Alain de Royer Dupre Stable Tour
04 Aug 2020

2020 was going to be Alain de Royer Dupre’s final season of a career that has spanned over five decades and that has produced outstanding champions like Darshaan, Dalakhani, Zarkava, Pride, Vazirabad plus countless others.

However, well before Covid-19, he was already asked to stay on one more year and after a beginning of the season that was all but productive, the Chantilly-based handler is only too happy to continue, especially since he has a very nice bunch of promising three-year-olds in his yard.

“I have reduced the number of horses in training considerably, but I have quite a number of three-year-olds, which needed some time but that are now showing some real potential,” he explains. “In fact, for the first time in my entire career, I have entered a horse in the Arc before it had its first run, which I honestly believe I have never done before.”

The horse in question is the three-year-old filly Valia, owned by HH Aga Khan, who is currently unbeaten. She is supposed to run in Deauville during the month of August, but Royer Dupré warns: “I don’t think I will be having too many runners at Deauville, as a lot will depend on the ground. We have had a lot of racing there already and the people who are looking after the track are doing the best they can, but I will make my decisions closer to each race.”

While he is concerned about the ground, a number of his horses are pencilled in for the meeting and here he tells us Liz Price of attheraces.com who to look out for during the month of August on Sky Sports Racing.

She won her Tiercé handicap last year and since struggled in that company. She finished fourth last time out in a Class 2 handicap over 1m 2 ½ f at ParisLongchamp.
She won her handicap last year and she won’t be without a chance next time. I think she might run in a handicap at Deauville around the 15th of August. She was lacking at Listed level, but she is not without ability.

Lightly raced filly, who apart from her seasonal reappearance this year has never been out of the first two. She recently won a listed over 1m 2 ½ f at Chantilly.
She won her Listed very easily the other day. She hasn’t run very often and has never really put a foot wrong. I will enter her in the Prix Pomone and in the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet for fillies, as I think she is a filly who could do well there. It will depend on the ground. She wants good ground. She won twice as a three-year-old and then she ran in very soft ground in a listed race. She finished second that day and it was a good performance, but it was visibly not her favourite ground. She is a big filly and she struggled to find her balance. We took our time with her as I believe she has a lot of talent.

A winner last year in America where she lifted the Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Stakes over 1m3f, she has run three times this season. After winning at Longchamp, she was then the runner-up in a listed at Clairfontaine over 1m4f.
It took me a while to get her back. Like many horses that travel to Hong Kong, she took her time to come back. She won at Longchamp the other day and is slowly coming back to form. She could run again soon, but she needs to run well again in order to start planning something bigger for her.

Following her very easy victory in the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont, classic glory seemed to be within her reach, but she only finished sixth in the Prix de Diane Longines.
She will probably run in the Prix Pomone. She likes good ground. She didn’t produce a bad performance in the Prix de Diane. After they left the gates she was shuffled back in the field and when they came into the final straight, she had to come on the outside. She nevertheless produced a very good effort in the final straight and she certainly is capable of more.

Third on her debut in a maiden for fillies and colts at Compiègne over 1 ¼ m.
Her dam won the Prix Marcel Boussac. Rosala’s pedigree is fascinating. She produced a good performance on her debut, and I think she will improve. She is an interesting one to follow.

Easily won his maiden at Clairefontaine over 1 ½ m.
He is a horse I like. He is very big, so he couldn’t run earlier on in the year. He has a lot of stamina and made a very convincing effort to win that race. I liked what I saw, so we shall see where he will go next time.

Made little impression on his first two starts, but recently won his maiden over 1m 3f at Dieppe.
When he made his debut, we weren’t sure why he didn’t run any better and then the other day, he won a nice little maiden. The runner-up, a filly called Pleurothalis, had been previously beaten by Valia, the good filly. Obviously, Sheraz is a gelding, so he won’t have that many options, but he should be able to win a listed.

Won her maiden on her fourth start at Vichy over the mile. Had previously been the runner-up over 1 ¼ m. Seems to have improved quite a bit from last year.
She is coming back. She was the runner-up in a maiden at Lion D’Angers and then she won a mile race at Vichy the other day. I think she could go up to listed level now. She is by Nathaniel, so I would be looking for soft ground. She is a filly who has a lot of blood, she takes a bit of time to come down from her races. If you train horses like her too much, they get nervous and if you don’t work them enough, they become difficult. It’s only on the day of the race that you will find out if you managed to train them the right way.

Unbeaten in two starts over 1 ½ m, including a listed, she could be a real challenger to all the other three-year-old fillies that are being aimed at the Arc this year.
She is entered in the Prix Minerve, a Group 3, which is run on 16th of August at Deauville. She won her maiden and the listed very easily and she will be aimed at the Prix Vermeille. As we need to run her before that, she will probably run in the Prix Minerve. But if the ground is not good at Deauville, then she might sit it out. She is entered in the Arc and while we won’t know if she will actually run in the Arc, she is a filly I liked from the start. Physically I like her a lot, she is very good looking, and she has a great temperament. She ticks all the boxes and so even though she hadn’t had a run yet, I didn’t want to get to the Arc and then find out I hadn’t entered her. In the Minerve she will come up against her elders, which will be a good prep for the Prix Vermeille.

A half-brother to outstanding stayer Vazirabad, he is unbeaten in two starts over 9 ½ furlongs. He has only run in the provinces, but won well last time out when he was going away from the field.
If everything goes well, there is a listed race for colts on the 16th of August at Deauville, he could go for that one. It was a good race that last one at Chateaubriant. There were at least five winners in that race, and he walked all over them. This is a nice horse. We have to see how good he really is.

Products of the former Arc winner Zarkava always attract a lot of attention and this daughter by Siyouni was no exception when she made her debut at Compiegne. In soft ground she easily won her maiden over 1 ¼ m. Interestingly, she has not got an entry in the Arc.
She won her maiden in good style and I am not sure yet if I will run her in Deauville or not. I don’t want to run her on firm ground.

He is the son of Zerkaza who was the first foal out of Zarkava by Dalakhani. He is a very good-looking horse, very elegant. Twice he has won easily now. I wanted to take my time, as he is still immature, but he looks promising.
