Karl Burke Stable Tour
27 May 2020

KARL BURKE, like the rest of his counterparts in the training ranks, is champing at the bit for the resumption of racing in Britain and expects to have a healthy contingency at Newcastle at the start of June.

The Spigot Lodge trainer had already notched 12 winners from 57 runners prior to the lockdown and that included a  black type success with Hareem Queen in the Listed Hever Sprint Stakes at Lingfield in February.

Burke has shown his one of the emerging high-risers in the training ranks with an average of over 70 winners per season and passing the £1 million mark in prize money over the past four seasons and he, once again, enjoyed Group 1 success with the imperious Laurens in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville in 2019.

Laurens has taken her deserved place at the paddocks now but Burke could well unearth another jewel somewhere down the line to fill her place.

Karl kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hopes can soon click into action when we resume.

Note: This feature covers Karl's horses aged three and over. His two-year-old team was covered in our Class of 2020 series and can be viewed here..

Winner of six of his 29 starts and currently rated 103. Not seen out since finishing ninth, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Dolphin Vista in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket (1m 1f) in September 2017 off a mark of 105.
He is an interesting one - he has been off for a couple of years but he is working as well as he ever has at the moment. He is going to be hard to place off a rating of 103 but he will probably run in a handicap at Newcastle next week and he could end up at Ascot if he comes through that and the ground was decent.

Winner of eight of his 24 starts and currently rated 106. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Funny Kid in a conditions event at Deauville (1m 4 1/2f) in February.
He is one of the yards favourites and he has been with us a long time. He is not going to be an easy horse to place but, hopefully, we can win a nice big handicap. We were keen to go to Australia with him at the end of last year and whether that will happen this year we will see.

Winner of three of his 10 starts and currently rated 94. Best effort last season when runner-up, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Cold Stare at Haydock (6f) last June off his current mark.
He is a horse who had a really good two-year-old and three-year-old career and then towards the end of last year didn’t run any race and had a few niggles. He seems to have come back to himself and, again, he is a Mayson who wants a lot of cut in the ground but he has plenty of ability.

Winner of four of his 22 starts and currently rated 95. Made a winning reappearance in a handicap at Southwell (7f) on New Year’s Day when beating Power Link three quarters of a length off a mark of 93.
He is a good solid handicapper. He won a listed race as a two-year-old but he is not up to that grade now and he likes cut in the ground. He won at Southwell in January and if we find some cut in the ground through the Summer he will run otherwise he will be saved for a Winter campaign.

Winner of three of his 8 starts and currently rated 88. Successful when last seen out at Southwell (5f) in February when beating Samovar a length and a quarter off a mark of 85.
He did really well through the Winter and he loves Southwell. He is a horse that will want a bit of cut in the ground so where and when he will get that we don’t know and five furlongs is his trip. He should stay six furlongs but he has a lot of speed and the visor helped him find a bit more speed. Five furlongs and soft ground will be perfect for him.

Unplaced to Sam Cooke, beaten nine and a quarter lengths, in his only start at York (1m) in October 2018.
He is a horse who has been plagued by injuries and hence has only had one run. He is a horse with ability and we are persevering with him. If we can get him on the track I am sure there is a race or two in him. I would say he will certainly get a mile and maybe a mile and a quarter.

Winner of four of her 8 starts and currently rated 96. Has won two of her three starts this year and scored by a neck from Royal Birth in a listed event at Lingfield (5f) in February on latest.
She was a listed winner at Lingfield in February and she would have run well if the Good Friday meeting could have gone ahead, She has done really well since and come into herself. She is already a listed winner but hopefully we can get some black type Group form. Being a Dark Angel she will probably want some cut in the ground on grass.

Hopefully, he will run on the second day up at Newcastle next week. He is a solid handicapper and if runs well at Newcastle we might have an entry in the Hunt Cup at Ascot and he might get in the Silver race there.

Winner of one of his 13 starts and currently rated 95. Unplaced, beaten six lengths, to Dakota Gold when last seen out in a listed event at Ascot (5f) in October.
He is a lovely horse who has been gelded through the Winter and it has definitely helped him. He is another Mayson who wouldn’t want it too firm but will definitely handle good ground. He has loads of ability and hopefully he can win a big race for his owner this year. He is suited by five or six furlongs and was placed in a Group 1 and Group 2 in France as a two-year-old. He is a high class horse but we had to geld him to get that bit more out of him.

