Michael Halford Stable Tour
07 Jun 2020

It will come as a surprise to many, but Michael Halford has been a trainer for 35 years, having taken out his license at the age of 21 back in 1985. Success did not come quickly for him, but he gradually worked his way up the ranks and for the last decade he has been a regular fixture in the top 10 trainers in the country.

Indeed, having made a significant move to the purpose-built Copper Beech Stables in 2007, Halford has steadily increased the quality of his string and his performance has gone up a gear too. High-profile owners such as the Aga Khan and Sheikh Mohammed have come on-board and he got off the mark in Group 1 company when saddling Casamento to win the Racing Post Trophy in 2010.

With a significant squad of promising horses at his disposal for 2020, Halford was good enough to sit down with Kevin Blake for attheraces.com to discuss their prospects.

Rated 105, she has steadily progressed into a high-class mare, most recently winning the Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse and three Listed races last season.
Surrounding had a break after she arrived back from Dubai and is back working now. She has been a wonderful mare for all involved with her and as long as she’s enjoying it, we’ll keeping her racing. She’ll be campaigned in Stakes races and should give us all plenty more fun.

Rated 102, she won a maiden at Tipperary and the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown last season. She made a promising seasonal reappearance when second in the Park Express Stakes at Naas in March.
We have her entered in both the Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh next weekend and the Pretty Polly at the Curragh at the end of the month. I’ve been delighted with her since she made her comeback at Naas in March and she’s moving particularly well at the moment. She likes a little ease in the ground and a mile-and-a-quarter shouldn’t be any problem for her. I’d be hopeful she can be improve again this season.

Rated 105, he has won three of his six career starts, most recently winning a valuable handicap at Meydan in February.
I’m very happy with him and the plan is to start him back in the Martin Molony Stakes at Limerick on June 17th. The step up to a mile-and-a-half should suit him. The trip to Dubai was the making of him. He grew up, strengthened up and really learned his job there. I’d be very hopeful that there is more to come from him this season.

Rated 86, he ran well without winning in handicaps last season.
He’s been gelded since his last run and his recent work has been good. He’s entered in the Irish Lincoln, but he might struggle to get into that. He is quite versatile with regard to trip these days. He’s settling much better than he used to, so we might well try him over a mile-and-a-half again.

He was a bit unlucky not to win a maiden during the winter season at Dundalk, as he bumped into a couple of well-above-average sorts. He’s ready to go and might well start off at Gowran Park next week.

She wasn’t quite strong enough to make the track last season, so we have taken our time and given her a chance to strengthen. She has plenty of size and scope. She works like a filly that will be up to winning a maiden.

Has run well without winning in his three starts to date, most recently finishing second in a maiden at Dundalk in December.
In a normal winter at Dundalk, he would have had no problem winning a maiden, but the maidens were particularly strong there last winter and he came up a little bit short. We gelded him since his last run and he’s done well. He has got very strong and will be ready to run in a few weeks. He wouldn’t be sure to stay further than a mile, as he shows plenty of pace.

I’ve been really happy with him since he won at Dundalk. He has grown and got very strong. He doesn’t give away a lot at home, as he’s very laid back and is a lazy worker. We’ll get him started back in a handicap or a winners-of-one and I think he has good improvement in him. He should have no problem with a mile-and-a-quarter and could stay even further.

She’s has done particularly well since she last ran and has got very strong in herself. We have her entered in a fillies’ maiden at Gowran Park next week and she’ll probably start back there. Her work is very good at home and hopefully she won’t to wait too long to win a maiden.

Made an exciting winning debut in a maiden at Leopardstown in August.
We were delighted with her win at Leopardstown. She didn’t surprise us that she was good enough to win, but she did surprise us with how professional she was. She’d never been away from home or worked on grass before that run, so for her to put up a performance like that says a lot for how much natural ability she has. She probably deserves even more credit for what she did there, as she actually fractured her pastern in the race. She was lame walking out of the winners’ enclosure and had surgery at Troytown Veterinary Hospital the following day. Thankfully she recovered really well from that and her preparation for this season has gone really well so far. We’ve had a lovely clear run with her and her work has been very good. The plan is to let her take her chance in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. In an ideal world, I’d love to have got a prep race into her, but everyone is in the same boat on that front. She may stay further in time, but I think a stiff mile at the Curragh will suit her very well. She’s a beautiful mover and is always likely to prefer a sounder surface.

Rated 104, he won a maiden at the Curragh in August prior to finishing second to Mogul in the KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend.
The plan is to run him in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He wintered very well. He is looking strong and his work has been very good. He’ll have a bit to find on official ratings, but a stiff mile at the Curragh will suit him and I think it will be a good starting point for him. He should be able to get a mile-and-a-quarter in due course, but we’ll wait and judge him based on what he does on the track.

From the family of Zarkava, he made an encouraging debut in a seven-furlong maiden at the Curragh in October.
He’s a horse we’ve always liked a lot. He was quite green in his only run at the backend of last season, but he’s strengthened really well over the winter and I’m very happy with him. He might well start off in a mile-and-a-quarter maiden at the Curragh next weekend.

We’re going to start him back in the Committed Stakes at Naas on Monday. We gelded him since he last ran as he was a bit cheeky and we thought the procedure would be of benefit to him. He has been showing plenty of pace in his work, so we’ve decided to start off in sprints with him.
