Doug Watson Stable Tour
06 Jan 2020

Doug Watson has been a dominant force at Meydan this season, at the time of writing he has had 15 winners from 79 runners at HQ and they include an opening night double at the Carnival.

Needless to say, he will be a man to follow over the coming weeks and he kindly spared Stephen Molyneux of attheraces.com some time to talk through his leading fancies.

9-y-o now so great to see him win the other day and hopefully he has got some confidence from dropping into handicaps. Will stick to handicaps for his next start as they are easier to dominate but hopefully he can get back to a level where we have to start looking at Stakes races again.

Great to see him win on the opening night and he will have all those 2000m handicaps on his agenda. Took a while to get over being gelded which is the main reason why he is doing so well this season.

Placed in the last two Godolphin Miles but we have toyed with the 2000m trip so this year maybe the year to try that. We weren’t tempted to run him before the New Year and he will start off in the Maktoum Challenge and we can take it from there. Obviously one of the classiest horses in the yard.

Spent a couple of weeks walking during December so we always knew he may need his return in the Dubawi Stakes (last week) and that was the case, but we were delighted in the circumstances with his run. He got behind as he does but ran on strongly and we would expect him to go close to reversing form with Gladiator King next time. It goes without saying he is one of the best local sprinters and all roads will point to the Golden Shaheen again where he didn’t get a fair crack at it last March.

With no turf options before the Carnival for sprinters we had to try him on the dirt in the Garhoud. He had gone well on it in training but obviously race day was different altogether and we were a bit disappointed in the circumstances. It will be back on the grass and having got to within three lengths of Blue Point last season he will have all those sorts of races on the agenda again.

Has few miles on the clock and having missed two years we have been delighted with how he has come back. He needed his return then won as we expected next time in a race that looks very strong form (runner-up won on the 4th January). He will run in a mile handicap off what will be a very low weight and he should win races.

It was always a bit of a battle with him last season with hoof issues so although he didn’t win he did very well to finish in the frame in all four of his starts, including in the Godolphin Mile. Delighted with his return in the Creek Mile and he should be a leading player in the Maktoum Challenge (Round 1 this Thursday).

Has had a tough time travelling back and forth from America so he will be quite late. Showed ability here last season, particularly when second in a Carnival handicap so hopefully he can be another nice sprinter for the yard.

One we are really excited about. Came from Simon Callaghan in America and has really impressed us. His form ties in closely with Coal Front (Godolphin Mile winner) but we will probably start him over 6f and then step him up to 1m.

It’s tricky to get them on the grass here in Dubai before the Carnival, the training track is only open from January and there aren’t many opportunities to run at Abu Dhabi. We did gallop him at Meydan the other day and we will get him out again very soon. Needed his return where 1m around a tight track wouldn’t have suited. Everything was a bit of a rush last season so let’s hope he can have a good clear go at it during the Carnival.

Not long with us but a classy addition to the yard and we will look at starting him off in the second round of the Maktoum Challenge. Lost his way a bit in America but his second to Seeking The Soul who was well fancied for the Dubai World Cup last year suggests we should be thinking of that race ourselves.

We are going to start him off in the Carnival over 1m, I think he will stay and so does Pat (Dobbs). Has been very impressive in his two wins so far this season (over 7f) and the speed they go over 1200m on the dirt has persuaded us to stretch him, he could just get out of his comfort zone if we ask him to do too much too quickly. We like him a lot.

Arrived with Quip and will be pointed at the Classic races. They aren’t long out of quarantine but they are settling in well and he in particular looks great. The classic generation don’t look strong here in Dubai so unless Godolphin have something special you would have to think he can be competitive.

She was beaten in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial but we had given her eight weeks off since winning on her debut and that may just have found her out, so we were happy. The winner (Final Song) is clearly smart and I think we can give it more of a go in the UAE 1000 Guineas itself. She has speed and that will hold her in good stead.
