Jerome Reynier Stable Tour
24 Jun 2020

Travelling around the world is an essential part of the Godolphin Flying Start programme and it comes as no surprise that former graduate Jerome Reynier enjoys sending his horses to far-flung places.

The horse that has allowed him to travel from Royal Ascot to Italy, from Doha to Bahrain is Royal Julius, who provided him with his first Group winner of his career and who shot to international fame when he wrote his name into the history books as the inaugural winner of the Bahrain International Trophy.

“Royal Julius is a real globetrotter,” says Reynier, who is based in Calas, a training centre situated between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence.

“His owner has kindly given me a free hand with him and hence I have been able to try different things. He is a truly amazing horse who has won over 890,000 euros in prizemoney for us. He is now seven years old and is in his prime. He takes his races well and always does what we ask him to do.

“This though is his final year, as will probably retire to stud next year. He is well bred; a son of Royal Applause and the dam is by Dubawi. He has won each year that he has raced and I hope he can win again now as a seven-year-old.”

Royal Julius might have given Jerome Reynier his first Group winner, but he is not the only black type performer in his 90-horse strong yard at Calas. Here, he gives Liz Price of a selection of horses that he expects to do well during the summer and leading into the autumn.

Older Horses
Royal Julius
Royal Applause
7 bay c Royal Applause - Hflah
real globetrotter who has won in Italy and last year lifted the inaugural Bahrain International Trophy over the mile and a quarter. Very consistent at Group 2 and 3 level. Was third on his reappearance at Deauville in the Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly.
He will run in the Gran Premio di Milano on Sunday. He finished third in the Grand Prix de Chantilly on his seasonal reappearance, which we were very happy with. He had won the inaugural Bahrain International Trophy and had been to Doha last year and now he is going to try and win that Group 2 in Milan on Sunday. He might then go to Germany and run in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis in Munich. He also has an entry in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and he could also return to Bahrain to defend his title. And then he could finish his career in Hong Kong in the Vase.
5 gre g Kendargent - Skallet
A winner of seven consecutive races last year, including the Qatar Prix Dollar and the Premio Roma in Italy. Incredibly versatile and capable of winning over the mile and a mile and a quarter. Was third on his seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil.
He was unbeaten on turf last year and in fact won three consecutive Group races. He has made a satisfying seasonal reappearance in a Group 3 where he waited towards the back and then made his run under hands and heels only. I was very happy with that first start and since then he has progressed nicely. He likes a bit of cut in the ground. He is very versatile, as he has won over the straight mile and he has won over a mile and a quarter with a bend. He will run this Sunday in the Prix du Muguet. He needs a bit of pace in his races so that he doesn’t pull. When there are few runners it is always a bit of a worry. However, whilst I don’t think there’ll be many runners in the Prix du Muguet, there should be pace in the race.
Spirit Of Nelson
Spirit Of Pearl
Mount Nelson
5 bay f Mount Nelson - Spirit Of Pearl
A winner of the 2019 Group 3 Prix de Flore over the extended mile and a quarter. Has been placed in both of her starts in a Group 3 and Group 2 race this year.
I managed to keep her in training at five even though she already had a place at stud. I was very pleased with her seasonal reappearance in the Prix Exbury where she finished second. And then she finished third in the Prix Corrida last time out. She will run in the Grand Prix de Vichy and then she could go for the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville, a race she did well in last year. And I would love to take her abroad to run in something like the E.P. Taylor Stakes, but we shall see. She is a mare who is very consistent, a very nice mare.
Champ De Mars
La Dancia
4 bay g Cityscape - La Dancia
Runs mainly in handicaps and recently won a mile and a quarter handicap at Salon Provence.
He is a nice horse who is very consistent. He won again the other day and is a horse I like a lot. He runs mainly over 1 ¼ m.
4 bay c Makfi - Bartira
After an early start to the season at Cagnes-Sur-Mer, he was Group 3 placed over a mile and a quarter. He was then stepped up to 1m 7f for the first time this month at Dieppe where he won comfortably.
I like him a lot. He finished third in the Prix Exbury and recently won in a very nice fashion when he was stepped up in trip. He will remain over the longer trips now and could go for a listed on the 1st of August at Deauville, the Prix du Carrousel. This is a steppingstone that could lead to the Prix du Kergorlay. He might stay in Deauville for the meeting and then he could go for a race like the Prix Royal Oak. He is very consistent and likes soft ground.
Three Year Olds
Amica Nostra
3 bay f Epaulette - Qenaa
Was placed on both of her starts over 1 ¼ m.
