Yannick Fouin Stable Tour
10 Dec 2020

This season, it paid to follow Yannick Fouin-trained horses in the major handicaps across France, and with forty horses pencilled in for the Cagnes-sur-Mer meeting this winter, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he added one or two more to his record. However, it is the three-year-old generation he is most looking forward to this winter.

“For one reason or another I didn’t have many three-year-old runners at Auteuil this season,” says the Maisons-Laffitte based trainer. “But I’m still very pleased how the season went as we won some nice big handicaps. As to Cagnes, I’m taking a lot of three-year-olds down there and we shall see how they go.”

On the first day of the Cagnes-sur-Mer meeting on 4 December, he saddled an astonishing fifteen runners, but had to wait for the second day of the meeting to record his first winner. Here, he tells us about a selection of horses that have already run, and others he is hoping will reveal themselves during the meeting.

Here, Fouin chats to Liz Price of about his hopes for the Cagnes-sur-Mer meeting this winter.

Droit D'aimer
No Risk At All
5 che f No Risk At All - Droit D'aimer
Has only ran twice in her career. Once in June 2019 and once in November 2020 at Fontainebleau where she as pulled up in a hurdle race.
“She hadn’t run for 500 days when she came to Fontainebleau. It was not a bad run and the jockey wasn’t too hard on her. She will run on the 9th in the Prix le Bouif, a hurdle race over 2m4f, but she might still need this race.”
Melancholy Hill
4 bay f Gemix - Melancholy Hill
Often placed and recent runner-up in a handicap hurdle at Cagnes-sur-Mer, but still looking for that elusive victory.
“She ran well on her first start at Cagnes. I am sure she can have her say in a handicap or claiming race. Over hurdles or over fences.”
Call Gregorium
4 bay g Sinndar - Aisyacall
Was placed in a hurdle race last year at Cagnes-sur-Mer and was handicap placed at Pau in the spring. Had a long break and made his seasonal reappearance in Cagnes-sur-Mer in a handicap hurdle where he finished sixth.
“He hadn’t run for a while and this was a good reappearance. He needed that race and I’m happy with the way he ran. He will run in some of the smaller races, probably a claiming race.”
4 bay g Poliglote - Dalyonne
Winner of a claiming chase during the summer at Clairefontaine, was the runner-up in a chase handicap over 2m2f.
“He ran well. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the best of runs as he was constantly shadowed by another horse and hence couldn’t relax in front. I think it cost him the race. However, he ran really well and I am very happy with that performance. Maybe he will win next time. I’m not sure yet if he will run in another handicap or in a claiming race, either over hurdles or over fences.”
Dario Mio
Maid Of Orleans
Rio de La Plata
3 che g Rio de La Plata - Maid Of Orleans
Has run twice on the Flat and finished fifth on his hurdle debut at Cagnes-sur-Mer even though he was receiving weight from stable companion Thurstan who finished more than eight lengths ahead of him in third.
“He is a very small horse with a heart bigger than himself. He was a little too far back in that race, which was a shame, as I believe he could have finished closer. But it was a good start and if he improves on that run, he will be fine.”
Duc De Guise
Terre Normande
Le Balafre
10 bay g Le Balafre - Terre Normande
Absent from the racecourse for over a year, he stunned with a very impressive reappearance at Fontainebleau where he was the runner-up in the Grande Course de Haies de Fontainebleau at the beginning of November.
“He hadn’t run for a very long time and that performance on his return was amazing. He is a super complicated fellow, but that was great and if he can go on like that, it would be perfect. But as I said, he's complicated and not quite sure yet whether I will keep him over hurdles or take him chasing.”
Enola Gay
7 bay g Fuisse - Enolaland
Formerly trained in the UK, he joined Fouin last year and had one run in Cagnes-sur-Mer where he was the runner-up in a chase over 2m3f. Won two handicaps over fences this summer at Clairefontaine and is Listed placed over fences at Auteuil.
“When he came from England he was rated quite low in the handicap which allowed us to build him up nicely. He earned 100,000 euros this season, which is great. He ran well once at Cagnes, so there is no reason why he shouldn’t do well here again. He is a good ground horse, though, so we shall see where we go with him. The Grand Steeple-Chase de Cagnes is obviously his main target, but as I said, he is ground dependent.”
Folsom Prison
Think About
No Risk At All
5 che g No Risk At All - Think About
Was the runner-up in a chase at Cagnes-sur-Mer after a break of nearly six months, following two successive victories in major handicaps at Auteuil and Compiegne.
“He hadn’t run for a while and this was his first run over the fences. And I have to say I was absolutely delighted with that performance. I am not sure if I will run him over fences again though. He might run in the big hurdle handicap on the 14th of December, the Prix de la Promenade des anglais or in a chase that same day. Obviously, he would be quite high in the handicap, but we will see.”
Hourra De Sivola
3 bay f Noroit - Gaspatir
Made her début at Cagnes where she finished fifth in a hurdle race.
“That was a good run. She had obviously never seen a racecourse and handled that first run well. I believe she will improve and win her maiden here in Cagnes.”
Vision D'etat
3 bay g Vision D'etat - Karikale
Ran once on the Flat and then ran sixth in the Prix Finot, an important race for unraced three-year-olds at Auteuil.
“His debut in the Prix Finot at Auteuil was all right. I think he is talented but his first start in Cagnes didn’t go as well as I hoped. I’m not sure what to do with him.”
Made Easy
7 bay g Stowaway - Made Easy
Formerly trained by Harry Whittington for whom he won a handicap over hurdles, he has run twice for Fouin, once over hurdles and once over fences at Cagnes-sur-Mer where he finished third after receiving 5 kilos from the winner.
