Patrice Quinton Stable Tour
18 Dec 2020

Patrice Quinton holds the unusual record of having lifted the last nine editions of the Grand Steeple-Chase des Flandres, Belgium’s version of the Grand National.

The French trainer, who is based not far from St Malo and who for years trained his horses in the dunes of Normandy before the construction of the Dragey-Ronthon training centre, has always enjoyed travelling with his horses and is an avid Cheltenham Festival fan.

In France, he features consistently in the top ten of trainers and makes it a habit to target the different meetings, in particular the winter meeting at Pau, where his horses are always competitive, especially in the Cross Country Chases.

Here, he kindly tells Liz Price of about some of his hopes for this winter.

Very lightly raced, was successful on his last start over 2m3f hurdle race at Angers.
This is a magnificent horse. I like him a lot. We are looking after him. I think he is very good. It was impressive how very convincingly he won at Angers. He will come to Pau where he will run maybe once or twice, but I think he is a horse for Auteuil. I would like to prepare him to go chasing at Auteuil.

4 che g No Risk At All - First Wonder
A winner at the Le Touquet over hurdles in September, he was the runner-up in a hurdle race at Strasbourg, but was pulled up on his first start in a handicap hurdle at Pau.
I like this horse. He came over from the Czech Republic. He is good looking and has a good temperament but is still lacking experience. Hence, he made a big mistake at the second last while he was going well. The mistake put him out of the race, but luckily he just got scared and not hurt, which is the main thing.
Belhom De Juilley
Belle De Juilley
Gris De Gris
6 gre g Gris De Gris - Belle De Juilley
He hadn’t run in a year and half and finished a very encouraging fourth in a 2m3f chase at Angers.
He is very genuine. He had tendon issues and has been slowly coming back to work. He needed a run when he went to Angers and we are well pleased with this first run after such a long absence. The jockey looked after him and the horse finished his race well. He will improve from that run and will now go to Pau.
Calisco De Kerser
Quadalka De Kerser
Al Namix
8 bay g Al Namix - Quadalka De Kerser
Winner of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Flandres in Belgium in August 2019, he hasn’t run since.
He won’t run this winter. I wanted to run him a few times at Pau but I don’t think I will. His main objective is the Grand Steeple-Chase at Waregem next summer.
Cosmic Power
Cosmic Collisions
7 gre g Samum - Cosmic Collisions
Runs only in Cross-Country chases and always finishes in the money in Pau, however rarely on the podium. Could only finish eighth on his first start there this winter.
His target is the Cross-Country chase for amateur riders at the end of the meeting. He falls just a bit short of being able to compete with the Cross-Country specialists at Pau. It is very technical at Pau and in my opinion the most difficult Cross-Country Chase in France.
Quizas Jolie
7 bay g Balko - Quizas Jolie
Spent last winter at Pau but runs mainly at Auteuil where he lifted France’s most important handicap over fences, the Prix du President de la Republique in the spring. Finished seventh on his last start in the Grade 1 Prix La Haye Jousselin.
I’m not sure yet what I am going to do with him. There is a chance he might come down to Pau to run in the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau in order to get him ready for his season at Auteuil. He hasn’t got many options now apart from running in all the Graded races.
Great Filly
Alberto Giacometti
7 bay g Alberto Giacometti - Great Filly
Had his last start in May 2018 when he finished third in a 2m6f chase.
He is a former good horse who was trained by Mr Nicolle. He is a nice horse, very fragile, but a nice horse. He has stamina so can run over 2m6f and further. He will go chasing in Pau this winter.
Zenita Des Brosses
7 gre f Balko - Zenita Des Brosses
Has won two Cross-Country chases at Pau in 2019 and in 2020, but fell in the Grand Cross de Pau, won by Easysland, in January. Has had the year off and following a winning reappearance in a Cross-Country chase at Agen in November, she finished fourth on her first start at Pau in December.
She will go for the Grand Cross again this year. She won on her seasonal reappearance at Agen and the other day she was ridden for the first time by Felix de Giles who liked her a lot. He said that if he had known her better, he could have finished in second.
Dur Comme Fer
Ophelie De Kerser
3 b g Crillon - Ophelie De Kerser
He has had six runs so far and has been knocking on the door in his hurdle races and his two starts over fences.
He is a bit of a late developer, but he ran very well the other day when he went chasing at Pau. He is a nice horse, and I will keep him over fences for the time being. He can go in any ground.
Eldorado De Kerser
Naomie De Kerser
Coastal Path
6 bay g Coastal Path - Naomie De Kerser
Won his first race when switched to Cross-Country chasing in May, but fell on his first start in a Cross at Pau.
He fell on this debut at Pau, but he is a nice horse and I expect him to have learnt from that and he will do better next time here at Pau. In fact, he didn’t fall, he unseated his rider on reception, but he had nevertheless made a big mistake.
Fanfaron Special
Ultra Speciale
5 bay g Gentlewave - Ultra Speciale
Fourth in the Prix du President de la République, the big handicap chase, in May, he last finished fifth in a 2m6f handicap chase at Auteuil.
He will either run in a prep race for the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau or in a handicap, but his target is the Grand Steeple-Chase de Pau.
Feu Du Large
Rapsodie Sea
5 che g Kapgarde - Rapsodie Sea
Has already been to Pau where he was placed chasing and recently finished fifth in a 2m6f chase at Auteuil.
He is a proper Auteuil horse, but will come to Pau. He will run in a chase for AQPS on the 24th. He is a nice horse with some stamina and will get better with age. He is owned by David Maxwell.
Fret D'estruval
Udine D'estruval
No Risk At All
5 noi g No Risk At All - Udine D'estruval
A winner over fences at Auteuil in November, he was just beaten in a handicap chase over 2m4f on his first start at Pau.
