Nicky Richards Stable Tour
17 Dec 2019

NICKY RICHARDS enjoyed an early Christmas present last weekend with a four-timer at his local Carlisle track on Sunday which topped up a valuable success for My Old Gold when she gained a gutsy success from Cloth Cap in the Bet365 Handicap Chase at Doncaster the previous day.

The roll of honour was led by Big Bad Bear and supplemented by Chapel Stile, Teddy Tee and Kitty Hall and it could well have been a five-timer if the short-priced Skiddaw Tara had read the script and followed suit.

The Festive season has been kind to the Greystoke trainer as stable stalwart Simply Ned has grabbed Grade 1 success twice at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting in the past two years and bids for a hat trick on   December 27.

With 21 winners to date, Richards is half way to his total of 42 in the 2018-19 season and has the exciting Ribble Valley looking to give him further cheer at Ascot this Friday.

All is clearly well in his Penrith base camp and Nicky kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about those he hopes can bring him further success this term.

Winner of four of his 13 starts and currently rated 131 over hurdles. Finished fifth, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Newtown Boy in a handicap hurdle at Haydock (2m 3f) on his reappearance this month off a mark of 133.
He ran the other day at Haydock and there was no pace in the race. He wants two and a half miles and very soft ground. He ran alright and he will win another hurdle or two but I think we will be chasing with him before too long. He probably goes to Ayr on January 2 if all goes well.

Winner of three of his 7 starts and currently rated 130 over hurdles. Gained his second success over hurdles when scoring comfortably by a length and three quarters from Multellie at Carlisle (2m 1f) on Sunday.
He’s a nice sort and he was consistent in bumpers last year and he’s showing similar consistency over hurdles. He was third at Aintree then won nicely at Wetherby and had an easy task when following up at Carlisle on Sunday. He is progressive horse and could be a nice horse for the Spring.

Winner of 11 of his 31 starts and currently rated 147 over fences. Was scoring for the fourth time over fences this season when beating Court Royale nine lengths at Newton Abbot (2m 1/2f) in September and subsequently fourth, beaten 11 lengths, to Al Dancer at Cheltenham (2m) in October.
He has had a break and he is just back in training now and being prepared for a Spring campaign. He had a good Summer when winning four and he finished last of four to Al Dancer at Cheltenham in October but I didn’t think he ran a bad race. Strangely for him he made a couple of bad mistakes which is not like him. The ground was too soft that day and if he gets on good ground in the Spring he might win a nice race.

He is horse that Malcolm Jefferson had in the past and a typical Malcolm horse and lovely big chasing type of horse. Hopefully, that’s what he will be doing next season and hopefully before that he will be winning for us over hurdles.

He finished second in a Veteran’s Chase at Kelso recently and ran a nice race. He won the Grimthorpe at Doncaster last season and he is a fairly high class handicap chaser and he will be contesting those sorts of races again this season.

He is a good old handicapper and is probably unlucky not to have won a decent race last year. He will run in the Castleford at Wetherby and hopefully he won’t be too far away. He is in grand fettle and will run a good one.

She is a good consistent mare and after a good comeback run behind Lostintranslation at Carlisle she battled like a demon to beat Cloth Cap at Doncaster on Saturday. Hopefully, she will continue to progress and have another good season.

He is a grand big horse and another one for bumpers. I would hope he would run nicely when we run him in a bumper.

Promise in his only bumper but soundly beaten in maiden hurdles at Hexham (2m 4f) in November and Musselburgh (1m 7 1/2f) last week.
He ran nicely in his bumper at Carlisle last year then I ran him in a hurdle at Hexham over two and a half miles and he was just far too keen early. I ran him the other day over two miles at Musselburgh just to try and get the wind out of his sails a little bit. He was running on alright and he just needs to learn that he is a jumping horse. I would hope he would end up a nice horse.

Winner of three of his 8 starts and currently rated 120 over hurdles. Scored by five lengths from Loch Linnhe when last seen out in a handicap hurdle at Market Rasen (2m 7f) in March 2018 off a mark of 110.
He is a grand big horse who missed last season but his schooling is going well and everything is fine. I might run him over Christmas or early January in a novice handicap chase.

