Hugo Palmer Stable Tour
29 May 2020

HUGO PALMER has his team poised and ready to come out the starting blocks as the long-awaited resumption of racing looks to have finally arrived and there could be plenty of ammunition to fire from the Newmarket trainer in the months to come.

The master of Kremlin Cottage Stables had to settle for 53 winners last year but he will be doubly determined to get the bar raised again and his few runners prior to the lockdown suggest normal business had resumed.

Hugo had to take it on the chin with the hugely likeable Powerful Breeze who showed she was out of the top drawer when landing the Group 2 May Hill Stakes and then failed by only a head behind Quadrilateral in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile but he is eyeing major autumn targets for her.

There are several in his team with untapped potential and a sprinkling of unraced three-year-olds who could well be household names come the end of the season.

Hugo kindly spoke to Tony Elves of atthearces.com about those he hopes can prove to be money spinners in the weeks and months to come.

His two-year-old team was covered in our Class of 2020 series and can be viewed here.

Winner of 11 of his 34 starts and currently rated 104. Came closest to victory last year when second, beaten two and a half lengths, to War Glory in a handicap at Lingfield (7f) in October off 105. Previous winner of the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood (6f) in August 2018 when short heading Justanotherbottle off a mark of 111.
I think we are aiming to start him back in the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot. He is rated 104 at the moment and he won the Stewards' Cup off 111 when carrying topweight which is not something achieved by many horses. He has been a star and it would be lovely if he could add a Royal Ascot race to all his other successes.

Winner of five of his 12 starts and currently rated 101. Made a winning reappearance in a listed event at Cagnes-Sur-Mer (1m 4 1/2f) in February when scoring by half a length from Hipodamo De Mileto.
We love Collide and he is another horse who had a wind operation last Summer and who has done well since. His comeback run was pretty good at Kempton and then he did very well to win a listed race in France. I have always wanted to step him up in trip and it would be nice to think he could be an Ebor horse. He does need a bit of cut in the ground and I don’t know if he would stay two miles, but the Northumberland Plate could be the sort of race for him as well.

Winner of six of his 18 starts and currently rated 101 AW and 90 turf. Has won both of his starts this year – notching a three quarter length win from Sky Defender at Lingfield (1m 2f) in January off a mark of 89 and following up with a length and a half win from Smile A Mile over the same course and distance in February off a mark of 96.
There is nothing in the programme book for him on the AW but he is 11lb better off on the turf so we will explore that anyway. He is in really good nick and there are options for him at Haydock and Doncaster early in the season. We might just see if he can have a go on the turf.

Winner of three of his 14 starts and currently rated 91. Gained his last success when beating Silent Attack a length in a handicap at Lingfield (1m) in February off a mark of 87.
He had a wind operation last year and it took him a little bit of time to find his feet again but he did well on the AW. He just ran a bit flat on his last start and he hasn’t run on the turf since he had his wind operation so hopefully we can get him to perform as well on the turf as he did on the AW. He likes cover and being held up so maybe the consolation race for the Royal Hunt Cup might be a nice place for him to aim if he gets in.

Winner of two of his 7 starts and currently rated 85. Won his last two races in his first season racing – beating Pianomissi three quarters of a length in a novice event at Ascot (1m 4f) in October and following up with a three and three quarter length victory from Contrebasse in a handicap at Doncaster (1m 6 1/2f) in October off a mark of 80.
He is a horse I have a lot of hope for this year. He is training really nicely, and I think he could be a really progressive stayer. I am sure he will get two miles and maybe even further. There is the consolation race for the Northumberland Plate which could be ideal for him and he should get in off his current rating.

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently rated 86. Gained his last success when beating Durrell three quarters of a length off a mark of 81 at Newmarket (1m 2f) in July.
We couldn’t work out why Ironclad didn’t win his last start at Kempton. We discovered the following day that he had a hairline fracture which has been repaired. We will start at ten furlongs with him but has always suggested he might get a mile and a half, and we could quite possibly try that again. He has been gelded and he has wintered well.

He has always promised more than he has delivered, and he has been gelded over the winter which may be the making of him. We kept him really to lead Powerful Breeze and he will do a good job of that when she is back in work.

Winner of one of his 4 starts and currently rated 82. Finished third, beaten four and a half lengths, to Sameem in a handicap at Redcar (1m 2f) in April of last year when racing off his current mark.
He is a similar story to Ironclad in that we couldn’t quite work out why he didn’t win on his only start last year and he hung that day. He came home with a fracture and that has been repaired and is doing well and I should think he will be a progressive stayer.

Winner of two of his 3 starts and currently rated 89. Made a winning debut in a novice event at Kempton (1m) in September when beating Byzantine Empire a length and a quarter and gained his second success in a similar event at Newbury (1m) on his final start in October.
He has done very well from two to three and I am very pleased with how he has progressed and grown. He doesn’t want the ground too quick so that would have to call into question the new ten-furlong handicap at Royal Ascot which would be perfect otherwise. We will just have to see where he gets too.

Winner of two of her 3 starts and currently rated 113. Landed the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster (1m) in September by a length from Boomer and ended her first season with highly creditable effort when runner-up, beaten only a head, to Quadrilateral in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket (1m) in October.
She has been walking for a week now – we have a long way to go but she did precious little wrong last year, and I know that James Doyle felt she could and should have won the Fillies' Mile and who am I to disagree with him. We weren’t beaten very far and she was back in front one stride after the line. It is frustrating that she had an injury, but she has grown and developed and done very well. The Sun Chariot on October 3rd would be the logical Group 1 for her and it would be nice to think she could run before and I suppose she could go for the Matron Stakes or the Prix Moulin or she could run against colts at Haydock.

3 ch g Zoffany - Emerald Ring
Winner of two of his 5 starts and currently rated 86. Gained his last success when beating Know No Limits in a nursery at Chester (7f) in September off a mark of 81.
He is a progressive horse and he has been trailing well. He will go for six and seven furlong handicaps and I don’t know that he will get a mile. I am pleased with him.

He is a well-bred horse and his brother was second in the Derby. He will make his debut at Newcastle on Monday and he has been working nicely. I think he will make up into a nice horse.

Better of two effort when runner-up, beaten nine lengths, to the highly touted Waldkonig in a novice event at Wolverhampton (1m 1/2f) in December.
He is a nice horse and he met one on his second start. He has done very well physically over the winter and he is going to start back over a mile and a quarter on Monday and I have been pleased with him.

She has been doing nicely and is not far away from the track – I am pleased with her.

Acquitted
Has done little wrong in his short career and could find a decent ten furlong handicap this term when there is plenty of cut in the ground.
3102517
Caravan Of Hope
Improved throughout his first season and can continue to wheel along successfully.
3027591
Collide
Has done well since a wind operation and plenty more to come from him.
3147444
Eastern Sheriff
Winner of his only start and this brother to St Leger winner Harbour Law could well develop along a similar path.
2871956
Gifted Master
Has been a great stalwart for the stable and could well strike again this term from a feasible handicap mark.
3125100
Powerful Breeze
Has already shown she is a high-class filly and, back from injury, she can make up for lost time in the second half of the season.
