Mark Johnston Stable Tour
27 Jul 2020

Goodwood may be a little bit different for the Mark Johnston raiding party this year but the target will be once again to head the table of winners of the week and, once again, the Middleham trainer sends a strong team for the five-day Festival.

The star of the show 12 months ago was Nayef Road who took the Group 3 Gordon Stakes and returns for another clash with Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup, and Johnston ended last year meeting with an additional five winners courtesy of Sir Ron Priestley, Mrs Bouquet, Governor of Punjab, Homespin and King’s Advice.

Charlie Johnston, assistant to his father Mark, said: “This year is going to be different, but it will still mean a busy week for us even though we won’t be stopping down like we usually do and entertaining our owners. To be leading trainer is always a target, but this year prize money is down, and the owners are not as keen to run if they can’t enjoy the experience of Goodwood. However, we have a likeable team and hopefully we can pick up a few winners along the way.

Charlie kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those likely to be in action on the Sussex Downs this week.

Winner of three of his 8 starts and currently rated 95. Scored by half a length from Ghostwatch at Newmarket (1m 6f) in July off a mark of 90.
I think he will run in the Summer Stakes. He won the mile and six handicap at the July meeting at Newmarket. He is a horse who was off for three years with a tendon injury but has come back in great form in two runs this year. Frankie felt he would improve from his Newmarket run and he should go there with a very good chance. We are trying to get Frankie back on board again.

Winner of seven of his 28 starts and currently rated 115. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Eagles By Day in the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup at York (1m 6f) this month.
He will probably run in the Glorious Stakes. He has run well in defeat in his last two starts, finishing second at Newmarket and York in the last couple of weeks and he is just a solid reliable horse. It would be nice to maybe reunite the partnership with Silvestre de Sousa, who has won on him six times, if he doesn’t have to ride for his retained owner. A mile and a half around there suits him fine.

We could possibly run Vale of Kent again in the mile handicap on Friday. He ran at Ascot last Saturday and he finished second in the Goodwood race last year. He led everywhere but the last 50 yards so I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned up again.

He blew his chance in the Bunbury Cup by missing the break, so he clearly has his own ideas about the game. We put him back through the stalls this week and he was ok, and he needs to jump on terms to have any chance.

Winner of a listed event at Newmarket (1m) in June when beating Lord Tennyson four and quarter lengths and excellent effort in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot (1m) the same month when third, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Circus Maximus.
He will run in the Lennox Stakes. He ran a fantastic third in the Queen Anne at Ascot and ran a disappointing race in the Summer Mile. I am not sure what the excuse was that day but maybe they went a little hard up in front and he got taken on for the lead by a couple of horses that were racing quite keenly. I think dropping back to seven will suit the horse and it’s tough renewal with 13 runners, but he is a star and solid likeable horse that invariably runs his race

Maydanny is another who will have to bounce back after a disappointing run at Newmarket when we expected him to win that day. The ground had obviously gone quite soft which would possibly have been against him. He's stepping up to a mile and a quarter and back on better ground - he sneaks into the bottom of the weights.

Winner of five of his 17 starts and currently rated 115. Landed the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Newcastle (2m 1/2f) in June by three quarters of a length from Mildenberger and subsequently runner-up, beaten 10 lengths, to Stradivarius in the Gold Cup at Ascot (2m 4f) later that month.
He will run in the Goodwood Cup. I am really looking forward to it – we had a bit of a debate after Ascot and could have shied away from Stradivarius and run in something like the Henry II Stakes but you have to go and take him on. We spent all last year finishing second to Stradivarius with Dee Ex Bee but this is what sport is about and you have to take on the best. I think Nayef Road will improve from Ascot, stepping back to two miles will suit him and fast ground will help. I would be disappointed if he didn’t get closer to Stradivarius than he did at Ascot, but we are under no illusions as to the task that he’s been set.

