David Loughnane Stable Tour
21 Feb 2020

By Simon Mapletoft

David Loughnane, who grew up in Galway, was destined to work with horses from the day he bought an unbroken pony with his pocket money - without asking his parents’ permission.

He taught himself to ride - without a saddle - and quickly graduated onto racehorses despite turning up to ride work at local trainer David Ryan’s yard as a schoolboy without boots or a helmet.

A speculative flight to Australia later led to invaluable apprenticeships with trainers Anthony Cummings and Paul Messara before Loughnane gained further experience back home with Tom Dascombe, John Quinn and his namesake Mark Loughnane.

His ambition to train was fulfilled when he spent a short spell at Roger Fell’s base in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, in 2016, but when historic Helshaw Grange in Shropshire became available Loughnane seized the opportunity with grateful hands.

With wife and experienced horsewoman Sara by his side, he saddled 38 winners from a team of around 40 horses last year and is on course to better that total in 2020 after masterminding a flurry of winners on the All-Weather.

“I knew from a young age that I wanted to train,” he recalls. “I definitely had the bottle to ride but knew in my heart that I was a better horseman than a jockey. I’ve always been fascinated by getting inside a horse’s head and figuring him out. Improving a horse gives me the best feeling in the world.”

Loughnane, who has 55 inmates, has no desire to get much bigger in terms of numbers. “I have 63 boxes and wouldn’t want any more,” he insists. “I can train the horses I have with a hands-on approach and attention to detail and I’d never want to lose that.

“What I do want to do is improve the quality in the yard and I’d like to be in a position where I don’t have anything rated lower than 70. I firmly believe that if you can win a couple of races with that calibre of horse you can more or less cover your owners’ fees.”

Quality is not in short supply at Loughnane’s impressive facility. Kaser and Ghaith are on target for big prizes at Wolverhampton in March while Ginger Fox, Baby Steps and Fizzy Feet could all up at Lingfield Park on Good Friday Finals Day.

A big horse, he likes a good galloping test which is why Kempton suited him so well when he won there in January. He ran OK there last time when he finished second but it was a bit messy and the winner got first run. He needs to get into a good rhythm but will win again. There’s a handicap at the Galway Festival that could be an ideal race for him so we’ll take our time and probably train him with that in mind.

This seven-year-old has only been with me for two starts but has run well in both. He was a good second at Wolverhampton under my amateur jockey Bradley Roberts, sticking on well even though he was left in front too soon, and was fourth at Kempton over 2m in a race that turned into a sprint. He’s basically a big galloper who needs to find his rhythm without getting his stride broken. I’d like to try him up at Newcastle as that big open track should play to his strengths.

He was in top form around Wolverhampton before Christmas but then put in a couple of poor efforts which told me he was ready for a holiday. He’d be the first to let you know if he wasn’t up for it but he’ll come back better for being freshened up and remains well handicapped off 67. He has lots of ability, as he showed when Ben Curtis won on him at Catterick in 2018. He all but pulled up leaving the gates but went on to win going away!

He’s improved 19lb since we got him from Hugo Palmer and I’m really looking forward to running him in the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton in March before possibly having a crack at the Mile Final on Good Friday if he’s rated high enough. He blotted his copybook last time but you can draw a line through that as he jinked leaving the stalls and Tom Greatrex lost his irons. When he first came to me he didn’t like passing horses but I noticed some clouding in one eye and put it down to partial sight. We put some pacifiers on him and he never looked back. He’s so much more confident now.

I bought him by chance at Doncaster and paid a bit more for him than I intended, but I don’t regret that now. Dave Lowe, who has been one of my most loyal owners, bought a majority share in him and he hasn’t stopped progressing. Wolverhampton really suits him, but the important thing to this horse is that he has a flat track. He’s won over 9.5f there but Ben Curtis, who rode him over that trip on 10th February, was adamant he’ll be at his best back over 8.5f now he’s taking on better horses. My plan is to run him in the valuable Lincoln Trial Handicap in March and I expect him to run a big race.

He’s a bit of a lad but has loads of ability. I thought that gelding him might do the trick but he’s still got his quirks. He’s been placed numerous times since winning over 6f at Wolverhampton last summer but is more than capable of winning again off his current mark. I’m tempted to run him in the apprentice race at Lingfield Park on Finals Day if he’s rated high enough as I think 7f round there will really suit him.

Owned by one of my biggest supporters Kulbir Sohi, this horse has some real quality. He won a Fast Track Qualifier and a valuable race in Qatar for George Scott but lost his way. He wasn’t enjoying his racing but has put a few good runs together since we got him late last year. Paul Mulrennan rode him at Newcastle and Chelmsford and was very positive about his prospects. I’d like to I think he will win an All-Weather sprint but in the longer term he could be a big handicap horse. He’s at his best when he’s dropped out and can go through his gears and might just be an Ayr Gold Cup or Silver Cup type come the autumn.

She could also be aimed at the apprentice race at Lingfield Park on Good Friday. She has shown good form over 5f and 6f but shouldn’t have any problem racing over further. She lost a shoe at Chelmsford in early February and the plan is to freshen her up now. There’s a lot more to come from her and I think she will be capable of earning some black type eventually. In the meantime I’d like to exploit her much lower turf marks, which she can run off on the beach at Laytown in the spring.

Another horse who joined me from Ian Williams, he is very versatile in that he has enough speed for 6f but stays 1m and has more to offer from his mark in the 80s as he demonstrated when winning for Hollie Doyle over 7f at Lingfield last time. He’s won twice for me at Kempton, too, but the key to him is to produce him late. If you pick it up too early he will tend to pull up a bit. Like Baby Steps and Fizzy Feet, he’s a horse who could be aimed at the 7f apprentice handicap at Lingfield Park on Finals Day.

A spell over hurdles is likely for this lad, who hasn’t been with me long but had some nice form with Ian Williams, including a good run at the Shergar Cup. He definitely has more ability than he shows so a spell over the jumps might just help him to re-focus. His first run for me over 2m at Wolverhampton was encouraging. He got left in front too long but wasn’t beaten far by David Simcock’s prolific winner Clap Your Hands.

I love this filly and I’m pleased to say she’s on her way back after getting cast in her box last year and chipping a bone in her hock. She ran a great race at Chester on only her second start in July, finishing third in a novice to Tom Dascombe’s Dr Simpson, who went on to win a Group 3 at Dundalk. After that she was placed over sprint trips at Wolverhampton and Chelmsford City. The lay-off may have been a blessing in disguise as she has really strengthened and blossomed and is back cantering now. I’d be disappointed if she couldn’t progress off a mark of just 63.

She bolted up at Chester as a two-year-old and has done very well physically for her winter break. She’s got the pace for 6f but I think that 7f will be her best trip this year. Turning tracks, as she proved on the Roodee, suit her well so she should enjoy Wolverhampton and Lingfield. I’m not unhappy with this daughter of Poet’s Voice’s opening mark of 79 and look forward to seeing her progress when she returns to the All-Weather in a few weeks’ time.
