David Cottin Stable Tour
25 Nov 2020

The year 2020 has been difficult in many ways, but that hasn’t stopped David Cottin’s from enjoying an extremely successful season.

Only in his third season training, Cottin bagged his first Cheltenham festival winner when Easysland lifted the Glenfarclas Cross Counry Chase from favourite Tiger Roll and he has just celebrated a Grade 1 victory at Auteuil when the very exciting Le Berry lifted the Prix Maurice Gillois, the Grand Steeple-Chase for four-year-olds.

He is also getting close to recording his 100th winner of the season and his stable has grown from 90 to nearly 130 horses since last year.

“Yes, I had a very good season,” confirms David Cottin. “And it is not over yet. I still have a couple of runners on the 29th of November, the final big jumps meeing at Auteuil and then it’s all about Pau, where I am taking up to 50 horses.”

While the JP McManus owned Easysland is not on the list of those that spend the winter in Pau, he could still travel down for a day before trying to defend his title at Cheltenham.

Here, David Cottin tells Liz Price of about his hopes for the final big jumps meeting at Auteuil, his runners at Pau and the horses he would like to see compete at the Cheltenham Festival.

All Horses
No Risk At All
6 bay g No Risk At All - Seraglio
Never out of the first two this season, he was beaten only a head in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Compiègne on his last start.
He will go to Pau where his main target is the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau. He will start the meeting with a hurdle race to prepare him for the big race. He enjoyed a really good season and was never out of the first two. This will be the first time that he will go to Pau.
Anita Du Berlais
Chica Du Berlais
3 bay f Martaline - Chica Du Berlais
A winner on her debut over the fences in Dieppe this summer, she then finished fourth in the 2m 1 ½ f chase Prix Kargal at Auteuil.
She will go to Pau and will be prepared for the three-year-old steeple chase and then she has the Prix Antoine de Palaminy, the chase for four-year-olds in January as a target.
Kap Rock
4 bay g Kap Rock - Volhynie
He lifted a Listed hurdle race at Pau very easily at the end of January this year and has been relatively lightly raced this season.
He does Pau really well and his target will most likely be the Grande Course de Haies.
Cobra De Larre
Discover D'auteuil
8 bay g Discover D'auteuil - Camivilla
Finished an excellent third in the Group 3 chase Prix Troytown, a prep race for the Grand Steeple-Chase, in March. Was last seen winning a hurdle race at Nantes.
He is going to run in the Prix La Haye Jousselin on the 29th of November. He finished third in the Troytown at the beginning of the year, so he deserves to run in that race. He has improved tremendously since he has been with us. He can’t run in handicaps anymore and I ran him at Nantes over hurdles, as there was not much else for him to run in. He will now go to into that race fresh, he loves the heavy ground and the longer trip, so we are hoping for a good run.
Iroquoise Ii
7 che g Ballingarry - Iroquoise Ii
Lightly raced this season. He has only had two starts and was beaten into third by stablemate Ajas on his last start in the 2m2f chase Prix le Parisien.
He will go down to Pau. Just like Ajas, his main target will be the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau, which takes place towards the end of January. He likes soft ground.
Island Du Frene
6 b g Gentlewave - Island Du Frene
The winner of the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, he made his reappearance in the November Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham where he ran a bit rusty and finally finished fourth.
He needed this race and he was giving away a lot of weight. And he definitely didn’t have the soft ground that he needs. He has come home fine and the plan is to come back to Cheltenham in December. His main target obviously remains the race during the Festival. He could also run in the Grand Cross de Pau, a race he lifted last year before coming to Cheltenham. He won’t be doing the meeting but will stay in Chantilly.
Edward D'argent
7 gre g Martaline - Roquine
Hugely talented chaser who used to be trained by Guillaume Macaire and who has been absent from the racecourse since finishing third to On The Go in the 2018 edition of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris.
I have had him now for a couple of months. He had a tendon injury and was forced to stop for a while. He is a very powerful horse and if his legs don’t give him any grief, he is a real machine. Physically already he is very impressive. He is a great horse and will make his reappearance over hurdles towards the end of the meeting as his main goal is obviously the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris next year. He seems to have retained his enthusiasm and, in any case, he is still very young.
Elegant Star
Victoria's Star
6 che f Kapgarde - Victoria's Star
Enjoyed a hugely successful meeting at Pau last year where she won three Cross Country Chases from four starts.
I do like Cross Country Chases. The first one is already on the first day of the meeting and the next prep race is around Christmas time and the final prep race for the Grand Cross de Pau is in the middle of January. We have three prep races for the Grand Cross de Pau, which is run at the beginning of February and which will be Elegant Star’s target this year. She did really well last year in Pau, where she won three consecutive Cross Country chases. This year, she will run a minimum of two prep races before the big one. I like her a lot.
5 bla f Yeats - Tieville