“He only arrived not that long ago in my yard. I ran him in a hurdle race just to get a feel for him and was quite pleased with what I saw. I then ran him over fences here in Cagnes and he really ran well against a field of seasoned quality horses. For his first run here in Cagnes I was well pleased. Apparently, he was quite keen when he ran in England, but did well here. He can run over hurdles or fences, so we shall see where we will go with him next time out. I’ve entered him in a chase on the 14th, the Prix du Mont Vial, but as I said, I shall see how he does before making any firm decision.”
Lascar Gris
Gris De Gris
6 gre g Gris De Gris - Vicki
Had his first start for Fouin at Cagnes-sur-Mer where he finished fifth in a handicap hurdle race over 2m4f.
“He used to be trained by David Cottin and I only just got him. I changed everything, in terms of racing tactics and equipment. So he was ridden held up and we took the blinkers off him. And I thought he ran well. He will stay in that type of race and I think he can do better next time out.”
Madonna Du Berlais
Masked Marvel
3 bay f Masked Marvel - Madonna Du Berlais
Made her début on the first day of the meeting where she finished fourth, not beaten far.
“She is a light filly and I liked what I saw first time out. I wasn’t sure about taking her to Cagnes, and if she recovers well, I think she could very well win next time out.”
Mister Kimo
Monitor Closely
3 che g Monitor Closely - Kimaroyale
Pulled up on his debut as the saddle had slipped.
“This was really annoying as the saddle had slipped. He will run on Wednesday in the Prix du Col D’Allos, which is a hurdle race over 2m1½ f. He is a good horse. He is going to run against horses that are much more experienced than him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ran well.”
Monty Saga
Dolce Bambina
Toni Blue
4 bay g Toni Blue - Dolce Bambina
Has not run over hurdles yet, but was a winner on his first start after a yearlong absence in a 1 ¼ race at Pompadour. Hasn’t run since finishing second in another Flat race at Pompadour in June.
“He is a little Flat horse that I received not that long ago. In fact, he hasn’t run for me yet. I will send him over hurdles, but that first time it is really more of a fact-finding mission than anything else. He is not ready yet as he is still far too keen. But this race should bring him along and teach him a few things.”
My Maj
11 ch g Majorien - Janemarie
Was the runner-up of the Grande Course de Haies de Cagnes last year and was another Listed winner over hurdles at Compiegne in the summer. Finished sixth on his last start over hurdles at Auteuil in October.
“He is a horse for either the Grande Course de Haies again or the Grand Steeple Chase de Cagnes. He always runs well at Cagnes but is eleven now, so we will have to see how he is, if he is up for it. He wasn’t ready last time out and will come on from that. It was a difficult race as he was carrying a lot of weight, but I had to give him a run. He didn’t run that badly. Maybe he will run in a handicap in eight days time and then could go for the Grand Steeple Chase de Cagnes. He can go in any ground.”
Paradise Search
Jukebox Jury
5 bay f Jukebox Jury - Paradise Search
A winner over hurdles and fences in the provinces, she was well beaten over hurdles at Fontainebleau on her last start in November.
“She ran twice at Fontainebleau and is starting to come back to form. She is a bit tricky as she doesn’t like running in a big field. But, she should improve and I think she can do well, even if she still needs to convince me a little.”
Queen Davier
3 bay f Authorized - Qingdao
A winner on her first start over hurdles at Cagnes-sur-Mer
“She only came to me about ten days ago from the Lerner yard. She was in top form already. She won well at Cagnes despite not having had any good performances to her name. I think I might switch her to fences in eight days time. It’s a race for fillies that might suit her.”
3 che g Vatori - Zhuhai
A winner of two handicaps on the Flat this season, he finished third on his debut over hurdles on the first day of the Cagnes-sur-Mer meeting.
“His debut was very good. I was delighted to see the way he ran. I didn’t train him when he ran on the Flat and so he hasn’t been with me that long. I haven’t had that much time to school him over jumps and I think he has done really well. I have no doubt that he will improve.”
Symphonie D'anjou
4 gre g Authorized - Symphonie D'anjou
Has been placed in hurdle races but still looking for a first victory in 11 starts.
“He is difficult to assess this horse. I have the feeling that he doesn’t engage properly. It might be a mental problem. It’s definitely not ground. But he just doesn’t into the race like he should do. So I’m not sure what to do with him. I might run him in a handicap.”
Victoria Bella
Doctor Dino
3 bay f Doctor Dino - Genetiere
She made her a debut at Compiegne on the Flat and finished third on her debut over hurdles on the first day of the meeting at Cagnes-sur-Mer.
“She finished third, but I am a bit disappointed with that performance. She ran like a Flat horse and not like a jumper. I hope she recovers well and does better next time out.”
Volkov Jelois
Jenne Jelois
Vol De Nuit
4 gre g Vol De Nuit - Jenne Jelois
Listed placed over hurdles at Auteuil, won on his first start at Cagnes.
“He ran really well over hurdles at Auteuil before coming down to Cagnes, but it was always the plan to take him chasing. I’m delighted with that victory. He jumped well and I was well pleased with that performance He is my candidate for the Grand Steeple Chase of Cagnes. That is his main goal and this victory here certainly sets him up nicely. He already won here last year, so I was hoping he would be doing well again and so far so good.”
Race tactics went against him on his first start at Cagnes but should win on his next start, especially if he runs in a claimer.
Enola Gay
Stable star who won some big handicaps, and even though it will be harder now, he is more than capable of picking up another big prize.
Folsom Prison
Switched to chasing after a successful season over hurdles, he should have some fun in the handicap chases at Cagnes this winter.
Lascar Gris
Still room for improvement and should be even more competitive in a handicap next time out.
Volkov Jelois
A horse in the making with big ambitions and an engine to match.
