished second in the Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp last season.
Unfortunately, Pista met with an injury and has had to be retired from racing. We were really looking forward to her this year, so that’s a big pity. She is being covered this year and hopefully she’ll produce offspring that are as talented as she was in the years ahead.
Thundering Nights
Cape Castle
Night Of Thunder
4 b f Night Of Thunder - Cape Castle
Rated 105, she won the Snow Fairy Fillies Stakes at the Curragh last year.
She had a great season last year and has wintered well. We hope she’s a filly that can be competitive in Group 2 or even Group 1 company this year. She sharpened up as last season went on and a mile-and-a-quarter might prove to be her best trip.
Three Year Olds
Zee Zee Gee
3 b c Zoffany - Zee Zee Gee
Made an impressive winning debut at Leopardstown in July.
He’s a horse we’ve always liked. He had a bit of setback after his winning debut, which is why he didn’t run again. He wintered particularly well and is taking a bit longer than most of ours to get fit as a result, but we’re pleased with how he is progressing. He might well end up being a miler, but he’s out of a Galileo mare, so that might give him a chance of staying a bit further. The hope is that he’ll be ready in time.
Isle Of Sark
Endless Fancy
Kitten's Joy
3 b c Kitten's Joy - Endless Fancy
Made an impressive winning debut at Dundalk in November.
He’s a very nice horse that wintered very well. His work has always been very good. We’re looking to start him back in a Guineas trial. I’d say he’ll end up operating at a mile or a mile-and-a-quarter. We’re looking forward to him.
Lovely Esteem
Persona Grata
3 b f Siyouni - Persona Grata
Rated 88, she made it second-time lucky when winning a maiden at Dundalk in January.
We were very happy with her performance when winning a maiden at Dundalk. We were aiming her at the Patton Stakes at Dundalk, but she had a little hold-up that prevented us running there. She’s back in full work now. We might start her back in handicap company and hopefully she can progress up the ranks. She’ll be well suited by a mile and might get a bit further in time.
3 b c Mehmas - Lillebonne
Rated 100, he won two valuable nurseries prior to finishing second in a Listed race at Dundalk last season.
He finished off last season very well. He has wintered well and he’s entitled to run in the Guineas trial. A mile is probably going to be a good trip for him.
My Generation
3 ch f Speightstown - Louvakhova
Built on her promising debut when winning the Patton Stakes at Dundalk by five lengths in March.
She won the Patton Stakes at Dundalk in great style and we are training her for the 1,000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown. As long as the ground isn’t too soft, that’s where we’d like to run her. I think a mile is going to be a good trip for her. We can see shades of her half-brother Crossfirehurricane in her. She certainly has his attitude and will to win.
Pretty Gorgeous
Lady Gorgeous
3 b f Lawman - Lady Gorgeous
Rated 113, she won three of her five starts last year including the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh and the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket.
We are very pleased with her. She came through the winter really well and looks fantastic. We haven’t decided yet whether we will run her in a Guineas trial or go straight to the Guineas. We saw last year that she handles soft ground well, but I think she’ll prove quite versatile on that front. The experience that she got at Newmarket in the Fillies Mile can do her no harm with a view to going back there for the 1000 Guineas. I could see her getting a mile-and-a-quarter in due course for sure.
Sense Of Style
3 b f Zoffany - Attire
Rated 101, she won a maiden at Naas and finished a short-head second in a Listed race at the Curragh on her final start of last season.
She was unlucky not to win a Listed race last year. She has wintered well and winning a Listed race will be the big aim with her this season. I think she’ll stay a mile-and-a-quarter and should prove versatile with regard to ground.
Southern Lights
Sea The Stars
3 b c Sea The Stars - Ownwan
Made a promising debut when second in a maiden at Naas in September.
He ran very well in his only start last season. He looks really well and will start off in a mile-and-a-quarter maiden. I’d say he’ll get a mile-and-a-half in due course. We think he’s a promising horse.
State Of Rest
3 b c Starspangledbanner - Repose
Rated 110, he made a winning debut in a maiden at Fairyhouse and went on to run well without winning in Group company, most notably finished a close third in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.
He progressed throughout last season and has come back in looking really well. We’ll look to start him off in a Guineas trial and I could see him potentially getting a mile-and-a-quarter in due course. He won’t want testing ground, but everything else should be fine for him.
Thinking Of You
American Pharoah
3 b f American Pharoah - Fabulous
Rated 102, she made a winning debut at Limerick and ran well without winning in two subsequent starts in Group 3 company.
She’s a lovely filly that got Group 3-placed last season. We probably just ran her back too quickly when she disappointed in the Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket in her final outing last season. The main objective will be to win a Stakes race with her. A mile should be a good trip, but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of her staying a mile-and-a-quarter.
Thunder Moon
Small Sacrifice
3 b c Zoffany - Small Sacrifice
Rated 117, he won the National Stakes at the Curragh and finished third in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last year.
He was brilliant for us last year. He was deadly in the National Stakes and I thought he ran very well in the Dewhurst. He was drawn in the wrong part of the track that day and the ground was softer than ideal, so it was a very good run in the circumstances I thought. He came through the winter very well and is in great shape. We haven’t made a final decision on whether to run him in a trial or go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, but that’s what his target is. It looks as though a mile will be his trip. We are excited to see how far he can go this season.
On A Pedestal
Fastnet Rock
3 b f Fastnet Rock - On A Pedestal
Rated 95, she finished third in the Flame Of Tara Stakes at the Curragh last year.
She was Group-placed last season and is still a maiden. We might just have pitched her in a bit deep for her final start in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster and she ran below form there. I’d say we’ll start her back in a maiden and hopefully get back to stakes company after that. I’d be hopeful that she will stay a mile-and-a-half in due course.
Baron Samedi
Rapidly progressed into a Group winner and could improve again.
Isle Of Sark
Maidan winner that looks a stakes horse in the making.
My Generation
Listed winner that looks an exciting prospect.
Patrick Sarsfield
Progressive Group performer that may well improve again.
Pretty Gorgeous
Fillies Mile winner that is a Classic contender.
Thunder Moon
National Stakes winner that looks a live 2000 Guineas contender.
Twilight Payment
Melbourne Cup winner that should be a leading stayer.