Spent last winter chasing at Pau but was this month switched to the Cross Country course at Durtal where she finished third.
She has taken to the Cross Country jumps and will be targeting the Cross Country races for young horses.
5 bay g Network - Nashkille
Made his debut on the Cross Country course last year at Pau where he finished third. He is still looking for a first victory in his career.
He will be targeting the Cross Country chases for young horses.
5-y-o ch g No Risk At All – Belisama
Has won his last two starts over the Cross Country fences.
He will be going for the Cross Country chases in Pau. He has won his last two starts on the Cross Country course at Le Pin Au Haras and at Angouleme.
Something Fine
9 che g Barastraight - Something Fine
Forthing has been running exclusively at Pau for the last two years. After winning several races in 2019, at the beginning of this year he went through a rough patch when he fell in his prep race for the Grand Prix de Pau where he was pulled up.
Forthing always goes to Pau, but his meeting last winter did not go to plan at all. He has won the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau twice in his career and that is what he will be targeting once more. He seems much better to me now than he was in January.
Green Dragoness
Nathalie Blue
4 bay f Enrique - Nathalie Blue
A winner on her debut over hurdles at Compiegne in May.
She won well at Compiegne and will have a start over hurdles at the beginning of the meeting in Pau, but she will then be switched to chasing. She should do well. She likes heavy ground. She is very good.
Honey Wolf
3-y-o b f Pether’s Moon – Who’s Afraid
I think she is a very good filly. She is a good jumper and has a good mind. She is very cool and will make her debut at Pau. I expect her to do well first time out already.
Mind Of War
3-y-o b g French Fifteen – Caribena
He too is a very good colt and will make his debut at Pau. He can go in any ground.
3-y-o b g Muhtathir – Lady Chloe
He is a very good colt and I expect him to win on his debut.
Paul's Saga
6 gre f Martaline - Humoriste
A talented mare who has really come into her own this season and caused a bit of an upset when she beat the “unbeatable” champion L’Autonomie in the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil.
autumn, we actually briefly considered her going to stud, but after she won her last two races that thought was shelved for the time being. We were obviously surprised by that result and the cheekpieces certainly seemed to have had a great effect on her. She is going to run in the Grand Prix d’Automne on the 29th of November and then we probably look for a race in the UK where she could run before the Festival. But we don’t know exactly yet what we will do.
Prince Ali
7 al g Kapgarde - Novolae
Absent from racing since June 2017. He was last seen beating the Willie Mullins trained Bapaume in the Grade 1 Prix Alain du Breil, the summer hurdle race for four-year-olds.
He was a Grade 1 winner when he was trained by Guillaume Macaire. He hasn’t run in a long time, just like Edward d’Argent and he is going to Pau to get racefit. He will make his seasonal reappearance at Pau, but obviously, he is more a horse to follow next year. He is a very good horse.
Reliable Son
Hot Fudge
Reliable Man
4 gre g Reliable Man - Hot Fudge
A winner on the flat, he finished fourth in a 1 ½ m Listed at Nantes.
He is a talented horse who will make his debut over jumps at Pau. I expect him to win on his first start.
3-y-o b g It’s Gino – Soniador
He is a very nice three-year-old who hasn’t run yet. He will make his debut at Pau and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won first time out.
Swiss Guard
La Garde Royale
3 gr g Martaline - La Garde Royale
Only beaten a head on his debut over hurdles at Auteuil in October.
Swiss Guard was a good second on his debut at Auteuil and he will go down to Pau where his main target is the Prix Antoine de Palaminy, which is the Grand Steeple Chase for four-year-olds at Pau. He is from the same family as Laterano, which is a great family. He is a really good jumper, a really nice three-year-old who should enjoy a good meeting.
Tombee Du Ciel
In Caso Di Neve
4 bay f Zanzibari - In Caso Di Neve
A winner on her chasing debut at Fontainebleau in October, she was giving a lot of weight away on her second start at the same track when she finished fourth.
I don’t have any specific target for her in mind, but I think she will have a good meeting. We like her, she is easy to ride and should do well at Pau.
Zoffany Bay
Trois Graces
6 bay g Zoffany - Trois Graces
Was trained in the UK where he mainly ran in handicaps on the all-weather. Since moving to Cottin, he has won two claiming races.
have run him in claiming races and he has won two for me, but he really is a horse for the Grande Course de Haies (the main hurdle race of the meeting). Yes, he’s quite capable.
Has enjoyed a great season over fences and if he takes to Pau, he should be able to add further to his growing CV.
A bit rusty first time out, he is certain to come on from that last run at Cheltenham and should be able to defend his crown at the Festival.
Edward D'argent
Incredibly talented chaser who is coming back after a long absence due to injury and who should win in Pau based on his class alone.
Elegant Star
Proved nearly unbeatable in the Cross Country chasers for younger horses at Pau. Will be harder now, but not impossible.
Promising Cross Country prospect they should have lots of fun with this winter.
Paul's Saga
Created a bit of an upset when she beat Auteuil Champion l’Autonomie and remains an exciting mare for the upcoming hurdle championship races.
Swiss Guard
Promising three-year-old who knows how to jump and has justified ambitions this winter.
