Jonjo O'Neill Stable Tour
12 Feb 2021

Jonjo O'Neill has had a particularly prosperous 2020-21 season so far with 57 winners under his belt and £586,975 in prize money and a healthy strike rate of 14% as he mulls over big spring targets that should soon sweep him ahead of his 61 winners of 2019-20.

The chief flag bearer this term has been the Trevor Hemmings-owned Cloth Cap who showed he was on the upgrade when sweeping his rivals away with an exhilarating front running success in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in November and, bearing in mind his connections, has the Grand National at the front of his agenda for the season.

Cloth Cap could have his dress rehearsal in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster in March and the Jackdaws Castle trainer also has loftier targets in mind for his likeable mare Annie Mc with the new addition to the Cheltenham Festival - the Mrs Paddy Power Mares Chase on her radar.

The seven-year-old mare has won both the Listed Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase at Doncaster in December and the Listed Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase at Warwick this month and given her owners the Coral Champions Club a once in a lifetime mare.

All through the ranks there are winners waiting in the wings and Jonjo kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about some of his leading hopes for the coming months.

Winner of two of his 9 starts and currently rated 127 over hurdles. Finished fourth, beaten eight and a quarter lengths, to Trans Express in a handicap hurdle at Exeter (2m 2 1/2f) off a mark of 128 in December.
He is from the family of Black Jack Ketchum who we had here and was a real star for the stable. He hasn't shown his level of ability, but he won first time out at Fontwell in what was probably not too good a race. He has been down to run in meetings that have been called off and we will see where we are with him.

Winner of seven of her 15 starts and currently rated 149 over fences. Has won her last two starts in Listed Mares’ Chases beating Cut The Mustard 16 lengths at Doncaster (2m 4 1/2f) in December and following up with a five and a half length success from Zambella at Warwick (2m 4f) in February.
She won her three mare novices' chase last season, but we thought it was going to be more difficult for her this time around. We didn't think she was well handicapped stepping out of novice company but luckily there is a really good Mares’ programme that has been put together over recent years and she has come into her own. We ran her in the Old Roan then ran her at Cheltenham where she ran ok, but she has really appreciated stepping back into Mares’ company. She has been a bargain buy for her owners the Coral Champions Club and won seven out of her 15 races for them. She was impressive enough at Warwick and was strong to the line when beating Zambella and we go to Cheltenham for the new Mares’ Chase which has been added this year.

He surprised us, and he's had a winter break and will be coming back in the middle of March onwards. He won two in a row and hopefully he can keep surprising us.

He has been progressive this season and won first time out at Wetherby but probably his best run was last time out at Ascot when he finished second. We will probably head back to Ascot for another handicap hurdle over two miles and three and a half. He is a horse we are looking forward to running over fences next season.

He is one of Jim and Fitri Hay's horse and we are delighted he has won for them this season. He is a horse who does plenty in his races and travels quite strongly and with that in mind we are aiming to take him for the Coral Cup or the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. We might just run him in one of those Jumpers Bumpers as we are running out of opportunities for him to run him. He is a horse who definitely likes the better ground.

Winner of four of his 18 starts and currently rated 148 over fences. Career best performance when making all for a 10 length victory from Aye Right in the Grade 3 Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap Chase at Newbury (3m 2f) in November off a mark of 136
He did at Newbury what we had been trying to do with him for the past couple of years and it all came right there. Whether it was a combination of getting some decent ground in that race and bouncing him out in front - he just loved that. Tom Scudamore gave him a lovely ride and he jumped from fence to fence and was travelling the whole way around and it was a joy to watch. From being on a mark of 136 Cloth Cap is now on a mark of 148 which means he will get into the Grand National. The weights come out on February 16 and the plan is to run him in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster on March 6. Hopefully, we can go there and put up a good show.

Subsequently runner-up, beaten three and a half lengths, to Enqarde in a handicap chase at Ascot (3m) in January off a mark of 136.
He is a grand horse and he won well under a great ride by Jonjo at Exeter in December off a mark of 128 and ran well last time at Ascot off a mark of 136. He is high enough in the weights now, but he has been consistent horse for us and we will continue to run him in long distance handicaps.

Scored by 13 lengths from Deeper Blue on his only start in a bumper at Southwell in December.
He is another youngster of Pat Hickey's who surprised us with how easily he won in his bumper at Southwell. We are not sure what the race was worth, but he finished strongly, and we are going to let him take his chance in a listed Bumper at Newbury at the weekend if it is on and if it is rescheduled we will head there. He is one that would want a big galloping track but he's a chaser for the future.

He is one of JP's and he won last time at Bangor off a mark of 120. He was put up 6lb for that win, but I don't think it was a very good race and that's plenty for a race that fell apart. It was horrendous ground, and he may well have been the only one to go on the ground.

We don't know if nothing else went on the ground at Wetherby last time, but he ended up winning by 11 lengths which was a surprise and a big upward jump from his previous performances. We would look to run him in something similar on heavy ground under his penalty and see where we are at with him.

He has been so consistent and has never been out of the frame in four starts this season. He never runs a bad race and we have been running him over marathon trips this season. It's hard to get his head in front but he travels strongly in his races and I am sure he can continue to run consistently in these long-distance races.

