Aidan O'Brien Stable Tour
01 Jun 2020

Aidan O’Brien, as always, has an array of stars under his care for the new season headlined by a strong team of older horses including Japan, Magical and Kew Gardens. Just as exciting are his team of three-year-olds, with Mogul, Love and Arizona being just three of his potential Classic winners.

Aidan talked to Kevin Blake to discuss the Ballydoyle prospects for the 2020 season and here are his thoughts.

Rated 119, he won the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp and the St Leger at Doncaster in 2018 and won the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot last October.
He’s going to go straight to the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Of course, we’d rather have got a prep race into him before it, but we had him ready to run at the Dubai World Cup meeting, so we had him well forward good and early this season. We always thought that staying trips might bring the best out of him and we were delighted with what he did at Ascot on his first try over two miles last October. While the Gold Cup will be another step up in trip for him, I’d be hopeful he’ll get it. He’s a very classy stayer.

Rated 115, she got off the mark in Group 1 company when winning the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington in November.
A mile-and-a-quarter to a mile-and-a-half, fast ground and a flat track are what she wants. We’ll have her in all the big races and she’ll slot in as suited depending on where the colts are going. She loves to travel. She doesn’t know herself lately as she hasn’t had anywhere to go! She’s very uncomplicated in every way and is a pleasure to train.

Rated 122, she won five races last year including the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and Champion Stakes at Ascot.
The Prince of Wales’s at Royal Ascot might come a little bit quick for her, so she is probably more likely to start off in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh on June 28th. She seems very comfortable at a mile-and-a-quarter. We won’t rush her and will aim to have her in top order for the autumn. It’s a real pleasure to have a mare as good as her back in training for another year.

Rated 118, he won the Derby at Epsom last year prior to finishing in the frame in the Irish Derby, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The plan at the moment is to start him back in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket and see how we go from there. I think we’ll stick to a mile-and-a-quarter or a mile-and-a-half with him and I think good ground is important to him. Running him on soft ground in the King George last season seemed to upset him, so we’ll try to avoid that with him this year if we can.

Rated 117, he won the Ballysax Stakes and the Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown prior to finishing a close fourth in the Derby at Epsom. He disappointed in his most recent start in the Irish Derby.
We have him in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket and he might well start off there. He likes good ground and a mile-and-a-half suits him well. He might even stay a bit further than that. He didn’t get a full campaign last season and the Irish Derby didn’t pan out well for him, so we are looking forward to seeing what he can do this season as we always thought he would make up into a better four-year-old.

Rated 118, he won the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp last year.
He is a great form and the plan is to go straight to the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot with him. He enjoys a strong tempo and a mile seems to suit him best, so we might well keep him to that trip.

Rated 114, she won the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster as a juvenile and finishing in the frame in in the first four in Group 1 races on five occasions last season, looking unlucky on more than a couple of occasions.
She’s in good form and is ready to start off. The Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh or going straight to Royal Ascot would be the main options for her. A mile-and-a-quarter and a mile-and-a-half suits her best. She was a little bit unlucky not to win a Group 1 last year, but she ran some very good races and can hopefully do better again this season.

Rated 122, he won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp and the Juddmonte International at York last year.
We’re really happy with him and he might start off in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. He seems comfortable at both a mile-and-a-quarter and a mile-and-a-half. Good ground seems to suit him best. He improved throughout last season with racing and we’d be hopeful that he could improve even more this season. He’s an exciting horse to look forward to.

We have been very happy with him since Naas. He’s in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket and could well run there. I think we’ll keep him at a mile-and-a-quarter and a mile-and-a-half. Donnacha thought he didn’t get the trip in the St Leger. His work has been very good at home this year

Rated 118, he sprung a 33/1 surprise when winning the Irish Derby at the Curragh and hasn’t run since.
He’s in good form, but we are going along gently with him at the minute as we think he’s more of an autumn horse. He has done well physically, he handles an ease in the ground and is very genuine. A mile-and-a-half will suit him well.