He ran a very creditable race in the Ascot Handicap and is another who could take his chance in the two mile four and a half furlong handicap on the Wednesday. He obviously stays very well, and he is another who couldn’t be ruled out.

He is one of two of ours in the mile and a quarter handicap and he won at Epsom on Derby Day. It was a good performance to win there and he has to put behind him a pretty disappointing run in the John Smith’s Cup at York last weekend. He had an awful draw at York in stall 24 and I would never discount a handicapper of ours at Goodwood. I think we have won this race four times in the last few years and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him bounce back.

He will be one of two or three runners for us in the two mile and four and a half handicap on the Wednesday. He ran a bit disappointing on his last start but invariably this isn’t a deep race and he has a bit of class about him. He will go for one of the handicaps as well. He won recently at Windsor with Andrea (Atzeni) on board and looked in a lot of trouble when last turning for home and then flew late on to get on top. I would think we would be leaning to a mile and a half with him, but he is another, hopefully, progressive three-year-old and he is also in the mile and three on Friday.

He will probably run somewhere as well, and he is in the mile and a half handicap and also in the Gordon Stakes. He finished second in the Italian Derby last time out which was a fantastic run. We hoped the handicapper would ignore it as the racing over in Italy isn’t particularly strong although it was officially a Group 2 and he got a lot of money for finishing second. Winner of three of his 5 starts and currently rated 103. Continued his progression when beating Call Me Ginger a length and three quarters at Hamilton (6f) this month off a mark of 97.
He is a nice progressive horse and he is entered in the Group 2 King George Stakes over five furlongs. He is a three-year-old Sprinter on a stiff upward curve, and he has won three of his last four starts. The only disappointment was in soft ground at Newmarket and in the event that anything was amiss with Baatash we might run here but if not we will go to the Stewards’ Cup the following day. He won the Scottish Stewards’ Cup at Hamilton last time and handles six furlong downhill very well. He could go very well.

Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently rated 103. Returned to winning form when beating Tritonic a length and three quarters in the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton (1m 3f) in July.
Subjectivist might possibly run in the Gordon Stakes. He won the Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton a couple of weeks ago and this had been the plan since. I am now slightly getting cold feet because it looks a tougher renewal of the Gordon than come sometimes be the case. English King, Khalifa Sat and may be Mogul are going to go there so a lot of the horses in the Derby are coming here. If we don’t like it, we might sit tight and wait for March Stakes. He is Sir Ron Priestley’s little brother and we are campaigning him towards the St Leger as well. He is certainly following in the same direction and he has a very successful first three runs of the year and, hopefully, can continue building in that direction.

Winner of two of her 9 starts and currently rated 91. Finished third, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Subjectivist in the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton (1m 3f) this month.
She will run in the last race on the Tuesday – the mile and a half fillies’ handicap. She was third in a listed race last time and she is dropping back into handicap company. She is a winner on the track at Goodwood and is a solid consistent filly. We would be hoping for a good run from her.

Winner of three of his 5 starts and currently rated 91. Scored his latest success at Newmarket (1m 2f) this month when beating Man of The Night a length and a half off a mark of 83.
There are three three-year-old handicaps during the course of the week between a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half we are not entirely sure how they will be split up yet but Zabeel Champion will be going somewhere. He won well in a very competitive handicap at Newmarket on the July course and he is the mile and a half on the Wednesday and the mile and quarter on the following day. We wouldn’t be concerned about stepping him up and he looks a very progressive horse and Ryan Moore is booked to ride wherever he runs. He is also in the mile and three handicap on Friday so we will see where we go with him.

Interestingly, Sir Ron Priestley and Subjectivist’s half-sister Alba Rose is in the seven-furlong maiden fillies race on Thursday. She could possibly make her debut there and she goes very nicely. This will be a tough place to start her off, but we do like her and the family hasn’t done much wrong for us so far.

