Donald McCain Stable Tour
10 Dec 2019

DONALD McCAIN’s may have no immediately recognised superstar this time around but the signs are very encouraging at Bankhouse Stable in Cholmondley, Cheshire with 45 winners and nearly £400,000 in prize money amassed so far in the 2019-20 Jumps season.

The ever reliable Chti Balko made another contribution to McCain’s tally when winning at Bangor recently and heavy ground could well see him make further gains but the possible star of the future could well be Minella Trump who made it two out over two over hurdles when scoring impressively at Sedgefield on Friday.

The stable has recently acquired the likeable Blakeney Point who could well be buoyed up after a change of scenery and the prospect of jumping hurdles and there have already been some waves made by Goobinator and Navajo Pass in the Juvenile Hurdling division.

With a busy period in front of him, Donald kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about his main prospects for the season.

Winner of seven of his 31 starts on the Flat and currently rated 94. Finished fourth, beaten seven lengths, to Shailene in a handicap at Newbury (1m 4f) in September off a mark of 96 when trained by Roger Charlton.
He was a very useful Flat horse for Roger Charlton and we bought him in October. He will be running very soon and he has taken to his job well. We will kick on and get him started

She takes a lot of getting fit as she is so big and we started her off over hurdles at Kelso on Sunday. She should improve for the experience and she will win her races.

Winner of four of his 19 starts and currently rated 141 over hurdles. Returned to winning form on his latest start in a handicap hurdle at Bangor (2m 3 1/2f) in November when beating Burrows Park ten lengths off a mark of 132.
He is a good little horse and he won well at Bangor in heavy ground. He loves heavy ground and won a nice prize and deserved to win as he always does his best. He is in at Wetherby on Saturday and is a good solid handicapper.

Scored by four lengths from Call Me Freddie in a bumper at Carlisle in November.
He won well at Carlisle and the ground was slow enough for him. He is about ready to run again now and we are just looking to go. We will give him another run in a bumper with a view that if he did run well that we might have a good day out in the Spring somewhere.

He fractured his hock at Cheltenham last year when he looked like he was going to win the novice chase down there. He came back and ran a nice race at Wetherby on ground that was too soft. He showed all his enthusiasm and I am sure there is another day in him.

Promise in two bumpers in France and a winner over a mile and a half on the flat there in April.
He won a flat race in France and I am not clued up on the French form but he has been schooling away and is nearly ready to run. He is a nice straightforward horse with a good honest way of going. We will start him over two miles on soft ground and will work away from there.

He ran nicely in his first run over fences at Hexham on ground he hated. He had an abscess in his foot when due to run at Musselburgh recently but he’s back on track and will go novice handicap chasing in the North.

Winner of two of his four starts. Made a winning start to his hurdling career at Wetherby (2m) in November when scoring by 13 lengths from Artistic Language.
He is a nice horse and he did it well at Wetherby. He still doesn’t know what he is doing and jumps well. He ran around a little in front at Wetherby but has no experience. I am not sure where we go next and he might be entered in a couple of better juveniles before Christmas. He goes on easy ground so there is no need to wait until the ground dries out.

Obviously the saddle slipped and he was disqualified at Ayr but he was running a nice race and possibly would have been second. He is a staying chaser and he jumps well. It was a good effort but he was well beaten at Wetherby on Saturday.

He is a smashing little horse and he had a really heavy fall at Wetherby and I thought I would get a run back into him over hurdles the other day and blow me if he didn’t go and do it again. I thought he would be a bit careful but he was too brave and he came down to the second last at Kempton with a chance and let fly at it. He won a couple of races in May and went a bit quiet and lost the plot at Stratford on his return and was a bit keen. We put a hood on him at Hereford last time and he ran a really solid race under a double penalty. He is a fun little horse who is going to win more races.

Rated 87 on the Flat and won both of his races over middle distance on the Flat in 2017 when trained by Charlie Appleby.
He has only started back in work after getting a little injury in his box. He has a great pedigree and likes soft ground and I was looking forward to getting him started but it’s only a hiccup.

Winner of one of his 15 starts and currently rated 117 over hurdles. Having only his second start for the stable when third, beaten 34 lengths, to Jelski in a novice hurdle at Bangor (2m 3 1/2f) in November.
He has been a bit disappointing to be honest. He was a chaser in France and we are going to give him a run back over fences and see if that brings improvement.

Placed in all 4 runs over hurdles and currently rated 112. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Do Not Disturb in a maiden hurdle at Kelso (2m) in October.
He is a grand big horse who has looked like winning a couple of times and has managed to get beat. I think he is waiting to go over fences and he has schooled well and will be doing that shortly. He has more speed than you think for a big horse and I don’t think we need to be going much beyond two miles to start with even though he will get further.

Winner of three of his 11 starts and currently rated 139 over fences. Off last season and gained his last success when scoring by ten lengths from Princeton Royale in a handicap chase at Huntingdon (2m 4f) in January 2018 when trained by Nick Henderson.
He had an injury last year but is back and cantering away. He is a great big horse and takes a lot of work and we are going the right way.

Winning point-to-pointer. Finished third, beaten 42 lengths, to Induno in a maiden hurdle at Sedgefield (2m 1f) in November.
He was disappointing the other day but he shouldn’t have been at Sedgefield on heavy ground but there was nowhere else to go. We will find some better ground and I am sure there will be some big improvement.

Winner of one of his 2 starts over hurdles. Off the mark at Catterick (1m 7 1/2f) last month when scoring by two and a quarter lengths to Quoteline Direct.
We took him to Carlisle first time out and the old stiff track just found him out and he didn’t get home. We went to Catterick the other day and he won nicely and he’s a good straightforward horse that is going to jump fences. He wouldn’t want more than two miles at the moment and he is a horse who is going to win more races.

No wins from 6 starts in France and rated 119 over fences and hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten four lengths, to Red Risk in a chase at Auteuil (2m 1 1/2f) in September.
He is another Simon Munir and Isaac Souede horse and he finished second in his last chase in France. He will be running in handicap hurdles or handicap chases and we just have to decide which. He is about ten days to a fortnight off running.

Runner-up in his second point-to-point in Ireland in April.
He is ready to run and has been waiting for an owner. He has one now and he will be running anytime soon. He is a nice straightforward horse who is fit and ready to go.

Winner of one of his 2 races over hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten five lengths, to Marie’s Rock at Haydock (1m 7 1/2f) last week.
I was thrilled with him at Haydock last week as he had been off a long time and he is not easy to train. He showed a lot more speed than I thought and it was a race I could start him in without running in a handicap after one run over hurdles. He has taken the race fine and hopefully we can kick on with him now.

Winner of four of his 8 starts and currently rated 113 over hurdles and 129 over fences. Finished fifth,  beaten 13 ½ lengths, to Schiehallion Munro in a chase at Catterick (2m 3f) in November.
He has been a little disappointing and just had his wind done the other day. He was a useful novice hurdler and he looked like winning at Catterick the other day and didn’t and stopped quite quickly. He has had his wind tightened up and hopefully that makes a difference.

Unplaced on his hurdling debut at Carlisle (2m 1f) in October in the race won by Multellie.
He went up to Musselburgh the other day when they called it off late and I am hoping that  he’s similar to Pull Green and he ran on the wrong track on the wrong day when he was well beaten at Carlisle. Hopefully, he will be much better on a sharp track and wants nicer ground.

Fell when in third in a bumper at Bangor at the end of November.
He fell halfway up the run-in in his bumper the other day at Bangor when in third place. He was running a nice race and was still galloping. He must have just put his foot in a hole and lost his feet. He seems ok now and he will go hurdling.