Winner of two of his 5 starts and currently rated 98. Made a winning debut in a novice event at Haydock (7f) in June when beating Enough Already a length and followed up with a three and a quarter length success from Dubai Future in a similar event at that course (1m) in July.
He is a solid horse and he is improving. He will run in the Pavilion at Newmarket at the Guineas meeting. He is owned by Sean Woods who is setting back up as a trainer so he will be heading down to him later in the season. I am hoping we can win a race or two before he goes but he is a lovely horse.

She is a filly who did well to win on her second run at Catterick last year. She was still very weak and stays well. She will stay a mile and a quarter and there will be a handicap in her somewhere. I’m not sure she will make up into a black type filly but she should certainly win races.

Winner of one of his three starts and currently rated 97. Made a winning debut at Carlisle (5f) in June when scoring by two and a quarter lengths from Ventura Flame.
He is an interesting one – the new five furlong race at Ascot will be right up his street. He won very nicely first time out at Carlisle and I then ran him in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket which was taking a chance but he ran really well to finish sixth to Royal Lytham and was only beaten three and three quarter lengths. I made a mistake and ran him back quick in the Prix Robert Papin at Deauville and I shouldn’t have sent him there. After that he had a couple of niggles but he has been gelded and given a lot of time. He still retains a lot of ability.

He’s a lovely scopey horse who ran well first time out at Newcastle and then he got stuck in the soft ground at Newmarket second time. He was still a big weak horse and he didn’t quite handle that. He was a very lazy work horse and he ran a blinder first time out to finish second and then won at Ayr. He has progressed since then and finished fourth in the Horris Hill. He has done well physically but is still very lazy and a hard horse to gauge at home. Hopefully, he saves his best for the Racecourse and he will be hard to place but he obviously has some ability.

She is a Cheveley Park filly who won on her last run in October. She has progressed really nicely and mile/mile and a quarter handicaps will be her forte. I am very pleased with her and she should win races.

Finished sixth, beaten three and a half lengths, to Amber Island on her only start at Leicester (7f) in September.
She ran a blinder first time up under Jamie Spencer and she is a filly who in a normal year we could place to win her maiden in the North. It is hard to know what race she has to compete in but she has the ability to win races.

He won a nursery on his final start at Nottingham and he wants a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half on soft ground to be at his best. He had done very well physically throught the Winter.

He is another handicapped type of horse for seven furlongs or maybe a mile. He is a big strong horse and he is one we should place to run well.

She is a tough little filly by Showcasing who wants a bit of cut in the ground. She is only small but she is very strong and very quick and should be able to win fillies Sprint handicaps in the North.

She’s a very interesting filly who will run in the six furlong novice at Newcastle on the first day. She has done really well after winning on her debut at Wolverhampton and we think a fair bit of her – she’s a nice filly.

Winner of three of his 6 starts and currently rated 109. Made a winning reappearance in a conditions event at Newcastle (6f) when scoring by a length and three quarters from Amarillo Star.
He is the highest rated horse in the yard at the moment and he could turn up at the Guineas. We have a decision to make in the next week or so as to whether we go Guineas or wait for the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. We could possibly do both but he’ll have a couple of pieces of work and then we will make our minds up. The Guineas is obviously a tough one and he’s got to prove that he stays but there is lot of stamina on the dam’s side. A couple of Dandy Man’s have stayed a mile and I think he will stay but it is a question of whether he is good enough for Guineas.

He is a nice horse who won a couple of races last year and did really well. I thought he would stay a mile to start but I’m not really sure as there is a lot of speed in hi family and I would think he will be kept to six or seven furlong races for now.

She is a lovely filly who won nicely first time up and then was made favourite for the Weatherbys Super Sprint. That all came too quick for her really and then she had a few issues after that. We have given her time and I am very happy with her and she will probably go to Haydock on June 7 or 8.

He is a good solid horse who came to us from Martyn Meade after the Phoenix separation. He gallops well at home and doesn’t show as much on the track. He has had two ok runs and I am sure he will winning races before too long.

He is a King Power horse who was very unlucky in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot last year. I am not saying he would definitely have won but got completed wiped out at the furlong marker when he was coming with a run. He is a horse we really like but he is a Mayson and would like cut in the ground. I think he is going to end up a very solid Heritage Handicap horse for his owners.

She is a very nice filly and she could yet end up going for the Guineas. I am very happy with her and she has loads of ability. Whether she is good enough for a Guineas we will see and it is a huge step up. I think the Owners are keen to go there. If she doesn’t go there for any reason then she will probably go for the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
