Tony Carroll Stable Tour
16 Jan 2020

By Simon Mapletoft

Three decades ago, journeyman jump jockey Tony Carroll was making the most of the short-lived discipline of hurdles racing on the All-Weather, notching up a string of victories on a chestnut gelding called Cosmic Dancer for emerging trainer Sean Woods.

Today, almost 26 years since getting the seven-year-old home for the fourth time in a 2m6f handicap hurdle on the Southwell Fibresand, Stan Mellor’s former stable jockey is plotting Flat success on the All-Weather circuits - but this time from behind his trademark binoculars.

Now a well-established dual-purpose trainer with his own extensive facilities in picturesque Cropthorne in deepest Worcestershire, Carroll is determined to build on last year’s career-best total of 81 and is enjoying a highly productive All-Weather season.

At the half-way point, he had saddled 18 winners for a third place position in the trainers’ table behind champion Mick Appleby and John Gosden. In fact, only Appleby could match him for winners in the first two weeks of the new decade.

Carroll also remains focussed on winning a major National Hunt prize this year with his Triumph Hurdle fourth Nelson River, who is being aimed at the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury in February and may take his chance in the Champion Hurdle.

Almost a third of those All-Weather winners came from a rather surprising source. They were partnered by the stable’s 7lb claimer Elisha Whittington, who returned a level stakes profit of more than 53 points for the stable in an eye-catching spell.

Four of her wins came on the prolific Silverturnstogold, who is in the running to become the winning-most horse of the season after racking up a four-timer on the Fibresand surface that Carroll knows so well.

And in Silent Attack he has a live contender for the £150,000 Mile Final at Lingfield Park on Good Friday. The Godolphin cast-off’s victory under top jockey Ben Curtis at the Surrey track in the second week of the new year elevated his rating to 102.

“I’m very lucky to have my own purpose-built yard which is always full, and a great team of staff and owners behind me,” says Carroll. “I enjoy every minute of it and after such a successful 2019 I’d love to have a go at reaching 100 winners for the first time this year.”

Here, Carroll nominates 12 horses to follow for the second half of the All-Weather season.

I was really disappointed that he didn’t win at Lingfield early in the New Year because he’s in such good form, despite being a nine-year-old now. Looking back, it wasn’t ideal that he found himself making the running but he’s very well handicapped and when everything falls in to place for him he could do a Silverturnstogold and rattle up a sequence. For an older horse he still moves so well and has a great stride.

Tony Byrne’s gelding had a light but very good turf season and looked smart when he won off a fast pace over 9f at Newmarket in September. I brought him back over 7f at Chelmsford in the New Year but they took the legs off him over that shorter trip. He’s on a good mark (77) but needs to go back up in distance. That extended 9f around Wolverhampton will be ideal for him, especially if they go a good gallop.

I only paid £10,000 for this gelding at the Ascot Sales last summer but he’s developing into a very exciting horse. He’d already won at Lingfield for Saeed Bin Suroor so I wasn’t surprised to see him build on a couple of promising efforts around Chelmsford when he won over 1m there on 11th January. The handicapper put him up 3lb to 102 after that so the Mile Final on Good Friday is looking a realistic target. In the meantime I may run him in the Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton in March. We could consider the Lincoln at Doncaster but that’s a very tough race so staying on the All-Weather might be our best option.

A very classy horse, he ran a great race when finishing fourth to Pentland Hills in last season’s Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. He wasn’t disgraced in the Fighting Fifth in November but I’ve run him twice over hurdles on heavy ground which really doesn’t help him. The plan is to go for the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury in February, decent ground permitting, and if everything goes well there he may take his chance in the Champion Hurdle. In the meantime I’ll keep him ticking over on the All-Weather. He’s a winner on the Flat at Wolverhampton so we may as well try and exploit a nice mark of 70 and keep him sharp for his big targets over hurdles.

Blinkers, Fibresand and Elisha Whittington have transformed this horse. Elisha works for me and gets on really well with him. His prominent style of racing is ideal for that track, too, and it’s been wonderful for his owner Tony Byrne to see him rattle up a four-timer. He’s gone up 10lb in the weights since that winning run began but there is more to come from this gelding, who has emulated what we achieved with Mister Music at Southwell two years ago. There are plenty of races for him on the Fibresand so we’ll stick with what he enjoys for now.

This son of Kodiac started life with Charlie Appleby and Godolphin and is still a maiden who is back after a short break. He ran better than the placings suggest when he finished fourth over 7f at Kempton in December. It just didn’t go to plan: he was drawn wide and had plenty of use made of him. I think he’s a stronger horse now though and can hopefully get back to the promise he showed as a two-year-old off a falling mark.

This daughter of Delegator is a lovely filly who is improving with age and with racing. There’s a very good race in her and although she has some progress to make off her current mark I’m not ruling out having a go at the Fillies’ and Mares’ Final on Good Friday. The race she ran in at Lingfield last time over 6f wasn’t run to suit her but she pleased me in a Fast Track Qualifier at Wolverhampton over 7f before that when she clung onto the coat tails of two very nice fillies in the winner Invitational and Rock On Baileys, despite being wrong at the weights. I’m confident she can build on that.

A four-year-old filly by Showcasing, she sustained a stress fracture to her pelvis last year and had been off the track since May when she re-appeared in a 5f handicap at Newcastle in early January. Despite her lay-off, she really pleased me in finishing fourth, beaten only two lengths, and will come forward for that. She has scope to improve off her mark of 64 but the added bonus is that she hasn’t won yet so she can run in maidens as well as handicaps.

I always believed this horse would improve for a step up in trip and he proved me right when he won a 1m6f handicap at Chelmsford City in early January. They didn’t go fast enough for him over a shorter distance at Kempton previously but he appreciated the stamina test last time and won well despite showing signs of greenness. He’s a big horse with great presence and will make a smashing dual-purpose performer one day.

This horse is getting a reputation he doesn’t deserve. He’s a long-standing maiden but he is happy on most tracks and is capable of winning in his grade if things work out for him. It got a little over-complicated at Wolverhampton when he couldn’t get a clear run and ended up in no man’s land, but still got within half a length of the winner. He’s been second at Southwell and Chelmsford, too, and is good enough to take advantage of his falling mark soon.

This is a very talented horse who will be better on the grass in due course, but he’s run well in both starts for me on the All-Weather since coming over from Ireland including in a Fast Track Qualifier at Wolverhampton. The draw beat him at Lingfield last time but I plan to run him in another qualifier at Kempton because the track will suit him much better. He’s not as easy ride because he’s very lazy but he’s tough and needs to have his mind made up. Like they say, if you don’t ask you don’t get but this fellow has plenty to offer.

I bought this gelding cheaply out of Richard Hannon’s – just £4,500 at Ascot in November - and couldn’t have been happier with his first run for me at Kempton in a 7f handicap in early January. He found himself in front too soon that day and just got run out of it but we have scope to improve off a mark of 71. He has the speed for 6f so options are open but he’s a horse we are still learning about and I’m looking forward to finding out how far we can go.
