Aidan O'Brien Stable Tour
24 Mar 2021

Aidan O’Brien is simply a phenomenon in the world of racing. A record-breaking National Hunt trainer in the initial stages of his career, his abundant talents didn’t go unnoticed, and he was appointed as the trainer in the historic Ballydoyle complex in 1996 at the age of just 26.

He quickly established himself as a dominant force in Irish racing and since then has broken every record worth breaking and won every race worth winning in Europe and beyond. Most recently, he broke the world record for the number of Group/Grade 1 winners trained in a calendar year by enjoying 28 such victories in 2017.

As always, O’Brien has an array of stars under his care for the new season headlined by a strong team of older horses including Love, Mogul and Japan. Just as exciting are his team of three-year-olds, with St Mark’s Basilica, High Definition and Santa Barbara being just three of his potential Classic winners.

Aidan talked to Kevin Blake of attheraces.com to discuss the Ballydoyle prospects for the 2021 season and here are his thoughts.

Rated 120, he won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp and the Juddmonte International at York as a three-year-old, but failed to add to his tally last year.
We’re very happy with him this year. We’re definitely happier than we were this time last year and we think he’s going to be a better horse this year. He has changed more from four to five than he did from three to four and he might just have needed that time to grow into himself. We didn’t ever get a clear run with him last year. We were chasing our tail with him from the start of the season and a couple of little issues during the season kept us on the backfoot. We really did think we had him in very good shape for the Arc, but that wasn’t to be. We are looking forward to him this year.

Rated 120, he is a three-time winner in Group company and concluded his most recent campaign by finishing second to Sir Dragonet in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
He’s done very well over the winter and we’re very happy with him. We just gave him just one run in Australia late last year, but it was a very good run. We think he could be a very nice horse this season. I think a mile-and-a-quarter is a good trip for him, but I couldn’t completely rule out potentially trying a bit further at some stage. Fast ground suits him very well.

Rated 111, he won a maiden at Galway and the Beresford Stakes at the Curragh prior to finishing second in the Vertem Futurity in 2019, but missed all of last season due to injury.
He’s going lovely. He’s taking time to get fit, as he missed so much time last year, but he’s in full work and going nicely. We thought about potentially running him at Naas this weekend, but we’ve decided to wait a little longer. He should be ready to go in another two or three weeks. I’d say a mile-and-a-quarter will be a good trip for him, though he’ll have a chance of getting a mile-and-a-half if he’s asked to. He’ll appreciate a sound surface.

Rated 117, he won the Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh as a juvenile and finished placed in Group 1 company on four occasions last season.
We always thought he would be a better four-year-old than three-year-old and he did very well over the winter. He’s in full work, but he might be a little bit behind some of the others at the minute. We think he’s going to be a miler this year.

Rated 122, she won the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh as a juvenile and the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks last season.
She’s in great order. She has done plenty of work and is good and forward. She’ll be ready to start whenever we want her. Though, those Listed and Group races leading up to the Tattersalls Gold Cup can often be run on bad ground and ideally we wouldn’t like to ask her to start off on that sort of surface. If need be, she’ll have a few away days to get ready for the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but however we get there, that’s our first big target with her. I’d imagine she’ll campaign over a mile-and-a-quarter and a mile-and-a-half. She is just very natural. She is only half speeding with her work companions, really. She finds it all very easy. We’re very excited about getting her back to the track.

Rated 121, he won the KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown as a juvenile and came good in second half of last season by winning the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp and the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin.
He’s in great order and has gone to Dubai for the Sheema Classic on Saturday. It was a help to us this season that he was still racing up to mid-December last year, as he’s physically very strong and carries a fair bit of weight. He has the body of a sprinter/miler, but of course we know he’s a middle-distance horse. We think the flat track and good ground at Meydan will both suit him. For his first run, we are as happy as we could be with him. I could see him going back to a mile-and-a-quarter at some stage too.

Rated 115, he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and the Irish Derby last year.
We are delighted with his progress over the winter, and I think it was the right decision not to run him in Australia. Physically, he has changed a lot from three to four. He is very natural in his work and is going well. For a horse that stays well, he shows a lot of pace in his work. He is clear-winded, sound and straightforward. We’ll probably start him early enough and will look to try and make him a Cup horse. He could potentially start back in the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan.

Rated 120, he won the Derby at Epsom by a wide margin last year.
He’s in full work and is in great order. We thought he’d change a lot from three to four and he has. He is versatile in terms of ground and has a big engine. We were delighted with his run in the Grand Prix de Paris and thought we were going to see a monster of a run from him in the Arc, but he didn’t get to run there unfortunately. He stays a mile-and-a-half, but I think he’ll be comfortable at a mile-and-a-quarter too. He’s very straightforward and genuine. We are looking forward to him this year.

Rated 116, he finished second in the Irish Derby and Melbourne Cup last season.
He came back from Australia in great order. He’s in full work and looks great. We’ll go gentle with him and will probably start him back over a mile-and-a-quarter. We don’t really see him as a stayer. We ran him in the Melbourne Cup as we felt he was very well-in at the weights there and that it was worth taking a chance. I don’t think he’ll go for the Melbourne Cup again as he’d have a lot more weight to carry, but he showed he can travel and operate down there, so he could go back there for other big races over shorter trips.

He won a maiden in good style last season and he’s working like he’ll be ready to start off soon. He’s good and forward and we’ll look at a Derby trial for him. He should have a bit of class over a mile-and-a-quarter. I think better ground will suit him. He probably did well to win on debut given how soft the ground was.