Winner of two of his 3 starts and currently rated 88. Returned to winning form with a vengeance when scoring by seven and a half lengths from Boot Scootin Baby at Lingfield (6f) this month.
He has a few options and is in the Molecomb, the Richmond and the nursery. Looking at the race at the moment I would be leaning to running him in the Molecomb which would mean coming back to five furlongs. I am not sure he needs to come back to five, but it looks weaker than the Richmond and the strength of the opposition is the most important factor. He was very impressive at Lingfield, but it was an auction race and this would be a big step up in class

Has run well in two starts finishing runner-up, beaten half a length, to Devious Company at Haydock (7f) in June and fourth, beaten five and a half lengths, to Battleground in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Ascot (7f) later that month.
We have introduced some nice horses in the seven-furlong maiden on Saturday in recent years – Dee Ex Bee and West End Charmer spring to mind. We might play it safe and just run Golden Flame who was entered in the Vintage and finished fourth in the Chesham. He is still yet to break his maiden. We might also run a newcomer but Golden Flame will go for that.

Winner of one of his 2 starts. Off the mark in a novice at Thirsk (7f) in June when scoring by three quarters of a length from Deputy.
We have a hatful in the nursery on Thursday and we will probably run a couple of them. My gut feeling it the best handicapped of them at the moment is probably High Peak. He finished second first time out over six and then won comfortably at Thirsk on his second start over seven.

Winner of two of her 4 starts and currently rated 68. Scored by three and a half lengths from Bergerac in a nursery at York (6f) on Saturday.
We have a few entries in the six-furlong nursery on Friday. She won at York on Saturday and she will need a bit of luck to get in, but she won comfortably and is a filly in good form and will probably go there as well.

Winner of one of his 2 starts and currently rated 96. Made a winning debut at Kempton (7f) in June when beating Recovery Run two and three quarter lengths and subsequently sixth, beaten six and a quarter lengths, to Master Of The Seas in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket (7f) this month.
The Vintage Stakes looks a warm enough renewal with Battleground setting the standard. I thought King Zain ran a nice race in the Superlative at Newmarket – he looked to travelling as well as anything under Frankie three furlongs out and then he was quite green and unbalanced and just looked like a horse lacking experience at the business end of the race. He has quite a lot of ground to make up on Devious Company but I think there is a lot more to come from King Zain.

No wins from 2 starts and currently rated 76. Better effort when runner-up, beaten a neck, to Bonnyrigg on his latest start at Newmarket (6f) in June.
He runs in the six-furlong maiden on Tuesday and he ran well when just touched off at Newmarket last month. He should have won that day but just hung a bit in the closing stages and got caught on the line. Obviously, it’s a Goodwood maiden but there is nothing too scary in there with form it’s just whether any the newcomers are but this horse sets a decent standard on is Newmarket run and Ryan Moore is booked.

Winner of one of his 3 starts. Finished fourth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Tactical in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket (6f) in July.
We will probably run Qaader in the Richmond Stakes. He finished second in the Coventry and fourth in the July Stakes. He is still a lightly raced horse, but he has run well in defeat in probably the two of the best two-year-old races run so far. I thought he travelled very well at Newmarket and he looked to have Tactical and Yazaman in trouble two furlongs out, but they certainly stayed the last furlong in soft ground stronger than he did. Hopefully, that means a sharp six at Goodwood on better ground will help us reverse the form with Yazaman. He looks the danger and I don’t think there is too much in there that would scare me outside him, so it looks a bit of a rematch.

Winner of one of his 2 starts and currently rated 91. Scored by a length and three quarters from Rebel At Dawn on his debut at Newcastle in June and subsequently sixth, beaten six lengths, to Nando Parrado in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Ascot (6f) in June.
He is our other runner in the Vintage and I thought he ran a really nice race in the Coventry where he finished sixth. This has been the plan for him since stepping him up to seven furlongs and that will suit him. Both should run well and be there or thereabouts.
