Christophe Ferland Stable Tour
13 Aug 2020

Christophe Ferland’s season is going well so far, in fact he currently has as many winners as he had last year and that despite no racing for two months.

Based in Deauville for the month of August, he has been very satisfied with his runners, especially his two-year-olds, which he will now be preparing for the return to Paris in September.

“Yes, I have had as many winners at this time of the year as last year, even though we missed two months of racing because of the pandemic,” he says.

“I shouldn’t be saying it, but I really appreciated having a break from racing, as it allowed me to relax a bit. The seasons now are full on all the time and mentally it was nice to have a bit of a break.”

Here, the La Teste de Buch trainer tells Liz Price of attheraces.com about the older horses that are still going to target some of the big prizes in Deauville and his exciting two-year-old generation that will be taking a step up in class at the beginning of September.

A 1 ¼ m specialist, she finally won her listed at the beginning of August at Clairefontaine.
She is a great mare. She had a long break at the age of four and has come back in great form. She produced a great performance last time out and we are now going to have a bit of fun and run her in the Prix Jean Romanet. She is a filly who has taken a long time to grow. In fact, she was still growing last year and that was the reason we decided to give her a break. She went to the paddock and then did some pre-training, which is not as hard as the proper training. And she came back looking magnificent and has been thanking us ever since for our patience. She is in really good form. She is a listed winner now but if she could be Group 1-placed before she goes to stud, that would be fabulous.

Twice a winner already this year over the mile and 9 ½ furlongs. Was bumped up considerably by the handicapper after his last victory on the all-weather at Deauville.
He is a brilliant horse. He is a heavy ground horse, so he hasn’t had a lot of luck this year because of Covid-19, as he missed out on racing in March and April when the ground was soft. That was the reason why I ran him on the all-weather, which suits these kind of horses. He ran really well, as expected, but was heavily penalised by the handicapper for that race. So, we will wait a bit now. Anyway, as he needs heavy ground, I’m sure we will find a race for him towards the end of the year, especially as he runs well fresh.

Won two of his starts this season already and is Group 2-placed over the longer distances. A Cup horse in the making.
He is a great horse. Unfortunately, Covid-19 looks likely to put an end to my ambitions, as he is a horse that I would like to take to the Melbourne Cup and that looks certainly very difficult this year. We shall see, we are organised, but who knows what will happen between now and then. In any case, he is in great form and will run in the Prix Kergorlay. He worked the other day and the horse looks good. If we can’t run in the Melbourne Cup, we will find other targets for him. He is a horse I like a lot and I think he is one of the best stayers in France.

Had an early start to the season in Cagnes-sur-Mer and has been climbing the ladder since. Was the runner-up to the Archie Watson-trained Maystar in the Listed Prix Moonlight Cloud over 6 furlongs.
This is a nice horse. He ran very well the other day and just had that British raider finish in front of him, who was just that little bit tougher and more experienced. This was his first attempt at Listed level, and I think he will be a good sprinter. He will run in the Prix du Pin -Palais Royal in September and we shall see how he will do.

Placed third in a Listed over 1 ½ m, she finished tailed off when she stepped up to Group 2 level in the Prix de Psyche, which was won by Raabihah.
She goes in heavy ground and I thought that 1 ¼ m would suit her, but actually, she is better suited by further. She is still growing and needs to fill out a bit. She will be one to follow next year

Hugely consistent, he won his Class 2 race in May and then was the runner-up in the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe over 11 furlongs where he was only beaten a length by the Fabrice Chappet-trained Gold Trip.
He had a little break. He didn’t handle the heat too well, so he got time off. He is a bit of a late developer. He is a very interesting horse that we need to be patient with. We need to let him grow up. I think if we are too hard with him now it will work against us. I believe he has a lot of talent and should develop into a nice four-year-old.

After winning a listed, she was tried at Group 3 and 2 level last year without success. She recently ran well in a Class 2 race at Deauville over seven furlongs.
She won a little listed at Vichy last year, which was great, as her owners are breeders. However, she then found it very difficult to take the next step up. She is a bit peculiar, as it took her a long time to come into herself again this year. She ran well the other day and looks like she is finally back, and I probably will run her in a big handicap over the straight at the end of the meeting. I think she depends on the seasons, but she is really coming into her own and I think she will be able to perform over 6 furlongs on the straight course.

Winner of the Group 3 Prix La Force on his first start this season, he then ran third behind the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Port Guillaume in the Group 2 Prix Hocquart. He couldn’t go with the winner, but only just missed out on second place.
He ran well in the race where he found himself a bit too far behind on a fast track and he was then hampered when he came for his run. I think he could have been a good second, but that is racing. But he ran well, and he will now go for the Grand Prix de Paris. He has won a Group 3, so this is the logical step for him. I would be surprised if he goes all the way to the Arc, but we shall see after the Grand Prix de Paris.

Made her debut this June and has been placed in three maiden races over 1 ½ m.
She is an interesting filly, a very late developer. She is starting to come to hand at the moment and I think she will win her race very soon. She was beaten by a good filly the other day at Vichy and I think this will be a filly to follow next year when she is four-years old. I think she will do well. She is the same type as Velma Valento. Maybe not that good, but a filly who will get better with age.

Tried at Group 1 level at the end of the season, he has had two starts this year and was last seen finishing second in a mile Listed at Toulouse.
Unfortunately, he suffered a fracture when he produced a fabulous run to finish second at the start of the season. He received surgery and then went to the paddock and he will come back soon. Everything looks positive and we shall see where he comes back. In any case, he is a good horse.

This is a colt who has some talent, but he didn’t run very well the other day. So, we decided to geld him. He will now be prepared for the autumn and will be a horse for Cagnes-sur-Mer. He will be able to run in many races there, so that is the aim.

After being placed twice, she recently won her maiden over 6 furlongs at Deauville.
She is a superb filly. She is pencilled in to run the Prix Eclipse in September. She is also entered in the Prix d’Arenberg, but we shall see. I have entered her in some Group races in September. She has a lot of speed from a speed family. I liked the way she won last time out, coming through the field after having patiently waited towards the back. She is an interesting filly.

He is a nice little horse, very tough. He is not that impressive in size, but he is well put together. He is a horse that will go on for a long time. He was beaten the other day, but we were happy with that performance and I am delighted to be training for Mr Corbani who is such a nice owner.

A winner on her debut, she was only just beaten into second in the Listed Criterium du Bequet at La Teste de Buch.
She is a brilliant filly. She won her first race really easily and then was the runner-up in a listed. She is in great form and has just arrived in Deauville. We will try and prepare her for the Group 2 Prix du Calvados. The Prix Morny seemed a bit too smart for her and anyway, she didn’t have an entry in that race. I think anything between 6 and 7 furlongs suits better. So, we shall try and run that and see how she does. Anyway, she seems in fine form.

After a disappointing start, she has won both of her last two starts over 7 furlongs and is steadily climbing the ladder.
This is an interesting filly who has a lot of scope. She is quite big and has a lot of power. Her debut was not impressive, even though she had worked ok. So, I put blinkers on her as she has a bit of a temperament. It was the right thing to do as she won both of her last starts. She will now run in a listed race over the mile at Craon in September.
