Emmanuel Clayeux Stable Tour
04 Dec 2020

Lockdown and Covid-19 rules meant that this year Emmanuel Clayeux preferred to remain in France with his horses, but he is very much hoping to make it back to England in time for the Cheltenham Festival.

The French trainer, who rarely misses an opportunity to raid the English Cross-Country Chases said: “Cheltenham is not just about running a horse in a race, it is about the whole package and that includes spectators. I just felt it would be strange to run a horse there with no one to cheer it on.

“The difficulties of sending grooms in these times meant that I didn’t really consider it. However, I am hopeful of bringing over the likes of Diesel d’Allier who always does well there, and Etat d’Espry who hasn’t run there yet.”

Before casting his eyes towards Cheltenham though, the Vaumas-based handler is as always sending some of his horses to Pau, including Diesel d’Allier, Etat d’Espry and also some exciting unraced three-year-olds.

Here, Clayeux chats to Liz Price of about his hopes for Cheltenham and Pau.

Arlequin D'allier
Miss Akarad
Voix Du Nord
10 b g Voix Du Nord - Miss Akarad
A winner over fences at Pau, he hasn’t run since he was pulled up in the Glenfarclas Cross-Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
This will be his final season. The problem is that he won a handicap last year and so it is very difficult to find interesting entries for him. He will run in January in Pau, but not before. He will run the prep race for the big chase and then he might run for a place in the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau. There is a slight possibility that I might then come back with him to Cheltenham to give him another go in the Cross-Country chase. I think that he can do well. Last time, I took him to Cheltenham after a busy season at Pau where he ran over fences. In fact, the Cross at Cheltenham is like a chase, but the problem was last time that he just pulled too hard when he was in front. It was my fault as I gave the jockey the wrong orders. He was too keen in front, but he jumped well and adapted easily to the jumps and I believe if he had settled, he could have been in the money. In any case, if he does come in March, he will then be retired afterwards.
Diesel D'allier
Iena D'allier
Kap Rock
7 gre g Kap Rock - Iena D'allier
Fourth at the Cheltenham festival in the Cross-Country Chase, he ran once more in a Cross-Country chase in May but was pulled up.
It’s a bit complicated with him. He hasn’t got the talent of the good Pau Cross Country specialists. He runs well fresh and I think he might run on the 8 December. He usually runs well the first two times. He looks in good form though at the moment. There is no real reason, but he does well at Cheltenham but not that well at Pau.
Dom Prestige
Queen Prestige
Kap Rock
4 bay g Kap Rock - Queen Prestige
A runner-up on his hurdle debut in October, he unseated his rider on his last start in a hurdle race at Compiegne.
He is a very good horse. His debut was very good and then the other day he stupidly lost his rider. I like him.
Ecume Atlantique
Force Atlantique
6 bay g Satri - Force Atlantique
A winner of a couple of chases at the beginning of the season at Lyon, he was pulled up on both of his last two starts.
I am a bit at a loss with him at the moment. He loves Lyon, where he did well in the spring. But he didn’t run convincingly at Auteuil and I might take him to Pau, but I am wondering if he is able to improve. I wanted to take him to England, to Newbury, as he is a very big horse, but with Covid I couldn’t come. I am still going to look at the English programme, but for the time being he will go to Pau.
Elevee Pour Gagner
6 bay f Tirwanako - Noisillette
A triple cross-country chase winner in the provinces this year, she was the runner-up in a cross-country chase at Lignieres last time out.
She will run only once at Pau, as she is in form. She didn’t take to Pau last year and I am not sure if she just didn’t adapt to the fences or if there was another reason. So, I’m going to give it another try.
Coastal Path
6 che g Coastal Path - Platine
Listed placed at Pau in the winter, he hasn’t quite managed the step up in class. Finished second in a 2m3f hurdle race at Fontainebleau last time out.
He will run over hurdles at Pau. He ran well last time out at Fontainebleau. Maybe I will keep him over hurdles. He broke his withers when he was four and I have the impression that he suffers a little when he jumps over fences. He doesn’t seem to finish his races as well as he does when he jumps over hurdles. He seems less bothered then.
Etat D'espry
6 bay g Muhtathir - Sably
Cross-Country specialist who won on his last two starts at Compiegne, including a Listed.
He will probably run in a prep race for the main Cross-Country chase at Pau. And if he adapts to the fences, he will probably also run in the big Cross-Country chase at Pau. I think I might also bring him to Cheltenham. He doesn’t have a lot of experience, but he is a fast learner. He is a late developer and has improved a lot this season. He is stronger and has filled out a lot.
Saddler Maker
5 bay g Saddler Maker - Oddy
A winner over fences at Pau last season, he was last seen finishing fourth in a 2m3f hurdle race at Fontainebleau.
He will run this Saturday in a hurdle race at Pau, which will set him up nicely for a chase in January. The problem with Pau is that there are lots of races for lower tier horses and he has won at Auteuil, so there really is only one chase for him to run in. But it should prepare him for the Auteuil season at the beginning of March.
Valle D'ossau
5 bay f Cokoriko - Valle D'ossau
Made her debut at Pau in the winter. Still a maiden but was the runner-up in a 2m3 ½ f chase at Dieppe in June.
She will go back to Pau this winter. She is still looking for a first victory. She is often placed, but as I said, she still hasn’t won.
Galante D'arthel
La fee d'arthel
4 bay f Cokoriko - La fee d'arthel
A winner over fences and a Cross-Country Chase, she fell on her last start at Auteuil in a 2m6f chase.
She didn’t have a lot of chance last time out at Auteuil where she was going well when she fell. She will go to Pau. I don’t know yet where she will run, but seeing that she has won over fences and a Cross-Country Chase, she might do both. She was a late developer who needed some time, but she is doing well now.