Rated 116, he won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot prior to finishing in the frame behind Pinatubo in the National Stakes at the Curragh and the Dewhurst at Newmarket. He finished a never-nearer fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in his final start as a juvenile.
We will probably start him off the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. We always thought he’d make up into a better three-year-old and good ground will suit him. We are very happy with him at the minute. He’s not short of pace and wouldn’t be sure to stay beyond a mile, but that’s not to say we won’t try him over further later in the season.

We are thinking we’ll start him off in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. We think he’ll stay further and by running there, he’ll have the option of going on to the Derby or the Prix du Jockey Club. The better the ground, the better it will suit him.

He had a little bit of a setback and while he’s back cantering, it will delay his comeback a little bit. We would like to run him in the Irish Derby or the Derby at Epsom and if he’s going to get to either of those he’ll most likely have to run without a prep race. We’ve always thought he’ll get a mile-and-a-quarter, but we’d like to give him a chance over a mile-and-a-half.

We’ll debating at the minute whether to go for a Guineas trial or the Committed Stakes over five-and-a-half furlongs at Naas on June 8th. We initially thought he’d stay a mile, but we’re not so sure now. He’s a horse that likes a strong tempo in his races and he is probably more likely to get that over shorter trips than a mile. He’s a big colt and has done well from two to three.

The plan could change, but at the moment it looks like she’ll run in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Rated 110, he won a maiden at the Curragh and the KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown prior to finishing fourth in the Vertem Futurity at Newcastle.
He is likely to start off in either the Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown or the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot, but we are leaning towards Leopardstown at the minute. He’s a big, powerful horse and he’ll probably need his first run. Physically, he’s made more like a miler, but we always thought he’d stay a mile-and-a-quarter and hoped he’ll stay a mile-and-a-half. Looking back at his run in the Vertem Futurity, a mile at Newcastle was probably just a bit sharp for him. That said, it was important to run him there to get more experience into him and travel him for the first time. All that will stand to him this year and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do.

We are keeping our options open with her for the minute between the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Wherever she starts off, she is one that will probably step up in trip later in the season. We were delighted with her at Thurles and particularly at Newmarket. Donnacha said she wasn’t handling the deep ground at all at Newmarket, but she still tried hard all the way to the line and nearly got there. That’s a sign of a good filly and we are looking forward to seeing how high she can climb this season.

Rated 110, he won a maiden at Gowran Park in September and went on to win the Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket later that month.
We are debating whether to send him to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket or the Irish 2,000 Guineas. In terms of trip, we’re not sure how much further than a mile he’ll stay, but we’re happy with him at home

Rated 111, he won a maiden at Navan in June and the July Stakes at Newmarket prior to finishing third in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh.
He had a little setback after the Phoenix Stakes last season and we decided not to rush him back for a run at the backend of the season. We aren’t 100% decided whether we’ll start him off yet. The 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes are all options. He hasn’t raced beyond six furlongs and we couldn’t be sure that he’ll stay a mile.

Rated 101, he got off the mark when winning the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and hasn’t run since.
He had a setback after his win at Royal Ascot last season and was didn’t look to rush him back from that. He is likely to start back in the Committed Stakes over five-and-a-half furlongs at Naas on June 8th. From there, we’ll be looking at either the Commonwealth Cup or the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot for him. He has plenty of speed and wouldn’t be sure to get beyond five furlongs. Even though his sire Gleneagles is by Galileo, he had a lot of fast-twitch muscles, he was a quick thinker and quick in everything he did, so it isn’t a surprise that he has sired a sprinter like this lad.

Rated 93, he built on a promising debut when winning a seven-furlong maiden at Dundalk in October.
He’s working well, but he’s just not quite there yet. We think the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket might come a little bit too soon for him, but hopefully he’ll be ready to run in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh. He might stay a little bit further than a mile, but I wouldn’t think we’ll be rushing him up in trip.

Rated 114, he won a maiden at the Curragh and the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket prior to finishing third in the Dewhurst Stakes.
He’s in good order and the plan is to go for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with him. He’s a powerful, straightforward colt with a good attitude. He handles all types of ground and could possibly get further than a mile later in the season.
