Donnacha O'Brien Stable Tour
03 Jun 2020

At the age of just 21 Donnacha O’Brien has already accumulated a substantial CV in racing. His time as a jockey was always going to be restricted due to the weight issues associated with his tall frame, but in a career that lasted just over five years he put together a list of achievements that would be the envy of most.

Crowned Champion Apprentice in 2016 and Champion Jockey in 2018 and 2019, he rode over 400 winners that included 10 individual Group 1 successes. Four of those top-level victories came in Classics, with him winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saxon Warrior and Magna Grecia, the Oaks at Epsom on Forever Together and the Irish Derby on Latrobe. He announced his retirement from race riding in November 2019.

Training was always likely to be the next step for Donnacha and during his last year as a jockey he took charge of a string of horses in Longfield where David Wachman used to train. While he sent out winners from Longfield under Aidan O’Brien’s name in 2019, his first winner after he received his trainer’s licence came when Flower Garland won a maiden at Dundalk on February 21st 2020.

After a false start due to the Covid-19 crisis, Donnacha is ready to face into his first full season as a trainer. He sat down with Kevin Blake from attheraces.com to discuss his Flat team for the campaign ahead.

4 b c Galileo – Anja
An unraced four-year-old that is a half-brother to the smart sprinter Aboulie.
He is one with an unusual profile, as unfortunately for him he was born on December 28th 2016, so he is considered a four-year-old even though he is really a three-year-old. He’s quite a nice horse and I’d say he’ll want at least a mile-and-a-quarter. We’ll run him in a four-year-old and up maiden in about a month. If he can work his way up to stakes class, we’d consider sending him down to Australia where he’ll be on a more level playing field with his age group.

A half-brother to the high-class juvenile September, he shaped with promise in a maiden at Leopardstown on debut prior to proving disappointing on his only other start in a maiden at the Curragh in August.
He showed good promise in his first run at Leopardstown, but was a little bit disappointing in his second start at the Curragh. I don’t think there was any real excuse for him that day other than it was a stronger maiden and he wasn’t quite up to it at that stage. He wintered well and I’ve been pleased with his work of late. A mile to a mile-and-a-quarter and good ground or better will suit him. I’d be hopeful he can win a maiden.

Rated 90, he won a maiden at the Galway Festival prior to finishing third in a premier handicap at the Listowel Harvest Festival.
He won a maiden at the Galway Festival, but there were only four runners and none of them have won a race since, so I was a bit surprised to see him given a mark of 90. He might prove himself to be a 90 horse or even better in the fullness of time, but I didn’t think he ran to anything like 90 that day at Galway. He ran a solid race off that mark in a nursery at Listowel in his only other start last season. He looks like one that will stay well and get as far as a mile-and-three-quarters. Hopefully longer trips will bring about some improvement in him, as otherwise he’ll be a tricky horse to win with. He handles soft ground, but I don’t think good ground will be a problem for him either.

Rated 102, she is unbeaten in her two starts in a maiden at Naas and the Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
I wouldn’t say we were surprised by her win in the Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh last year. Her work had been very good and we thought she had the potential to be a very nice filly, but we just felt that she wouldn’t have the experience to go close in a stakes race on just her second start. We were thrilled with what she did there. She did really well to come from as far back as she did off a steady pace over a trip that will probably turn out to have been well short of her best distance. She is obviously one of our big hopes for this season and we were training her to be ready for the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the end of May, but she’s obviously going to have to wait a little bit longer for that race now. We’ll be guided by what she does there as to where to go next, but I’d imagine her best trip will prove to be beyond a mile. A mile-and-a-quarter shouldn’t be a problem and she might well stay a mile-and-a-half. She’s quite versatile in terms of ground. Like a lot of progeny of Deep Impact, she has quite a high knee action, but looks to handle better ground very well.

An unraced full-sister to the high-class middle-distance performer Cliffs Of Moher, she is entered in the Irish Oaks.
She’s a lovely, big filly that is a full-sister to Cliffs Of Moher. She was a little bit weak last year, but she filled into herself well over the winter. We’ll start her off in a fillies’ maiden over a mile-and-a-quarter or a mile-and-a-half in the coming weeks and I think she’ll appreciate a sound surface.

A half-sister to the smart juvenile Great Page, she finished down the field on her only start in a maiden at Leopardstown in October.
She’s a filly that had one run at the end of last year. She just ran green and I think she’s a fair bit better than she showed that day. I’d be very hopeful that she’ll be up to winning a maiden this year. A mile to a mile-and-a-quarter should suit her.

Rated 90, he made it third-time lucky when winning a maiden at Roscommon in August.
He’s been working very well and the plan is to run him in the Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown on June 9th. I wouldn’t mind a bit of juice in the ground for him, but I don’t think it’s essential. I’m looking forward to him and think he’ll be capable of showing good improvement this year.

An unraced colt from the family of Henrythenavigator and Listen, he realised 250,000gns as a yearling.
He’s a big colt that was working well last season, but a couple of little setbacks kept him off the track. He has plenty of pace and I’d say seven furlongs or a mile will be his trip. He could potentially run in the mile maiden at Naas on June 8th.

She’s a lovely filly with a fine, big action. She’s pretty much ready to go and will debut as soon as the seven-furlong maidens start. She’s been working nicely and we’re looking forward to her. She is the first Uncle Mo I have dealt with and I’ve been impressed with her.

She’s a lovely filly and her work has been very good. She’s quick enough for six furlongs, but she should stay seven furlongs and possibly a mile. We’ll start her off in a six-furlong maiden in the coming weeks and if she can win one of those we’ll look for a trial for the Moyglare Stud Stakes.

He’s a small, strong horse that been showing plenty in his work so far. He qualifies for median auction maidens and there’s one over six furlongs at Fairyhouse on June 15th that I’d like to run him in if he gets in. While he’s quick enough to start off at six furlongs, there is plenty of stamina on the dam side of his pedigree and he should stay a mile in the fullness of time.
