Owen Burrows Stable Tour
20 Jul 2020

There may have been no roar from the crowd with racing being run behind closed doors but Hukum’s half-length victory in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot provided the affable Owen Burrows with a welcome first success at the Royal meeting.

The fortunes took a further swing forward for the Lambourn trainer when Tabdeed earmarked his credentials as a progressive sprinter when beating The Tin Man half a length in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury on Saturday and in Twaasol, winner of the Woodcote at Epsom he has plenty to enthuse about as his season begins in earnest.

Owen said: “It was a great thrill to get on the scoresheet at Royal Ascot even though it was a bit of a shame it wasn’t a normal year but it’s there in the records. Hopefully, we have horse in Tabdeed who can carry on his progress at higher level and there is plenty to look forward to in the coming months.”

Burrows kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his team down at Kingwood House Stables.

Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently 103. Finished third, beaten eight and three quarter lengths, to Desert Icon in a handicap at Newmarket (1m 2f) in June off his current mark.
Unfortunately, he has been very disappointing this fella for whatever reason and we can’t quite put our finger on it. He ran at Newmarket and travels away but doesn’t seem to finish his races. We are contemplating bring him back to a mile and letting him bowl along and whether that’s the right thing we will find out. He was a horse of such promise as an early three-year-old but last year didn’t go his way and we gelded him during the winter. He ran a good race at Doncaster last year and he didn’t run bad at Goodwood in very soft ground in a listed race when he got flattened but he was very disappointing at Chelmsford on his last run and disappointed at Newmarket on his first run this year.

Winner of four of his 11 starts and currently rated 102. Finished unplaced, beaten 10 lengths, to Motakhayyel in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Ascot (7f) in June off a mark of 105.
He ran at Royal Ascot and ground was against him and he was drawn on the wrong side. He has been badly handicapped, but we are slowly coming down in the weights. There is a seven-furlong handicap next week on King George day at Ascot and he will have an entry there. If the ground is fast, he will take up the entry there.

Winner of five of his 8 starts and currently rated 104. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Glen Shiel in a handicap at Newcastle (6f) on his reappearance in June off a mark of 103 and went one better in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury (6f) on Saturday when scoring by half a length from The Tin Man.
He was slightly unlucky at Newcastle where he just missed the beat a little and it all happened up the middle and he was drawn stands side but still finished second. The winner finished second in a Group 3 in France recently and he gained a deserved success in that grade at Newbury on Saturday when showing a fine turn of foot up the stands rail to beat The Tin Man. The only problem we have now is that there is nothing really there for him in the near future. He likes just a little bit of ease in the ground and we would want to go up to Group 2 level next, but we will have to consider the Sprint Cup at Haydock Park in September.

Winner of three of his 11 starts and currently rated 107. Finished third, beaten two lengths, to Gin Palace in a handicap at Newmarket (1m) at the end of June off his current mark.
He has an entry for the mile listed race at Pontefract on Thursday and he ran third at Newmarket on his return carrying plenty of weight. If he could have got to the front it may have been a different story, but they went very slow and he got boxed in. He finished off well after getting out late and it was his first run after a wind operation, and it should have given him a bit of confidence. Last year he always looked like a horse who was going to be suited by further than a mile and it would be no surprise if we went back to ten furlongs.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 90. Finished third, beaten six and a quarter lengths, to Calling The Wind in a handicap at Ascot (1m 6f) this month off his current mark.
He finished third at Ascot last week and unfortunately the race wasn’t probably run to suit. He was drawn one and they didn’t go over quick and he is a big horse who takes a furlong to hit full stride. Unfortunately, he was hemmed in turning in and they all came around the outside and got first run on him and by the time he got going it was too late. He won well at Doncaster last year with a bit of juice in the ground and we will try and find something similar. There are definitely races to be won with him again.

He was very disappointing in the Paradise at Newmarket in the first week of racing and he had been unbeaten before then. He had been working very well and we were hoping for a good run but he made no sort of show. He wasn’t quite right afterwards so we had to give him a bit of time and he is back in full work now, but he won’t be ready until mid-August time. He is rated 96 do we will go down that route unless he tells us any different. On his homework he tells us he’s a good horse.