She hasn’t got a rating yet, but she ran well both times. She was the runner-up on her debut and then finished third last time out. She is a horse to follow as she will win her maiden soon. She is a nice filly who is owned by someone who has been with me since the beginning of my career. I wasn’t that keen on her first, but she has grown during the spring and she ran well first time out.
Big Tamaya
Big Emotion
3 che f Tamayuz - Big Emotion
Beat stable companion Amica Nostra on her debut and was third in the Prix des Tertres, a Class 1 race, on her second start at Chantilly.
She won easily on her debut. We then wanted her to get some experience of a hotter race and a bigger racecourse, so we ran her in a prep race for the Prix de Diane at Chantilly. She was beaten by two Andre Fabre trained fillies, including Bonne Idee who might run in the Prix de Diane. She really did well on her second start, and she will now run in a Listed at Vichy on 20 July. The aim is to get her some black type. We like her a lot.
America Nova
Lope De Vega
3 gre f Lope De Vega - America Nova
Owned by the China Horse Club International, she finished fourth on her debut in a 6 ½ f race at Salon Provence in May this year.
She did well on her first start when she was still a bit green. She will probably run this Saturday at Marseille. I’m sure she will win soon. She has a lot of natural speed, so I might run her in a listed over the sprint distance.
Elusive Foot
Elusive Pearl
3 bay c Footstepsinthesand - Elusive Pearl
Very experienced already, as he has run nine times already. He has run mainly on the all-weather tracks over 7 ½ furlongs. Very consistent.
He has just won his Class 2 race and he will without doubt now run in some of the big French handicaps. He won his Class 2 race the other day at Marseille in great style and I wouldn’t be surprised if would climb the ladder to end up in a listed race. He has a lot of speed and he is very genuine. He is a nice horse. He has mainly run on the all-weather, but I think he will do well in good ground.
3 bay f Makfi - Feigned
A winner on her debut at Marseille over 1 ¼ m.
She won easily on her debut and she will now run in a Class 1 race at Marseile on 24 June. She has already won on this track and we shall see how she does tomorrow, but I reckon she will be one to follow during the summer. I thought she might prefer soft ground, but she did well in good ground.
Jo Pickett
3 che g Makfi - Maredskaya
Won his maiden on his second start last season and recently lifted a Class 2 race at Lyon over 11 furlongs.
He is a son of Makfi, who will be a horse to follow towards the autumn. He comfortably beat a horse called Step By Step last time out, who has since won a Class 1 race and a listed. He is a horse we would like to preserve. He is a horse for the future. We like giving our horses a bit of time when they are three years old. He was gelded when he was very young, as he had a bit of a character and we didn’t want to take any risks.
Gris De Gris
3 bay c Gris De Gris - Marianabaa
Won his maiden over a mile on his second start last season and won on his reappearance in a Class 2 race at Bordeaux.
He is a soft ground horse. If we get a bit of rain this summer, he will be running in a Class 1 or a listed race over the mile. He is a nice horse. He is a half-brother to Marianafoot. He’s made a good impression and we can’t wait to see him again.
Stormy River
3 bay f Stormy River - Poussette
Still looking to win her maiden after four starts. Was the runner-up in a Class 2 race at Salon Provence and recently finished fourth in a maiden on the all-weather.
She should have won already, but she was unlucky last time out. I think she should win soon. She will be a horse to follow in conditions races. She was the runner-up to the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Vadsena who is going to run in the Prix de Diane, so the form looks good. She will be one to follow towards the backend of the season. She likes soft ground.
3 bay c Siyouni - Anazone
Won his maiden on his fifth attempt at Marseille over a mile and a quarter this month
He recently won his maiden. He has the same profile as Elusive Foot. He is a nice horse that will run in the handicaps for three-year-olds. He is quite a late developer, but I like him. He has a good temperament and I think he will get better with age and should easily win his Class 2 race. But as he is well placed in the handicap, we want to attempt that first.
Spirit Of Foot
Spirit Of Pearl
3 bay g Footstepsinthesand - Spirit Of Pearl
Still a maiden, he was placed third in a handicap at Salon Provence over 6 ½ furlongs in May.
He is quite a speedy horse. He will run in a maiden at Marseille this Saturday. He is quite consistent, and we like him. He is a sprinter who can run over six to seven furlongs. He is a nice horse and I think he can go places.
Big Tamaya
Was beaten by two classy fillies last time out who are going for Group 1 glory, so a listed should be well within her reach.
Elusive Foot
Extremely consistent and well handicapped he looks more than capable of winning a handicap on his next start.
Improving all the time he looks to be going places especially in soft ground.
A newcomer in the staying world with some justified ambitions.
A winner of three consecutive Group races who can do it all over again this season.
