Joseph O'Brien Stable Tour
02 Jun 2020

With a particularly strong team of older horses and some exciting three-year-olds, 2020 looks set to be another big season for Joseph O’Brien. He sat down with Kevin Blake from attheraces.com to discuss his Flat team for the upcoming season.

His two-year-old team was covered in our Class of 2020 series and can be viewed here.

Rated 112, he won the Saval Beg Stakes at Leopardstown and the Curragh Cup at the Curragh for Jim Bolger last season prior to changing hands.
We’ve been very happy with him since he came back from Saudi Arabia. The plan is to start him back in the Saval Beg at Leopardstown on June 14th. He’s an obvious one for all those top staying races throughout the season.

Rated 119, he won the Melbourne Cup in 2017, but disappointed in his only subsequent start in March 2019.
It’s great to have him back and he has settled back into his routine well. He is a little bit behind the others and probably won’t be ready to run until July. He looks well and is sound, so we’ll bring him along gently and won’t over-face him in his first couple of races back.

Rated 108, he won the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield for Aidan O’Brien in 2018.
He has been off the track for a while, but he has settled in well here and his work has been good. We’ll start him back in the Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh on June 13th and see where he slots in from there. If we can get him back to his old form, that’ll do us as he was a very good horse on his day.

Rated 112, he won four races last year including Listed races at Roscommon and Down Royal and a Group 3 handicap at Flemington.
We gelded him and gave him a good long break after his run in Saudi Arabia. We are bringing him back along steadily at the moment and will be focusing on the autumn with him. Running down in Australia will be high up on his priority list. He improved a lot last season and hopefully he can find some more progress this year.

He wintered really well and I’m very happy with him. We are looking at the Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh on June 13th as his likely starting point. The main objective will be to try and win another Group 1 with him this year.

Rated 118, he won the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan prior to finishing in the frame in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
We are looking at the Savel Beg at Leopardstown on June 14th as his starting point, with the Martin Moloney Stakes at Limerick on June 17th as a possible alternative. We would have loved to have had another crack at the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot with him considering he ran so well in it last year, but going there without a prep run would have been very difficult. We will take a steadier approach to him than that and in the longer term it would be great to get him back to the Melbourne Cup.

He has been in good form since he arrived back from his run in Saudi Arabia. We are likely to start him off in the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh on June 13th. He’s a very solid horse in Group 2 and Group 3 company, so he’ll hopefully have another good campaign this season.

He has plenty of options in the first week back racing. He will most likely start back in the Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh on June 13th, but we’ll also give him an entry in the Heritage Stakes at Navan on June 10th. He’ll probably be seen to best effect over a mile-and-a-quarter and a mile-and-a-half. I’m excited about him this season and hope he’ll improve as he gets more experience. He’s a lovely horse.

We’re very happy with him at home, but the ground might be a little bit quick for him at the minute. He will always appreciate an ease in the ground and when he gets it, he’ll be worth following in premier handicaps later this season. He’s a lovely horse.

He has been a little bit hard to train, but he’s in good shape right now and I’m happy with him. We are going to drop him back to sprinting and the intention is to start him back in the Woodlands Stakes over five-and-a-half furlongs at Naas on June 8th. It wouldn’t be a surprise if it takes him a couple of runs to get the hang of sprinting, but we are hopeful that it will suit him.

Rated 104, he made a winning seasonal reappearance in the Devoy Stakes at Naas in March.
We were delighted with the way he won at Naas. We weren’t expecting that sort of performance from him on the day. We are looking at the Heritage Stakes at Navan on June 10th for him and he also has the Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh on June 13th as an option. A mile-and-a-quarter seems to suit him well and he’s a horse that we might run abroad in the second half of the season.

We are intending to start him off in the Ragusa Handicap at the Curragh on June 12th. He’s a fast horse and he is working well. He disappointed us a little bit in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last year, but in fairness to him he wasn’t beaten all that far. He’s a lovely horse and hasn’t done anything wrong yet. He has a couple of options, but at this stage the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on June 13th looks his most likely starting point. Rated 106, he won a maiden at Navan and the Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown last season.
He’s in great shape, but is still a few weeks off being ready to run. We haven’t pinpointed a starting point for him yet, but we’re very excited to see what he can do this season. A mile-and-a-quarter will suit him and there’s a fair chance he’ll stay a mile-and-a-half. I think he’ll be fine on better ground.

Rated 92, he has won two of his three starts, most recently winning a novice contest at Southwell by eight lengths.
He had a little setback after he won at Southwell. He’s back in full work and he’ll be ready to run in early-July. We’ll be looking at premier handicaps and possibly Listed races for him once he’s ready to go. He enjoyed the Fibresand at Southwell and gives every impression that he will handle dirt, so he could be one to go on his travels at some stage if he comes up to the mark in class terms. He’s a lovely horse.

Rated 103, she made it second-time lucky when getting off the mark in the Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh in September.
She has wintered very well and we’re very excited about her this season. I see her as more of an Oaks type than a Guineas type, but we might start her off in the Irish 1,000 Guineas with a view to then running her in the Irish Oaks. Better ground is an unknown for her, but she’s not a big heavy filly and I think she’ll handle better conditions just fine.

Rated 109, he won a Listed race at Redcar and finished third in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket for Richard Fahey last season prior to changing hands for 625,000gns in October.
He has settled into the routine here and his recent work has been good. He will start off in a Listed race over five-and-a-half furlongs at Naas on June 8th. I expect him to need his first run, but he is an exciting horse for later in the season. We’ll start him off at sprint trips, but we’ll feel our way with him with regard to his trip and will make adjustments based on racecourse evidence if we need to.

Rated 85, he made it second-time lucky when winning a maiden at Dundalk in October.
He’s a nice colt that has done well over the winter. We’ll start him off in handicap company, but we’d be hopeful that he can progress up the ranks. He should stay a mile-and-a-quarter.