He has won his last two at Bangor and Fakenham and has been entered up plenty over the past two weeks, but meeting have been off all over the place. He is in at Newbury at the weekend and he is definitely progressing over fences.

He had couple of hard races last season and at Newbury he ran into the The Big Breakaway of the Tizzards. He is still a maiden and we will look for a two and a half mile novice or maiden hurdle where he can get his head in front. Winner of six of his 26 starts and currently rated 141 over fences. Made a winning reappearance in a handicap chase at Ascot (3m) in November when scoring by a head from Wandrin Star off a mark of 137.
He has been given a bit of break. He came back and won first time out at Ascot and he wasn't able to cope with the rise in weights last time. We will bring him back for some of the staying chases in the spring.

Winner of four of his 18 starts and currently rated 152 over fences and 147 over hurdles. Returned to winning form with a three and three quarter length success from Midnight Legend in a handicap chase at Cheltenham (2m 1/2f) in December off a mark of 134 and followed up with a two and a quarter length win from Amoola Gold in a similar event at Warwick (2m) in January off a mark of 145
He is owned by the yard sponsor Martin Tedham who bought him at the Sales at the beginning of the season. He had a couple of racSe earlier in the season over two and a half at Wetherby and Cheltenham where he travelled strongly and didn't get home and we had been wanting to run him back at two miles. Since we have done that he looks a completely different horse and won his Cheltenham handicap and then followed up at Warwick. His jumping was exceptional at Warwick and he is a horse with a lot of experience for a novice. We haven't decided but he's in the Arkle and the Grand Annual and he will stay at two miles. He is going to be declared in the Betfair Hurdle and the Kingmaker at Warwick and the first preference is the Betfair Hurdle. He runs off a mark off 140 in the Betfair Hurdle and is 12lb higher over fences and it makes sense to try and run him. We think two miles is the key to him.

Winner of three of his 11 starts and currently rated 113. Scoring for the third time in handicap hurdle company this season when beating Alright Marlene a length and three quarters at Southwell (3m 1/2f) in November off a mark of 107.
He has been a real revelation this year and has won his last two and three in all. He won going from the front at Fakenham and then again at Southwell. he wants two and a half to three miles and is best on decent ground. Hopefully, he can keep on progressing.

Winner of three of his 7 starts and currently rated 133 over hurdles. Finished third, beaten six lengths, to My Drogo in the Grade 2 Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle Trial at Ascot (1m 7 1/2f) in December.
He is well bred and is from the family of Joe Mac who JP used to own. The plan would be to go for the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury if it is on and if it has to be rescheduled, he will go there. We will make a plan from there to see where we go after.

Winner of three of his 18 starts and currently rated 135 over hurdles. Gained his last success when scoring by five and a half lengths from One True King in a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham (2m 1/2f) in October off a mark of 124.
He was quite impressive at Cheltenham in a conditional jockeys’ race back in October when Kevin Brogan rode him and then followed up with a good third off a higher mark. He has been playing about a bit since then and he messed around and not gone down to the start but we've been doing a bit of work behind the scenes with him and given him a break, but he will have one run before going to Cheltenham for one of the handicaps.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 113 over hurdles. Returned to winning form with a three and a quarter lengths from Nobel Joshua in a handicap hurdle at Exeter (2m 7f) in November off a mark of 106.
He was unlucky to finish second in his first two starts at Perth and Ludlow and came good at Exeter last time when Kevin Brogan rode him. He is going to be a better horse when he goes over fences, but we will try and find another long-distance handicap for him from the middle of March onwards.

Winner of one of his 3 starts. Scored by a length and a half from Onchan in a maiden hurdle at Ludlow (2m 5f) in January.
He is the other horse Trevor Hemming kept in training up at Jackdaws. His bumper form was ok, and he is from a good family Supreme Serenade and Supreme Prince that were in training with Philip Hobbs. He made his hurdling debut at Ludlow and he surprised us a little. His jumping gradually improved as the race went on and he did well to beat another horse owned by Trevor Hemmings. We will look for something similar for him, but he is another who will be a chaser long term.

Winner of one of his 6 starts and currently rated 138 over fences. Off the mark with a five length defeat of Shanty Alley in a handicap chase at Wincanton (3m 1f) last week off a mark of 130.
He came good at Wincanton last time winning off a mark of 130. He has been put up 8lb for winning five lengths which I think is plenty. We will try and find something similar for him for his next start and we will hope he can progress, but he has been dealt no favours.

She won last time out at Warwick and she had had a couple of wind operations as she had been struggling with her wind. We don't know if she would have won if Fantastic Lady of Nicky Henderson's hadn't come down, but it goes for you sometimes. It was nice to get a win with her and hopefully she can progress as she does everything nicely at home.

He managed to get his head in front at Leicester last time and he gave the Racing Club there first winner when winning in the Sea Pigeon colours. He will carry on running in handicap hurdles and will run in a two mile four handicap towards the end of February at Wincanton or Uttoxeter.

He struggles at this time of the year and all of his winning form is on decent ground. He would be one for the summer, but he has still won five races and he is a real favourite in the yard
