Willie Mullins Stable Tour
02 Feb 2021

Willie Mullins secured his first Champion Trainer title in Ireland in 2000/01, but it has been since the 2007/8 campaign that he has taken his performance to previously unheard-of levels.

He has been crowned Champion Trainer every season since then and has continually raised the bar in terms of the record for number of winners in an Irish National Hunt season, with his current record standing at 212 winners during the 2017/18 season.

Well established as the most successful Irish-based trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival with 72 winners at the meeting, Mullins has trained a sequence of household names such as Florida Pearl, Hedgehunter, Quevega, Hurricane Fly, Faugheen and Al Boum Photo.

Willie looks to have as strong a team as ever heading into the spring festivals and he spoke to attheraces.com’s Kevin Blake about their prospects.

At this stage it looks like we’ll go straight to the Cheltenham Festival with her. The new mares’ chase has been in my mind for her all along, but I think we’ll have to consider the Mares’ Hurdle too. That will be a decision to make much closer to the time.

Our plan all along was to run in the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase, miss Christmas, then potentially run in the Dublin Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival prior to going back to the Cheltenham Festival. He has been in great shape since the John Durkan.

We got a run into him at Cork in December and he really benefited from that as our horses were all needing their first run. We were delighted with his performance at Christmas and I think he could well improve again from that. I think he’s in great shape and the Dublin Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival is his next target. We’ve had a very clean run with him this season.

He ran a great race in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting and he seems to be back to himself. The plan is to run him in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival. David Mullins has retired since, so I wonder will anyone else get on as well with him! He seems to like Leopardstown, but all the rain we are having is a worry as he’s one that would prefer nicer ground.

Himself and Kemboy just didn’t help each other in the Savills Chase, as they ended up taking each on from a long way out. We’ll probably change tactics with Melon in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup. Up to now we’ve been putting cheekpieces on him trying to get him to be more competitive over shorter trips and unfortunately for Patrick the horse just took off with him down the back in the Savills Chase. They both ended up running great races, but with different tactics we might have got a different result.

He’s in great shape. He goes for the Chanelle Pharma Irish Champion Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival and he probably won’t need to improve to run a big race. I just hope he doesn’t do what he did in the race last year and make a mistake at the first hurdle down the back which just threw him off completely for the rest of the race.

We haven’t fully decided where we are going to go with him. He could run in the Dublin Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival, but it will depend on how he works this week. Brian Cooper rode him when he ran so well in the John Durkan and he suggested we drop him back to two miles, but I ended up running him in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting and he jumped so badly early in the race that I thought it was a really good run from him to finish fifth.

He’s in great shape and the Chanelle Pharma Novice Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival is his target. We thought he’d up end over staying trips this season, so I was hugely taken with the performance he put in when winning the Grade 1 over two miles at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting. Unbeaten in two starts over fences, including an impressive victory in a novice chase at Naas.
He looks a natural chaser and found it easy to drop back to two miles at Naas last time. He jumps so well that it just thought why waste that by going two-and-a-half miles? He very much passed the test at Naas and I think he’ll have to take his chance against even better horses in the Leopardstown Arkle Novice Chase. I’d like plenty of juice in the ground for him, he’s a big unit.

I’m happy with him and am hopeful that he’ll run a lot better in the Chanelle Pharma Irish Champion Hurdle than he did at Christmas. He seemed to need the run that day. When you look back to the day he was giving Espoir D’Allen a race before falling at the last at Naas, I consider that Champion Hurdle form, we just have to get him back to that and we haven’t got back there with him yet. We’re trying to walk a fine line between keeping him sound and getting him right, but he seems to be very good at the moment.

I’ve been happy with him since his run at Christmas. He was a little bit disappointing that day. I’m not sure whether it was our tactics or that he just wasn’t right on the day, but we were expecting a much better performance than he delivered. Nothing really came to light with him afterwards. He’s been very good since his win at Leopardstown and that form is already working out well. The plan is to go for the Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors 50k Cheltenham Bonus For Stable Staff' Novice Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival.
