Charlie Fellowes Stable Tour
23 Jun 2020

If Charlie Fellowes thought his week couldn’t get any better when Onassis provided him with a successive victory in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot, his fortunes would be even greater two days later.

Thanks Be had provided the Bedford House stables trainer with a first Royal Ascot winner in 2019 and he would have gratefully have settled with Onassis’s success last Thursday but the champagne corks were popping once more when Chiefofchiefs made it a double for the week when staying on strongly to beat Burmese Waltz a length and a quarter in the Silver Wokingham on Saturday.

“Winning any race at Royal Ascot is a incredible thrill but to win two is unbelievable and it’s been an unforgettable week,” said Fellows. “The horses have been running ok but they really thrived last week and long may it last.”

The stable has now notched up ten winners since the start of the year and Charlie kindly guided Tony Elves of attheraces.com through his prospects for the coming weeks and months.

Winner of six of his 27 starts and currently rated 95. Kept on strongly when beating Burmese Waltz a length and a quarter in the Silver Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot (6f) last Saturday off his current mark.
He won the Silver Wokingham impressively on Saturday. It was his first time over six furlongs and it opens up a lot of doors. I have put him in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle on Saturday but we will see about that. I would only run if I thought it was a slightly weak race, but he would love Newcastle.

He hated the ground at Ascot in the Gold Cup on Thursday. I think it was more in hope than anything else, but he had run well on ground with give in it in Australia. There’s Australian soft and English soft and there were no hiding places it wasn’t his kind of race. He will have a holiday now and then will have a prep run in England before going for a third run in the Melbourne Cup.

He was entered in the mile six Copper Horse Handicap at Ascot, but I decided to hold on for a couple of weeks with him and go for the Northumberland Plate with him. He loves Newcastle and he needs a big field and a strong pace to aim at. He is a lovely old stayer.

He did a tendon out in Dubai and he has had a long time off. He is cantering away, and the tendon feels good, but I am not rushing him, and we are looking at Autumn targets really. I think a mile to a mile and a quarter is his trip.

He won first time out and then was just doing everything the wrong way around and was very keen. I ran him over a mile a couple of times, but he needs ten furlongs. He has had a setback so is having a break and the plan is run in the autumn.

He ran a lovely race in the Sagaro having been off for a very long time. He has come through it well and there is a handicap at Newmarket in a couple of weeks’ time which I thought would work well. That race is over a mile and six – he didn’t stay the two miles at Newcastle.

Winner of four of his 14 starts and currently rated 95. Winner of his last three starts over a mile and a half at Lingfield and gained his latest there in February when beating City Tour four lengths off a mark of 87.
He has won his last three all around Lingfield and ran very well. He is a lovely horse, a proper gentleman, but he is not the easiest horse to train. Having had a rough patch since his final win at Lingfield he is now back on the upgrade again and in good form. He is probably a month away from being ready to run and I think he will get a mile and six but not any further than that. Hopefully, he is not finished winning.

Winner of one of her 9 starts and currently rated 75. Off the mark when scoring by three lengths from Lady Alavesa in a handicap at Chelmsford (1m) in March off a mark of 69.
She won at Chelmsford over a mile and then she ran the other day and missed the break and had to sit out the back and never got into the race. She is a very good-looking filly, but she is a big raw galloper and she is seen to best effect up with the pace. I think she will get ten furlongs with no problem and she is entered in a couple of races over the trip this week.

She won nicely at Yarmouth over a mile and six – it was a big step up in trip but on pedigree I was confident she would stay it and she will stay two miles no problem at all. She could be ahead of her mark. There is a race at Doncaster next weekend we will have a look at.”

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 106. Finished unplaced, beaten nine and a half lengths, to Mountain Angel in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot (1m 2f) last week.
Things have not gone quite right this spring – he was too keen at Haydock and had way too much to do in the Wolferton. He is a soft ground specialist and I think the ground is going to go against him. We might just look at aiming at stuff in the autumn – he’s not the finished article yet. He’s a very good horse but not there yet and ten to twelve furlongs on soft ground is what he wants.

He has just gone the wrong way at the moment – we tried to step him up to a mile and six and he was too keen. We will drop back to a mile and a half and get him into a rhythm and get him to finish his race. When he does, he is going to be a nice stayer but at the moment he is doing it the wrong way around.

He won first time out and looked like a proper horse last year then went backwards. The owner gave him a holiday and we started again, and he ran a lovely race at Sandown the other day when finishing third. He probably did a bit too much in front and just fell in a heap the last half furlong. I think we can drop back to a mile and a half with the visors on and hopefully he could be a nice stayer. He lost his way last year and he needs to prove to me that he can string two runs together.

