Isabelle Pacault Stable Tour
06 Jan 2020

Isabelle Pacault shot to international fame when the Davy Russell-partnered Carriacou lifted the 2019 Zeturf Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, France’s most valuable and most prestigious jump race, which is also known as the French Gold Cup.

Yet while Pacault might have gained notoriety by becoming the first woman to add her name to this historic race, she has in fact spent many years already as one of France’s top ten jump trainers. And that despite the fact that she rarely has more than thirty horses in her yard in Maisons-Laffitte.

“I decided a long time ago that I would only ever train around thirty horses,” says Pacault, who came into the racing industry through her father who used to breed show jumpers before turning his eye to racing. “I have very few owners and I prefer to concentrate on our homebreds. I also want to spend time with my family, my kids and grandkids.”

The homebreds in question are mainly AQPS (other than thoroughbreds) horses, while her family includes her daughter Anne-Sophie, a successful former amateur rider turned fellow trainer.

Isabelle is very passionate about her horses and, she admits with a wink, about Davy Russell. Following their success in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in May last year, Pacault is keen to secure his services again for the 2020 renewal of the race.

Before that though Isabelle Pacault will be travelling back and forth to Pau, a meeting she appreciates for its focus on jumping, and here she gives Liz Price of attheraces.com the lowdown on her runners in the upcoming meetings at the Pyrénées-Atlantiques track.

A listed winner over fences a few years ago, he enjoyed a good meeting at Pau in 2019 where he is a regular visitor. The break last summer has done him a world of good and he won another chase at Pau between Christmas and the New Year.
He’s had enough of Auteuil. He doesn’t like the soft ground there. His goal is the Grand Steeple-Chase de Pau, as long as the ground is ok. If it rains on the day and the ground goes soft that would be ok, as long as it doesn’t become a bog. He is a different horse in the provinces and that is where he shall run. I think he has a good chance in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Pau.

Won a hurdle race on her second start in October 2019. Has potential.
She is good. I will take my time with her, because I would like her to run at Auteuil. I have entered her in a hurdle race and in a chase next week and I will go the easy route with her. I will run her in the race where there are not too many runners, as I want her to learn. She can be a bit impatient at times, but she needs to learn. But hurdles or fences, it won’t matter.

Extremely consistent, he came into his own in the summer and lifted the 2019 edition of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris from Bipolaire, who then went on to get the better of him in the Grade 1 Prix la Haye Jousselin, where the heavy ground went against Carriacou.
Carriacou is a very intelligent horse who has become more and more confident. Physically, he is not the strongest horse, but mentally he is. And obviously the way he was ridden by Davy played a big part in his success. I adore Davy who rode him again in the Prix la Haye Jousselin where the ground was much heavier. And he recognised that the ground was not ideal and rode him accordingly. That was very important because I believe that horses remember things. In fact, memory plays a great part in the life of Carriacou. He remembers good things and he will remember bad things. Carriacou is back in training, but unlike last year, he won’t run in Pau this winter. I spoke with Davy about maybe bringing him over to England, but in the end, we decided against it. So Carriacou will run at Auteuil in the spring and obviously the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris will be his main goal in 2020.

Consistent over hurdles, she won her first race over fences last October.
I’m a bit baffled with her. I am going to change her tack to see if that helps, as she always makes one mistake in her races. Last time she should have won, but she made a huge mistake. As I said, she always makes just one mistake. She will run on the 9th in the Prix Joseph Biraben, a chase. She will run with a different bridle and we will see if that makes a difference.

A regular visitor at Pau, he has only won one race so far, but now that he has switched to Cross Country racing that might change.
He disappointed me in terms of his ability to actually win a race. So, I decided a change would be good and he is now going to run in Cross Country chases. I think he likes it and he will run again on the 7th of January in the Prix Fairplay at Pau. He will have to run against older horses, but I love jump racing, so I will run him in that race.

A fast mare who has won several times on the flat.
I have the impression that Every Where is fed up with racing. I think she might run one more time so that I can be absolutely sure, but if that doesn’t turn out all right, she will go and join the stud.

Won a nice handicap at Auteuil last September. Very consistent over fences.
I tried to run him over hurdles at Pau to keep him in shape for Auteuil and in fact, he lost his rhythm. At Auteuil, he runs in a different rhythm that suits him, so I will run him in the next Tiercé race over fences at Pau, which I think is on the 14th of January and then he will return to Auteuil. I don’t see why I should take him out of the environment that he is comfortable in and visibly he likes the rhythm at Auteuil.

A winner over fences at Pau in January 2019, he was switched to Cross Country chasing on his last start at Pau.
It’s more a case of just Feeling than Fast. He seems to lack a bit of class on the flat, so I have put him in the Cross country races.

Lightly raced, he is still looking for his first victory.
He is a good. I think he will run on the 10th of January in the Prix de Fezensac, a chase over 2m3 ½ f. It’s a race for AQPS horses. He will run there and then will go to Auteuil. He comes from a family that are late developers. He has matured physically though. I took my time with him and I hope that he will be running in Group company at some point. He still has some way to go but I’m hopeful.

A homebred AQPS, he ran three times on the flat as a three-year-old and was placed twice. He made an encouraging start over the hurdles when he finished a good third in race for unraced AQPS horses.
He is a homebred who I would like to work on. If I had wanted him to win on his first start, I would have asked the jockey to take the lead and let his class speak to himself. But I think, if you want him to have a proper career in the future, it was better that he learns how to conserve his energy. I like the Pau racecourse a lot, as the jumps are quite close to each other, which favours horses that can jump well. It is a good stepping stone for Auteuil. He probably will run once more at Pau, probably over fences and then he will go to Auteuil. There, he’ll probably will start off over hurdles, but then will be switched to fences.

Has shown great potential from the start and scored her biggest victory when she won the Grade 2 Prix des Drags last year. A very prestigious chase, she beat the likes of Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris fancy Docteur de Ballon plus Baie des Iles.
I turned her out into the fields, and she won’t be running at Pau. Originally, I wanted her to retire and go to stud, as she used to be quite brutal in her jumping. Also, I had sold her two sisters, so she is the only one left to breed from. And I like breeding from mares who are a bit mad. I find they produce good horses. But she has improved and now she scares me less. So, she will run again at Auteuil in the spring.

He has made his debut over hurdles at Auteuil in October when he finished fifth in a race for unraced three-year-olds. He hasn’t run since.
He is good. His debut was very good at Auteuil, but after the race he grew again and so I left him alone. I think he might run once at Pau this winter, but we shall see. And if he runs, he will do so with the aim of learning the trade.
