David Loughnane Stable Tour
23 Feb 2021

Young trainer David Loughnane has come a long way in 12 months. He has already surpassed last season’s All-Weather Championships total of 21 winners and has broken into the top 10.

In fact, only four trainers have amassed more prize money than the young Irishman since the turn of the year - Richard Fahey, Mark Johnston, Stuart Williams and reigning champion Mick Appleby.

But it’s more about quality than quantity for the Shropshire-based handler, who is hoping to top off a productive winter with some clear chances on Finals Day at Lingfield Park on Good Friday.

Loughnane is preparing leading contender Fizzy Feet for what would be an emotional victory in the Sprint, as she carries the familiar emerald green silks of Dave Lowe who won the race with the brilliant Kachy in 2019.

He is also hoping to get Lowe’s improving filly Amber Island into the Fillies’ and Mares’ Final following her near miss in a Fast Track Qualifier at Chelmsford City, while Baby Steps may represent the same owner in the apprentice handicap.

The man from Galway hasn’t ruled out a possible crack at the Easter Classic with potential star Dark Pine, who has won both races since being snapped up as a maiden from Dermot Weld and in doing so has quickly soared to a mark of 93.

Loughnane, who is assisted by his wife Sarah, has also transformed exciting sprinter Tranchee this winter and hopes to win a heritage handicap en route to taking on the best at Pattern level on turf.

“He only just missed the cut for the dirt sprint in Saudi Arabia, but we’re not in a hurry with him,” says Loughnane. “He has an unbelievable constitution and is the type who could be campaigned overseas next year, but there’s a big pot in him at home first.”

Historic Helshaw Grange is full up with almost 70 horses in training and Loughnane has around 15 more in pre-training as he prepares to beat last year’s tally of 41, which included a first ever Group success with Santosha in the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot last July.

“We’ve worked hard to improve the quality over the past year,” says Loughnane, who also ended 2020 as the leading trainer at his local track, Wolverhampton.

“We have a great bunch of owners who let us get on with the job and it’s been a big boost for the yard to get a horse from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, who has sent us a filly called Bint Al Anood.

“She won a novice for John Gosden but needed a change of scenery and came to me on a recommendation from Adrian O’Brien, who runs Hazelwood Stud in Newmarket. The plan is to build her profile on turf this summer so Sheikh Khalifa can breed from her.”

Whilst Loughnane looks forward to an exciting summer on turf, he hopes to achieve further success on the All-Weather with these stable stars whom he spoke to Simon Mapletoft about.

This seven-year-old is back with me after spells with two other trainers and is very well handicapped on a mark of 77. He went close over 1m at Lingfield last time in a race that wasn’t run to suit us. He’s not a front runner but Luke Morris had no choice but to go on as there was no pace in the race. We have plenty up our sleeve with this fellow and I’m keen to get him back over 1m around Lingfield when they’ll hopefully go a good gallop.

This gelding came back from the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes last March with bone chips in both fetlocks, but he seems to have come back better and stronger. He won off 84 over 6f at Kempton Park in January and went close over that course and distance in a Class 2 earlier this month. He was just caught for toe that day so 7f would suit him better. He’s not really a Lingfield horse - the track there is too sharp for him - but I’m hopeful we can win again with him before the spring.

The apprentice race at Lingfield Park on Good Friday is on the agenda for this fellow, but we need to improve his rating by at least another 3lb to be sure of getting in. He may run in a 7f handicap at Wolverhampton on 12th March and I’ve already spoken to Laura Pearson about riding him if he gets to Finals Day. He just didn’t get out of bed when he ran poorly off 83 at Dunstall Park last time but I couldn’t find anything wrong with him. I’m confident he’s a 90-plus horse on his day and I think he proved that when he finished second to subsequent Group winner Lady Bowthorpe over 1m at Lingfield last summer, giving her weight.

The Sprint Final is the main target for her and it would be wonderful to win it for owner Dave Lowe after his success with his beloved Kachy a couple of years ago. We were thrilled when she finished second in the Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park last time but it was a bitter-sweet feeling because she was only narrowly beaten by Exalted Angel. This filly is still improving but is 10lb better when she can get to the rail. She’s very fast and has a low centre of gravity which gives her an advantage around those tight bends so I’ll be praying she gets drawn 1-5 on the big day. I think it will be an open Final this year. I’m not sure whether Good Effort will turn up and I’m certainly not afraid of taking on Karl Burke’s horse again.

He was rated 74 when he came to me but has progressed this winter to be a 102 horse. He’s effective over 6f and 7f and whilst we’ve considered Good Friday and the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton in March we’re probably going to wait for the grass now. Those heritage handicaps with 30 runners will be tailor-made for him. They go flat to the boards and we’ll be able to ride a race and pick them off. We might look to go to for a big pay day in the Middle East next winter after missing the cut at the Saudi Cup meeting but he’s only five and there’s a lot we can achieve with him here first.

This filly is owned by Dave Lowe, of Kachy fame, who also has Fizzy Feet and Baby Steps with me. She is well bred and improving and despite being written off at Chelmsford City, ran a blinder to be second in a Fast Track Qualifier for the Fillies’ and Mares’ Final in mid-February. Despite giving 17lb to the winner Shimmering Dawn, she has been left on the same mark (80) for finishing second, which is frustrating as we need to get her rating up to be sure of getting in on Good Friday. We’d like to get some Black Type so she will be given an entry in the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton on 13th March, but may run in a handicap there the day before instead.

This gelding has thrived since we got him, winning two races around Chelmsford City and Wolverhampton with the minimum of fuss and improving his rating from 78 to 93. I’ve got a couple of races over 1m3f at Kempton Park in mind for him and think he could be a Rosebery handicap type. We’re not even half-way through getting to the bottom off him yet and whilst I don’t think 10f around Lingfield would be his game, I might chance an entry in the Easter Classic because he’d certainly be good enough to keep that kind of company if they went fast enough. He was still a maiden after nine starts for Dermot Weld when I bought him for 27,000 gns at the horses in training sales. He was a shell of a horse but has put on 60 kilos and walks around the place like he’s 18 hands tall.

She has been away for a break with Alan Creighton since winning two novice races over 7f at Wolverhampton this winter and is back in work. She did it the hard way both times, making much of the running, and defied a penalty without knowing she’d had a race last time. I’ll continue to train her like she’s a very good filly and will look to run her once more on the All-Weather before she goes on turf. She’ll resume on a mark of 79 but everything I have seen so far tells me she’s a Black Type filly.

Rossa Ryan felt he was the winner at every stage of the race on his return to action over 12.5f at Newcastle recently but he didn’t finish it off and came back a bit stiff and sore. He’s a great big horse who has needed so much time but won over 1m3f at Kempton Park in November and was a good second at Newcastle at the back-end. He has more to offer off a lowly mark and should be back before the end of the All-Weather season.

He had some very smart form for Aidan O’Brien before joining James Given - he was placed in a Group 3 as a two-year-old - and was sent to me by his owner Peter Onslow when James gave up training recently. He’s been gelded since he last ran at Doncaster in November and will be ready to run again in a couple of weeks. He’s been very straightforward and though he’s been raced over a variety of trips I’d like to start off over 1m2f. I’m not suggesting for one minute I can improve on what Aidan did with him but I do think he’s very well handicapped off 89.
