Pia & Joakim Brandt Stable Tour
21 Aug 2020

Swedish born Pia Brandt has been a firm fixture in Chantilly for many years and so has her husband Joakim, who still rides their horses when they travel around the world to participate at the likes of the Meydan Carnival, the Saudi Arabia races or when they come to Britain.

For the first time though, he now officially features on the card as a trainer, albeit not by himself but together with Pia. “Yes,” she laughs. “We are now both officially training the horses, but obviously we have always been working together.”

Like everyone else, they had to patiently sit through a couple of months of lockdown, but Brandt says: “It was actually ok. In fact, some of our horses had been sick and wouldn’t have run anyway, so it wasn’t all that bad. At least they got their timing right!”

The horses are now back on track and after supplementing Farfar in the Group 1 Prix Morny this Sunday, the Brandt team is preparing itself for a busy autumn.

Here, they kindly talk to Liz Price for attheraces.com about the horses they are hoping to run in the next few weeks.

Formerly trained in Germany, he is a proper sprinter who was recently the runner-up in a five and half furlong Class 2 race at Deauville.
We bought him out of a claimer, not that long ago actually, and I think he’s only been with us for six months or so. We liked the look of him. He is a very good-looking horse, with a lot of power. Unfortunately, he’s had a lot of issues so that is why he has these ups and downs. He is going to run in a big handicap on Sunday and he seems to be in really good form at the moment. He ran very well last time and we love that he will get his soft ground in the big handicap for sprinters. He loves soft ground. He would be so much better if he didn’t have those issues. I think he will be an autumn horse.

Group 2 winner over the Cup distances and Group 1 placed, he was last seen finishing second in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil where he was just held by the Ed Dunlop-trained Red Verdon.
He will have a couple of races still this year. He will go for the Prix Gladiateur and then the Royal Oak. And then he will have a long break until the next season. I think with going to Hong Kong and then Saudi Arabia, he has travelled a lot and this year has been a bit different than other years. Travelling to hot countries has been tough on him. He usually has a long break. But he still gives everything. He is very straight forward and a lovely horse to train. He is in great shape and he was supposed to run in the Prix Kergorlay, but with the rain coming we decided to wait and take him to Longchamp for the Gladiateur.

Won three races this winter on the all-weather over 7½ furlongs. Finished fifth at Deauville in July on his last start on the all-weather.
He is a lovely horse. He came to us with a rating of 25 (French rating) and is now rated 36.5. He’s been good for us. He loves the all-weather. We shall try and win another quinté with him. There are plenty of all-weather races coming up in the winter.

Extremely consistent sprinter over five to six furlongs who is always in the money. Was the runner-up in a handicap at Deauville over 6½ furlongs on the all-weather on his last start.
He is a very good-looking horse, a lovely Shamardal. He is also a horse who had leg problems so he will never be able to go up in class, but he is super consistent. I hope he will still win us some more races like the handicaps he has been running in. In fact, 5½ furlongs is best for him. If you could find us some more races over that trip that would be great.

A good consistent stayer who just won a 2 mile handicap at Deauville.
He is a very consistent performer. He did really well last time, he always gives his all. He needs the longer trip, but has now gone up quite a bit in the handicap. So we shall see if he can manage a step up in class next time out.

Very in and out sprinter. Won the Group 2 Prix du Gros Chêne over 5 furlongs in May and then was nowhere in the 6 furlong Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis that was won by the Charlie Appleby-trained Royal Crusade.
He is a real sprinter over 5 furlongs. He is a very big horse who had it very easy as a three-year-old when he won everything in Budapest. And then he had to learn how to race. I think spending the winter in Dubai did him good. He didn’t do that well, but he learnt a lot, he has more experience now. I don’t think the 6 furlongs work for him. He does too much. His best performance is over 5 furlongs, so we are going back to that. He is a very fast horse and with age I am hoping he can do better.

Extremely well-bred filly, she is Group 3 placed but has struggled this year in Listed company and was last seen finishing sixth behind future Yorkshire Oaks runner-up Alpinista in a Listed at Salisbury.
She is giving us a little bit of a headache. I’m going to try her over longer trips. I think it was too short for her last time. She looked very well, but once they quickened she said no thank you. She came home nice and sound so the goal is to find some proper black type. So far she is not as good as her mother. She has a lot of black type but I’m looking for the big one. I’m hoping that the longer trip will suit her.

Has had three starts this season and won a conditions race over 12f at Strasbourg in June.
I think she could win a handicap with that rating. She is a small filly, but you never know. She has stamina and I will try and place her in another one of those races. Unfortunately she got sick the other day when I had found the perfect handicap for her, which was for fillies only, but I’m sure I can find one for her.

Winner of the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud last season, he has been struggling this year.
I’m getting lots of grey hair with him. He will come back at the end of the September in Listed race. After his win in a Group 1 race we wanted to go to Dubai and prepared him for it, but then Covid-19 came. He was a really strong two-year-old but he took a while during the winter to improve, so we are now going to try him on softer ground and hope that he can show again what he showed last year.

Won a Listed on her first start this year and then finished fifth in the Prix de la Grotte behind Tropbeau.
She won her Listed before lockdown. She then ran in a Group 3 in heavy ground and she got a splint, so she hasn’t run since. I am hoping to get her back on to the all-weather track towards the end of the season with a view of taking her to Dubai for the Carnival. If the Carnival takes place obviously

Won her maiden on her second start and has since been tried at Listed level over the mile.
I think we will wait for soft ground for her, to get her some black type. She had a good start to her career, but then she didn’t like the firm ground at Saint-Cloud. She is a different filly with some give in the ground, so I think we will keep her for the autumn.

Finished last in a very good conditions race against more experienced horses on his debut at Chantilly.
He is a nice colt who is running on the 22nd of August. On his debut he ran against horses that had already run and he also ran over a trip that was too short for him. But I think he will be a nice horse to follow in the autumn, especially over longer trips. He galloped on softer ground this year, but he still needs to learn how to leave the stalls a bit faster.

The runner-up on his debut in a 6½ furlong race on the all-weather at Deauville.
We supplemented him for the Prix Morny because there is only one Prix Morny a year and the owner was keen to run him. It will be a tough ask, but who knows what can happen. It is a bit of a fact-finding mission. I do think that he might turn out a dirt horse, but again, we shall see.

Made quite a splash when he won his maiden on his second start at Clairefontaine over seven furlongs in June.
He is going straight for the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. He had a shin problem after winning at Clairefontaine. He is back in training and we are preparing him for Longchamp. He is awesome. He is a real machine, but the machine has to work, so he will go straight for the Lagardère. I rather get him there one hundred percent than run him before half fit just to get a run into him