Winner of one of his 7 starts and currently rated 95. Has finished runner-up in both his starts this term – beaten two lengths by Solid Stone at Sandown (1m) in June off a mark of 91 and a length by Orbaan at York (1m) in July off a mark of 93.
He is a such an honest horse and has run twice this season and finished second twice and unfortunately he keeps going up a couple of pounds every time he runs. He is off 95 now but he is a very straightforward horse and wears his heart on his sleeve. There is a handicap for him at Goodwood on August 1 over a mile and a furlong. His run style is to be at the front and unfortunately he is there to be shot at and he was beaten by a good horse of Sir Michael Stoute’s and then at York he came up against a horse of David O’Meara’s who had real good form in France and came back to form. He has not been disgraced at all and it would be nice for him to get his head back in front.

He is in at Chepstow on Tuesday. He had one run at a two-year-old and then had to have a wind operation, but I was pleased with him at Bath and he just missed the kick. He is a big horse that needs to be up there using his stride and if he handles the undulations at Chepstow, I would be expecting a good run.

He won first time at Doncaster and I did have him in last weekend at York, but I was a bit concerned that is might dry out a bit as he wants good ground. We will look for something else for him, but he is a progressive horse and I am sure that he will get a mile and future targets will be a stiff seven or a mile.

He came to me in March after having a couple of runs in France. He had an issue with the stalls, and he went back to Shadwell. Credit goes to the Witherfords who have done a very good job with him and he went in and out on his debut for me at Haydock and ran a tidy enough race. I am going to wait and get him on a bit of better ground and I have entered him for a race at Sandown this week. He hasn’t got a soft ground action and he is an Exceed And Excel and they normally don’t tend to go on softer ground.

Obviously we were thrilled with his win at Ascot and unfortunately something struck into him behind. His off hind needed stitching but there is no damage as such, and it has heeled well and he’s back in strong work. There is a three-year-old handicap at Goodwood on July 29 and he has been put up to 97 but we could have a look at that or do we look for something a bit better. He is due to work on Wednesday and we will go from there.

She won at Windsor the other Monday after finishing runner-up at Sandown and she is a nice filly. Dare I say it, but the handicapper has given us a good chance of 81 and let’s hope she can work her way through the ranks. He ran a nice race first time out at Doncaster and put up a similar effort in what looked a very decent novice race at York on Sunday. He is bit of a slow learner and he is a work in progress. He could be a nice horse in the future, and he could go handicapping next.

No wins from 4 starts and currently rated 75. Finished seventh, beaten 13 lengths, to Nugget at Doncaster (1m) in June off a mark of 77.
He showed bits and pieces for me last year and was very disappointing at Doncaster. It was the easy side of good that day and the jockey said that was the only excuse he could find. He had an entry this week but at moment I wouldn’t think he would run and 75 will be hard to win with in these competitive three-year-old handicaps at the moment.

Finished fourth, beaten 11 ½ lengths, to Snash on her debut at Wolverhampton (6f) in June.
She finished fourth first time out at Wolverhampton and it probably just stretched her over six. I have her over five furlongs at Sandown on Tuesday and all being well she will run there. She is not very big, and she should have been out in April time but the way the year has progressed she couldn’t. She has pleased me since her run, and we will see what we can do at Sandown.

Unplaced, beaten 14 lengths, to Army Of India on his debut at Kempton (6f) in June.
He was my first two-year-old runner in the first week of racing and he was working pretty well, and I was expecting a good run. He was drawn on the wide outside and jumped into the space on his left and never raised a gallop. He wasn’t quite right afterwards, and we have given him a bit of time, but he is back in strong work and will be ready to go in two or three weeks’ time. We will stay at six furlongs and I am sure he will get seven too.

Winner of both of his starts. Scored by three quarter of a length from subsequent scorer Zamaani at Windsor (6f) in June and followed up with a length and a half victory from Modern Mews in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom (6f) in July.
“He has done nothing wrong winning both of his races and even before Windsor I thought he was going to be better at seven furlongs than six. He obviously showed speed, but it wasn’t blistering speed as such and he has been strong at the end of his races over six. Martin Harley said at Epsom last time that now it’s time to step him up in grade we should go over seven furlongs. There is the Pat Eddery Memorial race, a listed event over seven furlongs, or the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and we will see.

Starting to come down the weights and just a little more leniency from the handicapper could see him back in the winner’s enclosure.

Looks the sort of filly to make a mockery of her current handicap mark.

Came with a storming late run to win the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury on Saturday and this lightly-raced individual could well be a Group 1 winner in the making.

Put in another solid effort in a novice at York on Sunday and looks sure to be winning in the eminent future.

Has done nothing wrong in two winning starts and the step up to seven furlongs can bring further success.