Gentle Mag
Gris De Gris
4 bay g Gris De Gris - Katerinette
Won his last three starts over hurdles and fences.
He is an interesting contender. I don’t know yet, but I might run him in a Cross-Country chase as he jumps like a cat. I’m not going to be rushed. He has won three times and we will wait for January to see where he will go. He will either run over fences or in the Cross-Country Chase as he is a terrific jumper.
4-y-o b g Khalkevi – Mexcala
He had a few leg problems last year so that is why he hasn’t run yet. I like him a lot, but it’s going to be difficult as he is disadvantaged compared to the rest of his generation. If he can make up the lost time it would be great, but we are not there yet.
Glace Des Mers
Saddler Maker
4 bay f Saddler Maker - Padie
Won over hurdles at Auteuil in September and then went chasing. Fell on her last start in a 2m6f chase at Auteuil.
She will go to Pau for the first time. She fell at the second last at Auteuil last time out, but she is a good filly. She needs to relax and learn how to breathe. I think at Pau she will win her chase without a problem. She could also be a filly that might go to England for the mares’ races. She will be tougher after the winter.
No Risk At All
4 bay f No Risk At All - Savigny
Twice the runner-up in a 2m2 ½ f chase at Pau in the winter, she hasn’t run since falling in a chase at Compiegne in March.
I am not sure when she will run. Maybe towards the end of the meeting at Pau. She had a breathing issue and she has only been back in training for a short while and I am not sure when she will be ready.
Haie Verte
3-y-o b f Saddler Maker – Ulve
She is by Saddler Maker, like Apple’s Jade and Apple’s Shakira and I’m finding the same characteristics in the sense that she is tough and a little fighter. She is very professional in everything she does. She looks like her sire. She will run once on the flat before running over hurdles in January.
3-y-o b g Fuisse – Toscane
He is an interesting horse. He will make his debut at Pau. He seems to have a lot of speed. He is the full brother to a horse that I had a long time ago who was extremely difficult. This one is not quite as difficult and if he can relax, I think he could be a very good horse. But I have to see him in the afternoon, so if he runs well once or twice in Pau, I will keep him for Auteuil. He is one of the three-year-olds I like a lot.
Gris De Gris
3 gre f Gris De Gris - Tamise
A winner of a 2 ½ m flat race at Lyon, she was then the runner-up in a Group 1 race for AQPS horses at Saint-Cloud.
She has run three times and ran very well. She will not go to Pau, but I will keep her for the spring at Auteuil. She is the sister of Ebonite. She is very good.
3-y-o Lauro – Voltera
Ran twice over hurdles with not much success.
He has disappointed us a bit. He is very big and needs lots of encouragement. I have entered him in a chase for three-year-olds at Pau and we shall see how he does.
Hors Piste
3-y-o b f Kapgarde – Valgardena
She is a nice filly who seems to have some potential. She will go down the normal route of running in a flat AQPS race before running in a hurdle race.
Joly And Bach
Joly Berengere
4 bay g Bach - Joly Berengere
Won his last two starts, one over fences and one over hurdles in the provinces.
He will run tomorrow. He has won two smallish races so we shall see how he does at Pau. He has some potential.
Joly Heritiere
3-y-o b f Network – Joly Coeur
She will run on Saturday. She also looks promising.
Lucky Net Love
Line Lovely
7 che g Network - Line Lovely
Cross-Country Chase specialist who is hardly every out of the first three. Won a cross at Lyon last time out.
He will run at the end of December in a race where he will have to carry quite a bit of weight. I am not sure if he can compete with the good Cross-Country chasers of Pau, but I will have to give it a try. He is slowly improving, but he is not the easiest of customers. He has a bit of character. The jockey needs to be in form, as well as the horse and it is not always easy to have both in form on the same day
4 bay g Pastorius - Marny
A good performer on the flat last year, he won when he was sent over the fences at Vittel in the summer and has since won another chase at Lyon.
He was real flat horse who found it difficult to relax, so it took a while before he was able to win over jumps. He will run in a chase I think around the 20 December at Pau. I will see if he takes to Pau, but he won’t run before the end of the month. He is not very easy.
Net Lady
Dame De Treve
8 bay f Network - Dame De Treve
Ran three times at Pau in the winter and finished third in the Listed Grand Cross-Country Chase of Pau.
She will make her seasonal reappearance at Pau this Saturday. She hasn’t run because we like to keep her for Pau where she always performs well. This will be her final meeting before she will go to stud.
Nuits Premier Cru
Fee Magic
Buck's Boum
8 bay g Buck's Boum - Fee Magic
Listed placed over fences in the provinces, he finished fifth in a handicap chase at Fontainebleau last time out.
He will run once at Pau, maybe twice. He is a horse that needs good ground, so when it starts to rain a lot, it will become difficult to find him a race. I’m not sure yet what I will do with him. He adapts himself to the jumps very easily, which he showed when he finished fourth in a Listed hurdle race at Cheltenham a few years ago. Maybe I might even bring him back to England. I shall see. In fact, I don’t really have a fixed target in mind for him at the moment.
Dom Prestige
Still lacking experience and simply unlucky when he lost his rider last time out, but sure to improve.
Etat D'espry
Promising Cross-Country chaser who is slowly coming up through the ranks and should do well at Cheltenham.
Glace Des Mers
Jumps well over fences and should confirm her potential when she goes to Pau.
Haie Verte
A promising youngster who has all the right attributes to make it to Auteuil.
A sister to hugely talented chaser Ebonite, she is one to follow when racing starts at Auteuil in March.
Net Lady
Pau specialist who has been kept for the meeting and must surely be able to go out with a bang before retiring to stud.