We are very happy with him. He was always a big horse, but he’s really after filling out over the winter. He’s nice and forward. He’s going through his work very easily at the moment. I couldn’t be happier with him. It looks like he’ll go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. He doesn’t strike me as one that will want much further than a mile, but I couldn’t completely rule it out as we did end up going a mile-and-a-quarter with another War Front in Declaration Of War.

He’s done very well in physical terms over the winter and is in full work. He worked very nicely this morning, actually. We’ll look to start him off in a Derby trial. He’s a beautiful mover, but never got the chance to run on decent ground last season. I think he’ll be much better suited by a sounder surface. His full-brother Southern France was an extremely big horse, but this fella is a lovely size. Big, but very well put together. We got a lot of experience into him in a short space on time last year and he travelled abroad too, so hopefully that will all stand to him this year.

He’s a horse that will stay well and handles soft ground. He should get a mile-and-a-half and could well get further. He’s not a horse that worries too much about anything and has a lazy style about him. He should improve with racing.

Rated 104, he won a maiden at Gowran Park in September and finished fourth in the Madrid Handicap at the Curragh on his seasonal reappearance in March.
He ran well in the Madrid at the Curragh on Sunday. He was rated 99 over the winter and we had that race in mind for him for a while, but when the weights came out, he had been raised to 104, so he ended up carrying 10 stone which was a tough ask for a three-year-old on bad ground in March. We thought he would improve from that run and he’s come out of it well. Better ground will be a help to him. He has plenty of pace, but he might get a mile. We’ll probably go to a Guineas trial with him next.

Rated 115, he made a winning debut in a maiden at the Curragh in August and followed up by coming from last to first to win the Beresford Stakes back at that track.
He’s going very well and doing everything right. He was big and babyish last year, so we had always planned to only run him twice as a two-year-old. We were delighted with him in the Beresford, as we took our time with him and he did very well to win in the circumstances. He has a lovely, relaxed way of doing everything and gets over the ground very easily. He always gives you the impression that he has plenty left to give no matter what you are doing with him. He’s forward and will be ready to start in a Derby trial. We were thinking about potentially going to the 2000 Guineas first with him, but we have plenty for that, so we are leaning towards the Derby trial route with him now. There’s no doubt that better ground will suit him.

Made it second-time lucky when making a winning seasonal reappearance in a maiden at the Curragh in March.
We were very happy with her win on Sunday, and she will definitely step up from that. She’s an easy filly to train. Very natural. She’ll be very comfortable stepping up to a mile, but I’m not sure how much further than that she’ll stay. She’s a good-moving filly that will appreciate better ground. The 1000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown would be the logical next step for her.

We’re very happy with him. He’s done very well since last year and is working very nicely. Made an impressive winning debut in a maiden at the Curragh in November.
She’s a lovely filly that is fit and forward. Whether we start her in a Guineas trial or go straight up to a mile with her, she’s ready to go. She has a big action and handled soft ground well on her debut, but we’ve always felt that she’ll handle better ground too.

Made it second-time lucky when winning a maiden at Gowran Park in October.
He’s done very well in physical terms and is going very well. He’s showing plenty of speed in his work and I’m not sure how far he’ll stay. He won on testing ground, but I’d say he’ll step up a good bit on better ground.

Rated 98, he made it second-time lucky when winning a conditions race at Gowran Park in October.
He’s in good order and is forward. He isn’t too hard on himself at home, so it’s hard to know what’s in the locker with him. He looked a slow enough learner in his runs last year too, so he should keep improving with racing.

Made an impressive winning debut in a maiden at the Curragh in September.
“She’s done unbelievably well in physical terms over the winter. She looks like a five-year-old colt. She goes through her work unbelievably well. She shows loads of speed and always worked with an awful lot of class. Whether we start her in the Guineas trial at Leopardstown or go straight to the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, we haven’t decided yet. We won’t over-race her, we’ll keep her runs to a minimum if we can, but she shows an unbelievable amount of class at home. In terms of her stamina, she’s by Camelot, so that will give her a chance to stay a mile-and-a-quarter or maybe further, but she does show a lot of pace. She looked very pacey on her debut and she does that at home all the time. She just toys with horses in her work. We’re very excited by her.

Rated 104, he made it third-time lucky when winning a conditions race at the Curragh in October.
He’s working very well and is ready to go. We think he has progressed a lot from two to three. He’ll be one for a Derby trial. He’ll be better on better ground. He bends his knee, but he’s probably even lighter on his feet than his brother Sir Dragonet.

Rated 120, he won the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last October.
He’s in good order and we’re happy with how he progressed over the winter. The plan is to go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with him. The experience that he got of the track in the Dewhurst can only be a help to him when he goes back there. He’s a straightforward, honest-to-God horse that has a lovely mind. He’s so relaxed, he might give himself a chance to stay beyond a mile, but he’s never looked short of pace and a mile will be our focus with him for the time being.

Rated 114, he won the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud on his final start last season.
He’s done unbelievably well over the winter and we are very happy with him. He’s grown into a big powerful horse. We got loads of experience into him last year and his mind is very good. He’s working like a horse that has enough pace for a Guineas, but his profile would suggest he could stay a mile-and-a-half. He’ll definitely prefer better ground.

Rated 118, he won a maiden at Roscommon and finished second in both the National Stakes at the Curragh and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last season.
We are very happy with his physical progress over the winter. He looks a miler to us and we’ll look to go straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with him. He shows a lot of speed in his work and I couldn’t be happier with him. The experience he got at Newmarket in the Dewhurst will stand to him when he goes back there. He wants good ground.