Winner of five of his 9 starts and currently rated 132 over fences. Scored by three quarters of a length from Cool Mix on his only start last season in a Novice Chase at Newcastle (2m 1/2f) in December 2018.
He is a good horse but a bit fragile. He might only have a couple of runs this season as he has only just started cantering again now. He wants very soft ground but he is a high class horse. If I could just get him through to the end of the season I would say that  next year I will have a proper year with him.

Winner of four of his 5 starts and currently rated 142 over hurdles. Impressive winner of both of his novice hurdles and scored by 11 lengths from Sir Valentine at Wetherby (2m) on his latest outing at the end of November.
He is a nice horse and never did anything wrong in his bumpers and has done nothing wrong in his two hurdles up to now. He is a very exciting horse and he goes to Ascot on Friday for the Sky Bet Supreme Trial. He beat two good horse at Wetherby in Sir Valentine and Proschema and we will let him do the talking.

Winner of a bumper at Ayr in November by half a length from Charm Offensive and subsequently well beaten in a listed bumper at Huntingdon this month.
She won her bumper up at Ayr well and then I ran her in the listed race the other day at Huntingdon and she ran too bad to be true. Hopefully, we can put a line through that and she will bounce back in the Spring. We will see how she is and we might go straight hurdling with her but she is a likeable filly.

Winner of 10 of his 42 starts and currently rated 159 over fences. Finished third, beaten six and a quarter lengths, to Defi Du Seuil in the Grade 2 Shloer Chase at Cheltenham (2m) on his latest start in November. Has won the Grade 1 Paddy’s Reward Club “Sugar Puddy” Chase at Leopardstown (2m 1f) in December for the past two years and scored by half a length from Footpad in the last renewal.
It’s all been said about him and everyone knows about Simply Ned. He is already booked on the Ferry for Ireland and the old bugger would swim there for us if we didn’t put him on the Ferry! In the Shloer Chase he has as good two mile form as you would want. Defi Du Seuil went onto win the Tingle Creek and they went no pace at Cheltenham which didn’t suit him. The younger horses just sprinted away for a 100 yards from him and he got left in fourth place and then battled back into third. I thought it was a lovely run and he has always needed pace. If they are not going flat out passed the stands the first time you can forget about it and hopefully they are going flat out in Ireland and he will run a good one.

Winner of one of his 5 starts over hurdles and currently rated 121. Off the mark in a maiden hurdle at Perth (2m 4f) in May when beating Lake Baikal 14 lengths.
He is not a bad sort of horse and he was a bit unlucky last season and then end up winning a race at Perth in May. He just pulled a muscle in his back and it took time to settle and he is back in work now and will run over the Christmas period somewhere.

No wins from 4 starts. Pulled up when heavily odds-on in a maiden hurdle at Hexham (2m 4f) won by Calle Malva.
He ran at Hexham last week and he couldn’t get his feet out of the ground and it was an embarrassment. He will never run on that ground again. By the end of Spring he has hopefully won a couple of hurdles and we have a nice little horse for going chasing.

Winner of eight of his 27 starts and currently rated 147. Returned to winning form in the Listed Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle (2m 7 1/2f) in November when beating Captain Chaos three quarters of a length off a mark of 143.
He is a good old horse and very game. Stamina is the name of his game and he won the Rehearsal Chase at Newmarket about a fortnight ago and stamina won him the day. He is great staying horse and I don’t know what we are going to do with him but we might have a couple of runs over hurdles and go for the Grand National or he might have one run after the weights come out and then the National. He is in grand order, is a very consistent and honest horse.

Winner of five of his 9 starts and rated 135 over fences. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Vinndication in a novice chase at Carlisle (2m 4f) in November of last year on his only start last season.
He has been a very promising horse all of his life and sadly he met with a little injury after finishing second in a novice chase won by Vinndication at Carlisle last season. He was beaten by a very good horse that day and he is back cantering now and he is another who won’t get a lot of racing this season but if we get him to the end of the season in one piece and get him back for a full campaign the sky could be the limit.

Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to the gambled-on Blazing Port in a bumper at Sedgefield this month.
He’s a grand little horse and one of those horse who shows you nothing at home. We took him to Sedgefield on a bit of a fact finding mission last week and he ran a smashing race and only inexperience beat him. Hopefully, he keeps on improving and then he could be a grand horse. He is so laid back he couldn’t tell you the time of day – one of those mystery type of horses.

He is fairly consistent even though he didn’t run too good over fences at Newcastle last time. We might go back over hurdles and freshen him up a bit before we go back over fences.