I thought he comeback at Yarmouth was really nice. She sustained a terrible injury after Newcastle last year and we nearly lost her. Remarkably she is back on the track and she ran a huge race at Yarmouth despite being keen. She wants ten furlongs but at the moment she is just a bit gassy early on and we will keep her to a mile and teach her to settle. I think she is a nice filly.

He won five times last year and I thought his comeback at Chelmsford was ok. He has won over that course and distance but I’m not quite sure that is his track. They went very hard from the get-go and I don’t think he wants the gun to his head do early on and he is better on turf. No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 76. Finished seventh, beaten three and three quarter lengths, to Breath Of Joy at Haydock (7f) this month off a mark of 79.
He travelled really well at Haydock on his reappearance and found surprisingly little off the bridle. His work in the spring has been good and I just wonder if he is quicker than I realise, and he might just want the drop back to six. I have him in six furlong races this week and I am pretty sure he’s quick enough for that.

Finished sixth, beaten nine lengths, to Mister Snowden in a novice at Yarmouth (7f) this month.
I thought he made a really nice start at Yarmouth over a trip that was too short. I think he will stay a mile and a quarter in time, and I have put him in over a mile at Bath this week. I think he will be a nice horse for this year.

No wins from 2 starts and probably better effort when runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Union at Newcastle (7f) in January.
He ran really well on his debut and then didn’t quite come forward for it the second time. He had excuses as things didn’t quite pan out for him at Newcastle the second time in quite a good race. I have given him an easy time and he is cantering, and he will probably be ready to run towards the end of July or so. I think he could be a nice horse.

He got an injury in the spring which has set him back. He is due to start cantering this week and, hopefully, we will get a clear run from there. He was a very late foal, a June foal, and I am hoping he will improve with age.

He is a really nice horse and very good looking. His work was good in the spring, but he has a lot of issues and we decided to geld him a couple of weeks ago and take the weight off his joints. I do really like this horse but he’s not easy to train and he is going to be one we are going to have to take our time with.

He might just be the best I have had. He could be anything and his work before he ran the other day was very good. I think we bumped into a very good horse and he might go to Doncaster for a mile novice. We are going to take our time with him and train him like the good horse I think he is.

I thought she ran an ok race at Newmarket. She travelled really well and then just got lost in the dip. She runs at Haydock on Wednesday and the track should suit her much better.

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently rated 102. Finished last of eight, beaten 29 lengths, to Russian Emperor in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot (1m 2f) last week.
He has lost his way at the moment. He really improved last year and finished up winning the listed Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract. His pedigree is very difficult workout as his dam was quick and his sire produces stayers and his trip is hard to workout. After Pontefract, Danny Tudhope said don’t rush to put him up in trip. He was far too keen at Ascot and we have to go back to the drawing board and start all over again.

He been working really well through the Winter and he duly went and won up at Newcastle but ever since then he has gone backwards on me and I don’t know why. We might look to geld him and start again – he has tons of ability this horse.

She ran a really nice race over a mile at Lingfield after a break and I thought it set her up nicely for next time. Sadly, she came home sore like she has picked up a niggle. She is nicely handicapped and will stay ten furlongs – hopefully, it is nothing serious and she can get back on the track quite soon.

Winner of two of her 7 starts and currently rated 81. Gave the trainer his second successive victory in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot (1m) last week when scoring by a length and a quarter from Waliyak.
I obviously trained her like a complete moon man last year and only worked her out at the end. She needs holding up and being ridden patiently and she shows a lot of speed. That’s why I ran her over six furlongs last year and I was concerned she would stay the mile on that soft ground at Ascot, but she saw it out very well. She gave me huge encouragement that she is better than I thought, and she could be quite a smart filly. She is beautifully bred, and she will be chasing black type from now on.

Better effort on reappearance at Chelmsford (1m) this month when runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Angel Power.
She is a very nice filly and there is not a lot between her and Onassis on their work together through the spring. She ran shockingly last year over and inadequate trip on fast ground and she duly came back and ran a blinder at Chelmsford. She will come on a ton for that and will stay a mile and a quarter. I would be disappointed if she didn’t go very close next time out.

She came to me from David Lanigan and I have taken my time with her as she’s a bit fizzy, but she’s done a couple of pieces of work over the past week that I have been quite impressed with. She could be a nice filly and is probably a couple of weeks off a run.

He is a staying prospect – he is very immature and taking a long time to come to hand. He is a very nice-looking horse and he was ready to run and then gave me the odd sign that he needed another month or so. He is cantering away, and I would say we would see him in July sometime. I love this horse and I would say he’s going to be a proper stayer but a four-year-old and five-year-old.