He is a real genuine horse who just won at Auteuil. He’s good and we have been careful with him and haven’t run him too often. He will target the handicaps. He ran really well on his first start at Pau when he was just beaten in the final yards. He was ridden patiently towards the back and came progressively to take the lead. I actually thought he would get there; it was that close. There is definitely more to come.
Gino Des Dunes
Konig Turf
4 bay g Konig Turf - Inecess
A winner of a two mile flat race at Saumur in November, he finished third in a 2m3 ½ f chase at Pau.
He ran really well last time out. He is an AQPS and is going to run in a race for that breed only next time out and then we shall see. He’s a proper horse for the meeting, but we won’t run him every three days, that’s for sure.
Gold Allen
Fleche D'or
No Risk At All
4 bay g No Risk At All - Fleche D'or
Has run exclusively at Auteil and has been placed but is still looking for a first victory. Finished ninth in a listed hurdle race in October.
He has only just joined my yard, as he was elsewhere before. He has some interesting performances to his name and I will run him over fences at Pau.
Gondor De Kerser
Saphina De Kerser
4 che g Vendangeur - Saphina De Kerser
Made his début over hurdles at Argentan in November and was the runner-up in a 2m1 ½ f hurdle race at Pau in December.
In my opinion, this is a very good horse. The way he looks, his attitude, the way he works, I like it all. And he would have been about 60% ready when he ran because he has quite the interesting story. About a year ago, we took him to work on the Fontainebleau racecourse and at the exercise hurdle he fell and broke some vertebras. We just about managed to get him to a clinic close to the racecourse and he was then kept suspended for three months. The vets thought he would never walk again, let alone race as he couldn’t keep himself upright. But he is back, he is supple, and he runs well. It’s a fabulous story. We really took good care of him as we liked him a lot as a three-year-old and so we took the risk to try and get him back on track. He will run once more in January but then we might wait for the spring at Auteuil. For me, he is a true racehorse.
Tendresse Sivola
No Risk At All
4 al f No Risk At All - Tendresse Sivola
After a year break, she was switched to Cross-Country chasing at Pau in December where she finished seventh in the 2m4 ½ f Prix Henry Ridgway.
She hadn’t run in a Cross before but she jumped perfectly. She is quite cold and needs time to get ready and we had taken off the cheek pieces for her reappearance after a year’s absence, but we will put them back on again next time out so that she is a bit more focused. We believe she can succeed in the Cross Country chases. She would not be targeting the Grand Cross as she is too young.
3-y-o b f Saddler Maker – Silverlea
Has finished fourth on each of her three starts over 2m2f hurdle races in the provinces.
That last fourth place was not bad, and she certainly has some talent, but she still needs to learn to focus.
Hyperion De Kerser
Nuit De Kerser
3 bay g Vendangeur - Nuit De Kerser
Ran twice over hurdles in the summer, finishing fifth on his second start at Vittel in a 2m1/2 hurdle race.
He is a late developer, but he will be a nice horse to follow over fences. He has lots of stamina and jumps well. He will run soon.
Otchoa Rouge
Diamond Boy
5 bay g Diamond Boy - Fidelety
A winner over hurdles , he had never been to Pau and finished fifth on his first start there this month over hurdles.
He is a former good horse, who is unfortunately very, very nervous. Things have to go right for him. We changed race tactics last time out and the jockey rode him close to the pace, but that didn’t work out. We will go back to riding him as we always did by holding him up at the back to the field. He will do the meeting at Pau and will run quite often, in order to avoid working him too much in the morning. The meeting is quite long, it goes until I think the 9th of February, so he will have opportunities.
Saint Godefroy
Astrid Weus
Doctor Dino
5 bay g Doctor Dino - Astrid Weus
winner of a chase at Pau in December last year, has since run in the provinces and was switched to Cross-Country chasing at Pau this December where he was beaten just a short head in the 2m4 ½ f Prix Henry Ridgway.
I thought he would do well in the Cross races. He won last year over fences at Pau and he absolutely needs heavy ground. As he won over fences, there are not many races he can run in, so that is why he was switched to Cross races and I believe there is more to come from him, but as I said, he needs heavy ground. I was quite taken after that run and after this performance he might target the Grand Cross de Pau.
3-y-o b f Manduro – Semiramiss
Finished third on her hurdle debut at Argentan.
She is a nice filly. She works well and will run over hurdles and fences this winter.
8 bay f Vertigineux - Vesolia
Cross-Country specialist who finished seventh behind hardened horses like Diesel d’Allier on her first start in a Cross over 2m4 ½ f at Pau this winter.
The trip was without doubt a bit too short for her. She might be just a little below the best Cross Country horses at Pau, but she is a nice mare. She will now run in the 3m4f prep race for the main Cross-Country chase, which will suit her much better. And then her main target will be the Grand Cross of Pau.
5 bay g Planteur - Zitana
Has done very well since he started running in France this autumn. Won on his first start over hurdles at Auteuil and finished third in a handicap hurdle where he gave 7.5 kilos to the winner.
He is a good horse who is going to run in January in a handicap. He finished third in a handicap at Auteuil where James (Reveley) was maybe a tad too enthusiastic. He is also owned by David Maxwell.
Ange De Juilley
Lightly raced and is expected to do really well when switched to chasing.
Fret D'estruval
A class horse who surely must be able to win his handicap chase at Pau.
Saint Godefroy
Very exciting new prospect for the main Cross Country Chases who is still improving.
Already a winner at Auteuil this year and a horse to have some fun with in the handicaps.
Gondor De Kerser
A survivor who is obviously hugely talented and could spring a big surprise over fences in the spring.
