Fabrice Chappet Stable Tour
25 Jun 2020

Currently in great form, Fabrice Chappet, who regularly features in the top ten trainers in France, has his eyes firmly set on this year’s classics when he saddles no less than three runners in the Prix du Jockey Club (the French Derby), and three in the Prix de Diane Longines (the French Oaks), which for the first time will both be run on the same day, and will also be live on Sky Sports Racing.

The Chantilly-based trainer has already tasted classic success in 2017 when Precieuse lifted the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and says: “There are only five classic races in a season in most countries, so obviously they are important and something worth thriving for.

“We came very close this year again in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches where Speak Of The Devil only just missed out by a nose. I have to admit that in a different year we might not have had that many runners in the upcoming classics, but the programme has changed, and we are going to take our chances.”

Here, he talks Liz Price of attheraces.com about his runners in the upcoming French Classics that take place on Sunday 5 July, as well as some other horses, including an exciting juvenile, that are worth following in the future.

Consistent performer over the mile and a mile and a quarter. Won on his second start this season and was recently the runner-up in a Listed at Compiegne.
He ran very well at Compiegne. Unfortunately, he couldn’t run in a handicap at Ascot like he did last year, as that wasn’t allowed. He is in great form and if everything goes well he will run in the big handicap at Deauville where he finished third last year, but he probably will be eliminated as France Galop has had the great idea of bringing in a new rule where horses that have run abroad in one of their last five starts will be eliminated first. As he ran in Saint Moritz this winter, he falls into that category.

He runs in the Listed Prix Hampton this Saturday at Chantilly. He likes soft ground, which he probably won’t get, but he is in great form and always runs his race.

Australian-owned young stayer who beat proven Group 1 winners in the Group 2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier.
He is very good. He is owned by the Australian OTI Management, so the plan is to go to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup. He will probably have a prep race in Australia in October, but before that he has the option of running either in the Goodwood Cup, the Ebor handicap or the Prix Kergorlay. We don’t know yet where exactly he will go to this summer. He has beaten good stayers last time, so it bodes well.

Fourth in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, he came to Royal Ascot with big ambitions in the Jersey Stakes where he only managed to finish fifth.
He ran really well in the French 2000 Guineas and then he ran a little below par in the Jersey Stakes. I was hoping for a better performance, but maybe it came a bit too quick for him. However, I don’t really want to look for excuses. He came back well though and we shall see what he will do.

Won a Class 2 race over 9 furlongs on his second start.
He is one of the good three-year-olds who won well on his second start. He was only fourth on his first start, which was a bit disappointing, but then he produced a very good performance in a Class 2 race. He will run in the Prix Ridgway, a listed, on the 2nd July at Longchamp.

Following an encouraging seasonal reappearance, won his maiden by lifting the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe over 11 furlongs.
On his debut at Deauville last year, he ran very well and more importantly, he finished his race really well. He then ran again at Saint-Cloud on the day where racing was eventually abandoned, as the ground was unacceptable, so you can forget that run. On his first start this season he was beaten by a horse that had already ran twice. He then went on to win the Prix Greffulhe, which is a good trial for the Prix du Jockey Club. He is in great form and will now go for the Prix du Jockey Club. He certainly deserves to line up in this race and it is the logical step now for him.

Made her seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte where she weakened in the final stages. Runner-up when dropped back in trip at Angers.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lot of options where to run her, so we had to divert to the little racecourse of Angers. She was only beaten a nose there. She will now run in the Listed Prix Volterra on Sunday.

Won her maiden on her debut over 7 furlongs at Deauville last summer and finished her two-year-old season with a first attempt at Group level when she finished fifth in the Group 3 Prix Miesque. This year, she was the runner-up in a listed on her seasonal reappearance and then finished third in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.
She is a little bit like Speak of the Devil in the sense that her aim after finishing third in the Poule would have been to run in the Prix de Sandringham, which is a logical target after finishing third in the Poule. But France Galop rescheduled the race to be run 18 days after the Poule and that just came too early. So, it wasn’t possible to run in it, as you couldn’t run a filly three times in 36 days. Hence, she will also run in the Prix de Diane, which makes everyone happy. She is a filly who could stay, she certainly finishes her races.

Well-bred filly who won her maiden over the mile last year and then won the Group 2 Prix Vanteaux in great style before running second in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary.
It didn’t pan out for her on her last start. She was a bit eager, a bit too fresh. It wasn’t a great race for me in terms of how it developed. She will run in the Prix de Diane, but we will ride her a little bit differently, switch her off more than in the Saint-Alary. The winner of the Saint-Alary was very impressive, even if we didn’t have the best of races.

A listed winner over the mile, he has since tried himself at Group 3 level. Has entry in the Prix du Jockey Club.
He won a nice listed and then was stepped up to Group 3 company where he found himself probably a little below that level. He will be wearing blinkers next time to sharpen him up a bit. He will run in the Prix du Jockey Club where he will be an outsider, but he will take his chance.

A winner on her only start last year, she was the fastest finishing filly in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, where she finished second by a nose.
She is very good. You mustn’t forget that the Poule was only the third start in her career. It is always difficult to go into such a race with only two starts and so all credit goes to her. Like every trainer we would have liked to have had another run beforehand, but with lockdown it was obviously not feasible. In normal times I would have taken her to Royal Ascot for the Coronation Stakes, but that came a bit too quick for her. So now we are going for the Prix de Diane. Her owner is delighted to have a runner in that race. She is in good form and there is just a slight question mark over the trip. We shall see if she stays. She ran well in soft ground last year and the ground for the Poule was good and it will probably be good, if not on the firm side for the Prix de Diane. We will have to adapt and see how it goes.
